SETE EXHIBITORS TO MAKE MOST OF THE PLATFORM SPORTS TOURISM EXHIBITORS are gearing up for the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange.
O
ASYS’s Bryan Kennedy believes sports tourism is a multi-billion rand industry. “Each of the sport bodies or associations should be able to report on events hosted and a collective value by all would be a more accurate measurement. The public, private sectors and South Africans in general are well aware that sport unites people. It serves as a change agent and we have all witnessed how people bond one-on-one or in groups when ‘Team South Africa’ is victorious. No value can be attached to this as it mobilises positive engagement by all communities. The enthusiastic welcome at OR Tambo Airport which our athletes received after their return from London – immaterial if they won gold, silver, bronze or no medal – stands testimony to this.” Bryan believes the interschool tournament industry is also growing in leaps and bounds. “Companies like Steinhoff and FNB are actively supporting inter-
school rugby festivals. Of course, there are other sponsors in different types of sport categories, but the main beneficiaries are the learners who also have an opportunity to get into the public eye through televised events. Companies with an organised
CSI strategy are well informed that sport creates a healthy community and create components that would attract and develop the leaders of tomorrow. Sport development amongst the youth should however take a priority with the Department
of Sport and we should compare our own programmes with those that are created by the public sector in other countries. While there are some initiatives in place, there is always room for improvement. The gymnasts from Russia and Romania are
children but they are products of those countries, with large investments from the respective public sectors.” Edward Mitchell, from Rovos Rail, will be using the platform to promote the company’s Golf Safari and African Golf Collage, both nine-day fully inclusive classic journeys around South Africa. This panoramic nine-day sojourn commences in Pretoria and winds its way to journey’s end in Cape Town and includes a golfing and non-golfing itinerary. The first leg traverses the majestic Drakensberg escarpment en route to the lowveld of Mpumalanga. Springbok Atlas will be celebrating its brand new look at SETE. With sixty-six years of transporting millions of people in its fleet of luxury and semi-luxury vehicles, Springbok Atlas Charter is one of the largest, longest-lived complete transport management companies in South Africa and Namibia. In celebration of its exceptional heritage, the company’s trusted brand Springbok Atlas Luxury Charter has been given a fresh brand-makeover that reflects their stature and relevance in the transport industry today.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER Durban
SPORTS TOURISM MICHAEL Mabuyakhulu, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, shares his thoughts on Sports & Event Tourism Exchange.
D
2
EAR colleagues, I am extremely proud of the fact that the province of KwaZulu-
Natal has secured the right to host the Sport and Events Tourism Exchange for 2012 – 2014, Africa’s most important sport event trade show. The provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal is acutely aware of the important impact which events and conference delegate spend can have on the economy of our province. However, we also realise that the impact of such events ex-
tends way beyond this simple fact. One of the core benefits of hosting such events is the actuality that it builds the knowledge and capacity of our local population in important realms such ‘the hosting and bidding for major sporting events’ which is the important focal point of the congress component of SETE 2012. We are hoping that this conference will lead to an
improved understanding amongst the planners and strategy formulators in our region and country of the significance of sport events and how to secure such events in the most strategic manner. Durban and KwaZulu-Natal are renowned for their ability to successful host major international events of the like the Soccer World Cup Matches, the Comrades Ultra Marathon, Top Gear and the Dusi Canoe Ultra Marathon. I am convinced that SETE 2012 will be also be a key opportunity for this region to showcase its world class sport facilities and ability to host major events. Our province is also wellknown for its conservation efforts, natural attractions, prehistorical and historical sites. Another core benefit of business events is that they stimulate leisure tourism and further business event or tourism opportunities. Research has revealed that as many as 20 – 40% of conference delegates and exhibitors that attend a business event and have a stimulating overall experience of the destination in which it is hosted return as leisure tourists and very often with their family and friends. In addition they very often become key ‘word of mouth’ ambassadors for such regions which assist other potential
leisure tourists and meeting and business delegates to ultimately make up their mind to visit or use such a destination as a meeting place. We have no doubt that you will have this experience in KwaZulu-Natal, an area which we fondly refer to as the ‘Zulu Kingdom”. We look forward to hosting you and have no doubt that your visit to our province will be memorable. Yours Sincerely, Michael Mabuyakhulu, MPP KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism
SETE GALA DINNER PAYS TRIBUTE TO OLYMPIANS SPORTS TOURISM MEMBERS of the public and exhibitors are invited to celebrate South Africa’s Olympic heroes at the gala dinner on 12 September 2012. Those attending include Olympic swimming gold medallist Chad le Clos.

