Creativity flourishes when one’s surroundings inspire innovation, leapfrog thinking and a desire to create memories that last. In Africa, a continent comprising 53 vastly different countries, the boundaries of creativity are stretched daily. Some of humanity’s most progressive ideas, visionary leaders, next-generation inventions and collective knowledge sprang from Africa and are shared with the world. Africa, the birthplace of humanity, and in South Africa, where the actual Cradle of Humankind can be visited, have emerged spectacularly as the destination to host a business event. For an association conference of 20 000 delegates, to a meeting of 10 members of the C-Suite, a gala function for industry elite, and an incentive trip for topperforming team members, let the professionalism, experience and expertise bring your event to vivid life. Enhanced by its state-of-the-art venues and facilities, South Africa today can meet the demands of any business event and will consistently deliver an impeccable result. - Lance Gibbons, Publishing Editor

MEET IN AFRICA Top 10 Reasons to Host Your Event in Africa 1. Value for Money Many countries in Africa has relatively weak currencies when compared with the Euro, the US dollar, and the British Pound. This works in the favour of international clients, who spend far less on their business event than they normally would in other leading destinations. 2. Expertise Professional Conference Organisers and Event Planners, particularly in South Africa, have decades of experience in the planning, facilitating, designing and roll out of major business events. Global events such as COP 17, the World Economic Forum and many others on a massive scale have all been successfully held on the African continent. 3. MADE IN AFRICA ways of showing an employee appreciation, fostering loyalty and encouraging self-

Manager at Ker and Downey Africa, a luxury DMC that has pioneered African travel since 1946. “Top companies are after unique and different experiences for their employees in an attempt to increase the stature of the company and inspire top talent to want to work for them,” he explains. “The result of this is the trend toward experiential, remote and unique destinations and experiences. In Africa specifically, this is resulting in a move away from purely coastline incentive trips and into more adventurous experiences such as bush walks with the Maasai in Kenya, or mokoro boat safaris in the Okavango Delta. We definitely see this trend continuing; the pressure on companies to continue raising the bar and increasing their attractiveness to potential employees is only going to increase over the next decade.” There is a common misconception that Africa is one country, when in fact Africa is home to 53 countries, which all have a unique flavour and offer a diverse range of experiences. difference to the delegate’s experience. The SANCB is proud to offer on-site event services as part of its range of support services. The objective of this service offering is to enhance the delegates experiences, and put into perspective the value of the delegate’s visit to our country, over and above the value of attending the conference programme itself.

UNPACKING THE LEGACY OF BUSINESS EVENTS Our value proposition as an industry has been changing from one based on delegate and organiser spending to the value of what these events actually achieve for organisers, participants and host communities. As simple as it sounds, this in fact has huge implications, because it places the business-events industry at the very centre of both the global economy and the underlying scientific, professional, academic, business and social advancements that drive it.

The Importance of Bureau-Led Research The outputs and legacies to be identified and quantified in the SANCB-led studies will cover a broad spectrum, from the value of networks and business transactions arising from an event to medical advancements like improved disease awareness, research and treatment practices. Also, to be explored are the benefits that hosting events can deliver to the host community, including profiling a particular country or city in connection with key elements of their economic or social agenda or attracting new talent to key sectors. Century City Conference Centre |

Cape Town’s leading venue, Century City Conference Centre and Hotel

offers world-class conferencing and events. Voted by leading business travel associations as the Best Large Hotel Conference Venue in South Africa1, Century City Conference Centre continues to raise the bar in the MICE industry. Now in its third year, the centre can attribute their knockout success to its detail-driven approach and big-picture thinking. This mix is essential when it comes to the smooth running of the large variety of events hosted at CCCC. The centre is known for its ability to host everything from intimate gatherings of around 10 people, to large exhibitions, seminars, concerts, and more, for up to 1 900 guests - all with incredible attention to detail. The venue has been designed with the event planner in mind, and as those who have hosted events at the venue can confirm, the experience is an exceptionally personalised one. Planners deal with a single member of the Operations team for the duration of their event, and key specialised contacts within the business are able to assist with absolutely anything a planner may need – including a Plan B. Aside from forming part of a four-star green star-rated 2 mixeduse development, Century City Conference Centre has put a number of energy-and water-saving measures in place. A few examples of their sustainability efforts include all taps running off automatic timers, toilets being flushed with recycled water only, a solar energy system on the roof, and recycling stations conveniently located throughout the venue. 1. Comprising Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, the North African region is often considered part of the Middle East due to its Islamic history and strong associations with the Arab world. Nevertheless, it is still a vibrant participator on the African continent and is a powerhouse of meetings and events, particularly thanks to its colonial background and close trade links with European countries across the Mediterranean.

3. A Changing World View

Not only is the older generation finding it increasingly difficult to cope and navigate this strange new world, but even younger event professionals struggle to keep up with the sheer pace of development. This creates a need for continual adjustment and education across technology, marketing and related sectors.

BUSINESS EVENTS OF THE FUTURE

As the world undergoes the fourth industrial revolution, business events are increasingly offering streams on how to navigate these fast-paced changes. A large part of this includes dedicated technology sessions – from tech bars and the latest tech trends to more practical advice such as hosting hybrid events, how to spend less on AV, and mitigating risk with event data. Why it’s important Not only is the older generation finding it increasingly difficult to cope and navigate this strange new world, but even younger event professionals struggle to keep up with the sheer pace of development. This creates a need for continual adjustment and education across technology, marketing and related sectors.

6. Goodbye Gala, Hello Mixer Expensive, formal gala dinners are increasingly being phased out in favour of more relaxed networking opportunities and mixers. One of the main reasons for this change is the current global economic climate, where purse strings are incessantly being tightened. Another reason is that the delegates of today are less inclined to enjoy a formal programme when what they truly need to do is maximise face-to-face meetings. Why it’s important This may be the digital age, but there’s still nothing better than meeting people in person. An event that facilitates as many networking opportunities as possible – sometimes even between conference sessions – is always going to come out on top. Delegates need to meet in order to conduct the all-important business or outcomes that they ultimately attend your conference or exhibition for.

7. The Grouping of Events Multiple events and conferences are now pairing up to offer extra value for money and to appeal to ‘binge’ attendees. We’ve seen this happen more often over the last few years, even in southern Africa, with prime examples such as Africa Travel Week that brings ibtm africa, ILTM Africa,

Other Trends of Note • An increased focus on health and wellbeing is apparent in the food offerings, conference streams and pre- or post-event programmes. • Cybersecurity – and security in general – is a hot topic on the cards for upcoming events, which will likely inform both destinations and the running of events. • As Destination Managers and Convention Bureaus offer similar services, there is increased pressure for differentiation and redesign. • Sexual harassment is a hot topic that continues to grow, and the events sector is an ideal stage for harassment or violence. A more active role is required to prevent such situations.
