Know your extinguisher.

INHALATION OF FUMES

– know your escape routes?

Cover burns with plastic bag Inhalation of smoke, gases or toxic vapours can or similar. be lethal. Remember: do not put your own life at risk: smoke or fumes that have accumulated in a confined space may quickly overcome a rescuer who is not wearing protective clothing.

– keep escape routes and fire equipment clear and unobstructed?

Fighting the fire

• Crouching helps you keep clear of smoke and avoid heat from the flames.

Use only on small fires.

... being aware

... being careful

Know what to do

• Switch off – and unplug at night (unless the machinery is in constant use).

Basic training in emergency fire procedures should help you develop instinctive reactions – so that you act fast and appropriately.

• Avoid overloading circuits or overheating equipment.

You should know:

• Make sure any electrical equipment you use is well maintained.

Remember your number one priority is to get out, and get the fire brigade in.

If fire breaks out Calling the fire brigade Dial 999 and say FIRE BRIGADE. Wait until you are put through. Speak clearly and tell them:

If it is big, don’t fight it.

– that there is a fire – the address of the premises – the nearest road junction

When to use

– vital life-saving information: if people are trapped on the premises; if highly flammable or hazardous substances may be involved

Most fires, except those involving live electrical equipment or flammable liquids. • Direct the jet at the base of the fire.

Water

1. Shout out!

• Keep it moving across the area of the fire. • If the fire is spreading upwards, aim at the lowest point of the flames and work up. • Seek out any hot spots after the main fire is extinguished.

2. Ring the alarm!

FOAM/FOAM SPRAY

1. Raise the alarm – shout FIRE!

SMOKING

When to use

2. Break the glass of the nearest fire alarm point.

How to use

Make sure that you know the location of, and have read the instructions for, the following:

• If the burning liquid is in a drum, tank or container, aim at the far inside face. Allow the foam to flow across the surface of the liquid to smother the fire.

• Fire alarm points. • Emergency fire instructions.

– be sure that all cigarettes are completely extinguished

– The name of your fire safety officer should be clearly displayed on these. • Fire exits and escape routes.

• Fire fighting equipment.

Do not empty ashtrays into other rubbish!

RUBBISH AND WASTE

• Keep escape and storage routes clear.

• If the burning liquid is contained or spilled, aim at the near edge of the fire with rapid sweeping movements. Drive the fire towards the far edge until all the flames are extinguished.

– Do you know the different colour codes for fire extinguishers? Do you know more than one way to get out?

– These should be posted next to all call points on the premises.

Remember your number one priority is to get out – and help others to do the same. Make sure everyone is aware!

• Report to official assembly point. Designated fire safety officers/fire wardens should: – check that everyone has escaped

All staff should:

– risk your own life to save property – stop to collect personal belongings

Get out! Don’t be a hero.

– use lifts

– use in confined spaces where there is the risk of inhaling the fumes – hold the discharge horn since it gets so cold that layers of skin can stick to it

Help others out of the building.

– take a roll call of all staff when the premises have been evacuated

7. Report to your designated assembly point. DO NOT:

Carbon Dioxide

• Follow exit signs to the nearest exit. • If one exit route is blocked by smoke, use the nearest alternative route.

6. Leave by the nearest exit – do not put yourself at risk. Dry Powder

• If the liquid is falling, aim at the base of the flames and sweep upwards. • If the fire involves electrical equipment, switch off the current, and aim straight at the fire. If the equipment is enclosed, aim into any vents or openings. Do not:

3. Call the fire brigade or ensure that someone else has done so. 4. Attack the fire with extinguishers or hose reel, but only if it is safe to do so.

How to use

– Do you know how to activate the equipment and use it effectively?

Remember: it is your company’s responsibility to ensure that fire signs are displayed throughout the premises, are highly visible, and that they give clear essential instructions. It is your responsibility to be familiar with them.

Then:

Once out stay out!

EVACUATION

2. Help those who need help to leave the premises.

5. Close (but do not lock) doors if the fire is not under control.

Fires involving flammable liquids or electrical equipment.

– Do you know what type it is: hose reel or fire extinguisher?

• Instructions on how to call fire brigade.

• Take care your own clothing does not catch fire too.