HE Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) Gala Dinner taking place on 12 September 2012, which is to kick off the SETE exhibition (12–14 September) and conference (12-13 September), has also been chosen by SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) to celebrate the hugely successful South African Olympic Team. A night of glitz and glamour is guaranteed, with multipleSAMA winner Lira set to entertain a star-studded crowd that will include Durban-born Olympic gold and silver medalist Chad le Clos. The Gala Dinner will take place at the ICC Durban, and is hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism (KZN DEDT) and EThekwini Municipality. Members of the public will be able to join sponsors, dignitaries, and their Olympic heroes in expressing their gratitude to our Olympic athletes who flew the South African flag
high at the London Olympics. An evening dedicated to promoting South African Culture will see welcomes from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development Tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu and Mayor of Durban James Nxumalo, as well as from a selection of athletes and sports celebrities. Autograph and photo opportunities for guests with athletes and personalities will also take place, allowing local, national and international businesses, sports fanatics, sponsors and supporters a chance to rub shoulders and share in the athletes’ experiences in London. James Seymour (CEO of the Durban KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau, which was responsible for bidding for SETE 2012 - 2014 and acting as the KZN DEDT implementing agency for this event) said that “we are looking forward to showcasing and congratulating the achievements of our London 2012 Olympic athletes at the SETE 2012 Gala Dinner. By sponsoring the SETE event, KZN DEDT hopes to raise the level of awareness amongst sport and event organisers of the wide range of sporting facilities that exist in Durban, and the rest of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as of the successful track record that this region has in terms of hosting significant
events. SETE is able to successfully expose major sport and event buyers and organisers to the sporting facilities and sport sponsoring and support agencies in South Africa”. Sugen Pillay, Director for Business Development at TEPG and SETE Conference Director, said that “we are looking forward to welcoming home our Olympic athletes, especially gold medalist Chad Le Clos, to the SETE Opening Dinner. These athletes have become brand ambassadors for South Africa and will definitely contribute positively to promoting our country as a sports tourism destination – something that SETE is striving to achieve. The evening promises to be a memorable one that will showcase South African culture through world class entertainment, also providing an opportunity to network with industry leaders”. Both the SETE conference and exhibition (12-14 September) are intended to promote the country as a popular sports and events destination by facilitating relationships between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries. SETE RECOGNISES HOW VITAL SOCIAL MEDIA IS FOR ALL EVENTS SPORTS TOURISM SPORTS and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) 2012 organisers’ Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group is proud to announce its partnership with iSportconnect, the world’s largest sports business community.
T
HE partnership will bolster both the scope and efficacy of Sports and Events Tourism Exchange’s online marketing campaign in the lead up to their event at the ICC Durban later this year (1214 September). Tasked with creating synergy between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries and promoting the country as a popular sports and events destination, there is a clear opportunity with SETE 2012 to maximize communication between the various elements with the help of a powerful specialized social media platform like iSportconnect, as well as others like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. SETE Conference Director Sugen Pillay said that “maximising our online presence is a big part of our marketing and PR strategy. Identifying the appropriate social media platform and choosing from one of the many channels available to ensure that our messages are targeting the right audience is crucial, and in this way the specialised nature of the iSportconnect community is an ideal match. The ability to communicate with a captive audience
is crucial, and the user-friendly way in which iSportconnect amalgamates all relevant and useful information renders it a powerful tool in the sports business industry”. iSportconnect offers an exclusive online platform that brings together thousands of sports business professionals worldwide. With a wide range of applications, iSportconnect combines business and social networking, detailed insights into the latest sports business news and market data, listings of business events and executive jobs, as well as market analysis to provide a one-stop shop for the sports business community. Existing LinkedIn and Twitter profiles can be synchronised and updated from iSportconnect, which also has iPhone and BlackBerry applications. iSportconnect has no introductory fees, and has no limit on communication. iSportconnect’s Marketing and Partnership Manager Xavier Cureau said, “We are very pleased to be contributing to the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange event, as this will further expand our image in South Africa, and we look forward to promoting a major event from Africa across Europe, USA and the Middle East”. Oe needs look no further than Africa’s biggest horseracing event, the upcoming Vodacom Durban July (7 July), to see how an effective social media campaign can contribute to the success of an event. Dave Macleod, Gameplan Media Managing Direc-
tor, said that “in its 116th year, the Vodacom Durban July poses numerous challenges when communicating to its extremely diverse audience of potential clients, who each have very different expectations of the event. The core racing community thrives on a nourishing stream of online racing communication, betting and studying form online, and take a major race meeting like the Vodacom Durban July in their stride. They are however outnumbered on the day by the tens of thousands of socialites and fashionistas who need to be reached and inspired to attend this event every year. Social media, and Facebook
in particular, has succeeded in entrenching their loyalty. Research done in 2009 showed that just under 20% of the race day attendance came from outside of KZN, in 2011 that figure had grown by 50%, much of which is attributable to the viral ‘July Fever’ that was cultivated on Facebook. The event Facebook page (The official Vodacom Durban July) is alive with daily banter from its core 6500 followers. Beyond that figure, 60 000 Facebook users a week browse the content of the page and virally the core community that “likes” the page reaches 2 111 244 people through their viral connections”.
