After loss, Rangers look for momentum in home finale JESSICA STOVALL Staff Writer The Rangers will play their last regular season game 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in Masters Gym. They will be looking to defeat the Paris Junior College Dragons in hopes of gaining momentum going into the Region XIV Basketball Championships Tournament. “We’re looking for another well-fought game, said head coach Brian Hoberecht. A well-fought game is exactly what the Rangers received Wednesday night against the Tyler Junior College Apaches. The men added another loss to their season with a final 66-53, making them 16-
12 on the season. “I don’t think we beat ourselves tonight, said Hoberecht. “We got beat by a good team. The Apaches held the Rangers to a slow start, and started their lead early and went full force throughout. The men went into the locker room 31-26 at the half, with only two players to finish with double digit scores. Travis Betran and Fred Mattison scored a combined 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to add a win to the season. “We were never in sync offensively, Hoberecht said. The team was able to guard the Apaches, having 37 defensive stops for the night, but the offensive
battle was a struggle throughout each minute. “This game was a little bit frustrating, Hoberecht said. “We tried to shoot through big boys. The Rangers were coming off Saturday’s loss to the Blinn College Buccaneers in Brenham. Four players scored in double digits. Jaylon Washington and Chinedu Amajolyi scored 11 each and Braylon Lazare and Fred Mattison each scored 10, but the men still couldn’t hold on in the last minutes. A hard fought, 72-67 loss, the men didn’t make enough plays down the stretch. “At the end, we got two really good looks at the basket, Hoberecht said. “Part of making plays is making shots.
Football team hedges funds for support SHENIECE CHAPPELL Staff Writer The KC football team is participating in the program’s second annual “Kilgore Spring Clean to help raise money for the football program.
The work is free, according to head coach J.J. Eckert, but donations are appreciated. Football players are available on certain dates this semester to complete outdoor yard work for the East Texas community.
Services include mowing, edging, trimming hedges, raking leaves, clearing debris and other lawn duties within the reason. For more information and available dates, contact Chris Smith, co-offensive coordinator, at 903-983-3734.

t was just another dusty book on the shelf that he had walked past dozens of times. It had a simply designed cover with a black and white photograph of a cowboy–
nothing too eye catching. But when Rex Hamilton, Avinger freshman, began to read “Noah McCuistion: Pioneer Texas Cattleman by Carleen M. Daggett, he discovered family history linking him to the beginning of the Republic of Texas. From 1835-1836, Texas and Mexico battled in the Texas Revolution. The Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna overthrew Mexico’s constitutional government and abolished state governments, provoking Texans to rebel. On March 1, 1836, a group of men met at the fourth convention at Washingtonon-the-Brazos to decide the fate of Texas. Here delegates declared Texas’ independence and established the Republic of Texas. This convention adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Also at the convention delegates wrote a constitution for the new republic and elected a government to control Texas until regular fall elections. Later, Sam Houston was elected president of the Republic of Texas. As president, Houston had the responsibility of overseeing the state’s finances; moreover, Texas had bills to pay, but no money to pay them. Here’s where Hamilton’s discovery and book fit in. Hamilton’s lineage traces back to Alexander McCuistion, a somewhat wealthy man in the 1600s who never married or had children. When he died at the age of 93 in 1740 he “left his considerable estate in kegs of gold coins to the three granddaughters of his brother Benjamin McCuistion. Robert McCuistion’s mother, Ann Moody, was 8 years old when a keg of gold was delivered to her. The book says that “she was taught that it was her responsibility to protect it and that secrecy was the keynote of her protection; that it was never to be mentioned outside of the family. Ann was worthy of that trust. Luckily for Texas, Robert inherited Ann’s keg of gold and he moved to Texas and settled about 100 miles westsouthwest of Nacogdoches. Upon a visit with Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston learned that Congress would not be helping Texas in any way so in order for the republic to survive help would have to come from within. Houston
“
immediately began contemplating how he would get money for Texas when Jackson told him of Robert and his keg of gold and of 16 others who owned gold. Naturally, Houston wondered if Robert still had the keg after 17 years. Hamilton’s book quotes Jackson as saying, “His mother kept it for 79 years, and when she died at age 87, she had never taken one coin from the keg. Yes, I’d wager that Robert still has it. This is how Hamilton’s relative Robert became Texas’ first financier. After that, Houston invited these 17 men to a dinner where the book quotes him in asking for their help by saying: “‘I know how every man here feels about his gold, however much or however little he may own. Robert, I know yours is an old family legacy, I know the story from your kinsman, Andrew Jackson, and I know that yours represents by far the greatest amount here, but gentlemen, these are grave times, and Texas, the land we love, must stand or fall on what we do here today; gentlemen, Texans, how many of you will give your all...will give your gold to Texas?’ And they all sprang to their feet with a shout of ‘Aye.’ While each man had a special connection to his gold, without their contributions Texas would not have been able to pay for the Texas revolution. “The keg of gold was a very treasured family heritage and he (Robert) gave it to the state of Texas to help fight the war, Hamilton said. It was only about a year and a half ago when Hamilton was introduced to the book. “My mom had handed it to me one day and I saw Noah on the cover and it was really appealing to me, Hamilton said. “I’ve always been interested in history. Without Hamilton’s family’s keg of gold, the Republic of Texas would not have survived as it did. With every turn of a page, Hamilton reconnected with his ancestors as he learned of his family ties to Texas.

