PRESENTING THE LATEST FINNISH FILMS

FIN NISH FIL MS 20 15 1

Dear Friends. You are holding in your hands our latest catalogue of Finnish features, documentaries and short films. 2014 was a great year for Finnish Film both nationally and internationally. Our domestic market share continues to grow and was 28% last year. Internationally last year opened with a high note as Selma Vilhunen’s short film Do I have to Take Care of Everything? was nominated for Academy Award in the Short Live Action category. Jalmari Helander’s Big Game premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was instantly nabbed for US distribution. Peter Flinckenberg’s amazing camerawork in Concrete Night earned him a nomination for the 2015 Spotlight Award of the American Cinematographer’s Association. 2015 promises to be no less intriguing year for the Finnish film. Antti J. Jokinen will bring to the screens Wildeye, a fierce love story set against the historical backdrop of Lapland War fought in 1944-1945. Klaus Härö has helmed The Fencer, a gripping drama situated in 1950s Estonia while Petri Kotwica has directed Absolution, a drama about one faithful car journey and the devastating repercussions it has on the lives of all the involved. One of the most eagerly awaited films in 2015 is our largescale international co-production, Mika Kaurismäki’s The Girl King. Malin Buska magnificently stars as Sweden’s Queen Kristina, an enigmatic young woman who changed the course of history. Finnish documentary films have always been of great quality. Joonas Berghäll’s previous documentary film The Steam of Life took the world by storm, so his second feature-length documentary Mother’s Wish is on everyone’s list of must-see films. You are welcome to explore the rest of the films in this catalogue and find your own personal favorites. We will be happy to help you with the screeners of your choice. The Finnish film catalogue will be kept up to date online at catalogue.ses.fi where you can also enjoy the trailers or teasers of the films as they become available.

BECOMING ME MATKA MINUKSI

BECOMING ME follows three young women, each of whom writes a blog on her life and struggles with her own and contemporary society’s expectations. Elli has a pro-anorexia blog, even though she herself would like to recover from the disorder that has led her to attempt suicide. Laura tries to shake depression and self-loathing with the help of a mother-like therapist. Despite of the 40 000 fashion blog followers every month, Juulia is rather lonely and doesn’t feel comfortable facing new people and unexpected situations. The film is a journey towards the slow process of accepting yourself, reaching out for others and trying to find the lost feeling of belonging.
