ourists like clean beaches, clean toilets and coconut trees,” said Somsak Bunyapatipha, the owner of beachfront restaurant Pla Seafood, in Surin. Khun Somsak is unlikely to receive an argument there. “We’ve planted coconut trees here, here and here,” he said, pointing up and down the beach. Unfortunately it was through doing this that an argument did begin and came to a rather confusing and perplexing end last month. When Pla Seafood opened in 2006, Khun Somsak made the decision to build a type of wooden barrier reinforcement around and embedded within a portion of the sand in front of the restaurant to prevent the tide, when rushing back and forth, from eroding and wiping out the sand. It was also done to strengthen the sand underneath, so that in essence, Pla Seafood could provide an unrivalled beachfront dining location. Unrivalled perhaps because partly, and technically, to have tables and chairs or to plant trees on a beach within 50 metres of the shoreline is illegal. “But if everybody adheres to that,” believes K. Somsak, “then Phuket beaches would have nothing. Everybody would have to remove everything! All the houses in Bang Tao for example {are an encroachment on that law). I mean legally you also can’t build anything higher than 80 metres, but that goes on. In Thailand, prostitution goes on, but that’s illegal.” During an average day, the front of Pla Seafood resembles any other portion of Surin beach. But from 4-5 pm onwards, the beachfront restaurant literally lights up. Tables and chairs are brought out, coconut trees are illuminated with wrap-around lights and a mood lighting device is switched on, bathing Pla Seafood’s specific section in romantic greens and purples. Maintaining the facilities comes at a cost and at the times when the sea is at its roughest, there are 15-20 people working on a daily basis repairing and strengthening the wood. By moonlight, the restaurant does look wonderful, and all artificial
add-ons are tasteful and work in harmony with the natural environment. Despite that, it was two months ago that K. Somsak’s worries began. “The Orbortor contacted me and then came down, unfortunately on that day the sea was particularly strong and the wooden sticks were visible. "They told me that it wasn’t legal and that I had two weeks to remove everything; the coconut trees, the wooden sticks in the ground, everything. They even put up a sign in our restaurant that said it wasn’t a legal structure.” Thankfully for Pla Seafood though, K. Somsak had some knowledge of the rather confusing ‘set up’ of Phuket politics and decided to pay a visit to the Amphur. “We went to the Amphur to explain the situation, and the Amphur is above the Orbortor {in the hierarchical political level sense} and they came and said it was okay. So they wrote a letter to the Orbortor to tell them to cancel all their plans.” Now the sign is no more, the deadline for removing everything has passed and K. Somsak hopes that the situation has been resolved for good. Rather poignantly, a day after the removal deadline, Pla Seafood entertained over 300 guests, to prove that the chairs, the lights and indeed coconut trees were not only good for business, but tourism as a whole. K. Somsak said, “Some restaurants are jealous sure, because they don’t have as many customers or the money to do what we do, although there is another beach club that has done a similar thing and built an actual wooden walkway to allow their guests to get closer to the beach.” “But none of these restaurants complained to the Orbortor,” Khun Somsak believes, “I know who it was: a disgruntled ex-employee and friend. We planted the most recent row of coconut trees a few months ago and she took pictures and took them to the Orbortor and at that time, the sand was really washed away, because it was low season. This is when all the problems started.”
K. Somsak and his daughter Pla, employ over 30 members of staff and do much for the local area, so it was with a certain level of surprise and disbelief when he first heard of the Orbortor’s complaints. “The Orbortor wanted us to remove the wood and the trees; they don’t care about the sewerage or anything like that,” said K. Somsak, rather incredulously, “I clean the sewerage, I pay for this stretch of beach to have it removed. I have septic tanks that collect the overspill and I arrange for a truck to come and pick it all up.” He also said that it was quite a regular sight in the area to see his staff collect and dispose of garbage. “Sewerage pumping into the water and excessive garbage, these are problems that will affect tourists, not coconut trees. This is my opinion, maybe I’m wrong…” K Somsak is also unlikely to receive an argument there. Unlikely, but not impossible... It’s been an eventful few weeks for beach-based restaurants in Phuket. Three brothers, who had been operating on Karon beach for 26 years, had their tents and kitchen bulldozed by local authorities because they were deemed to be illegal as they were without legal permits or paperwork to operate there. K. Somsak said that once again it was a question of money and profitability that sealed the brothers’ fate, “Many guests who stay at 5-star resorts near to where the restaurants used to be, liked to eat authentically ‘local’ and ‘authentic’ Thai food when they went out in the evening, and would often go there instead of in their hotels.” There is little doubt that the Phuket beaches are one of the main draws for tourists, and as such any business operating on one is one of the biggest moneyspinning ventures on the island. Their landscapes are rapidly changing, some would argue for the worse and some for the better, but only time will tell as to whether new legislation and a desire to enforce pre-existing laws will have a positive impact on Phuket as a whole.

The world’s largest chocolate bar has beaten the previous record by over a tonne of pure chockage. Weighing 12,000 pounds the bar is 3 feet high and 21 feet long. The ingredients of which are sure to fill up a shopping trolley or two… 1,200 pounds of almonds, 5,500 pounds of sugar, 2,000 pounds of milk powder, 1,700 pounds of cocoa butter and 1,400 pounds of chocolate liquor. Makers of the bar have said that it was originally built to illustrate portion distortion to children to highlight the dangers of not eating healthily. Yeah… right… sure.

Brits of a certain age: Do you remember the cheap, scratchy shiny sheets that used to pass as toilet roll when you were at school? Use of which was sure to create horrific memories-to-come, and memories that The Beatles were unwilling to endure, especially during their recording sessions at Abbey Road. hether as rampaging beasts, maligned creatures or abused animals, Phuket’s elephants have been in the English language press a lot recently. It has long been a shameful and an all-too common image to see an elephant paraded around the streets of Bangkok, much like the gibbons used to be in Phuket. Thankfully though, the image of a roaming and hungry elephant is not a very common one in Phuket. That was until recently. Imagine my surprise when upon taking a stroll around Patong last Thursday night
I chanced upon a baby elephant being led around the Jungceylon area by an employee of Joe Conrad Magic Show… Please see attached pic. This was around 10 pm at night; I’m not sure where he was taking him. I just hope it wasn’t along the dirty and chaotic road of Bangla Road. Yours, Elephant Lover Dear Elephant lover, We have tried to contact Joe Conrad but he has been unavailable for comment…

He was then rather shocked when he saw one particularly slippery and troublesome eel entering his urethra. He tried to pull it out, but it was too late; it had already disappeared into his body. Debate rages on as to whether breastfeeding is healthier than giving a child formula milk. A little lad from Cambodia, despite not being linguistically able to enter the foray just yet, has his own ideas on the matter and after seeing a calf suckling from a cow one day on his farm, started to do the same.

The happiest moment in my life was coming back to Thailand, because the majority of my life was spent living in Milan and Switzerland. What’s been your most romantic day in Phuket? The most romantic day in Phuket is everyday, because there is the sea, beaches, waterfalls, forests, and natural places. It makes me feel all romantic.

iscussions as to when and how to usher in the proposed Phuket minimum wage hikes have come to an end, and the results have been sent to Bangkok. Chief of the Provincial Labour Office, Sutthipong Saisakaret was among the attendees including representatives of employers and employees, and government officials at the numerous meetings held last month. Phuket and Bangkok are two of the seven areas that will benefit from the miminum rate of 300 baht per day, when the raise is brought in on January 1, 2012. The wage rise will be brought in throughout the rest of the country a year
later on January 1, 2013. Khun Sitthipong said that he believed the rise would have a knock-on effect on the standard cost of Phuket living. He said that as Phuket labour costs accounted for more than 15% of the cost of doing business, he estimated that the rise in other business costs would rise by about 6% as well. K. Sitthipong also revealed that the government planned to reduce corporate income tax from 30% to 23% to counteract this Despite all the Labour Union representatives being in favour of the hike, the final decision rests with the Central Wage Committee in Bangkok.

Question and answer with the American Ambassador
There are approximately 20,000 to 30,000 U.S. citizens living in Thailand and about 500,000 that visit every year. The Post spoke with the woman responsible for representing them, Ambassador Kristie Kenney, to talk about beaches, Thai friendliness and tuk tuks You served as the first female Ambassador to the Philippines from 2006-2010. What do you see as the main differences/similarities between working there and in Thailand? I would have to say one similarity shared by the Philippines and Thailand is the friendliness and openness of the people. Even though I have not lived in the Philippines in nearly two years, the good friendships I made while I was there remain stronger than ever. In Thailand, I am also continually impressed by the friendliness of the Thai people and I look forward to many more lasting friendships. The biggest difference for me is language. In the Philippines, I tried my hand at some of the local languages, but for the most part I spoke English – which is an official language there. Although I study the Thai language, my ability to speak it is limited. The good news is that I love studying Thai and will keep at it!
All of this information is available at http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/. Last month at the most recent TriMonthly Hon Con meeting, the Austrian Ambassador pledged to issue travel warnings on its embassy's website if the assaults, intimidation and overcharging of the tuk tuks continue. Would this be something you would also consider doing? We already have several warnings regarding issues Americans should be aware of when they’re traveling in Thailand, including one about overcharging, in our Country Specific Information Sheet on Thailand, also available on our website. The sheet provides information like the location of the U.S. embassy and any consular offices; whether you need a visa; crime and security information; health and medical conditions; and drug penalties. Are you pleased and satisfied that the situation of the Deep Sea Port blockade has been resolved? I am pleased that the situation has been resolved. Phuket is a popular port-of-call for our sailors and they very much look forward to their visits.
Is there a difference in the average request submitted from American citizens in the Philippines and Thailand? What was and is the most common advice/form of assistance you offer to U.S citizens? Our American Citizen Services Units provides a range of services and information to Americans who are overseas, from renewing passports and issuing Consular Reports of Birth to travel advice and absentee voting services. I would say one major difference between Thailand and the Philippines is the size of the American communities. In the Philippines, we receive more requests for services because the number of Americans residing there is so much higher. You were in Phuket earlier this month, was this your first visit? What were your initial impressions of the island? Yes, my 9 September trip to Phuket was my first official visit to the island. I was very impressed. I saw firsthand that Phuket’s economy goes far beyond resort hotels and amazing seafood restaurants. On this trip, I saw the diversity of Phuket’s business scene, including some exciting American-owned ventures, and had the opportunity to meet with students of all ages. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to experience the beaches. I look forward to returning so I can explore all that Phuket has to offer. How did your meetings go with the Phuket authorities? Did your agenda prove effective? I consider my visit to Phuket a great success. My visit mainly focused on education, American business development, and the welfare of Americans visiting and
living in the area. I enjoyed talking with students from the Phuket International Academy Day School, learning more about Phuket’s software development industry, and playing Frisbee with the children at the Holland House Orphanage. I also had the opportunity to visit Phuket’s chief of police and talk to him about some of the issues that American citizens have raised with me. And at the end of the day, I enjoyed learning more about the newly formed Phuket chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, which includes property developers, educators, lawyers, and those working in media and tourism. From your understanding what are the major problems facing U.S citizens resident or visiting Phuket? One of the Embassy’s top priorities is the safety and security of American
citizens abroad. Phuket is a popular destination for American tourists and we have a large number of Americans residing there. Like every resort town, there are things that can be improved. I would have to say one of the biggest complaints from U.S. citizens in Phuket are the scams involving the rental of motorbikes and Jet Skis, as well as problems with taxi drivers and tuk-tuks. What is your impression of the 'problems' surrounding jet skis and tuk tuks on the island? I believe these scams affect both tourists and Thai citizens alike and hope that the issues can be resolved. It is our duty to inform American citizens about possible risks abroad and I encourage Americans to register with the Embassy to receive the latest updates on travel tips and concerns for the region.