This year’s 2nd annual SETE exhibition will feature a number of high profile international and local exhibitors, as well as more than 60 international buyers who have been attracted by South Africa’s solid reputation as a viable location for events. The two day SETE conference (12-13 September) boasts a line up of respected and influential speakers who will engage and exchange ideas that will ultimately enhance South Africa’s sport, tourism, and event industries. As one of the quickest growing types of global travel, the sports tourism industry is estimated to have contributed over R6 billion to the South African economy last year.

JOBURG – ONE OF AFRICA’S LEADING MEGA-EVENTS DESTINATIONS
EXHIBITOR NEWS JOHANNESBURG Tourism will be utilizing the second Sports & Events Tourism Exchange to be held at the ICC in Durban (12 – 14 September 2012) to entrench the city’s position as the African continent’s leading business, lifestyle, leisure, sports and mega-events destination.
A
SIDE from its role in hosting the much anticipated opening and closing matches for the AFCON tournament in early 2013, Johannesburg’s reputation as a premier destination for international conferences and exhibitions will receive a major boost next year when the City hosts three global summits. Acting CEO of Johannesburg Tourism, Phelisa Mangcu, is thrilled with Joburg’s growing list of recent bids won and set to take place over the next few years. “In association with stakeholders, our Convention Bureau continues with its sustained bidding efforts and there is no doubt that these are bearing fruit, contributing substantial economic benefits to our local industry.” These summits will bring visitors from across the world and showcase the city’s opportunities for tourism, trade and investment. •The C40 Summit on Climate change will take place in June 2013 bringing together global leaders, activists and innovators to discuss environmental issues relating to the urban environment. •Mayors and decision-makers from the world’s largest cities will converge on Johannesburg next year for the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Metropolis organisation. •The City will also play host to the One Young World Summit, a global forum of young leaders which is expected to
4
attract some 1 000 delegates from every continent. In line with the City’s Growth and Development Strategy [GDS] - the Joburg 2040 [www. joburg.org.za/gds2040] – the JCEB continues with its aggressive promotion of Johannesburg as a leading global destination for business tourism, as it is a key driver for economic growth and development. “The dynamic JCEB team is geared to assist with supplying all the necessary advice and solutions relating to meetings, conventions, exhibitions and incentives. When you think events, think Joburg - Africa’s most exciting, vibrant and versatile city!” says Mangcu.
A WORLD CLASS HOST CITY WITH THE CREDENTIALS TO MATCH

Approximately 55 international airlines link the City to major centres worldwide, making Joburg one of the continent’s most accessible destinations. The City can comfortably host any event – from small, professional meetings, to massive mega-events. There are approximately 130 venues in Johannesburg of varying capacity, including the four biggest convention centres, capable of accommodating over 5000 delegates. In the past 24 months the City has added some 19 new and refurbished hotels to its diverse accommodation offering. Change Summit (2007) •FIFA Congress (2010) •Moreover, we successfully hosted the world’s biggest sporting event, the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Johannesburg was the epicentre of this magnificent spectacle, hosting the cream of the tournament fixtures and associated events as follows: •15 of the 64 games were hosted in Johannesburg; •The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) was situated in Joburg, which also housed some 5000 international journalists; •The Opening and Closing Ceremonies were hosted in Johannesburg; • 19 of the 32 national teams were based in the City; We are therefore truly a World Class Host City!
INFRASTRUCTURE
THE City of Johannesburg boasts world-class infrastructure that can accommodate events of any magnitude. It is home to 75% of corporate headquarters, 60% of Information Communications and Technology (ICT) enterprises in South Africa and won the right to host the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Home to 13 000 international media and broadcasters, the centre operated 24/7 for six weeks prior to and during the tournament. Hosting the lion’s share (some 32%) of the 2010 Soccer World Cup fixtures and activities, Joburg was at the epicenter of the spectacle and rose to the occasion, pulling out all the stops to give visitors the experience of a lifetime. The location of two major stadiums in the City – along with four additional training stadiums - positions Joburg favourably as a pre-eminent destination for sports tourism and megaevents. With seating for 94 000, our flagship FNB stadium
(known as Soccer City during the World Cup), is the largest in Africa. Aside from the recent Soccer World Cup, Joburg has played host to significant sporting events during the past 15 years with great success. These include the World Cup Rugby, World Cup Cricket and the SA Tennis Open.
