Coverage from Cape Farewell in the south to Cape Egmont in the north, and the east from Cape Palliser to Cape Campbell. Most of the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay, Tasman Bay , Wellington and Cook Strait. At times. This channel may be workable outside these perimeters.

Channel 04 – Drumduan.

Covers Tasman Bay and the western d’Urville area. Permanently linked to both channels 60 and 65. This means that any transmission made on channel 04 is heard simultaneously on both channels 60 and 65 and vice versa.

Channel 60 – Mt. Burnett

Covers Kahurangi Point in the west, all of Golden Bay and the western side of d’Urville Island.

Channel 60 is permanently linked to channel 04 (and subsequently to channel 65) so any transmission made on channel 04 is heard on channel 04, 60, and 65 as well.

Channel 63 – Mt. Kahikatea. Covers Queen Charlotte Sound, Port Underwood, Cook Strait, south to Cape Campbell, Kapiti and Mana and also parts of Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds. This channel is good for Wellington approaches but not good within Wellington Harbour. (Mariners are advised to cancel Trip Reports at Barrets Reef buoy).

Channel 65 – Paradise Reserve Covers Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds, Havelock, d’Urville, western Cook Strait, parts of Tasman Bay, Golden Bay and large sections of Queen Charlotte Sound.

Channel 66 – Mt. Stokes

Coverage area is similar to Channel 01. This repeater is for commercial users only and is not operator monitored.

Channels 01 and 63 are linked for the marine forecasts only and one operator monitors both channels.

Channels are monitored 0700 hrs to 2200 hrs all year round

Yellowfoot pāua

Pāua are arguably the most popular species targeted by divers looking for a feed around New Zealand. Most people know the more common blackfoot pāua (Haliotis iris), however fewer are familiar with its smaller relative, the yellowfoot pāua (Haliotis australis).

Yellowfoot pāua are easily distinguished from their blackfoot cousins by their smaller, rounder and corrugated outer shell, and whiter mother of pearl colouration of the inner shell compared to the characteristic purple-blue colouration of the blackfoot paua.

Most obviously, they have an easily recognisable yellow foot, with black skirt and white epipodial tentacles, rather than the total black colouration in the blackfoot. The flesh is paler than the blackfoot pāua, obviously lacking the black pigmentation. They have similar taste, with a more delicate flavour making them preferable to some. They are typically smaller in size than blackfoot pāua, with the very biggest recorded being about 110mm, although they usually don’t grow much bigger than 90mm.

Yellowfoot pāua are found on rocky reef habitats around the extent of New Zealand’s coastline. While they have been found in depths up to 25m, they are most common from the low tide mark to about 4m depth.

They are generally less abundant and do not form the same characteristic large aggregations as blackfoot pāua, often being found on their own, or in groups of four or less. They prefer to inhabit the tops of boulder/ reef habitats, often between the stalks of seaweed, rather than exposed gutter and crevice type habitats associated with blackfoot pāua. Yellowfoot pāua are

more mobile than the largely sedentary blackfoot paua, which is likely to be due to a more active feeding strategy.

The life-cycle in of yellowfoot pāua follows the well documented life phases of other abalone species. Adults mature at 60-65 mm, where sexes can be determined by the colour of the gonads, which are purple-brown in females and creamy white in males. At peak maturity, female yellowfoot pāua can produce about three million eggs, compared to about seven million in blackfoot, suggesting their reproductive potential may be lower.

All abalone are ‘broadcast spawners,’ meaning sperm and eggs are released into the water column where fertilization and larval development occurs.

As with the blackfoot, the timing and magnitude of spawning events in yellowfoot pāua is highly variable, and spawning is thought to be triggered by environmental cues such as changes in water temperature and large swells.

After successful fertilization, yellowfoot pāua larvae are suspended in the water column for about eight days before settlement, where they attach to appropriate

habitats on the reef, and start to develop into juvenile pāua. Mortality in yellowfoot pāua during settlement is higher than blackfoot pāua, which, when combined with their relatively lower fecundity, suggests that overall reproductive success is much lower in yellowfoot pāua. Juvenile yellowfoot pāua inhabit the same ‘cryptic’ habitats as juvenile blackfoot pāua, preferring small spaces under boulders and in hidden crevices.

In the juvenile stages, yellowfoot pāua graze on algal films, before they graduate to drift algae (broken up seaweed) diets at about 10mm through to maturity and adulthood.

