Letter from the Executive Director Friends of The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield,
Brent Schneider Executive Director The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield
The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield celebrated another successful year in 2012. It is with excitement that I share with you the many accomplishments that our chapter has achieved through our programs, schools, and team members, all of which are wholeheartedly committed to the mission and focus of The First Tee. Utilizing the game of golf as our platform, The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield continues to be an effective youth development program that teaches core values and life skills resulting in positive developmental outcomes in young people. Last year, as a supplement to our core values and life skills, The First Tee introduced The Nine Healthy Habits, which promote healthy and active lifestyles for young people. Our hope is that we can reach young people at an early age in order to establish these habits early in life. The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield reached over 12,000 young people in 2012. We expanded the National School Program to 20 elementary schools, increased the number of participants at our two facilities, served the children of military personnel at Fort Lee, and partnered with youth development organizations across Central Virginia. With your support, we will continue to expand our reach and positively impact the lives of more young people. I invite you to read this Annual Review, which is a testament to the commitment and achievements of The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield Sincerely,
Brent Schneider Executive Director

“Throughout my career, I have seen many youth programs at facilities where I have worked. I have never seen kids have so much fun as they do at [The First Tee] facility and in my son’s case have so much of a positive learning impact on the individual.” Billy, parent of participant and golf course superintendent for 15 years

Impact The First Tee is more than golf. In a country where one-third of young people say they lack adult role models, places where they feel safe, and quality education, The First Tee is filling those voids through three main programming areas.
1
Certification Programs In 2012, nearly 1,000 young people participated in certification programs at The First Tee Richmond and The First Tee Chesterfield.
“Our children have truly enjoyed their First Tee experience… as parents… we most appreciate the values which undergird each and every interaction of our children with this program.” Hannah and Isaac, parents of three participants
The First Tee’s programs are available to all young people regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
“Brendan is a freshman at John Marshall and lives close to the Richmond facility. Last quarter he had an ‘F’ on his report card. Last week he showedup in the off-season to share his most recent report card with me. He couldn’t wait to show me that he had two A’s this quarter and will be trying out for the golf team.” Coach Brent Thompson, The First Tee of Richmond

National School Program In 2012, through the National School Program, 20 elementary schools in the metro Richmond area taught The First Tee’s Life Skills curriculum during P.E. classes bringing core values education and the game of golf to over 9,000 students.
“[Golf] is the one sport that I have introduced to my students that was a ‘first’ for almost all of them. It was so refreshing to be able to get them excited about something they had never played. Because the [First Tee] equipment is designed for my students’ actual size and ability, achieving success with the skills of putting, chipping, and driving was possible for the majority of my children. If it wasn’t for The First Tee’s National Schools Program, I would never have been able to purchase the fabulous equipment provided to me.” Tina Seal, 25-year P.E. teacher, Curtis Elementary
Since 2010, The First Tee Richmond & Chesterfield has doubled the number of schools that participate in its National School Program.

“At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, we believe that every kid deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances. We provide opportunities by giving kids a safe place to have fun in programs that encourage academic achievement, healthy lifestyles, and employability. That’s why we’re excited to join forces with The First Tee of Richmond & Chesterfield in a dynamic pilot program for our kids to learn golf skills, life skills, and healthy habits on First Tee’s green grass facilities. This pilot program is a perfect fit for our young people, who thrive on physical activity, hands-on learning, and new experiences.” Todd McFarlane, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond
