The Filmmakes Guide to South Africa 2012

Page 1

DISCOVER ALL SOUTH AFRICA HAS TO OFFER As the world responded to the global financial crisis, the local film industry continued to grow, and the film economy continued to be a major contributor to the South African economy as a whole. The Department of Trade and Industry is proud of the supporting role it has played in making SA a top international film destination. The contribution film can make goes well beyond the revenue created by individual projects and this year we will be looking closely at how film can contribute to the SA economy through its supporting industries. Manufacturing industries related to film are just one aspect of this. The overall result in supporting these industries is positive, because as the supporting services and infrastructure around film grows and becomes more established, so more films will come to South Africa. It is our hope that last year’s decision to lift the cap on the film rebate will encourage international productions to bring their projects to South Africa. The rebate, which used to be restricted to R20 million, allows international productions to claim back 15% on their total spend in South Africa. 2011 saw several major movies being shot in South Africa, but the highlights had to be Dredd, Chronicle and Safe House, large productions which will continue to place South Africa on the international film map. With the changes to the rebate, and our continued support for every aspect of this industry, including support industries, it is our hope that large international productions will continue to film in South Africa, bringing not only revenue, but also skills and cachet to this country.

SOUTH AFRICA: HOLLYWOOD’S HOTTEST BACK LOT

EDITORIAL | 09 © Mark Lanning

2011 was a breakthrough year for the South African film industry. Time Magazine called the country “Hollywood’s hottest back lot.” The Hollywood Reporter named Cape Town Film Studios one of seven “state-of-the-art production facilities giving Hollywood a run for its movie” and announced “South Africa has arrived.” The Location Guide hailed South Africa as an “ever-reliable production hub.” And Variety said the country “is currently the most cost-competitive it’s been in years.” South Africa is earning a reputation for making films that look twice their budget. Chronicle, a teen superhero flick shot in South Africa for just $12m, earned rave reviews

internationally and topped the American box office on its release in February 2012, as did Safe House, a CIA-themed thriller which was shot and set in Cape Town. Dredd producer Andrew Macdonald told Time that filming in South Africa allowed him to make a graphic novel adaptation “that will look like $100 million” for less than half that figure. American producer Peter Safran similarly told Variety that Paul Walker’s upcoming Johannesburgset thriller Vehicle 19 “would have been twice as expensive to shoot in the US.” South Africa has one of the oldest film industries in the world, dating back to the late 1800s, so the country offers a great value location without the risk often associated with

emerging locations. You’re in safe hands here: since democracy, South Africa has hosted a wide variety of film and television shoots, including Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe winners and nominees like Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, Ed Zwick’s Blood Diamond, Terry George’s Hotel Rwanda, HBO’s Generation Kill, Fox’s 24: Redemption and The History Channel’s America: The Story of Us and Gettysburgh. In addition, South Africa has hosted shoots for some of the most awarded commercials in the world, like Traktor’s Fox Sports adverts, which won the Cannes Lions Grand Prix.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT & FUNDING Not only is South Africa value for money, it offers a variety of funding possibilities, something that sets it apart from regional competitors like Kenya, Namibia or Mauritius. In 2011, The Department of Trade & Industry (dti) removed the R20 million ($2.5 million) cap on its incentives, which have been roundly praised for their ease of use. The Foreign Film and Television Production Incentive offers a 15% rebate on qualifying South African spend, while the South African Film and Television Production and Co-Production Incentive offers 35% on the first R6 million and 25% for the remainder. To qualify, foreign films, documentaries, animation and television projects

must shoot for at least four weeks and complete half their principal photography in South Africa, spending a minimum of R12 million. Co-productions must shoot for at least two weeks and complete half their principal photography in South Africa, spending a minimum of R2.5 million. The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), a self-financing, state-owned national development finance institution, has also plays a key role in financing films, especially co-productions. The IDC caps its investment at 49% of the overall budget. The National Film and Video Foundation, the body mandated to grow the local film industry, is another source of funding for both development and production,

although its investment is capped at a maximum of R1m. All of South Africa’s main service companies are experienced co-producers who can help you tap into the dti incentive and the other funding options outlined above, as well as international funds they have relationships with. There are a number of European funds that African cinema can apply for, like The World Cinema Fund, The Hubert Bals Fund, The Jan Vrijman Fund and Fonds Images Afrique. South Africa has co-production treaties with The United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and France, as well as memoranda of understanding with India, Sweden and Algeria.

AMAZING CREW & FIVE STAR SERVICE

EDITORIAL | 13

AFS Productions

Alex Garland, the writer and producer of Dredd, isn’t alone in calling the local South African crew “first-rate.” Iconic directors like Clint Eastwood and Anthony Minghella (RIP) have been saying similar things for years, while Safe House costars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds both described South African crews as “amazing.” There’s no need to import heads of department and other crew when filming here: if anything South Africa is starting to export them internationally, like Mickey Kirsten heading up the special effects on Liam Neeson’s box office hit thriller Unknown in Germany or Moira Meyer working as the costume supervisor on Oscar-winning war drama The Hurt Locker in Jordan.

The quality of our crew can be seen in a slew of recent Emmy nominations for the likes of art director Sylvain Gingas and set decorator Emma Eunson (Gettysburg, 2011), costume designer Jo Katsaras (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, 2009), set dresser Emelia Weavind and casting director Christa Schamberger (Generation Kill, 2009), and sound mixer Colin McFarlane (24: Redemption, 2009), as well as Emmy wins by special effects supervisor Max Pullman and costume supervisor Abigail Metcalfe (Gettysburg, 2011), DOPs Richard Matthews (Great Migrations, 2011) and Lee Doig (Survivor, 2010), special effects coordinator Anthony Stone (Generation Kill, 2009), and underwater cinematographer Charles Maxwell (Blue Planet, 2001).

Most South African crew have trained in multiple areas, so they have a unique understanding of other departments. Their high productivity allows for shorter shooting schedules and more value on the screen. They all speak English and aren’t unionised. They’re so efficient it can feel almost military. As Safe House director Daniel Espinosa told Cape Argus journalist Theresa Smith, “In Sweden it’s like you are the director, but nobody gives you any coffee. It’s more like: ‘Why don’t you help me drag this lamp over?’ Here it’s, ‘Yes, boss,’ and stuff like that. So I’m trying to tell them to call me Daniel, but they refuse.”

A CHAMELEONLIKE COUNTRY Without knowing it, you’ve probably seen South Africa doubling as just about every country in the world. In recent shoots the country’s rare mix of first and third world locations have stood in for modern-day Seattle (Chronicle), 19th century America (Gettysburg), Sudan (Machine Gun Preacher), Britain (Great British Story), and most of the planet in History of the World and Mankind, as well as Pakistan and India (Strike Back). Before that, South Africa served as Iraq (Generation Kill), the Urals (10 000 BC), and 57 different countries in Lord of War alone, from the Middle East to Bolivia to West Africa. As Time’s Alex Perry wrote, “Versatility and convenience of location are keys to South Africa’s moviemaking appeal,” as you can find the entire world within a few hours’ drive. To make your life easier, there are film commissions in Gauteng and Cape Town, the main production hubs, as well as film offices in Durban, Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela Bay and Zululand. South Africa’s most talked about new location is Cape Town Film Studios, a 17 000m² complex of four soundstages which opened late in 2010. Jim Dodson from 20th Century Fox, the executive producer on Chronicle, called the studios “a world-class, state-ofthe-art facility.” Stephen Fry, while on the set of the latest adaptation of Mary Norton’s classic, The Borrowers, tweeted that he was “deeply impressed” with the studios, which he said “make Pinewood, etc, look very shabby.” The studios are helping South Africa attract more highprofile projects than ever before, from US box office hits Safe House and Chronicle to graphic novel adaptations like Dredd to major TV series like the adaptation of Kate Mosse’s Labryinth, an archeological mystery that was Britain’s second-bestselling book in 2006 behind The Da Vinci Code.

INTERNATIONAL ENDORSEMENTS

“It’s my favourite city I’ve shot in….” Safe House star Ryan Reynolds speaking about filming in Cape Town to Argus journalist Theresa Smith “You can’t help but be in a good mood when you’re in Cape Town. I am sure after this more people will go there and make movies now, especially movies that show Cape Town for Cape Town.” Safe House star Ryan Reynolds to journalist Nadia Neophytou “That’s one of the beautiful things about Cape Town: it’s so diverse, from downtown and the townships to the ocean and the mountains.” Safe House star Denzel Washington to journalist Nadia Neophytou “In the end I thought Africa was more interesting because it’s a new landscape. It has a different kind of socio-economic problem which you can have in the background of the movie… So it’s not like a non-space where most of the American action films take place now, where they just use the background as a nice set. I wanted to have something more.” Safe House director Daniel Espinosa “There are only a few places in the world that can handle this kind of movie. South Africa is comparable to any of them.” Dredd producer Andrew MacDonald to Time’s Alex Perry “The whole experience was extremely positive and we would readily do it again.” Alex Garland, Dredd’s writer and producer “I hope to bring another feature back real soon.” 20th Century Fox’s Jim Dodson, the executive producer on Chronicle, about Cape Town Film Studios “I have absolutely loved shooting here. There are tremendous crews and the locations are limitless. Desert, beach, urban, jungle … whatever you want to shoot, it exists in South Africa. There are active and supportive funds, like the IDC, which is increasingly rare internationally. And it’s a much less expensive place to shoot, but you don’t sacrifice anything for that reduction in cost.” Peter Safran, producer of Vehicle 19, in Variety

