bureaux, creating national strategies, and building new meeting hotels and congress centres. South Africa’s business-events pedigree speaks for itself, boasting a litany of international and local events such as COP 17, the World Economic Forum, and the 5th BRICS Summit, but it is the upcoming events that really have the world buzzing. With almost 6 000 stargraded accommodation establishments, and in excess of 1 000 star-graded meeting rooms; delegates are spoilt for choice. The country’s legendary hospitality and unmatched natural beauty ensures the enjoyment continues long after the business of the day is done. Across Africa,

the enhancement of public infrastructure is making travel even easier; numerous African associations are being created and are hosting international meetings; visas and bureaucratic barriers are being cut back; skills are being transferred and human capacity increased in every service field; and IT and telecoms solutions are increasingly available wherever needed. By 2030, this continent will be home to 25% of all the world’s population, and the business opportunities will be truly vast. I urge you to bring your meetings to Africa and to experience all that we have to offer. Nina Freysen-Pretorius, ICCA President

alk through any major city in Africa and you’ll be forgiven for thinking that you’re in New York, Melbourne or London; such is the level of infrastructure and skills. South Africa has long been the frontrunner in hosting large-scale business events on the continent, but countries such as Tanzania, Egypt and Kenya have upped their game in recent years and emerged as the darlings of the conferencing scene, and numerous other countries across this vast continent are taking the first steps to position themselves as serious international meetings and incentive destinations: setting up convention

AFRICA

At the Pinnacle of Global Innovation

A

frica is an exciting continent to be on in the 21st century. It is a centre for innovation, for development, and the final frontier for our current ‘civilisation’. But it is so much more than that. Africa is becoming synonymous with new business, unique inventions that completely bypass the current norm, and a creative pioneer in the future of information technology and communication. Granted, it can be daunting for internationals wanting to grow their businesses into Africa, but for local and regional markets, we are now coming into our own. There are still many challenges ahead, but we are already proving our worth to the rest of the world. This exceptionally bright future ahead of us is never more present than in the business events industry. Already South

Africa has made a name for itself in the MICE realm, with a number of worldclass, award-winning convention centres, thousands of top tier hotel rooms across each major city, and easy accessibility coupled with constant growth in investment and infrastructure. Although the country is seen as a gateway into the wider continent, other African regions are beginning to make a name for themselves in meetings and events, too. Egypt and Morocco have become convention hubs for both local and European meetings, with Morocco most recently announcing the construction of Africa’s tallest tower, almost double the height of Johannesburg’s 223m Carlton Centre. The Al Noor Tower (Tower of Light) will include a 200 suite luxury hotel, a trading platform, a conference hall and a large art gallery, as well as a stunning, 100m

atrium that hollows at the tower’s base. The East African Community is also constantly improving its conference offerings. Most recently, Ethiopia has seen a steady rise in association meetings and infrastructure, while Uganda is also beginning to surface as a unique conference destination complete with unforgettable wildlife incentives. Rwanda and Tanzania have consistently been investing in convention centres, and Kenya’s capital Nairobi still holds its own as the business, events and tourism hub on the eastern front. 2014 saw the city added to PwC’s Cities of Opportunities list – the first African city to be added since Johannesburg became part of the report in 2008. “Kenya’s capital represents the dynamic growth and future prospects, both of its country and the continent as a whole,” the company said. West Africa, too, has revealed that it

Africa is becoming synonymous with new business, unique inventions that completely bypass the current norm, and a creative pioneer in the future of information technology and communication.