Do you have any plans to attend the next Hon Con meeting and perhaps become more pro-active in diplomatic relations in Phuket. Or are there any plans to introduce an American Hon Con? Phuket is a very important piece of the Embassy’s mission in Thailand. Phuket is home to many American citizens, a popular destination for American tourists, and a growing place for American businesses. I very much enjoyed my visit and plan to come again soon! At this time, we don’t have any plans to introduce an Honorary Consul in Phuket. In fact, the United States does not have any Honorary Consuls anywhere in the world. But we are always looking for ways to increase our engagement wherever American citizens are living or visiting. The new US Consul General Elisabeth Pratt also visited Phuket this month. It seems that the US involvement in Phuket is increasing. While few doubt that this is a good thing, is there a reason why? Phuket has always been a priority for the U.S. Embassy. The Embassy makes regular consular outreach trips to Phuket, with the next one coming up on December 1, to provide services to American citizens living in Phuket. The previous Consul General visited Phuket often and there were more than a dozen other visits by consular officers last year alone.

A tailor-made future for Phuket’s Nepalese
Bu Jody Houton
Sometimes being the President of the Thai Nepalese Association is hard, but Phanuphong ‘Daniel’ Limbuprasertkul still finds time to smile
S
itting in the shade of a Nepalese tree, Phanuphong ‘Daniel’ Limbuprasertkul, the President of the Thai Nepalese Association (TNA) chats to fellow members at the community’s temple, in the Nepalese language interspersed with the odd Thai phrase. Like the majority of the 3,000 Nepalese in Phuket, some have made the long journey directly from the hills of Nepal to the beaches of Phuket, others are Myanmar-born, while many, like Daniel, were born in Thailand. “Though I have been born in Thailand,” begins Daniel, “My blood is Nepalese. I love to say that… Even 3rd generation Nepalese born in Burma feel Nepalese. This is partly because the Burmese government do not recognise them as Burmese citizens.” “I suppose I’m 3rd generation Nepalese,” Daniel continues, his story echoing with similarities of many of the Thai-Nepalese in Phuket. “When Nepal gained independence from Britain after WW2, my grandfather – who was a
Gurkha –moved to Myanmar in Burma because it was very close and there was lots more opportunities there. Nepal is just mountains,” said Daniel with a smile, “but very beautiful.” His grandfather eventually made it to Thailand to the Kanchanburi province, which was a common migration destination for the Nepalese. Daniel was also born there, staying until he was 11 years old. The Limbuprasertkuls then made their third move in as many generations and came to Bangkok, primarily for education purposes. Daniel arrived in Phuket as a young man with a high school education and little else, and did what many of his fellow brothers and sisters did and opened up a tailor shop. In fact the majority of the men sat around the table are tailors, except for one, who has a shop in Phuket town, selling Nepalese goods. Around the TNA’s grounds, which are situated down a side soi on Patong Hill, there are many posters of the King and Queen of Thailand. When Daniel speaks of the monarchy and
the Kingdom, his love clearly shines through, but it is the love for his grandfather’s native land that prompted him to found the TNA, over six years ago. “We {TNA} wanted to get all the Nepalese together. We want to preserve our culture and our language; our very way of life.” Although the TNA has been together for about six years, the Thai government finally recognized them as such, just two years ago. “We are kind of like an NGO,” said Daniel, “We only currently have about 40 official members many of which have just arrived from Nepal or Burma - but we estimate there are around 3,000 Nepalese living and working in Phuket, most of whom know of our existence.” The Association, which is made up of senior members of the Nepalese community, is set up much like any other democratic group, with selected members, acting as presidents of certain sections and fulfilling prescribed roles. There are therefore leaders responsible for arranging activities and overseeing the duties of:
1.Female members 2.Providing help 3.Sport 4.Education 5.Music/culture 6.Youth 7.Temple 8.Society/community As well as organising Nepalese festivals and teaching children the Nepalese language during the summer, the TNA’s main aims and role is to provide help, assistance and advice to those living and working in Phuket. “Although we sometimes receive complaints, we don’t get involved in ‘illegal’ matters such as complaints concerning ‘alleged’ protection money from pirate DVD sellers. We just advise new arrivals of how they should be acting.” Daniel said that his role often, like Honorary Consuls’, involved ensuring workers had and were aware that they needed to have up-to-date passports and work permits. He said, “We can help them but not force them into getting correct documentation, but even
if they didn’t, we would still help them if they were in ‘trouble’.” Daniel referenced a case that occurred last month, where a young Nepalese man who had died didn’t have any family in Phuket to take care of proceedings; the TNA was informed and they then arranged and paid for the funeral. Although the TNA and Daniel’s role fulfills many of the duties that an Embassy or Consulate is expected to perform, the Association does not have the same legal power or entitlements, at least according to the Thai government, so it is with strength through numbers as opposed through legislation and legal standing that Daniel wishes the Nepalese community to find its foothold and voice in Phuket. “Of course we want our society to grow in numbers so that we are more powerful,” he said. Perhaps then they, as a people, will be better represented and be afforded the same right to reply and lodge complaints that other foreign communities have in Phuket.