Jameson Irish Whiskey joined Kevin Spacey and TriggerStreet Productions to launch a new international short film competition The winner of Jameson First Shot will receive a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to direct Kevin Spacey and work with his award winning production company. Jameson Irish Whiskey, in collaboration with highly acclaimed actor, Kevin Spacey, and his company, Trigger Street Productions launched the First Shot competition in 2011. The competition was designed to discover talented screenwriters and directors from Russia, South Africa and the USA. Jameson First Shot comes with an incredible prize where one winner from each country will have their script made into a short film by Trigger Street Productions, starring Kevin Spacey. Kevin Spacey commented: “I want to give talented people out there a shot at reaching their goals for the first time. Jack Lemmon once said to me – ‘If you’re doing well, send the elevator back down’. I’ve done incredibly well and it’s because the material I found early in my career was from first-time writers, first-time directors, first-time playwrights. If it weren’t for that talent I wouldn’t have a career. So if one person gets a break then the competition has been successful.” Talented film-makers looking for their big break were invited to submit a script up to seven pages long onto www. jamesonfirstshot.com. Inspired by the theme of a legendary, humorous or very tall tale, the shortlist will be judged by an expert team including Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti, President of Trigger Street Productions (‘The Social Network and ‘21’). The nominees will then go through to the next round, where they will show their directing

skills by shooting a scene supplied by Trigger Street. One winner from each country will then enjoy a prize like no other as they fly to LA to shoot their script and direct Kevin Spacey, all with the backing of his award winning production company. The final three films will be voted on by the public to decide the overall winner of the Jameson First Shot competition. The competition is set to run for the next three years. Howard Southern, International Marketing Director, Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard added: “We are delighted to be working with Kevin Spacey and Trigger Street Productions on such a unique film project. Jameson First Shot perfectly embodies our attitude towards film; whereas public perception is of a closed and exclusive world, we want to open it up and give emerging talent the opportunity to be mentored by some of Hollywood’s biggest names. It’s a truly exciting proposition and we look forward to seeing three fantastic films.” KEVIN SPACEY Kevin Spacey is one of the most acclaimed actors of our time. He has won two Academy Awards and a Tony, plus two National Board of Review Awards, a Critics Circle, Evening Standard, Olivier and a BAFTA. His two SAG Awards reflect his standing among his peers. Kevin has been nominated for six Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Grammy. He has produced and directed for both the stage and screen. He has also pioneered new content and distribution models with the creation of TriggerStreet.com as an online community for unrepresented screenwriters and short film directors.

The site immediately took off with thousands of online users uploading their work, reviewing work created by their peers, and participating in online competitions and short film festivals. Trigger Street has recently announced a mega-deal with Netflix for House of Cards, a new 26-episode political thriller starring Kevin Spacey. Kevin is also the Artistic Director of the Old Vic, London, where he had a full schedule of plays planned for the 2010 – 2011 season. DANA BRUNETTI Feature film and TV producer, Dana Brunetti is Kevin Spacey’s long time business partner and President of Trigger Street Productions. His film credits include 21, Fanboys, Bernard and Doris and Casino Jack. Recently, Dana produced The Social Network, which received numerous awards including eight Academy Award nominations. Dana was nominated twice and won a Golden Globe for The Social Network, as well as many others including the National Board of Review and The Critics Choice Award. Dana also produced the multi-Emmy nominated film Bernard and Doris. Architect of several groundbreaking deals, Dana set up the eight year Anheuser Busch sponsorship of TriggerStreet.com, AB’s longest sponsor outside of sports. Dana’s latest success is a megadeal with Netflix for new TV political thriller House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey, which continues the collaboration of Kevin Spacey and Social Network director, David Fincher. Dana also oversees Trigger Street’s web based initiatives. TRIGGER STREET PRODUCTIONS Trigger Street Productions is an entertainment production company

formed by Kevin Spacey and his producing partner Dana Brunetti in 1997. Trigger Street’s credits include Golden-Globe winning The Social Network and the Emmy-nominated Bernard and Doris, as well as numerous other film productions including 21, Shrink, Fanboys and The Big Kahuna, as well as stage productions of The Iceman Cometh and Cobb. TriggerStreet.com was launched in 2002 as an online community for unrepresented writers and filmmakers. It proved immensely popular in its first few years, with thousands of online users uploading their work, reviewing work by their peers and participating in online competitions and short film festivals. The name “Trigger Street” is a reference to an actual street in Spacey’s boyhood home of Chatsworth, California where a friend of his lived on the ranch of infamous American cowboy actor, Roy Rogers. Having built the ranch before the property boom, Roy got to name the streets in the neighborhood – one