is a force to be reckoned with. Nigeria in particular has made waves in the last year. Not only are they poised to surpass South Africa as the largest economy on the continent in 2015, but their unique way of using the ‘glocal’ concept in business (a global idea that is localised in order for people to accept or grasp it) certainly has them problem-solving in some rather innovative ways. Most recently Nigeria

announced the completion of its first world-class convention centre – the Calabar International Convention Centre. Although the CICC will only open its doors officially in February 2015, it has already secured bookings for a number of exhibitions and international meetings. Ivory Coast and the greater Francophone population have also been innovators in the way of digital content in West Africa, along with their counterparts in Nollywood, which has now been counted as part of the country’s economic generators. As such the industry has seen a rise in investment from both the government and private sectors. Senegal’s capital, Dakar, has also slowly been improving on a conferencing level. With so much happening, it’s easy to forget that there is still much that needs to be done in order to create a self-sustained conferencing industry in Africa. One of the main challenges that associations on the

continent will face is that of competition and collaboration. In order to find a healthy balance where we all work together towards a singular, ‘big picture’ goal, lines will have to be drawn in the sand and the business events industry and all it entails will have to band together to create symbiotic relationships that challenge the current norms with something better. Some of the ways in which the continent will be able to reach these goals is by continuously encouraging innovation and by incorporating more youth in the business events industry. Creating our own events that rotate between countries would also be mutually beneficial for all – and it is something we’re already beginning to see as more international conferences create multiple African chapters of their global events. So in conclusion, come to Africa. Come one, come all. There are many wondrous surprises in store!

In the Last 20 Years… • The number of accommodation establishments has tripled from just 7,721 to almost 20,000. • Conference venues have doubled from 1,250 to 2,598. • The number of airlines flying to South Africa has grown from 21 to 76 • Tourism’s direct contribution to GDP has had an average real growth rate of 7.3%

outh Africa has long been known as a premier tourism destination, as diverse in its many unique offerings as it is in demographics and languages. But it was really only in the last couple of years that South Africa truly shone as a premier business events destination, both in Africa and across the world. In 2013, the nation gained three places in the International Congress and Convention Associations (ICCA) global rankings thanks to 118 meetings hosted – making it the number one convention destination in Africa and the Middle East. Durban and Cape Town also placed in the Top 100 cities in the world for business events. South Africa also added some impressive credentials to their conferencing badge including the 2013 World Congress on Intensive and Critical Care Medicine, the 123rd International Olympic Committee Session, the International Franchise Expo, the 30th International Congress of Psychology and a host of other business, tourism

Not only did the Sandton Convention Centre bag the Best Large Convention Centre award, but a slew of South Africa’s luxury hotels and airlines won at the World Travel Awards, too. and luxury travel trade shows including Meetings Africa. Added to this was the bonus of having Cape Town named the World Design Capital for 2014, giving the wider region a plethora of coverage in international media. Cape Town was number 4 in Conde Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Cities in the World: Readers’ Choice Awards, and was number one in the New York Times’ 52 Places to Go in 2014. Lonely Planet placed Cape Town third in their Top 10 Cities. The city of Durban also received wide recognition. It was named an Official New 7 Wonder City of the World in December 2014, culminating a successful year with accolades such as the Friendliest City in South Africa, voted by IOL Travel, and one of the World’s most Under-rated Cities by CNN. Durban was also featured in National Geographic’s Smart Cities campaign; one of 18 cities from around the world to be featured. events industry – both in business, travel and lifestyle sectors. The world class venues in each major city are testament to the fact that although a number of African countries are developing their own convention centres, this nation will always retain its reputation for delivering on quality, flexibility and creativity. Infrastructure is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, however. Many other things are happening on the ground, trends are beginning to shift society and so has technology – which means we are at a very exciting time in South Africa, and entering new territory in business events as well. Perhaps most pertinent to mention would be the way that technology has permeated our industry in recent years. business and mega events. Not only did the Sandton Convention Centre bag the Best Large Convention Centre award, but a slew of South Africa’s luxury hotels and airlines won at the World Travel Awards, too. South Africa also featured in both the international categories and African categories in the World Travels Awards last year, proving its worth and quality of service in the industry once again. Associations and destination management companies have been pushing South Africa’s name into global circles more and more thanks to their regional meetings and fantastic client rapport, with companies like Dragonfly Africa raking up multiple wins over the last few years at the Site Crystal Awards. Finally who can forget the sheer number of venues, great and small that South Africa has to offer the world? Infrastructure is the backbone of the

is focused on web hype and coverage. Events themselves are beginning to consider the return on investment in related apps, as well as change their formats to include more advanced audio visuals. Meanwhile, event greening has taken off in a big way, and organic and wholesome food trends are giving SA’s hospitality industry a chance to get back to basics. But perhaps one of the greatest triumphs for South Africa and the wider continent was the nomination of local industry leader Nina Freyson-Pretorius as the new ICCA President. As the first African ever to lead the international organisation, it is now abundantly clear that South Africa is on the threshold of a tremendous time for the MICE industry. With this in mind, let us band together, foster collaboration and innovation and as the country’s slogan goes, ‘inspire new ways.’