Sitting under the shade of a Nepalese tree
“We would really like to attend the next Hon Con meeting, but that depends on the Nepalese and Thai government. I talk with Naveen Prakash Jung Shah, the Ambassador of Nepal frequently and I think he would think that is a good idea.” “Even if he doesn’t, I most certainly do and I will try to make that so… We are currently a very small voice in Phuket but we do deserve to be much bigger.” A voice that Daniel admits that no matter how hard they collectively shout, they sometimes find it hard to be heard. The TNA was recently instrumental in the capture of alleged rapist, Thai citizen Phakpoom Maneerat. Khun Phakpoom was arrested earlier in May following information submitted by the TNA, when a number of Nepalese women came forward and identified K. Phakpoom as the chief suspect. Various emotions are visibly at play when Daniel recounts what happened. “This kind of thing has unfortunately happened before, but nothing happened back then because there’s a sense of shame,

on the woman’s part, within the community when a woman is raped. “But with this particular case, the girl came to the Association to tell us what he did. She said she was walking back to her home on Nan Nai road one night and was stopped by a man in a car who said he was a police officer and asked to see her work documents. "She showed them to him, but even though they were all in order, he said they were incomplete and took her away in his car.” Apparently the man took her to Krabi for 4-5 days, to where she was subjected to a horrendous ordeal and when they returned, he dropped her off near to the Patong police station. “The girl was smart though,” said Daniel, “She followed him and noted that he had gone into 7/11. She then went home to her boyfriend, who then in turn came to me. I went to the police station and told Commander Pekad about this and told him to look at the 7/11 CCTV footage to get the guy.” After Khun Phakpoom was caught, six different Nepalese
Daniel, like many Thai-Nepalese still follow Nepalese traditions
girls came forward to make similar statements and also identified him. Although he apparently confessed to the numerous alleged rapes he spent just 5 weeks in jail, and was released on June 21. He was charged with impersonating a police officer but not for any of the alleged rapes. Daniel along with other members of the TNA are incredulous, he becomes more animated when he tells the Post, “I don’t know how this can happen, If it was a Thai girl, he would be spending 20 years in jail right now.” Then, like a switch, Daniel becomes calmer and seems more resigned to the situation, “But this case is really a rule and regulation of the Thai government. We would like to do more, but we are just a small association, but will have a meeting again after the Vegetarian Festival.” It is for instances like these that Daniel yearns to be invited to attend the tri-monthly Hon Con meeting and hopes that one day it will become a reality. Eager to not be misunderstood, Daniel attempts to explain his feelings, and in a way manages to sum up the very es-
sence of the problem of wanting to be and recognised as part of a separate community, yet denied the rights of a country that one is within. “You know… I am not really 2/3rd generation Nepalese; I am really Thai. I love this country and the King. We are proud to live here in this beautiful place. “I was born in Thailand and I’ve been in Phuket for more than 25 years, so I am very much a Phuket person now. We help Thailand and its people, for example we have helped many victims of the recent floods by donating 100,000 baht to Governor Tri himself just a few weeks ago.” Despite not being invited to attend Hon Con meetings, and a sense that community relations could be stronger, Daniel believes that things for them are vastly improved to how they were for their forefathers in Nepal. “It is much better now than they were say 60 years ago when my family first moved to Thailand. Thailand is definitely becoming more democratic.” Daniel added that it was also a
matter of perception, “We Nepalese, at least the 2nd/3rd/4th generations of us, have many more options now because we are more educated and actually aware of how little our ancestors had.” He added that for his own children and future generations of Thai-born Nepalese, the options were thankfully limitless. He has a 16-year-old daughter who wants to be a lawyer, and a son who is interested in joining the army. “We want our children to be good people,” said Daniel, “They have the opportunity to get good education, not like us {his generation}, so they can do anything… not just be tailors,” laughs Daniel. With huge numbers of ThaiNepalese professionals just a generation away, the future of Thailand and of the Thai-Nepalese community looks strong. For just like the Nepalese seeds that were planted to grow the tree at the TNA’s grounds, its roots are strong and because they have been well preserved, they are sure to provide shade and comfort for many successive generations to come.