of which he named after his horse, Trigger. Having spent much of his childhood there, Spacey decided Trigger Street would be a name befitting his production company because (in his words) “it was a street that just went on and felt endless to me, so ultimately that was why I chose the name for the company”. Today, Trigger Street Labs provides a platform for exposure and discovery. No matter if you’re an aspiring filmmaker or writer, established professional already in the business, or just an enthusiast with an interest in film and story-telling, there will be something here for you. JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY Jameson Irish Whiskey is the world’s No 1 selling Irish whiskey and is amongst the elite of the fastest growing international spirit brands in the world. The success of the Irish brand is down to its great quality and smooth taste, coupled with a fantastic heritage, established in 1780 by the legendary John Jameson. It has all the quality

credentials to allow it be consumed straight, but is versatile and is equally great when mixed. The interactive website included details on how to enter plus exclusive videos and tips from Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti,. Through the Jameson first shot website, entrants were given advice on their scripts. They were urged: “Write with good structure – try and write a script with a beginning, middle and end; Come up with a good story that you will be able to make into a short film; Make sure your short film has good shots and good sound; Enter your script by the deadline – this business is all about making deadlines; Create something that makes you stand out.” Contacts: Clair van der Mescht Pernod Ricard South Africa (Jamesons) 021 405 8800 082 679 1669 clair.vandermescht@pernod-ricardsouthafrica.com

FILM AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION INCENTIVE Zambezia © Triggerfish

In October 2011 the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) scrapped the cap of R20 million, making the country an attractive destination for bigger budget films. The decision to do so was led by the discussion with various stakeholders and the industry. The South African Government recognises the film industry’s potential and has prioritised it as one of the sectors under Industrial Policy Action Plan 2 (IPAP2). The growth of the film industry could have a tremendous impact on economic development in terms of employment and exports, while stimulating a host of supplier industries. The South African Government offers a package of incentives to promote its film production industry. The incentives are Foreign and South African Production and Co-Production. The Foreign Film and Television Production Incentive is used to attract foreign-based film productions to shoot on location in South Africa. This incentive is only available to foreign-owned qualifying productions with a Qualifying South African Production Expenditure (QSAPE) of R12 million and above. The objective of the incentive is to encourage and attract large budget films and television productions that will contribute towards South Africa’s economic development and international profile and increase foreign direct investment. In order to qualify for this rebate, the THE DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY

WHAT IS THE FILM AND PUBLICATION BOARD (FPB)?

What is the FPB?

Established by the Films and Publications Act of 1996, The Film and Publication Board (FPB) exists to classify films, videos, DVDs, computer games and certain publications for their suitable age viewership. The FPB’s mission is “We regulate the media environment through the classification of content” by: 1. Maintaining relevance to the values and norms of South African society through scientific research; and 2. Balancing the right to freedom of expression with an obligation to protect children from exposure to potentially disturbing, harmful and inappropriate materials; and 3. Protect children from sexual exploitation in media content, in order to educate the broader South African society to make informed choices.”

Classification of Films, Games and Publications

In terms of the Films and Publication Act,

the Board is required to publish guidelines used to determine what is disturbing, harmful and threatening to children and to advise the viewing public about such images and scenes. The FPB CEO constitutes the classification committee whose members are required to view every film to be distributed in South Africa to ensure that the classification decision is based on the law and accepted community standards of tolerance in terms of religious a nd cultural diversity; gender; ethnicity; etc. The classification of films and interactive game products remain the main activity of the board, both in terms of workload and income earned from industry tariffs. All members of the public who write to the Board to complain about film classification decisions or who give the Board general feedback on the guidelines use for classification receive replies to their correspondence. Only pornographic publications need to be passed by the FPB before they are released on the market. The Board does, however, deal

with complaints received from the public regarding specific publications.

Compliance Monitoring

FPB monitors visit distributors and exhibitors of films; DVD and games in order to ensure that outlets are properly registered with the board and that compliance with Act is adhered to in terms of sections 27 and 28 which prohibit the possession or distribution of child pornography to children. Exception in terms of section 24 is granted for the distribution or viewing of X18 pornographic materials where the holder of the licence complies with provisions of the Act to conduct his/her business in adults’ only premises. Distributors are therefore required to ensure that the age restriction, consumer information and any other condition imposed by the Board are clearly displayed in all advertisements and on the cover or packaging of every film.