If you hear the fire alarm:

When to use

If someone’s clothing catches fire:

• Call for medical aid at once. Anyone suffering from burns should be treated for shock.

1. Make sure everyone is aware of the fire. Foam/ Foam Spray

• If the liquid is not contained, stand well back and aim with a gentle sweeping movement so that the foam drops onto the surface of the liquid. Do not aim the jet directly into burning liquid DRY POWDER AND CARBON DIOXIDE

– Do you know the nearest alternative route if your escape is blocked by smoke or flames?

Most businesses inevitably produce large amounts of rubbish in the course of a normal working day, but remember: fires and rubbish are natural partners.

• Check hidden areas every week:

Most fires involving flammable liquids.

– who your fire safety officer or fire warden is Know your fire signs

• Observe no smoking rules. • Never smoke in high risk or storage areas.

Call the fire brigade!

– DON’T HANG UP until the operator has confirmed the details • Force the person to the ground. Then wrap a rug, carpet, coat etc around him/her.

If you discover a fire:

– your fire signs – your immediate action in the event of fire

Cut the risks

3. Call for help!

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

• Take special care with portable equipment.

Carelessness with cigarettes and matches can cause fires, although fewer people smoke and it is illegal in enclosed public spaces. Many companies provide ashtrays or non-combustible containers outside to encourage smokers to use designated smoking areas and to discard cigarettes before entering the premises.

Keep exits clear!

– keep fire doors shut at all times? Emergency procedures

Noisy, distressed breathing; impaired consciousness leading to unconsciousness.

How to use

If fire breaks out in your workplace, it is vital that you know exactly what to do. Your life, and the lives of others, may well depend on your actions.

– know the type of fire-fighting equipment, and how to use it?

Signs

• Follow the instructions for the extinguisher chosen.

– if there is any risk of your escape route being cut off, either by fire or by smoke

Use electricity wisely

Keep it clean and tidy

Fire signs and systems Do you: – know where fire alarm points and emergency instructions are located?

– it is too big, with flames reaching the ceiling

• Report any faults, such as frayed leads or damaged insulation, immediately.

• Bin all waste immediately; take it out every day.

– switch off and unplug at night? – wear your ID card at all times?

– if any hazardous materials are involved

... preventing arson

Know your exits!

Do you: – observe no-smoking rules? – close windows and doors?

If the casualty loses consciousness, follow the ABC of Resuscitation.* DO NOT: touch injured area; burst blisters; or apply lotions, ointments, creams etc.

Know your visitors.

Day-to-day habits

– foam for flammable liquids – dry powder or carbon dioxide for flammable liquids or electrical fires

WATER

ELECTRICITY

• Be extra vigilant if you allow members of the public to smoke on the premises.

– potential sources of fire, such as flammable materials left lying around, or poorly stored? – people on the premises who behave suspiciously? Use lots of water.

4. Cover the burn with clean non-fluffy material to protect from infection, e.g. cloth, a clean plastic bag, cling film.

DO NOT FIGHT A FIRE IF:

• Report any irregular or suspicious behaviour. • Report any suspect bags or packages.

– don’t empty them into other rubbish

– vital life-saving information: if people are trapped on the premises; if highly flammable or hazardous substances may be involved – DON’T HANG UP until the operator has confirmed the details The Fire Protection Association runs a wide range of training courses throughout the country. Fast Guides

– faults in equipment which can start fires?

3. Remove any jewellery, watch or clothing from the affected area – unless it is sticking to the skin.

– water for most fires, except those involving flammable liquids or electrical equipment

Action on fire risks

– faults in, or damage to, equipment which prevents fires?

What to do 1. Reassure constantly; make the casualty as comfortable as possible; make the casualty lie down.

• Make sure that the fire is completely extinguished. Smouldering or hot areas can reignite.

Use your sense when storing flammables!

• If any staff have specific grievances, make sure management is aware of them.

Electricity is the main cause of accidental fires. Most are caused by neglect and misuse of wiring and electrical appliances.

Do you report:

2. Pour copious amounts of cold water over the burn for at least 10 minutes.

• Take up a position which allows a quick and safe retreat, near an exit or up wind of a fire.