EXPATS' LAPTOPS No, not the kind that get exposure on Soi Bangla. Several times a month, people ask me which laptop PC to buy. The answer isn't what you'd expect. It's allll about the repairs. AFTER-SALES WARRANTY REPAIR: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. There are only two brands of laptop PC which are repaired right here in Phuket. All the rest are sent up to Bangkok to be ignored for weeks, or worse, sent overseas. Those brands are Acer and Toshiba. Both their warranty repair shops are on Phang Na road in Phuket town, near the old bus station, the Shell station, the Royal Phuket City Hotel, and the place you pay your electric bill. These shops don't necessarily repair models which aren't sold in Thailand, so consider this if you're planning to buy your PC overseas. If your keyboard is a deciding factor, consider getting your PC in Thailand and spending an extra 1500 baht for the right keyboard from an eBay keyboard shop, or spending 150 baht for keyboard stickers on Amazon.com. See my most recent two articles for details. Both the Acer and the Toshiba shops are surprisingly understanding and competent. I have firsthand experience in both. The Acer shop can sometimes require a little pushing to do a warranty repair for free, yet other times are surprisingly willing to do a warranty repair. The Toshiba shop contains a couple of the best technicians in the employ of X-Net's Khun Sataporn, a kind, smart, English speaking Thai who owns X-Net, Toshiba, and Dell shops on Phang Na road and used to own Class XX next to Powerbuy in Central Festival, Kathu. The taller of the two is the best Thai PC tech I know in Phuket. You may remember him as the tallest person in Class XX, and very possibly the tallest Thai person you've ever seen. I hesitate to tell you these technicians' names, for fear that you'll ask for them by name. One is named “Rong”, and the other “Kittiporn”. The only thing worse than shouting “Rong
...Rong ...Rong!” in a Thai computer store might be asking for anything that sounds like “Kiddie porn”. Gourd help you. You may have trouble spelunking and mountainclimbing around their accents in English, so bring a translator or a big load of patience and humility. You will be in the presence of greatness. Try not to giggle at their names. If I can be tempted away from the warranty shop's presence in Phuket being the all-important factor, there is this to consider: IT City has for a long time offered new laptop PCs with an extended and expanded warranty of amazing proportions, for an additional 1,000 baht. I have no feedback on whether they honor that warranty or not, but ohmygourd it sounds wonderful in theory. Most warranties cover only the manufacturer's responsibility that he's made a working, reliable PC. IT City's extended and expanded warranty appears to be “no blame” coverage: your warranty appears to cover theft, water damage, electrical storm damage, pushedit-off-the-table-while-reaching-for-a-beer damage, and the all-important drownedit-in-beer-while-putting-the-bottle-back damage. (Don't laugh. Drink damage accounts for 4 of the laptop funerals I attended last year.) It seems too good to be true. Maybe it is. NO POWER WINDOWS Ever buy a new car? The car's base price is very low, but doesn't include optional extras like power windows and power steering. Those optional extras cost a fortune,. They're a moneymaking scam because you can get them far cheaper if you buy them separately. Computers work similarily. For example, a PC may cost 15000 baht for a model with 1 gigabyte of DDR3 RAM (that's computer memory) but 17000 baht for the same PC with 2gb. You can buy a 4gb stick of RAM elsewhere for less than 1000 baht! You can install the replacement or upgrade yourself with a small screwdriver, or let the shop staff do it, or bring it to Woody's free Sunday morning computer club (www.Woody. info) where half a dozen people will offer to help. A hard disk replacement or upgrade
goes along similar lines, though the price differences aren't as dramatic. Still, shop elsewhere for those optional extras and upgrades. Also, you can easily copy the entire contents of your hard drive from one hard disk to another by simply bringing in both drives to Banana IT (in HomePro of Chalong, if nowhere else) and paying tip money for the transfer. Do that, and you've now also got an intact spare hard drive with the original software on it. Preeeeetty coooool! WHERE IS “ELSEWHERE”? There are fairly good deals around the island in all the Banana IT stores, and in the computer shop congregations in the basement of Big C of Kathu and in Computer Road (Phang Na Road between X-Net and the Shell gas station in Phuket Town). The very best prices, though, are around the corner from that Shell gas station. If you stray off Phang Na road by turning left off Phang Na Road at the gas station, the very next shop you see is “Advice”. Advice is the middleman for many important brands, reselling manufacturer's stuff to the smaller shops in Phuket, so their prices are extra low. However, that also means they expect to save money by dealing with nerds who already know what they're doing, not beginners who need some hand-holding. So... do your homework, or bring a friendly nerd from Woody's Sunday morning club. JIB on Computer Road is also known for its low PC part prices. REVIVE AN OLD PC The best laptop for the money you've got... might be the laptop you've got. You might get a simple electrical repair done by the folks at Amorn (basement of Big C, the far side from the food court). These people have great skills, and charge based on the worth of the item they're repairing. Keep that in mind: brain surgery on a cheapo TV will be cheap, but easy fixes to an expensive TV are pricey. Also, maybe your PC just needs a bigger hard disk - easy to buy and install. Or you need more RAM but the stores don't want to sell the old style RAM at
a reasonable price? Come to Woody's computer club and ask about our R.U.S.T. bucket, the “R-AM U-pgrade S-ervice of T-hailand”. It's a free give-if-you-can, take-if-you-need collection of old laptop and desktop RAM. JOIN THE CLUB Lastly, join the club. Seriously, the questions of which model is best, is your PC broken, and how to do what you want and need to do on your PC, are questions that change three times a day. Phuket has a nearly unique free computer users' club that can take you from computer user “zero” to “hero”. You'd be silly not to take advantage of that. Sunday mornings at Woody's Sandwich Shoppes: Be there!