LONG FORM REACHES CRITICAL MASS While service has traditionally formed the backbone of the South African film industry, the country has been making roughly 20 films a year for the last three years, kickstarted by The Department of Trade and Industry rebate: of the record 24 local releases in 2010, 17 were rebated films. These are largely for the local market, which has shown positive growth recently. Leon Schuster’s Schuks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to 2010 set a new box office record for a South African film in 2010, raking in over R37m, while for the first time non-Schuster films like Spud, Liefling and Jock are breaking through the R10m barrier. At the time of writing, Platteland was still on circuit and had already made

R8m, while four of the top five films had shot in South Africa: Safe House, SemiSoet, Material and Chronicle. This critical mass of local content is allowing directors to mature. For example, Craig Freimond has just released his third film, the critically acclaimed Material, while Gray Hofmeyr will release his 13th later this year with the Leon Schuster/Kenneth Nkosi blockbuster Mad Buddies, the first feature from Disney South Africa. Increasingly, South African content and directing talent is making waves internationally. Darrell Roodt’s Yesterday was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 and an Emmy in 2006, the year Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi won the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 was a smash

hit in 2009 and quadruple Oscar nominee in 2010, while Oliver Schmitz’s Life, Above All made the Oscar Foreign Film shortlist in 2011 and earned local teenager Khomotso Manyaka a place in Time’s list of the 10 Best Movie Performances of the Year. 2012 started with the news that White Wedding and Paradise Stop director Jann Turner had signed on to direct two episodes of The Big C, which earned Laura Linney a Golden Globe in 2011. Jann’s following a long line of South African directors who’ve carved successful careers overseas, including Roger Michell (Morning Glory), Wayne Kramer (The Cooler), and Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans). POSITIVE DIRECTION

The commercials sector grew to R1.26m turnover in 2010/2011. There were more local commercials (54%) than service jobs (42%), but service commercials generated more shoot days and turnover. Traditionally, most of South Africa’s service work comes from Europe and America, but in 2011 an increasing amount came from the emerging economies of the BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Nigeria is also emerging as a key client. At Cannes Lions, South Africa won two Silvers for public service announcements from Frieze Films’ Jonty Fine (POWA – Waking Up The Neighbourhood) and Giant’s Robin Goode (Brandhouse Love to Meet You, which was also included in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Director Awards and won another Silver at D&AD.) South African also won Bronzes for Bouffant’s Chloe Coetsee (Avril Elizabeth Home – Jumbled) and Jump’s Michael Middleton (Exclusive Books – Chain Mail). Velocity’s Adrian de sa Garces’ was shortlisted for Chicken Licken - Hotwings Craving, while in the craft category, Velocity’s Greg Gray was shortlisted for his direction and the sound design on Lunchbar – Voice Over. It was a disappointing showing after 2010’s success, when Topsy Selinah by Egg Films’ Kim Geldenhuys won Gold and South Africa had over 30 ads shortlisted. Velocity Films’ Keith Rose, who won a Bronze at Cannes Lions in 2010 for Allan Gray – Legend, was the jury president in the Film Craft category in 2011. Rowan Cloete from Long Island Media was shortlisted in the Non-European Branded Films category for Converse – Jacky and Sipho. AFDA’s Garon Campbell and Danielle Erasmus were shortlisted in the Non-European Film School category for The World Bullies You When You Can’t See. At the local Loerie Awards, Love to Meet You and Alan Irvin from Picture Tree’s McDonalds campaign won the only Television Golds, with Velocity topping the production company rankings overall. The most talked about advert in South Africa in 2011 came out too late in the year for any of the awards. Directed by Bouffant’s Dean Blumberg, Nando’s - Last Dictator Standing tapped into the Arab Spring zeitgeist by showing Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe reminiscing about happier days playing with other dictators. The early favourite going into the 2012 awards season, Last Dictator Standing already has over a million views on YouTube and has been featured in Time, Huffington Post and BoingBoing, among others.

LOCAL ANIMATION GOING GLOBAL TOP LEFT: Clover © Shy the Sun; BOTTOM LEFT: Zambezia © Triggerfish

EDITORIAL | 59 Tuffies © Lung Animation Ribena © Shy the Sun Zambezia © Triggerfish