ASSOCIATIONS Plenty of Potential in Africa

014 was a big year for associations in Africa. Not only did South Africa rise in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings with 118 ICCA recognised meetings hosted in 2013, but Cape Town and Durban were also rated as Africa’s top two cities for meetings and events. It goes without saying that this has secured the country’s position as the top business events destination on the continent – with Kenya and Morocco in tow. Associations are known for having the potential to drive business events forward and in South Africa, the sector has been growing consistently. In 2010, Meetings Africa saw its first Association Day as part of the annual conference and expo and since then, it’s become a firm

part of BOND Day (Business Opportunity Networking Day); attended by association representatives from across the African continent. “The objective of the event is to build the national and pan-African association communities, to promote engagement with international associations and to create major macro-economic benefits and lead development for the country,” says Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo, Chief Convention Bureau Officer at the South Africa National Convention Bureau. One of the major associations on the continent is the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI). SAACI has played a huge role in the conferencing sustainability movement, and is a founding member of the Event Greening Forum along with

a number of other associations – the Exhibition & Event Association of Southern Africa (EXSA), the Technical Production Services Association (TPSA), the Southern African Tourism Services Association (SATSA), the MICE Academy, the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA), SA Roadies Association (SARA) and the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA). According to their mandate, the “aim of the Event Greening Forum (EGF) is to promote and embrace sustainable and ethical business practices within the events industry in South Africa, with an initial focus on meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions and events.” The EGF has been instrumental in promoting and encouraging wise waste control, green eventing apps and a host of other

Cape Town and Durban were also rated as Africa’s top two cities for meetings and events. This has secured the country’s position as the top business events destination on the continent – with Kenya and Morocco in tow.

initiatives to facilitate these goals. More than that, however, is the way in which these associations and others help standardise the industry in Africa. No longer is the continent the ‘Wild West’ of business events. Dirk Elzinga is Managing Director of Convention Industry Consultants and an all-round association and convention guru who’s served in countless industry roles. He recently shared a unique anecdote that sums up where associations are in Africa now: “All of us were stunned into speechlessness three years ago at an ICCA Africa workshop in Nairobi, when an almost retired Ugandan professor, a bit timidly, took the microphone and asked, ‘But what do you mean, what is a PCO?’ We, the experienced players in the international congress business…had no clue that

there were people out there who had no clue about the existence of something like a PCO,” he explains. “There are many Professional Conference Organisers in South Africa now. But things were different 15 or 20 years ago, before the first congress centres opened in our country. Most PCOs do reasonably well. In the slipstream of new and modernized congress infrastructure, PCOs successfully created a market for their services. “The South Africa story can be repeated. New convention centres will soon open for business in Calabar (Nigeria) and Kigali (Rwanda). Other projects in Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia will follow. SAACI plans to open up branches further afield on our continent. Excellent! Plenty of opportunities for partnerships are on the horizon. Who will be the first?”