TRANSPORT
JOBURG’S World Cup readiness and legacy initiatives included youth development, enhancing tourism service standards, information dissemination, signage and workforce skills. On a broader macroeconomic scale the City now boasts increased hospitality and tourism products, an integrated public transport network (comprising the Gautrain and Bus Rapid Transit system), world class transport infrastructure upgrades (the ongoing highway improvement project) and better connectivity. The BRT covers 120 km and serves as a feeder system to the Gautrain, the country’s first high-speed train, which links the OR Tambo International airport with Sandton, Rosebank and Park Station.
CONFERENCING FACILITIES
JOHANNESBURG is home to a vast array of accommodation and conferencing venues. It boasts some 130 stylish, stateof-the-art conference venues with exhibition, banqueting and superior live staging facilities, equitable with the best in the world. In addition to its superior transport infrastructure (including three airports), Joburg is home to the country’s four largest convention centres (each capable of accommodating over 5000 delegates), along with three international stadiums. This makes it a versatile business and megaevents destination, capable of handing a vast array of events - from small meetings to mas-
sive international gatherings, conventions, concerts and sports tournaments.
TRACK RECORD
IN addition, Johannesburg has a proven track record of hosting many prestigious summits, congresses and meetings for notable international organizations, including the United Nations, UNESCO and The World Bank. Some of the high profile events include UNCTAD IX, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD 2002), Miss World 2008 and 2009 and the World Solar Congress, to mention but a few.
THE SPORTS SCENE IN JOBURG
GREAT weather and world class facilities conspire to make Joburg one of the world’s most active sports centres. Joburg’s annual sports and events calendar includes an impressive array of diverse international events – from the Joburg Open Golf Tournament in January to the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and the Sansui Summer Cup in October and November. Aside from regular rugby and football fixtures during the winter months (including the PSL Soweto Derby), the City also hosts the Soweto Open tennis tournament in April, as well as the Inanda Africa Cup Polo tournament in July and the prestigious BMW International Polo series in August every year. The location of two major stadiums in the City – along with four additional training stadiums – positions Joburg favourably as a pre-eminent destination for sports tourism and mega-events. With seating for 94 000, Joburg’s flagship FNB Stadium (known as Soccer City during the World Cup), is the largest in Africa.
CATHSSETA NAMED AS SETE SPONSORS SPORTS TOURISM CATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, Sports Sector Education and Training Authority) have recently joined this year’s Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) conference (12-13 September) as naming sponsors.
A
S one of 21 SETA’s (sector education and training authority) in South Africa, the partnership of CATHSSETA with the high profile SETE conference is sure to bolster what is already shaping up to be an influential event, featuring the National Sports Tourism Steering committee’s presentation of the national sports tourism strategy, as well as presentations, debates and discussions with a number of high profile international and local speakers. CATHSSETA are indeed a fitting sponsor for the conference, which itself looks to stimulate the exchange of ideas that will enhance the sport, tourism, and event industries in South Africa. According to Mike Tsotetsi, CATHSSETA CEO, “following South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, sports and events tourism was identified as one of the biggest avenues to be pursued and supported in order to boost South African tourism and contribute
to the economic growth of the country”. Tsotetsi also said that “CATHSSETA has a responsibility to facilitate skills development within South Africa by creating strategic partnerships to ensure a meaningful contribution to economic growth across our sports tourism and other sectors. The SETE conference is an existing platform which attracts important decision makers and key industry stakeholders, and our involvement therefore ensures that we have the opportunity to promote our objectives by engaging with the relevant audience at a proven successful annual event”. In support of these objectives, CATHSSETA’s primary aim is to create an environment that allows the youth better employment opportunities through skills development and training within the sports tourism industry, whilst also addressing the shortage of skills in critical areas. “CATHSSETA is looking to realise the government’s priorities of social cohesion and economic growth through tourism and sport, both of have been identified as playing a catalytic role in attracting global tourism for South Africa, and therefore the SETE conference has value for CATHSSETA as it presents a platform for the sharing of ideas around issues central to the sports tourism industry”. According to Director for
Business Development at TEPG and SETE Conference Director Sugen Pillay, “as the official training authority for sport and tourism, CATHSSETA’s participation in this year’s SETE confirms the importance of skills development within the sports and tourism industries. Major international sports events like the Olympics demand high levels of service excellence and therefore CATHSSETA’s role will add value to the industry’s attempts at bringing more international events to South Africa, one of SETE’s core objectives”. Held at the ICC Durban later this year, both the SETE conference and exhibition (12-
14 September) will look to facilitate relationships between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries and promote the country as a popular sports and events destination. To this end, the SETE exhibition will feature an estimated 100 exhibitors as well as over 60 international hosted buyers (IHB’s), whilst the conference programme will include presentations and panel discussions anchored by keynote speakers who are all specialists within their respective fields. The National Sports Tourism Steering committee that was appointed at last year’s SETE conference will also be presenting the na-
tional sports tourism strategy at the conference, outlining the key sports events which SASCOC and its partners will be bidding for until 2030. Focused on identifying the key events which will require government’s support between 2013 and 2030, the plan will be discussed and finalized at the conference. The Sports and Events Tourism Exchange is hosted by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism KZN, and partnered by CATHSSETA, SASCOC and Tourism KZN. SETE RECOGNISES IMPORTANCE OF SPORT SPORTS TOURISM WITH the past tourism focus having been on the Leisure and Business sectors, the introduction of the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) Exhibition and Conference has played an integral part in promoting the new “sports” trend within the industry.