In 2011, Duncan MacNeillie’s Jock became South Africa’s first 3D animated movie released at the local box office, where it earned over R12 million, while Deryck Broom’s Lion of Judah became South Africa’s first animated feature released in America. A third South African 3D animated feature, Wayne Thornley’s Zambezia, is scheduled for release this year, with international stars Samuel L. Jackson, Abigail Breslin and Jeff Goldblum providing the voices. Triggerfish, the animation company behind Zambezia, is already in production on its follow-up, Anthony Silverston’s Khumba. The local audience appetite for animated content is promising: Super Strikas, an animated, soccerthemed television series, averages over a milion views an episode in South Africa, with a growing presence in Malaysia and The Philippines. South African animation talent is increasingly working internationally, from Brad Stilwell on The Pirates! and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole to Alfie Oliver on Sucker Punch and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. The skills transfer into the local industry has also been helped by recent workshops by Aardman Animations’ co-founder Dave Sproxton; former Pixar technical director Jessica Abroms; Howl’s Moving Castle casting director Ned Lott; and Kevin Geiger, who helped design Disney’s production pipeline. While South Africa is only beginning to produce animated features, it’s an old master when it comes to animated commercials and short films, as seen in a string of international accolades in 2011. Clover – Way Better, animated by BlackGinger and co-directed by Shy the Sun and Cab Films, won Best Animated Commercial at the EME Awards and Best Visual Effects at The Mobius Awards; Ian van Heerden and his team of ex-Animation School students won The Short Animation Film category at The New York Festival’s International Television and Film Awards for In Sickness; and Sunrise Productions won two Platinum Awards at the Pixie Awards for Jungle Beat – Elephant and Firefly. On a sadder note, 2011 marked the closure of Clockwork Zoo, the company which pioneered service animation in South Africa, working on the likes of Florrie’s Dragons for Disney UK and Caillou for Cookie Jar Entertainment. Thankfully, the principals have founded a new company, Sea Monster.

STILLS LIFE With over 11 000 shoot days a year, the South African stills industry contributes at least R650 million a year to the South African economy. It’s one of the most advanced stills industries in the world, with studios, labs, crew, diverse talent and the latest equipment. BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Marks & Spencer and Canon were just some of the brands to shoot here in 2011. Members of the South African Association of Stills Producers are increasingly expanding internationally, with nearly half of them now working elsewhere over the South African winter. Locations like Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Thailand are particularly popular with South African companies, who are also increasingly acting as a gate-

way to the rest of Africa. South Africa is not just a service destination for stills shoots though: our photographers compete with the best in the world. Harry de Zitter is third on Lurzer’s Archive’s all time ranking, while Clive Stewart is 7th and Des Ellis 20th for the last three years. Brent Stirton won The World Press Photo: Nature and Contemporary Issues categories in 2012, after Jodi Bieber won Photo of the Year in 2011. David Goldblatt won The Kraszna-Krausz Best Photography at The 2011 Sony World Photography Awards for TJ Johannesburg Photographs, which comes packaged with novelist Ivan Vladislavic’s

Double Negative. Mikhael Subotzky won the Discovery Award at Recontres d’Arles for Ponte City, his collaboration with British artist Patrick Waterhouse. Mikhael is also one of the current Standard Bank Young Artists of the Year. Pieter Hugo won The Seydou Keita Award at Recontres de Bamako in Mali and is currently shortlisted for the 2012 Deutsche Borse Photography Prize for his book, Permanent Error. Seagram Pearce was a semi-finalist at The Hasselblad Masters in the up and coming category in 2011, as was Keith Bernstein in editorial and Antti Viitala in fashion / beauty, architectural and portrait.

A CREATIVE COUNTRY South Africa’s creativity spreads across all aspects of the film industry. The country has a rich history of documentary filmmakers, like Oscar-winning director Jon Blair and producer Don Edkins, Oscarnominated Justine Shapiro, and Emmy-winner Francois Verster. This year it was epitomised by producer Xoliswa Sithole, whose documentary, Zimbabwe’s Forgotten Children, won a Peabody and a BAFTA, where it competed against another of her documentaries, Lost Girls of South Africa (Dispatches). On the local front, Khalid Shamis’ Imam & I was the most popular local film and overall audience winner at Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, ahead of 2012 Oscar nominee If a Tree Falls and 2011 winner Inside Job. Dear Mandela won Best Documentary at Durban International Film Festival Despite continued disappointments with The South African Broadcasting Corporation, the local television industry also regularly produces award-winning work, like Curious Pictures’ Hopeville, winner of the Rose d’Or for Best Drama and Miniseries in 2010. Curious Pictures was the most awarded production company at the 2011 South African Film and Television Awards, with ten SAFTAs spread between Hopeville, Rhythm City, 4Play, One Love and A Country Imagined. But South Africa’s most popular export at the moment is the fabulously freaky music videos for Die Antwoord, which deliver anywhere from a couple of million views to nearly nine. The latest, I Find U Freeky, a collaboration with photographer Roger Ballen, might be their weirdest yet. Cape Town and Johannesburg’s massive, two-year-old World Cup stadiums are regularly filled with visiting international bands, so, with the country having serviced or created music videos for the likes of Coldplay, Westlife and Tokio Hotel in recent years, this could be the industry’s next growth area. At Cannes Lions, Pieter Hugo and Michael Cleary won the Non-European Music Video category at the CFP-e/Shots Young Director Awards for Spoek Mathambo – Control. Animator Mike Scott also had a hit last year with We Come Together, his pixel-inspired music video for Goldfish, which has had over 1.5 million YouTube hits so far.