I

n 2014, the South Africa National Convention Bureau launched their Rise with Us campaign through renowned regional conference and expo, Meetings Africa. The campaign was designed to stimulate and encourage business between states on the continent, as well as showcasing the country’s potential as a global and continental business-events destination. This goal is well on its way to being achieved, with a high volume

of international meetings confirmed for the next few years. And because of South Africa’s investment in Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) infrastructure, there are now over 1,700 meeting venues across the country. International convention centres are located in every major city, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Durban, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth and the largest venues accommodate over 20,000 delegates –

complete with the latest technology and communications infrastructure. Added to an already stellar portfolio is the fact that South Africa is fast becoming a conferencing hub for medical professionals, with Durban securing the 2016 International AIDS Conference for a second time, and with events like the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress, the 17th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology and the

19th International Symposium on Dental Hygiene all taking place in SA in 2014. Other business sectors it easily attracts are mining expos, business and tourism trade shows, and sport-related conferences and mega events. “South Africa has some of the most unique and interesting conferencing destinations in the world,” says Zelda Coetzee, National Chairperson of the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI). “Add to this the creativity, innovation and professionalism of the people who work in the conference industry, as well as a variety of world-class venues, and your expectations will be exceeded.” Morocco is also growing into a strong business events market in the Northern Hemisphere, with established

ties to Europe and the Middle East. Most recently, it announced that the Middle East and North African Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) would be hosting its first dedicated event for North Africa in September 2015. “Morocco represents an attractive investment market, with growing wealth, strong macroeconomic policies, and lower cost bases for business aviation players,” Ali Al Naqbi, Founding Chairman of MEBAA, said of their decision. Kenya has long been an established base for business events on the Eastern part of the continent – especially with its capital, Nairobi, making a name for itself as a tech hub in Africa. In recent years it has hosted numerous expos and conferences in the renowned Kenyatta International Convention Centre. Its tourism offerings are also phenomenal, making the nation a

popular incentive and pre- and post-event tour destination. But although it seems like Southern, East and North Africa will continue to snatch up most of the market share and MICE honours for now, South Africa in particular is passionate about creating a unified African sector. “We need to collaborate and unite with our counterparts on the continent if we want to be a destination to be reckoned with on the business events front,” SA Tourism CEO Thulani Nzima said in May 2014, “The business events market is vast and varied. There is enough for everyone – but it will take collaboration, partnership and understanding that we are working to unleash the potential of business events for the benefit of the continent, not just our country.”

rade shows have long been a lucrative part of the business events industry of South Africa. Not only is it one of the most diverse nations on the continent in terms of venue offerings, but its expertise and strength in successfully hosting large expos has been proven time and again. A quick visit to BizTradeShows.com shows almost 200 shows taking place in 2015 alone, with a number of large, annual exhibitions already confirmed for the following few years. Gary Corin is the Managing Director of Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery, the

organisers of Hostex, Markex and other shows. “Exhibitions are the ideal platform for interaction, enabling in-depth discussions in generally informal settings. Research shows that the majority of visitors to an exhibition arrive with an agenda, making personal contact that much more valuable,” he recently told BizCommunity. CEIR’s global research shows that 58% of visitors attend exhibitions for hands-on interaction with products, and 51% of exhibitors attend because of the personal interaction with potential clients. The study also revealed that exhibition leads cost 56% less to close than

sales calls, with 87% of delegates sharing information obtained at exhibitions with their superiors. This gives one a rather good idea of how important exhibitions are for stimulating both the local and global economy. And if anyone was ever in doubt, UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry says that studies have shown “exhibitions are among the top three most powerful and cost effective forms of marketing.” But it’s not only South Africa that has hosted some impressive exhibitions – although it goes without saying that they

Kenya’s capital city Nairobi is host to a number of annual shows, especially in the hospitality and security sectors, while national tourism trade fairs are popular across Africa, from Tanzania and Zimbabwe to Botswana, Nigeria and further afield. Zambia, too, is coming into its own, and with Calabar, Arusha and Kigali all in the process of completing large capacity convention centres, much lies in store for the wider continent. This is an exciting time in the local exhibition industry. Not only are we at a point where we can offer the same,

outstanding exhibitions as our peers in more developed countries, but it’s also an ideal time for regional chapters of events to grow and expand. Gary Corin sums it up nicely: “We’ve seen a high number of our international exhibitors returning due to their successes achieved in sales, sales leads and search for local agents. I believe there is excellent opportunity for further growth in the conference and exhibition industry in South Africa and, as exhibition organisers, we will be extending our reach to the rest of the world to attract exhibitors and visitors.”