The minimum legal size for yellowfoot is 80mm and there is a recreational bag limit of 10 per person across most fisheries management areas. It is

worth noting (although not recommended) that this can be taken in conjunction with the corresponding bag limit of blackfoot pāua. There is a minimal commercial harvest of yellowfoot pāua of only a tonne or two per year, which is part of the total commercial allowance for blackfoot pāua. Commercial harvest is low due to the relative sparsity of yellowfoot pāua, making them uneconomic to harvest in large quantities. There is a small domestic market for yellowfoot pāua, but there is currently no international market. This is because of the high similarity of yellowfoot pāua with the abalone species produced in vast quantities in aquaculture farms in China (Haliotis discus hannai), making it di cult to compete in this market.

There are a couple of important considerations when harvesting yellowfoot pāua. For successful reproduction, abalone require close proximity between spawning adults for fertilization to occur. In blackfoot paua, this is facilitated by the formation of characteristic ‘spawning aggregations’, however the same phenomenon has not been observed to occur in yellowfoot pāua. To help maintain the spawning potential of yellowfoot populations in your favourite dive spot, only take one or

two from a reef and then swim a bit further (50m or so) before looking for more.

Like all abalone, yellowfoot pāua are haemophiliac so can be easily injured or killed during harvesting, which is an issue when undersized pāua are returned to the reef.

This may be exaggerated with yellowfoot pāua, which have a smaller minimum legal size—in some areas

a lot of pāua need to be measured to find ones over 80mm. As always, use an appropriate blunt harvesting tool to minimise damage, such as the Fisheries New Zealand pāua tools. Also, the recreational limit allows a diver to take up to 10 each day, on top of the daily bag limit for blackfoot pāua. However, yellowfoot pāua are much rarer than blackfoot pāua, so this may be more than the population can sustain in your area. As always, only take what you need for a feed to make sure there are plenty more pāua there next season.

Within moments, we were swarmed with blue cod but after pulling in two cod with large gashes in their side, it became apparent they weren’t the only predatory fish hanging around the area. Moments later I spotted a large dorsal fin slicing through the water right up against the rocks, which I quickly identified as a large bronze whaler.

German precision fishing gear now in NZ

Kiwi anglers have a great new choice with the arrival of the BALZER range of superbly designed and engineered rods and reels.

It’s all thanks to Daniel Eisenhut who as a kid growing up in Bavaria, Germany was always in the outdoors, exploring and fishing with his BALZER gear always close at hand.

Calling New Zealand home and more recently the South Island for the last 5 years, he now steps o his Oamaru home doorstep into a world

of open waters, braided rivers and lakes, some reminding him of his birthplace fishing adventures.

Being spoilt for choice and eager to go he lined up a bit of local gear that would do the job but once on the water he felt something was missing from his fishing experience. The deeply rooted attachment and feel of BALZER gear that he’d come to love was sadly absent.

Searching high and low for BALZER gear in NZ proved fruitless so onto the phone to

Germany where BALZER told Daniel they hadn’t got to NZ yet…but they were excited to hear they had a long time fan on the other side of the world and were interested to see if it was possible to have anglers running BALZER gear in New Zealand. After a bit of a chat a deal was struck and as they say the rest is history. BALZER NZ was born.

Hanns Balzer was particularly observant, a bit like a good angler, and noticed that in post-war Germany the many US army bods enjoying the diverse lakes and rivers…but there was no fishing gear. New Radar Safety Features Highlight Latest Simrad® Software Release

The new version includes upgrades around AIS, radar display, and greatly enhanced integration capabilities

The latest Simrad® software update was released this month for its Multi-Functional Displays (MFDs), packed with the latest technology and visual enhancements. The updates include a series of radar interface improvements and features focused on safety, like Dangerous Target Alert, and enhanced integration with partners. The new radar improvements make it easier to view, track and monitor vessels, and identify vessels that may be a risk to the user’s course. New icons for the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and symbols for radar tracked targets allow greater clarity of risks and can be combined into one unified view on your screen. In addition, several features in this release enhance connectivity, comfort and control with product integrations including the CZone® Control Bar for digital switching, SteadySteer™ support and Mercury Smart Tow for optimal tubing, water skiing and wake boarding speed – each easily integrated into Simrad® MFDs. One of the key safety updates is the new Dangerous Target Alert that warns the

operator of dangerous radar and AIS targets according to the target parameters in “Settings” and “Tracked Targets”. The dangerous target alert provides a simple diagram in a pop-up window that shows the range, the graphical bearing and heading of the vessel in relation to the operator’s vessel.