T
HE programme includes a talk by KZN MEC for Arts Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha on Kwazulu-Natal as an events destination, followed by Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula who will introduce South Africa as a Sports Tourism Destination. SASCOC will also speak about its role in positioning South Africa as a sports tourism destination. Other topics to be covered include skills development, Global Communication Strategies for Major Events, sponsorship and bidding. A highlight is Chris Foy, Head of 2012 Games unit Visit Britain Tourism, who will be taking delegates through Visit Britain’s Global Strategy for London 2012. Sports and Events Tourism Exchange provides a platform to: Pursue bidding and hosting of major international events; Promote South Africa as a training destination for northern hemisphere athletes in their winter months and Promote South Africa as a destination for social
participants in sport, exploiting our golf courses, beaches, stadiums and hiking trails. It also promotes the provinces and what they have to offer. Sports tourism and Mega Events in South Africa is estimated to contribute more than R6 billion to our tourism industry. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sports events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals. Research undertaken by South African Tourism on the impact of the Confederations Cup and the Lions Rugby Tour, found that the two events brought in approximately 52 000 visitors and contributed an estimated R669 million in direct expenditure to our economy. More than 90% of these visitors indicated that they would return to South Africa and, very importantly, that they would recommend South Africa as a destination to others. Sport tourism is one of the fastest growing areas of the global travel and tourism industry. Quite obvious are the links between the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Networks – spotlighting the interplay between these markets and the economies of the driving countries. Sport and its allied events play an integral part in the development of all aspects of a countries economy, be it the sociocultural dynamics, job creation, health,
SA Tennis Open
environment or GDP. The pressure to win the bid to host mega-events and reap the rewards thereof, is evident in the increasingly aggressive bidding process that precedes the awarding of mega-events to bidding countries. Eg. London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics – and
the fierce competition from both Paris and Madrid. ITTFA reports that the UNWTO, has been actively advocating to position sport and mega-events in national tourism development strategies in order to maximize their potential as a driver of growth and development.
The Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, with the backing and support of both South African Tourism and the dti, will ensure that South Africa is seen as one of the top Sports and Mega Events destinations. For more information visit www.sportsandevents.co.za.

T
HIS year’s dynamic and progressive Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) exhibition and conference has recently been bolstered with the news that 50 high profile international buyers have already signed on for the events International Hosted Buyers (IHB) programme The objective of the SETE International Hosted Buyer programme, is to facilitate the interaction between inter-
national leaders and buyers and South African Sports and Events Tourism Products. This is achieved through a top-class on-line pre-scheduled meeting system and networking events included in the overall SETE Programme of Events. James Seymour, CEO of Durban Kwa-
Zulu Natal Convention Bureau, said that “attracting international buyers to SETE 2012 is the key component to achieving our goal of promoting South Africa as a destination for international mega events, as well as further entrenching the country as the preferred location for sports and tourism activities for both local and international travellers. As a country we are able to offer top class facilities and services, making South Africa a prime location for all top-level international sports events and concerts”. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT THE OLYMPICS FOR RURAL YOUTH SPORTS TOURISM TEN learners from South Africa’s nine provinces, who are actively involved in school sports ranging from tennis to chess, have been given the opportunity to experience the Olympics live in London. thanks to CATHSSETA.