Online Data is Mission Critical By Masaya Mikami
W
e are living in an age when data sent from your computer reaches its destination anywhere in the world within less than a second. Of course, depending of file size you are transferring and the network environment, it may take slightly longer but infrastructure (fiber optic) is being developed so that signals are travelling at the speed of light. Network configurations allow us to store our data files anywhere in the world and use it whenever or wherever we want
- either on our PC at home, mobile device or private yacht on a holiday island. Everyday, we live our life surrounded by information (data). How we obtain information may vary according to the medium, as will the speed of getting the information. Most mediums empowered by information technology nowadays use some form of cloud computing service to publish information as quickly as possible. A Cloud computing service provides immediate activation of your data storage
whenever you want it for any length of period and power you need to have. Many business employers add cloudcomputing services as value-added extra to their core business. It is often utilised to be used as a marketing tool such as iCloud service from Apple, which allows you to save your iPhone data backup, and everything you have purchased through Apple’s App store. iCloud provides convenience to users, however, it doesn’t actually produce any extra financial value as it is used to promote other profitable services Apple is providing. Many other service providers around the world have various platforms to store your data online. Online business applications used to run your business operation is another tool in which to store your valuable data and make the data accessible from anywhere. Most online business applications are empowered with online storage and tools to store your data required for your business operation beside the particular business tools you subscribe to. Mobile applications that make accessing stored data easy is often provided in such services so that you can operate your business everywhere you go. Even core business operations such as accounting can be conducted online by using online
applications like Quickbook. This means you can hire any book keeper anywhere and manage his/her works online even at the same time your bookkeeper is working on your bookkeeping. If your business heavily depends on the online world, it is important to select a data centre which can provide reliability and quality (service and speed). Data center/web site hosting services are available over the world, however most providers lack quality of services and reliability. It is a critical choice for online business owners to have the best data center possible by analyzing service and network details before actually purchasing their services. To have a convenient digital life, it is important to be aware of its benefits, service limitation, and security. Benefits are widely advertised therefore, it is easy to know what online services you are subscribing to are offering. What you really need to look into are the details regarding service limitation and security. These are matters mentioned only in the agreement and it is an important measurement to make, especially for services you are using for critical assignment. You need to read the agreement carefully and understand what limitations you may have and how tight your information security is.

Do You Have Parasites?
P Richard Patrick Cracknell, N.D., PhD is a traditional naturopath, and as such, is not a medical doctor and does not diagnose, prescribe, or treat disease or illness, but treats the “human triad” - body, mind and spirit with nutrition, supplements and natural therapies. The views expressed by Richard Cracknell, in no way reflect those of the Post. His beliefs and advice should be referred to as an alternative and not as a replacement to any treatment you are currently receiving for an existing ailment.
arasite is a term that relates to any living thing that lives on or in another living organism. Parasites are tiny organisms that invade the body through oral ingestion or skin contact. They do not just live in the intestines, but also in the blood, heart, liver, eyes, brain, etc. There are more than 300 kinds of parasites that can live in the human body and because they steal our nutrients, vitamins and amino acids, the symptoms of having parasites are endless. Most parasites interfere with bodily functions, cause inflammation; destroy the host's tissues and release toxins into the blood. Parasites fall into two general categories: Big ones referred to as worms and small ones that require a microscope to see. Parasitic worms, in their immature form travel through your blood and infect any organ, gland or part of the body. Depending on the type of worm, they can grow anywhere from several inches up
to many feet in length. Worms can lay up to millions of eggs per day. The eggs stick to the walls of our intestines and are microscopic in size. These large worms are called HEMINTHINS or INTESTINAL NEMATODES. The fish tapeworm is the largest of the human tapeworms and can reach up to 33 feet in length or more (remember: inside of you). Beef and pork also have tapeworms. The small parasites travel through your blood stream like bacteria or virus. They reproduce by dividing themselves much like bacteria do. They can invade any cell in the body; the small ones are called PROTOZOA. Worms of various kinds can
personally tailored to suit your requirements. With an emphasis on healthy living, following a ‘normal’ diet and enjoyable exercise, clients can expect to go back to basics losing weight the old fashioned way without the need for any fads or extreme measures. Garry and Jackie were both overweight and obese most of their lives and had tried pretty much every diet that had appeared on the market. Even if they lost weight, it always man-
aged to pile back on, often leaving them heavier than when they first started. They finally found a simple solution to losing weight which brought them health and happiness. Together they achieved their fantastic result in less than five months and, more importantly, discovered how to maintain their weight loss. They are hoping to inspire legions who wish to do the same. enter the body through several avenues and if conditions are favorable for their development they multiply. If this is not kept in check by your body's own immune system, the infestation becomes a burden on the body and a health challenge. Intestinal parasites are due to insufficient or negligent hygiene, poorly washed foods or polluted water. These undesirable invaders take nutrients from the body and excrete toxins, irritating and injuring the host. An example of maladies that can be linked with parasite infestation: •Allergies •Arthritis •Asthma •Nerve disorders Mild parasite infections can be completely without symptoms, which do not make them less hazardous. A mild feeling of discontent, digestive problems, colic, irritable, fatigue, and generalized or localized pruritus (itchiness) could be symptoms of mild parasitic infestation.