The 13-day siege of the Alamo ends as more than 200 Texans under the command of Col. James Bowie and Lt. Col. William Travis fell to Mexican soldiers. On Feb. 24, Travis wrote: “I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier... VICTORY or DEATH. After the siege, all surviving Texan fighters were executed.

Houston abandons Gonzales, orders the city burned and retreats eastward to avoid the approach of the Mexican Army. Settlers flee as well in what was to be called the Runaway Scrape.

Following Gen. Santa Anna's direct order, Mexican soldiers execute Col. James Fannin and 344 of his men at Goliad. An estimated 30 Texans escaped. As Texan forces fell to the Mexican army at the battles of Refugio and Coleto, they too were put to death. Four hundred in total were executed. The news outraged the volunteers of Houston's army.
‡$SULO
The Battle of San Jacinto marked the conclusion of the Texas Revolution as Texan forces, outnumbered and under-trained, launched a successful attack led by Houston starting at 4:30 p.m. The battle lasted approximately 18 minutes. Discipline was hard to maintain as Texan soldiers rallied to cries of “Remember the Alamo! and “Remember Goliad! Houston reported that 630 Mexican troops were killed and 730 were taken prisoner. Of the Texas troops, nine of a force of 910 were killed or mortally wounded.

South by Southwest revs up Texas Triangle SARAH SULLIVAN Entertainment Editor
I
n such a demanding society, convenience is a must. What’s convenient about living in East Texas? We are so close to what we like to refer to as “The Texas Triangle.” Our Northwestern neighbor, Dallas; the home to the Astrodome, Houston; and the music Mecca itself, Austin, all form a glorious triangle of metropolitan goodies. A beautiful part about cities is the musical draw that they have. The big concerts happen in the big cities; it’s that simple. March holds much promise for a frequent concert attendee or just somebody who has been looking to fill a live music void. Dallas and Houston have a nice line-up for this month with a little bit of
everything to satisfy any desired genre. With the aid of Ticketmaster, we have compiled a list of concerts happening throughout March in Dallas and Houston. However, Austin is a bit unusual with its talent line-up. But hey, “Keep Austin Weird.” Right? Austin is home to the now well-known annual South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) which started in March 1987. Event organizers projected for 150 people to attend the first festival, but more than 700 came. Twenty-four years later, SXSW 2011 drew a crowd of more than 19,000. In its history, musicians like Hanson, John Mayer and James Blunt have been discovered, and many sister festivals have sprouted from SXSW. If more than 5,000 bands flocking from across the globe doesn’t satisfy you enough, interactive and film portions are featured in the SXSW festival. The SXSW 2009 featured the U. S. premiere of “The Hurt Locker” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2010. For more information, visit sxsw.com.
