How to use

Make sure that you know the location of, and have read the instructions for, the following:

• If the burning liquid is in a drum, tank or container, aim at the far inside face. Allow the foam to flow across the surface of the liquid to smother the fire.

Carelessness with cigarettes and matches can cause fires, although fewer people smoke and it is illegal in enclosed public spaces. Many companies provide ashtrays or non-combustible containers outside to encourage smokers to use designated smoking areas and to discard cigarettes before entering the premises.

Arson is by far the most significant cause of serious fire in industry and commerce – and it is on the increase. Many attacks are mindless and opportunistic, so it is vital to deprive the potential arsonist of both the temptation and opportunity to start a fire.

Injuries sustained in a fire may include burns and breathing problems as a result of smoke or fume inhalation. All of these can be life-threatening and may lead to unconsciousness, and death.

If members of the public have regular access to the premises, it is important that fire drills should also take account of their safety. During a fire drill, some staff may be asked to ‘role play’ members of the public.