A
majority of these learners come from rural and impoverished communities but through their determination and perseverance in wanting to see their lives change for the better, they took the opportunities available to them at school to focus on developing their sporting talents, a move that has now afforded
then the opportunity to experience the world’s greatest sporting event live. SASCOC together with the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) identified an opportunity to build on career and vocational guidance for the youth, for which the objective was to identify learners who have already taken part in the International Inspiration Leadership programme which is initiated by the South African British Council, to grow and enhance their love for sport. “As a SETA we are responsible for Skills Development and Training in the sporting world and have a duty to ensure that we
expose our youth to the many aspects and careers that exist in sport. This tour will ensure that coupled with their leadership qualities, these learners get first hand exposure of what it means to be a professional athlete” says Mike Tsotetsi the CEO of CATHSSETA. During their weeklong stay at the Olympics the learners have also played an ambassadorial role at the Ekhaya, a London Olympics home base of the Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA) with the hope that they will use the acquired experience to inculcate a love for sport amongst their peers when they return to their schools and villages. CATHSSETA has also undertak-
en to invest R35million in a bursary programme for underprivileged learners around the country over the next three years. It is our intention to support the education and training
of these learners beyond high school should they still show such keen interest and excel in sport as is currently the case” says Tsotetsi.

SPORTS INDUSTRY UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT SPORTS TOURISM SETE aims to analyse successful sports tourism industries and consult with industry stakeholders.
S
HAPING and advancing South Africa’s development as a sports tourism destination, the National Sports Tourism Steering committee’s presentation of its 17 year strategy will identify the key international events that South Africa should bid for, as well as the domestic events that need governmental support, in order to grow the country’s sports tourism industry. The presentation is sure to garner much interest at the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) conference to be held at the ICC in Durban alongside the second annual SETE exhibition from 12-14 September. Appointed by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) at last year’s inaugural SETE conference, Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group brought together the National Sports Tourism Steering committee, which was tasked with developing and implementing a national strategy that would outline the key sports events which SASCOC, as well as its federations
and partners, will be bidding for between 2013 and 2030. Almost a year of research and careful planning and preparation is set to come to fruition when the recommendations of the strategy are discussed and adopted at the upcoming SETE conference. According to SETE conference director Sugen Pillay, the process of forming the strategy first involved the analysis of case studies of global destinations that have successful sports tourism industries. Here, countries such as Australia, Brazil, Spain and the United Kingdom were studied and key success indicators were identified, which applied locally may contribute to situating South Africa as an internationally competitive sports tourism destination. Working within and developing existing governmental frameworks, the genesis of the strategy understandably took into account all policies and strategies of South Africa’s government institutions relevant to sports and tourism. “The outcome of this analysis resulted in the identification of criteria that will inform government’s decision to invest in and support bids for local events, ensuring that domestic sports events are supported,” said Pillay. Triangulating the information gathered by the case studies and the analysis of govern-
mental policy and practice, the next phase involved consultation with key role-players identified by SASCOC, including a sample of national sports federations and tourism stakeholders, who provided information on the principal international
events that South Africa should aim to host, as well as the key domestic events that need government support should it wish to bolster the local sports and tourism industries. Both the SETE conference and exhibition will look to fa-
cilitate relationships between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries and promote the country as a popular sports and events destination. For more information visit www.sportsandevents.co.za.

TRI-ROBBEN ISLAND POSTPONED SPORTS NEWS
I
T was announced that the inaugural Tri-Robben Island has been postponed to 22 September 2012 due to a harsh weather forecast.
