riday, April 13, is the last day to drop classes with a “W. Drops are not allowed after the Registrar’s Office closes at 3:45 p.m. on the KC campus and 2:30 p.m. on the KC-Longview campus on April 13, unless the divisional dean approves extenuating circumstances. Flex classes and other courses that do not follow the standard semester calender have varying drop dates. To drop a class, students must visit either the Registrar’s Office on the second floor of the Devall Student Center or the KC-Longview office. Students must fill out a drop request form and indicate their reasons for dropping. A photo I.D. is required.
Students unable to come to campus to drop a class should contact the Registrar’s Office at 903-983-8606 for instructions on how to drop by fax. Drops are not accepted by phone. Students who drop a class with a “W will receive a grade of a “W on their transcript which does not hurt their GPA; however, there are consequences to consider before dropping. The state Legislature passed a law in May 2007 limiting students to six drops in their college career in Texas public institutions, unless drop reasons are approved by the state. For example, if a student drops two classes while at KC, when he transfers to another state college he can only drop four more classes during the rest of his college career. See DROPS on Page 3
Walking across campus in your new post Spring Break outfit in the pouring rain is not ideal. You have no umbrella so your hair is soaked and your shoes are soggy. How could this all have been avoided? KC’s online weather page is up and running again thanks to computer programmer Ray Jackson. Students can now check the weather at http:mykc. kilgore.edu/weather/ before going to class to prepare for the day’s Texas weather. The website shows temperature, humidity, dew point, wind direction, wind speed, rain amount, windchill, solar radiation and more. The server updates every minute to

Financial aid deadlines are fast approaching. General institutional scholarship applications must be postmarked by Sunday, April 1. Scholarship application forms can be found on the KC website under the current and former students tab. Once on this tab, students then need to click on financial aid from the drop down menu then on the word scholarships at the top of the page. Listed on the website are departmental scholarships and forms for both traditional and non-traditional scholarships. General scholarship applications do not apply to departmental scholarships which have their own criteria and contact information and are only available through specific departments. Only incoming freshmen are eligible to apply for the traditional scholarship. All other students must use the non-traditional scholarship application. All applications are considered, but students must fit the criteria to be eligible. Students need to answer application questions clearly and fully. Recommendation letters need to be from more than one source. An instructor may

Chelsi Borders After graduating from Kilgore High School, what made you decide to attend KC? ... I thought it would be a good step in between high school and a university that would help me adjust in a more comfortable setting. Why did you decide to become involved in so many KC organizations? ... I originally didn’t plan on being this involved, but I started with the orientation leaders before I was even in college. My family has also been very involved in Ducks Unlimited for a long time and I love it so I thought why not. Then I noticed the Ranger Ambassadors when I was applying and knew I wanted to do that and sooner or later I was an Ambassador. Which KC organization is your favorite? Why? ... I don’t think that I could pick a favorite, I love certain aspects of all of them. Who/ What has inspired you most throughout your two years at KC? ... The faculty at Kilgore College. awesome instructors and the staff that I am around every day is wonderful. What have you gained from being at KC? ... I have definitely learned time management and good study skills. Being so involved makes it difficult to find spare time to do homework, therefore, it is important that I plan out my week to find that time to do my school work. What has been your greatest accomplishment while attending KC? ... Being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. What is your overall favorite thing about KC? ... Definitely the people! I work with great people and all the students in my organizations are a lot of fun to be around. What is one thing most people don’t know about you? ... I am not afraid to get dirty! Believe it or not I live on a small farm we like to call a zoo since we have a few out-ofthe-ordinary pets. My family enjoys taking in abandoned to injured wildlife, which has been a blast while growing up.

STUDENT SUCCESS TIP “Other than eating right and sleeping enough, I would advise students to break all the material into pieces and study about 30- 45 minutes at a time without distracting background noise or music with words. I would further advise students to study the topics that they consciously or subconsciously avoid. (Students tend to study the things they know over and over again because they know it and it makes them feel good.) And, I always tell my students to NOT study lists, but try to relate different content materials in different ways. This provides new and different ways to associate information. Compare and contrast is an excellent way to develop this. – Laney Mobley Dept. Chair / Instructor, biological sciences