Heavy infestations can cause symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Avoid becoming infected and strengthening the body’s immune system to resist infestation. Worms thrive in acidic and constipation conditions. A diet high in fiber and alkalizing food (raw, vegan food) is the best prevention and cure for infestations. 85 – 95% of adults have parasites in them and suffer from any of the symptoms as fatigue, low energy levels, skin problems, hives, and loss of appetite, bloating, snoring, allergies, anxiety, restlessness, and more. Many parasite-based health issues are mis-diagnosed by doctors, simply because the symptoms are similar to those of more familiar diseases. Wellness House in Nai Harn Beach, Phuket is the only detox facility in Asia that offers a oneday parasite cleanse. For more information, call: 080 530 9555 or visit: www.wellnesshouse.asia

TRAINING WITH
Simple Truths
A
t work we do what needs to be done to achieve the goal. We will work late, come in early just to make sure the job gets finished on time. Basically we are goal-driven. However, this is not always the case in our exercise and training and our health, fitness and wellness goals. We often want to become fitter but when it comes to increasing our heart rate for an extended period or sometimes even for a short period of time, but it hurts, so we slow down or even stop. We often want to increase our flexibility but do we spend time stretching our muscles at the end of our workout or even take a stretching class? Just like projects at work, it takes time to achieve what we want. There has to be a plan and we have to break it down into small achievable goals, but essentially if we don’t do what needs to be done...we won’t achieve our goal. SIMPLE! So in this edition, we are going to break
it down and spell out some simple truths, that we all know, but don’t always adhere to: •If you don’t do weight training, you will lose muscle and your metabolism will decrease causing you to store abdominal fat easier. Remember you cannot tone fat! •If you don’t do weight training, you cannot get stronger, you cannot maintain your current lean muscle tissue and your metabolism will decrease. •If you don’t do some form of abdominal / oblique and lower back training such as Pilates, Body Balance, Yoga or some other form of core conditioning, you cannot get a lean strong core. •If you don’t train your heart to be strong and healthy then it wont be. There is no such thing as a sudden heart
BODY TALK By Garnett Symonds
Sex and the older man
It’s a fact, senior sex is not the same as it was when you were 20 years old – but it can still be satisfying. Sexual interest is not just for the young. Many older people continue to enjoy their sexuality into their 80s and even beyond. A healthy sex life is not only fulfilling, but is also good for your general physical health and self-esteem. So, what exactly changes as man becomes older? As men age, testosterone levels decline and changes in sexual function become more evident. Other physiological changes also include the need for extra stimulation in order to achieve and maintain an erection and orgasm. Orgasms will become shorter, ejaculations less forceful and reduced semen output. You will also notice that you require more recovery time to achieve another erection after ejaculation. Try not to feel anxious about these changes. It is not the end of your sex life. Adapt to your changing body and accept the changes it brings. Health also plays a big part in your sex life and sexual performance. A chronic health condition, such as heart conditions or arthritis will affect intimacy. Certain surgeries and many medications, such as blood pressure medications, antihistamines, antidepressants and acid-blocking drugs, can
4
also affect sexual function. Emotional problems can also affect sexuality. Depression will certainly have a negative effect on your desire and interest in sex. Many older couples report a better sex life because they have fewer distractions, more time and privacy, and no worries about pregnancy. Many men aged between 40-70 yrs old, have trouble achieving or sustaining an erection. This means difficulty in achieving orgasm and problems with ejaculation. History has led us to believe that it was only women who had problems with orgasm, but studies show that orgasmic dysfunction is also prevalent among men. Sexual satisfaction is known to be linked to orgasm, which in turn affects emotional intimacy and relationship satisfaction. Men over the age of 50 can be great lovers for three basic reasons. Primarily, they are not in a hurry. Secondly, they put their partners needs first. Thirdly, they have learned that great sex doesn’t have to include intercourse – that’s only one option. attack; it takes years of abuse and lack of training to get you there! •If you don’t eat enough protein and ‘time it’ so that you maximize your muscles’ recovery process, you cannot grow lean muscle tissue and become bigger, stronger and essentially leaner. •If you do not eat enough carbohydrate, you cannot fuel your workouts. Most workouts that we do, such as weight training, Body Pump or RPM rely purely on carbohydrate as a source of fuel. Restrict this substrate (or food group) and your energy and workouts will suffer and 20 minutes into the session you will be looking for the exit. •If you eat too much saturated fat (think cakes, biscuits, ice-cream and chocolate), or whatever source that comes in, and
13 drink too much alcohol, no amount of training will save you and you will become fatter, and potentially over time become insulin resistant which can lead to Adult Onset Diabtes (Type II). •Diabetes and CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) can be reversed. •Exercise is the one addiction where there is no downside! •If your heart rate is climbing as you exercise that’s a good thing! •It’s in those last few reps that results are created. •.... And it is in those beats per minute where we can barely hang on where our Inner Strength is found! The heart is a muscle.... work it! •That which does not kill us... only makes us stronger. •You cannot swim to your ship, and keep one foot on the shore. So, just like the plot to a good love story or horror movie, the formula for success in relation to your health and fitness has not changed in the last 20 years and neither has the formula for failure. If you want to fail at your attempt to become healthy, lean, fit, strong, get CHD (Coronary heart Disease) and Adult Onset Diabetes (Type II) then its easy: just don’t do any of the above! However if you want to succeed, it’s easy. Take control of your destiny, your health and your fitness, stop making excuses of why you cant, say C.A.N.I (Constant And Never ending Improvement). Health Fitness and Wellness... It's a mindset!

The serene and spectacular Baba Nest is far Baan Rim Pa from 2nd Best
B
aan Rim Pa has been operating for more than twenty years and as such is one of the most well-known and acclaimed restaurants on the island. It is often decorated by and awarded by such gastronomic governing bodies as the Miele Guide and the Wine Spectator Award. Perfectly situated on the outerrim of Patong and at the very beginning of Kalim’s millionaire’s mile, the views of the crashing waves against the cliff cove are spectacular and quietly serene. Yet it was one that Sue Ultmann, the Director of Communications, admits was a concern when owner Tom McNamara first decided to open a restaurant there. “When he decided to change his house into a restaurant, his friends were sceptical, they said, “It’s too far out of Patong, nobody will come.” But as the often-misquoted line from ‘Field of Dreams’ would seem to testify, they will. You need onlly build it. The popularity led to Da Maurizo – an Italian restaurant – and later Joe’s – serving snacks, cocktails and New World cuisine (including apparently the world’s best hamburger) - being built, alongside the same cliff face. Now all three, although connected via external stairs, operate independently and offer a completely distinctive dining experience. Baan Rim Pa remains the most popular and on the majority of nights operates at full capacity.