INCENTIVE TRAVEL No End to the Possibilities

A

frica has one of the most diverse, exotic and popular tourism portfolios in the world. Not only can one experience Johannesburg’s exciting township life then hop on a regional flight to the famed Victoria Falls just beyond South Africa’s border, but there are a host of unique wonders that can be found within the country’s boundaries. This, coupled with a growing market in destination management, has secured South Africa’s place as a leader in incentive travel, with a number of southern African companies offering travel packages to places like Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda and many other central states. North Africa, too, has secured its place as an affordable and convenient holiday destination for Fully Inclusive Tour travellers from Europe. Its unique cultural heritage and natural beauty are coupled with frequent flights to create the ideal option for tourists looking for something more exotic than their usual beach holiday. East Africa – Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda in particular – still sees millions

of tourists annually thanks to its natural attractions such as Mt Kilimanjaro, safaris and world-renowned beaches, spas and resorts. Ethiopia and a few other regions are also beginning to see a rise in luxury hotel portfolios, which signifies that these countries will soon also be reaping the benefits of incentive travel, if they aren’t already doing so in certain areas. That said, South Africa still remains a preferred choice when it comes to destination management companies, and their ability to create unforgettable incentive trips for businesses – both regionally and internationally. Companies like Dragonfly Africa have paved the way with their highquality, world-class offerings, with the company raking up a ninth SITE Crystal Award in 2014. Dragonfly’s own clients are testament to their quality service. As Dave of BCD M&I, a company based in the US told the DMC, “It certainly takes all of us collectively as partners to make experiences come to life. None of us can do it alone, and to have a partner like you [Dragonfly] that we can rely

on to deliver excellence from start to finish is really special and significant. I can’t begin to tell you the challenges we do encounter operating programmes around the world. And everything, as you know, isn’t equal. We are not fortunate to have all of partners bring the level of service that Dragonfly Africa does. There are DMCs that are challenging, ok, good, very good, and those who sit at the top of the DMC food chain. Dragonfly Africa is one at the pinnacle – which we have seen from both the US and EMEA [Europe, Middle East & Asia] teams who have engaged with your company. You make us and our clients look good, and you give the participants experiences of a lifetime.” This driven attitude of wanting nothing but the best for clients permeates the incentive industry in South Africa, with many companies realising how important the business events industry is, not only in facilitating their livelihood, but also in driving tourism to the country. As such, their standards are constantly being improved, creating a healthy and strong incentive industry with boundless variety.

WESTERN CAPE

Where Breath-Taking Beauty Meets Artistic Innovation

S

ituated on the southernmost tip of Africa, the Western Cape is one of the most beautiful and diverse provinces of South Africa. Not only is it a melting pot of ethnicities, but it is also home to some incredible biodiversity. The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the world’s six plant kingdoms and is unrivalled in its richness of plant species – over 9,000 species, half of which are found nowhere else on earth. The Western Cape is divided into roughly six regions including Cape Town, called the ‘Mother City’ for its historical significance, the Cape Winelands with its rolling vineyard fields and panoramic views and the Garden Route, complete

with wildlife safaris and adventure sports. Other main regions are the Cape Overberg with whale watching and shark diving opportunities for the brave, the Karoo, a semi-arid land with fascinating caverns and caves, and the West Coast, known for its seafood and stunning annual wildflower blooms. The province and Cape Town in particular has been successful in both the business events and the tourism arenas. Most recently, the Cape Town International Convention Centre has hosted the 39th World Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress, the 17th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, Power & Electricity World Africa and various other renowned

business trade shows like IBTM Africa, WTM Africa and AfricaCom among others. The city’s tourism hotspots, like the V&A Waterfront, are some of the best performing attractions in the country.

Centre for Creativity In 2014, Cape Town was given the prestigious title of World Design Capital. This gave the city the unique opportunity to showcase and develop its cultural and creative sectors through hundreds of artistic initiatives. Cape Town has also for many years played host to the Loerie Awards, as well as the much anticipated International Jazz Festival which takes place annually in March or April.