And visually, the moving radar and AIS targets will now display a graduated trail showing the vessels post position history for enhanced situational awareness. “This is a significant safety and situational awareness tool that not only alerts the user but guides them to the relative range and bearing of the dangerous target,” said Stephen Thomas, SVP Product. “By showing the historical target movement with clean trails, you get much less clutter on the PPI, the way you do with older, more

traditional video trails.”

In February, the Fiordland Marine Guardians launched an online survey for people who fish recreationally in the Fiordland Marine Area (the FMA). Over 200 people responded (thank you!), contributing valuable knowledge and accounts of fishing in the FMA to our ongoing assessment of fisheries sustainability for Fiordland and the wider fishing experience.

Our focus on recreational fishing stemmed from concerns about the serial

depletion of fisheries within the inner fiords, where commercial fishing has been excluded since 2005 with the enactment of the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Management Act.

We now have a more comprehensive understanding of the current state of di erent fisheries and what people’s experiences are on and under the water when fishing and gathering kai moana in Fiordland.

Now, our job is to evaluate the survey results alongside outputs from face-to-face hui (Tangata Tiaki, Amateur Charter Vessel operators, recreational fishers) and the available fisheries science data.

New Zealand’s Inshore Commercial Fisheries has recently developed an innovative and proactive programme that provides education, technical advice, specifications on methods for mitigating vessel and gear interaction with protected non-fish species, such as dolphins, sharks, seabirds, turtles and sealions, and has implemented operational procedures for their trawl, set-net surface and longline fleets.

Operational guidelines provide a set of rules/standards to guide fishers in their fishing operation, potential mitigation methods and actions and regulatory reporting requirements. The guidelines also include protected species risk management plans that are vessel specific and include details of adopted mitigation methods.

Widespread opposition to the review

At the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Federation of Freshwater Anglers (NZFFA), held in Nelson in late June, it was unanimously resolved by the committee to send a delegation to Wellington to inform the Minister of Conservation of the widespread opposition to any government appointees to Fish & Game (F&G) Councils and implementation of any of the recommendations from the review be conditional upon feedback from the 150,000 F&G licence holders.

Since the review was released, the NZFFA has received numerous calls from concerned past and present F&G councillors, from both the regions and national F&G Council.

The NZFFA conducted its own survey of licence holders, which showed overwhelming opposition to government interference in the operation of F&G. The NZFFA has written to Ray Grubb, Chairman of F&G NZ Council urging F&G to undertake its own survey as a matter of urgency.

Specification drift

On 10th June 2020, the Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage, announced a ministerial review into the governance of Fish & Game. She stated, “The review is

limited to a health check of the governance of F&G. It is not a review of F&G’s statutory roles or functions”.

The Terms of Reference for that review identified that “(17) The review panel will conduct a survey of licence holders to assess their views’. Crucially, this was subsequently waived by the Minister. In our view this is a critical failing, given F&G is entirely funded by licence holders.

A Government Takeover of Fish & Game?

Some of the thirty six recommendations of the review went beyond the terms of reference e.g;

• Expanded powers for the Minister.

• Altering the statutory focus of FGCs.

Recommending representation of wider community interests and engagement, (at the expense of licence holder interests).

The Chair of NZFGC to be a paid Ministerial appointee.

• Paid Government appointees on regional and national councils.

Many of the recommendations require legislative amendments to the Conservation Act.

The Need for a Review

There is no argument that F&G has shown some dysfunctional governance in some regions and at national level.

The NZFFA was caught up in the infighting within F&G when comments in an NZFFA newsletter, by a North Canterbury F&G councillor and NZFFA executive member, prompted threats of libel action by F&G. Both parties have had to meet legal costs to settle the matter— funds ultimately coming from licence holders and fishing clubs.

Act in haste—repent at leisure

Throughout all of this, the 150,000 licence holders have not been consulted on their views of the recommendations. The NZFFA is anxious that licence holders are given the opportunity to have their say in what could be a massive change in the operations of Fish and Game NZ.

F&G has a proud and long heritage stretching back to the 1860s, initially as acclimatisation societies before being replaced by F&G in 1990.

F&G is first and foremost the voice of licenced anglers and hunters and separate to the bureaucracy that defines DOC.

It seems timely and targeted professional advice on basic governance is all that is required to get F&G back on track. Not an opportunistic takeover by Wellington bureaucrats.