And it’s easy to tell why; the former two-story teak house is tastefully designed with deeprich wood and subtle colours that perfectly complement the elegant and natural setting. Both levels of Baan Rim Pa are open air, which allows truly natural panoramic views and a gentle sea breeze, to keep diners cool. The menu features Baan Rim Pa's "Royal Thai Cuisine" and as such, by definition, they were once dishes formerly found only in the Grand Palace of Thailand. A wide variety of appetizers and starters include the fabulous Fresh Spring Rolls (Po Pia Sod) (295 baht) and a personal favourite: the wonderfully indulgent Deep Fried Rice Cake with Peanut Sauce Topping (Khowtaang Nataang) (275 baht). As well as countless traditional soups and salads, there is also a large selection of mains, of which curries make up a large proportion. The delicious Paneang Ped must be tried to be believed. Duck with a thick and creamy curry sauce which is served with slices of lychee to be eaten simultaneously with the marinated meat. Also on offer is the scrumptious soft-shelled crab with servings of wok-fried vegetables in a chilli jam. There are elements of Baan Rim Pa’s dining experience that is well known among its diners; the daily-made ice sculpture at the front of the restaurant is one of them and the pianist is another. Softly played background music can be heard most nights
provided by Tommy Doyle, who besides being a regular fixture at Baan Rim Pa for many years has, during his time, entertained various U.S presidents. Baan Rim Pa also prides itself on its extensive wine cellar and its staff’s knowledge of the wine. Mrs Ultmann said, "Every week whichever member of staff is interested can take wine tasting and appreciation lessons. We currently have three really good wine girls at the moment.” The wine cellar has been the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence each year since 2002. So, despite the initial concerns over the ‘far out’ location of the restaurant, Baan Rim Pa has remained consistently strong and loved by locals, expats and travellers since opening. It could even be argued that opening such an acclaimed restaurant in such a spot, allowed other restaurants along which is now known as Millionaire’s Mile, to open up and flourish. Some of which are still answering hesitancies about their location being too far out of Patong, but Mrs Ultmann believes that what with new development occurring in the area and a wideselection of already existing restaurants, it is just a matter of time before the area of Kalim becomes vibrant. Whether that takes another 21 years we will just have to wait and see, but what is a pretty safe bet is that Baan Rim Pa will still be there, still entertaining guests and still providing a truly wonderful experience.
B
aba Nest was recently awarded the world’s 2nd best beach bar by CNNgo.com. The Post went to have a daiquiri, watch the sunset and speak to Jared O'Brien who has been the Food & Beverage Manager who has overlooked everything related to Baba Nest and Baba Pool Club since Sri Panwa first opened six years ago. Here is what he had to say: “Baba Nest is located on the southern most tip of Phuket Island at Sri Panwa, giving it a very auspicious home. The term Baba Nest was intended to acknowledge the venue as one of the highest dining/chill out spots in Phuket, overlooking majestic views of the peninsula. We wanted a simple, homely name that made people feel at home and relaxed. It has been seasonally open since last year Christmas and additionally opened for exclusive private parties and events. Baba Nest has two very distinct atmospheres. The dining room is a white washed teak with rocking chairs surrounding large picnic style tables. The dining area is flanked by open terraces with incredible sea views and
luxurious comfy sofas. When you head upstairs to the 'Nest' level, it’s basically 340 degrees of ocean, island, sunrise and sunset views with a cool breeze all year round. A wrap-around swimming pool and large wooden deck is host to beanbag seating and circular Chinese style tables for quick bites and cocktails. Although Baba Nest is not officially 'on' a beach, it looks out to over a dozen beaches on the surrounding islands and Phuket mainland. So in a sense we sacrificed the beach front location for a venue with the most stunning views one can find on Phuket and it was all worth it in the end - nothing else compares to the experience of sitting 60 metres above sea level with a cocktail in hand, overlooking the most stunning sunsets and watching luxury yachts sail by. There is a great emphasis placed on the outdoors hence why we decided to keep it a very simple interior design and layout. Sri Panwa residents, hotel guests and Phuket regulars are who we see most often enjoying the view. Private events have become a monthly occurrence for weddings, celebrations and birthdays.

Vintage style furniture fits Phuket
J
S – short for Jaspal – is a retailer for classic American and European furniture brands like Bassett, Actona and Bramble and is in Phuket for one month only. The fashionable company has set up ‘stall’ at the huge side-showroom of Hafele and according to Sales Manager Cholwasa ‘Earn’ Bangyekan, JS might soon be as recognisable in Phuket as it is in Bangkok. “Our flagship store is at the Crystal Design Center in Bangkok, but depending how our month goes in Phuket, we might soon be opening a store here,” Khun Earn said. There is absolutely no reason why this might not be very probable in the future and their Vintage, Tuscan and Classic American style is sure to prove popular,
especially considering that until the end of the month, most of the furniture is on sale for between 50-60% off. “We have come here to survey the market,” said K. Earn, “I think the Vintage/ contemporary style will very much suit the Phuket condominium style. It’s high-end style is perfect for small spaces.” There is a wide variety of furniture currently available at the store, Neo Classic chairs and sofas, vintage style lampshades and accessories and even many beautiful and modern style of outdoor furniture fittings. For the finest imported furniture, sofas, lightings and accessories from U.S and Denmark, why not pop down to Hafele Design Centre to the JS collection. Open from 10am to 8pm every night until October 31.