R
OBBEN Island Museum has granted triathletes the privilege of racing two trail triathlons in one day on Robben Island in the first ever Tri-Robben Island race on the 9th of September. Tri-Robben Island offers athletes a truly historical and prestigious experience as they spend a day on the island where Madiba spent much of his time in prison. Tri-Robben
Island offers a truly diverse experience with the swim being in the harbour, and the cycle and run legs taking the athletes to the various landmarks on the island including the Limestone pits, Lighthouse and famous WW2 cannon. The race will consist of a morning sprint distance of a 400m swim, 14km cycle and 4km run with the afternoon race consisting of an 800m swim, 28km cycle and 8km run. Due to the heavy rain and wind forecast for the original Sunday, Robben Island will not permit ferries to run. Although the weather might improve, the organisers of Tri-Robben island cannot take the risk and cancel
at the last minute, as athletes from out of town are travelling to Cape Town for the event. The new date will fall on the Saturday of Heritage Weekend and the race schedule will remain the same. Entries will automatically be transferred to the new date, and refunds are possible. “We apologise for any inconveniences caused, but sadly we are at the mercy of the weather gods”, said Grant Kunneke, organizer of Tri-Robben Island. “We still hope to see all athletes at the event on the 22nd of September”. THE VALUE OF SPORT SPORTS TOURISM CAROL Weaving of Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group, who are the organisers of Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, explains why sport is important. How is South Africa ideally suited for sporting events, specifically mega events? WITH the success of hosting the FIFA World Cup and other major events like the IPL, British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour, Cricket World Cup, Rugby World Cup and other major events – we have the capacity and infrastructure to host more international events. SA was also voted last year by the World Travel Awards as the World’s Best Sports Tourism Destination which reaffirms our position as a mega events destination. What is the value of the sporting events industry? IT 2011 it was estimated that the sports industry contributes about USD 182 billion to the global tourism economy which translates to an 18% contribution to tourism. The FIFA World Cup contributed about R3.6 billion to the SA economy based on visitors’ direct expenditure during the world cup. Is this an industry that is growing? THE 2011 estimate of sport contributing 18% to the tourism economy globally is 8% up from 2006, which means that the industry is definitely growing. Also the travel trends in Europe have changed since the world economic crisis of 2008/09 where research has shown that most Europeans do not travel for leisure purposes but for specific reasons – sport being a key driver for European travel. Is there government support (in the form of incentive or otherwise) in bringing sporting events in to the country? CURRENTLY SA does not have a proactive bidding strategy. Sports Federations have to submit proposals to the Sports Minister via SASCOC for government to issue guarantees to bring events into SA. At this year’s SETE conference a plan
developed by THEBE which outlines the key sports events SA should be bidding for over the next 17 years will be discussed. One of the key recommendations of the plan is the establishment of an Events Fund to support bids for events. What infrastructure would a venue have to have in place to attract a sporting event? IT depends on the event. An Olympic event will require world class infrastructure to accommodate all 26 Olympic codes of sport in one city. An event like the Athletics World Championships will require stadium capacity of 20,000 – so its really event specific. The plan which we developed addresses this issue for each sports code What are the challenges involved? FOR most sports federations the lack of funding is a key issue. The lack of adequate world class facilities for most sporting codes is also a major issue. This is mainly the reason why many federations cannot bid for international events. The plan developed by THEBE and SASCOC which will be discussed at the conference will hopefully address these challenges. How big is the inter-school tournament industry? ITS dependent on each sporting code. SRSA has a school sports program and I’m not sure how successful this is. Rugby, cricket and athletics have been successful in this area but other sporting codes and looking at this as a future growth opportunity What are the limitations of sponsorship? DUE to the recent economic crisis most major corporates in SA have withdrawn or reduced their sponsorships from sports – Standard Bank, Sasol, etc. The market for sponsorships is limited and most sponsors are looking for opportunities that will translate into increased sales with less investment. At this year’s SETE conference we have Adidas speaking about the sponsorship trends in sport and what are the implications.
Carol Weaving
How can a small event management company get involved? THE SETE platform is aimed at encouraging collaboration between the sports and tourism industries. This is an ideal
platform for event management companies to promote themselves to the international buyers, government and sports stakeholders. The conference also presents a great opportunity for event companies to
understand the opportunities available within the sports tourism industry and government’s strategy to grow this industry.

ICC DURBAN TURNS 15
VENUE THE Durban ICC, the first international convention centre in South Africa, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary during August 2012.
“
THE Durban ICC has certainly developed its credentials as South Africa’s foremost international convention centre delivering fifteen years of world class hospitality and service to our many clients”, said Durban ICC’s, Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May Ellingson. The Durban ICC story is remarkable. It is a story of foresight and vision, co-operation, endeavour, bravery, patience and above all triumph. It is a story that the eThekwini Municipality and the citizens of Durban can be justly proud of. The formation of Operation Jumpstart, which was created to kick-start development in the city and region, brought together role players from all sectors of the community. Operation Jumpstart recognised the role that international conferences could play in stimulating the economy of the city and recommended as part of its proposals, a proposal to build an international convention centre in Durban. After
22