Be aware ... in the workplace

– always use ashtrays provided

– the nearest road junction

• General housekeeping

• All visitors and contractors should wear passes. Be known yourself: wear your ID card.

– only smoke in specified areas

– that there is a fire

• Action in the event of fire

– cover structures which might burn with fire-resistant sheets

By following the guidelines, you can greatly reduce the risk of fire by:

SERIOUS BURNS

• DO NOT attempt to extinguish burning gas. Turn off the gas supply and cool the surrounding area with water. • Choose the correct extinguisher:

Checklist Use this checklist to help you assess your awareness of everyday fire safety in the workplace, as well as your knowledge of emergency procedures.

• Turn off any source of heat or fuel; disconnect electrical equipment if it is safe to do so.

Remember: Extinguishers should only be used when dealing with small fires.

– remove any materials within 15 metres which might burn

Follow strict safety measures • Have a fire watcher on site during the work and for 1 hour afterwards. • Make sure that fire extinguishers and/or hose reel are available and ready to use.

– keep flammable liquids under lock and key

• Supervise visitors and contractors – both for security and their own safety.

• A hot-work permit system must be enforced. • Make sure the site is safe before work begins:

– cover gaps and openings in doors and walls

– keep waste safely in metal containers – keep flammable materials well away from outside walls and fences Know your visitors

• If you are allowed to smoke:

Speak clearly and tell them:

Minimise the risks

• CCTV cameras and security lighting are there to keep intruders out. If you notice faults, damage or any obstruction to security equipment, report it immediately.

Turn off the gas.

– it is safe to do so

• Only trained and qualified operators should carry out the work.

Call the emergency services.

Shout ‘Can you hear me?’ and shake the casualty’s shoulders carefully. If there is no response, the casualty is unconscious; follow the ABC of Resuscitation.*

If a burn is larger than a 2 pence piece, if it looks blistered and raw, waxy or charred, it is serious and must be seen by a doctor straight away.

– the alarm has been raised and the fire brigade called – evacuation is under way

Take casualties to safety.

* For detailed guidance, please refer to St. John Ambulance’s The Fast Guide to First Aid, available from the publishers.

Keep calm and reassure the casualty

Before fighting the fire

If you have a workshop, or carry out repairs on the premises, there will be fire hazards from heat-producing equipment such as blow lamps, welding and cutting apparatus, hot air paint strippers, etc.

Lock fire out!

Fire fighting

2. If unconscious, check breathing and pulse and be prepared to resuscitate if necessary.

4. Monitor breathing, pulse and level of response every 10 minutes until ambulance/fire services arrive.

Assess the situation Only approach a casualty if it is safe to do so. Consider possible risks to your own safety from flames, smoke, toxic fumes – especially if you are not wearing protective clothing.

• Make sure that: Keep flammables under lock and key.

– in well-ventilated rooms – special safe containers – the smallest amount needed for the work to be done • Keep well away from possible sources of ignition, including cigarettes.

3. Give oxygen if available and if you have been trained in its use.

IN AN EMERGENCY

You must be trained in basic fire fighting techniques, including the use of fire extinguishers. Only then should you attempt to tackle a fire.

• Keep records of type, amount and location.

ARSON

Keep them out

Providing essential fire safety information suitable for all levels of staff, this checklist advises on the most common workplace fire hazards and what action to take in the event of a fire.

ed

• Keep flammable liquids in a separate purposebuilt store.

Arson is by far the most significant cause of serious fire in industry and commerce – and it is on the increase. Many attacks are mindless and opportunistic, so it is vital to deprive the potential arsonist of both the temptation and opportunity to start a fire.

Injuries sustained in a fire may include burns and breathing problems as a result of smoke or fume inhalation. All of these can be life-threatening and may lead to unconsciousness, and death.

If members of the public have regular access to the premises, it is important that fire drills should also take account of their safety. During a fire drill, some staff may be asked to ‘role play’ members of the public.

Swift – and appropriate – action can put out a fire before serious damage is done.

Store safely ... who start fires deliberately

s no possibility of your smoke or fire

Fires love rubbish!

What to do

First Aid

Regular fire drills enable you to become familiar with the escape procedure and routes to follow in the event of a fire. Your employer should hold fire drills at least twice a year, more often in high rise premises. It is important that disabled staff take part in the drill.