AFCI APPOINTS SOUTH AFRICAN LEADERSHIP

ŠJuice Films

Cape Town-based film sector specialist Martin Cuff has been appointed the Executive Director of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). The AFCI is the global body representing more than 340 Film Commissions in over forty countries. The mission of the AFCI is to be essential to the advancement and promotion of excellence in the global production of media on location, in an ethical and professional manner, and members are Film Commissions from around the world that have typically been set up by cities, counties, states, provinces or national governments to promote local economic development through the harnessing of the international film business. Martin ran his own Film Commission consultancy for six years, completing projects in Serbia, Republic of Georgia, Bosnia, Turkey and Romania, as well as throughout South Africa. Prior to that, Martin was the first foreigner hired to run a US Film Commission when he joined the Colorado Film Commission from 2005-2006, and he also ran the Cape Film Commission in Cape Town South Africa from 2002-2005. From 2003-2004, Martin was also responsible for the Cape Town Film Permit Office, the agency tasked with permitting thousands of productions annually. He was also a Director of the Independent Producers Organization of South Africa, and the Chairperson of the South African Association of Stills Producers, the organization representing commercial photographic production in Cape Town. He began his film sector service as Chief Operations Officer of Sithengi, the Southern African International Film and Television Market, an event designed to reintegrate post-boycott, post-apartheid South Africa into the global film business, and to create affordable, effective ways of connecting African and other broadcasters with film and television product.

JOE ALBLAS MOTION PICTURE STILLS PHOTOGRAPHER Making a film is collaboration... a mindful, emotional engagement of all the cast and crew working together to each make their valuable contribution to what eventually appears on the screen. Motion picture stills, as the foundation of the publicity and marketing campaign, have to communicate, at a glance, all values of the project - its essential DNA - from story to headline actors, genre to production quality, and beyond. Capturing these elements in a range of distinctive images - this is the challenge peculiar to the art of the motion picture stills photographer.

CREATIVE DIRECTORS

The 2011 film jury at Cannes Lions must have felt like a South African networking event, with two expat South Africans – jury president Tony Granger, the global chief creative officer of Young & Rubicam, and Chris Garbutt, the executive creative director at Ogilvy Paris – alongside Jupiter Drawing Room’s Brad Reilly. This indicates that creative directors are becoming something of a niche export area for South Africa. Another expat, Leon Jacobs, creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi Geneva, won Gold at Cannes Lions for Otrivin – Shoelace, while Damon Stapleton left TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris at the end of 2011 to join Saatchi & Saatchi Australia as executive creative director. Matthew Bull, who founded Lowe Bull in South Africa, and Andrew Whitehouse, who founded FoxP2, teamed up last year to launch The Bull-White House in New York as a sister agency to FoxP2. The Bull-White House will be competing for work in New York against, among others, Johannes Leonardo, owned by another South African, Jan Jacobs. Of course, there’s no shortage of talented creative directors and ad agencies left in the country. For example, Net#work BBDO won the Radio Grand Prix at Cannes Lions in 2011 for Mercedes Benz, becoming the first local agency to claim three Grand Prixs at Cannes Lions in just five years. At this year’s Loerie Awards (South Afica’s annual awards for the advertising and creative industries) FoxP2 was the top ranked agency, followed by Net#Work BBDO, Ogilvy Cape Town, DDB South Africa and The Jupiter Drawing Room (Cape Town).

“Nothing had prepared me for the sight of medieval Carcassonne come to life on the hill,” author Kate Mosse wrote on her blog after visiting the Cape Town Film Studios’ 13th century backlot for Labyrinth, the Ridley Scott & Associates/Tandem adaptation of her bestselling novel. “It is, of course, an illusion, but at the same time, the streets, the houses, the market, the dogs and horses, the straw, it felt as near to stepping back in time as anything I’ve ever experienced. Tom Hannam’s extraordinary sets and the attention to detail, the integrity, of every sword, every cup, every stone, every door, all built in South Africa for the production, were mind blowing. And Moira Meyer’s costume designs for the medieval characters, hand-stitched, hand-dyed, hand-aged, were outstanding… I felt only lucky to have so enthusiastic, so talented, so energetic a team of people working on the production.” South Africa offers a variety of experienced production designers,

art directors, set builders, and set dressers, while Cape Town Film Studios has created a variety of new possibilities for set building, as well as for stunts and special effects. South Africa offers Emmy-winning stunt and special effects specialists like Anthony Stone and Max Pullman, as well as the likes of Pyranha Stunts, Stunt SA, and Mickey Kirsten, who headed up the special effects on Unknown for producer Joel Schumacher in Germany. Chronicle, which featured superheroes throwing vehicles into buildings in the centre of Cape Town, is a good example of what’s possible, especially when South African special effects meet local post production. Director Josh Trank praised South African visual effects supervisor Simon Hansen for helping create “flying like you’ve really never seen in a movie before. It is really the most realistic flying I’ve ever seen.”