PTK recognized /RFDO FKDSWHU DGYLVHU UHFHLYH DZDUGV DW UHJLRQDO FRQYHQWLRQ NICOLE DISEKER Staff Writer A surge in activity has propelled the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa to regional recognition. The KC chapter of the honors society won multiple awards at the Texas Regional Convention in Odessa. “This was the first year we had elected to go in some time, said Michele Daniels, PTK co-adviser. PTK received the Pinnacle Award for having increased membership in the past year. The chapter has increased membership by 15 percent since last fall. Daniels received the Horizon Award for outstanding leadership within PTK. “I was shocked, Daniels said. “I wasn’t expecting it at all but was so grateful for the recognition for Kilgore College.
Gamma Omicron President Ethan Witthaus represented KC at the convention. “It’s a good way to network with the other chapters, Witthaus said. Isaac Griffin, District III officer, presented the Texas Regional Officers Award to Gamma Omicron. Griffin attended PTK’s induction ceremonies earlier this semester and in the fall. “He said we were the first chapter that made him feel truly welcomed, Daniels said. Workshops included speakers, such as Jerry Woodfill, Apollo 13 spacecraft warning system engineer; Susan Edwards, dean of academic affairs and honors programs; C.D. She works closely with the physicians of Trinity Clinic Kilgore and triage students. McFadden said she likes to visit with students who have a pre-existing conditions or a medical problem so she can become familiar with their medical history. Her
services vary from treating injuries, giving first aid, changing bandages, monitoring blood sugars and blood pressures, administrating medications and counseling about health-related issues. McFadden also administers Hepatitis B, meningitis and flu vaccines. KC will cover the appointment cost onetime, per problem, per semester. However, KC does not cover the cost of any lab work, X-rays, procedures or medications. McFadden graduated from KC’s Vocational Nurse Program (LVN) about eight years ago. McFadden has been a nurse at KC for two years. “I love to help people and it is a very gratifying feeling when you know that you have helped someone or possibly helped in saving a life,” McFadden said. “ I love helping these young adults and teaching

This statement, concerning drug eligibility has been removed from the FAFSA application for financial aid.
KATIE KUYKENDALL Staff Writer KC police officers have been issued a challenge to get in shape. After the initiation of KC Fit and conversations with other officers, Martin Pessink, KC chief of police, decided that his officers could use an incentive to become more fit. He is calling it the “Fit For Duty Challenge.” He sees the challenge as a good way to encourage officers to get in better shape to help their job performance. “I want students to know that we work to provide the best service and part of that is being fit for duty,” Pessink said. There is a loss of body fat competition and a fitness test. The challenge will end May 15, which is Police Memorial Day. At the end, Lt. Tony Means, supervisor of police, will work with the Parks Fitness Center personnel to administer a standardized entry level test used by many agencies. The test will include a sit and reach, sit up and bench press section, as well as a one-and-a-half mile run. “A little competition is healthy sometimes,” Pessink said. Along with becoming more fit, winners will receive a monetary reward. Pessink contributed $100 of his own money, $50 into both categories and is asking that each competitor put in $5. Over half of the officers signed up as well as Dr. Michael Jenkins, vice president of student development, who oversees the police department. All contestants have taken the body fat test and will be taking the preliminary fitness test soon. “I expect to win my money back,” Pessink said.

Weather: Meteorlogical observance March 23 FROM PAGE 1 from outside; then the data is sent wirelessly to a receiver panel in the lab. That receiver panel is connected to the computer which uploads it to the Internet.” What better way to celebrate meteorological day than to visit KC’s website. The World Meteorological Organization was established on March 23, 1950, with the mission of providing world leadership in expertise and international cooperation in weather, climate, hydrology and water resources and environmental issues, according to the World Meteorological Organization website. Arson Investigation courses. It is also a designated institution by the Canadian Province of British Columbia.
Drops: Be wary of consequences FROM PAGE 1 KC’s online catalog notes that when students withdraw from a course they must select a primary reason for dropping. “The approved drop reasons are generally things that are out of a student’s control. Drops initiated because you are not doing well in the class or because you don’t like the teacher will count against your total,” Registrar Staci Martin said. Approved reasons that do not count toward the six drop limit include: personal illness, care of sick, injured or needy person, death of a family member or close friend, called to active military duty, family member or close friend is called to active military duty, change in work schedule, transportation problems, personal or family obligations or withdrawal from school. Also if an instructor or other college personnel drops a student, this drop does not count as one
of the six drops. KC’s online catalog states that reasons for administrative withdrawal of a student include: failure to pay tuition and fees, to provide accurate information or admission credentials, to remove a “hold” in a timely manner, to have excessive absences or to exhibit unacceptable student behavior. “I always recommend talking to your instructor before you drop a class,” Martin said. Drops can also affect scholarships and financial aid. Most scholarships require students to maintain a 12-hour course load while federal loans require students to maintain six hours. Financial aid officer Annette Morgan explains how dropping below the financial aid course requirements affects student aid. “They do not realize that they are not getting the best value for their money – whether it is grants or loans,” Morgan said. “Dropping too many classes can put a student on
financial aid probation, or financial aid suspension – which means that the student’s aid has been suspended, and he is no longer eligible for federal funds.” Pell Grant regulations have also changed. Morgan explains that Pell Grants can only be used for 12 semesters during a college career. Also loans have set monetary limits that students can receive. “When classes are repeated, and additional grants or loans are paying for them, a student is going into deeper debt than ever, and yet, not moving through his degree plan successfully in order to transfer out to a university, or graduate so he/she can find employment to start repaying their loans,” Morgan said. Another consequence to consider before dropping a class is that students living on campus must enroll in 15 hours and complete 12 of those hours to be eligible to live in the campus dorms.