many months of discussions and negotiations by the Operation Jumpstart team, the city council approved the proposal to build the centre and the first phase of the development of the Durban International Convention Centre commenced. The then Durban City Council officially launched its international convention centre project with a media briefing held in December 1992. This was followed by a comprehensive feasibility study carried out over nine months by a core team of six consultants supported by additional specialist consultants and included in-depth research programmes and study tours to various Convention Centres in Europe. At the time the Durban ICC was one of the single largest investments made by the City of Durban and represented a statement of confidence by the city fathers and the people of Durban in the future growth and development of the city. November 1994 saw the turning of the first sod for the construction of the Durban ICC by the then premier of KwaZuluNatal, Dr Frank Mdlalose and the Centre was officially opened on 8 August 1997 by President Nelson Mandela. To cater for increasing de-
mand the Durban ICC was expanded with the opening of the ICC Arena in March 2007 transforming the centre into the largest flat floor, column free exhibitions and meetings space in Africa. Combined with the ICC Exhibition Centre, the Durban ICC can provide up to 33,000m2 of conference and exhibition space to clients. The full ICC complex was renamed the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex in 2007 in remembrance of the former Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of the African National Congress. The Durban ICC has proved a pivotal money-spinner for the KwaZulu-Natal economy. It has generated in excess of R1-billion in income over the past fifteen years and firmly established Durban on the global conferencing map. The centre has been the trailblazer for the growth of the conferencing, meetings and exhibitions industry in South Africa with the other major cities in South Africa following Durban’s example in constructing convention centre’s of their own, which collectively have catapulted South Africa into the 37th ranked global conferencing destination and Africa’s number one conference destination in terms of the
ICCA 2011 rankings. “The Durban ICC was originally developed as a catalyst for economic development and growth at a cost of R900-million and it has more than delivered on its return on investment for the city and province.” commented Ellingson. The Durban ICC has contributed significantly to the economy of Durban over the past fifteen years with economic impact studies indicating that the centre contributed approximately R2.7-billion to the gross domestic product of KwaZuluNatal during the 2010/11 financial year. In the same year 3,376 people were employed directly in the province as a result of the activities of the Durban ICC with a further 4,462 employed indirectly throughout the country. In addition the Durban ICC was a net generator of R467-million in foreign exchange earnings in the same year. Measured over the past five years up until the 2011/12 financial year the Durban ICC has made a cumulative contribution to GDP of R11.4-billion. The Durban ICC has become a world-renowned landmark in the city and has developed an enviable reputation with its ability to host the largest and most complex international conferences and meetings including events such as the XII Non-Aligned Summit in 1998, the Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting in 1999, XIII International AIDS Conference in 2000, the World Conference on Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and related Intolerances in 2001, the 2002 African Union Summit and the COP17/CMP7 Climate Change Conference in 2011. Reports from Durban’s leading hoteliers are fulsome in their appreciation of the value that the Durban ICC contributes to the success of their own businesses. Many have indicated that their businesses would have consistently performed at lower levels without the presence of the Durban ICC attracting thousands of delegates into the city on an annual basis. Large events such as the annual Indaba Travel Trade Show and other large conferences and exhibitions consistently contribute to the bottom line of Durban’s hotel, transport, restaurant and retail sectors proving the importance of the
Durban ICC as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainability in Durban. “For those who are still skeptical about the value of the Durban ICC another way of looking at its contribution is to imagine how things might have been if it had not been built. The foresight of those who originally conceptualised the Durban ICC as an important catalyst for economic growth and development cannot be over estimated. The fact that the Durban ICC was the trailblazer for the meetings and conventions industry in South Africa is an enormous accolade for those who pioneered its development in the city” said Ellingson. The Durban ICC will continue to act as a catalyst for the economic well being of the tourism industry in the city and region with a very important role in offsetting the seasonality that exists in the leisure tourism industry, contributing significantly towards the well-being and sustainability of the hotel, transport, restaurant and retail sectors in the city. During the past fifteen years the Durban ICC has been the recipient of many prestigious awards but more recently the centre was again voted Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre by the World Travel Awards. This is the tenth time the Durban ICC has been awarded this prestigious award and has been nominated in this category again this year. The centre is rated as a 5-star venue by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. In addition the Centre is ISO 9001, 14001 and 22000 certified and HACCP accredited, which are internationally recognised quality standards focused on service delivery, environmental management and food safety. The Durban ICC is the only convention centre is the country to have achieved all these certifications. “The success of the past years is indicative of a team that has been totally committed to excellence and creating a sustainable convention centre. Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Durban ICC as a venue has the capacity and capability to host both small intimate events and some of the largest and most complex events in the world.” said Ellingson.
Thank You
O
n behalf of Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group, I would like to thank all our Partners, Sponsors and Exhibitors for the continued support throughout the build-up and planning of the Sports & Events Tourism Exchange 2012.
The success of this event is due to this support, from both the public and private sectors, and to the combined belief that we all, as South Africans, have what it takes to successfully host events, both large and small, international and national – and to compete in
the bidding process on a global level. In our introduction to the inaugural SETE last year, we communicated to all that the time had come for all South African entities to unite to work on the sustainability of the worldclass infrastructure that was
built to accommodate the World Cup in 2012. It gives us great pleasure, as the organisers of SETE, to see our fellow South Africans come together to plan how best to make this happen. I would like to say a very special thank you to James Seymour and his team at
the Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal Convention Bureau for their incredible efforts towards ensuring the success of this event. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Alison Truter, General Manager and the SETE Team