WRANGLING ANIMALS When Andy Flemming, creative director at M&C Saatchi Sydney, needed to literally make an elephant fly for an Optus and Qantas advert, he brought the spot to South Africa. As he told The Location Guide, “I would recommend South Africa to any feature or commercial in a heartbeat… The value, light, experienced crew and sheer number of beautiful locations available make it a dream location. There’s also the fact that zebras, hippos and elephants can be seen just walking about the place, which is rather special.” At the World Travel Awards, all the finalists for the World’s Leading Game Reserve came from Africa, with seven from South Africa, including the winner, Shamwari Game Reserve. South Africa offers the big seven: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, whales and sharks, all within close proximity to city centres. This has helped create a vibrant wildlife film and photography industry in South Africa, as well as one of the leading wildlife filmmaking festivals in the world, Wild Talk Africa, which happens every two years. Adrian Bailey and Robyn Keene-Young’s Swamp of the Baboons (aka Swamp Troop) was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2010, while Deryck and Beverly Joubert’s Eye of the Leopard won a Wildlife Emmy in 2007. At the most recent Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, Thomas Peschak had three images commended, Wim van den Heever was also commended, and Peter Chadwick won the Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife. South Africa also has a wealth of animal wranglers, who make sure that working with talent that can eat you isn’t as daunting a proposition as it could be. Animal welfare inspectors are also easily available.

EDITORIAL | 109 The quality of South African post-production remains a well-kept secret, but local edit suites, sound studios and VFX companies have had a busy year in spite of being under-utilised by the foreign clients who make use of locations and production companies. These facilities offer a wide range of sophisticated services, including film and digital dailies transfers, offline and online editing, grading, colour management, mastering, final sound mix and motion graphics. For example, new kid on the block Searle Street Post has the fastest scanner in the country, as well as Flame, Quantel iQ, a Truelight-accredited Baselight, Flexxity, Clipster and data lab. Searle Street Post has worked on several high-profile projects, including Death Race: Inferno; Dutch feature De Heineken Ontvoering; the third season of Strike Back, with Left Bank Pictures; and internationally acclaimed commercials for Allan Gray, Stimorol, The Organ Donor Fund and Valpre. Another newcomer worth watching is Collective Dream, the new owners of Waterfront Studios. South Africa’s visual effects industry continues to grow in leaps and bounds. BlackGinger handled most of the earthquake sequence on China’s blockbuster Aftershock, which won Best Visual Effects, among other prizes at the 2011 Asian Film Awards. South African visual effects talent work internationally on some of the biggest projects in the world. Ula Rademeyer is the lead texture artist at Weta Digital, responsible for the likes of Avatar, Rise of Planet of the Apes and The Adventures of Tintin, as well as upcoming blockbusters The Avengers, Prometheus, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and The Hobbit. Similarly, Jan Cilliers was the lead Flame compositor on Fast Five and senior compositor on Tron: Legacy; Etienne Andlau was the stereoscopic conversion compositor on the second Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows; and Tyson Cross was the lighting technical director on Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. With more freelance visual effects artists available than ever before and rumours of an imminent post production rebate, South Africa’s just waiting for the right project to show what it’s truly capable of.

TOURISM IN SOUTH AFRICA

Tourism, which contributes 7.7% to South Africa’s gross domestic product, has been named the country’s new Gold. It’s easy to see why. South Africa had the most favourable repeat visitor rate for foreign arrivals of all benchmarked countries in South African Tourism’s 2010 Global Competitiveness Study, with the country’s tourism industry growing at 15.1%, substantially faster than the 6.6% global growth. South Africa is expected to be in the top five growth destinations by 2014. The country has been racking up tourism accolades. For example, Cape Town is TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Destination of 2011 and The World Design Capital 2014; Table Mountain is one of the New7Wonders of the World alongside The Amazon; South Africa was voted the Africa, Indian Ocean and Gulf States Golf Destination of the Year 2011 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators; Singita was named The World’s Top Hotel in Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2011 readers survey; and Villa Zest was named The World’s Trendiest Hotel by TripAdvisor in 2011. At The World Travel Awards, South Africa won 60 of the 80 awards in the African category. South Africa was also named the World’s Leading Sports Tourism Destination and took home a number of other global awards, including Leading Boutique Hotel (The Saxon); Leading Conversation Company and Leading Wildlife and Safari Game Reserve (Shamwari); Leading Eco-Lodge (Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – Dwyka Tented Lodge); Leading Luxury Lodge (Thanda Private Game Reserve); Leading Luxury Train (The Blue Train); and Leading Luxury Apartments (The Regent). South Africa also has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Cradle of Humankind, Mapungubwe, Robben Island, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Cape Floral Region, Vredevort Dome, uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, and Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape.
