1977 FOOTBALL TEAM Q The 1977 team had an 8-2 record and became the 1977 CoConference Football Champions. Seven men were nominated to the All-Conference Team that year. The honors that went along with the title included Coach Jim Miller being named TJCFC Coach of the Year and Mike Menefee Kicker of the Year. Making All-Conference offensive team were Bob Laird, offensive guard; and David Scott, split end; Mark Ehlers, tackle; Lonnie Davis, cornerback; Mike Menefee, safetypunter; Roger Adams, nose guard; and Ronnie Wilson, defensive end. While Ingram attended KC in 1964-1965, he was voted Shrine Bowl Outstanding Back, two-time unanimous All-Conference player and honorable mention All-American. ,QJUDP DWWHQGHG 8QLYHUVLW\ RI 1RUWK Texas in 1966 where his football career came to an end after an injury GXULQJ WKH ÀIWK JDPH Ingram resides in Fort Worth with his wife of 44 years, Gay. CECELIA SANDERS Q This year!s contributor award goes to Cecelia Sanders, who was the secretary to the athletic director and student activities for more than 20 years. She was born in Louisiana but spent most of her life in Texas, graduating from Kilgore High School and KC. Sanders is married to Roland Sanders, who played football at KC in the early 1960s. Sanders has three sons, Jimmy, Michael and Bobby. “My entire family have been fans of KC athletics for many years; in fact, when the boys were younger, we would sometimes travel on the bus with the basketball team to their away games,� Sanders said. In 1984 Sanders became part of the KC family and worked for 11 years in housing and student activities before moving to athletics and student development in 1995. “I poured my entire being into trying to make athletics and student development the best it could possible be,� she said. Sanders retired in 2008 and is part of the Hall of Fame Committee.

LINDA WATSON Q Linda Watson played for the Lady Rangers 1992-1993. In 1993 she was UHFRJQL]HG DV WKH 1-&$$ :RPHQҋV 1DWLRQDO 7RXUQDPHQWҋV 0RVW 9DOXDEOH Player after the Lady Rangers became WKH ÀUVW WHDP LQ 1-&$$ KLVWRU\ WR ZLQ three national titles. After attending KC Watson received a scholarship to Louisiana Tech University, where she earned a sociology degree in 1996. Watson moved back to Kilgore in 1997 and became the assistant women!s basketball coach through 1998. For the next year she also coached at Texas College in Tyler. From 2000 to 2002 she became a substitute teacher in both Houston and Dallas. Watson moved back to her hometown in Los Angeles Calif., in 2002 and is raising her 9-year-old great niece and has been working at Coca-Cola since 2005.

Bank on financial responsibilities E

ver seen that Father’s Day T-shirt that has a large box with a tie on it and reads, “My kids think I am an ATM”? Wouldn’t that be nice if that were always true? Unfortunately, part of growing up means taking responsibility of our finances which is not always fun. Students need to take charge of their finances. As adults, it is necessary to accurately manage one’s savings and since college is a time for us to prepare for the real world, what better time to start practicing banking responsibility than now? We need to know how to manage our money if we are going to survive in a consumer culture. We need to know how much money we should save for rent, groceries, bills and how much money we can afford to spend on luxury items or vacations. Fraud scams circulate through society on a daily basis which means it is even more important to keep record of our transactions. When a wallet of cash starts thinning out it is easier to notice your money disappearing than it is with a credit card if proper records are not kept. Using credit cards haphazardly is inexcusable when banks offer quick and easy ways for cardholders to check their transactions. Online banking is a source cardholders can use to track their transaction history anywhere they have computer access. Herring Bank, which is in charge of

dispersing money onto the Ranger cards, offers an online banking system where students can keep track of their past and pending transactions. Mobile banking is made easy with the many banking applications available for smartphones. Banks such as Capital One have apps where cardholders can view their transactions, pay bills, check balances, locate ATMs and other features. Both online banking and mobile banking offer services where cardholders can access their account information in a matter of minutes. There is an ATM machine located in the Devall Student Center where students can check their debit/credit cards or Ranger card balance for free. By checking the balance of your accounts at least once a week and keeping a record of your transactions you can avoid discrepancies. Cashier’s assistant Melissa Johnson says if students don’t check their balance daily they should check it at least every other day and notify the bank if there is a discrepancy. While responsible banking might not be as easy as treating your parents like an ATM, it is not that difficult. ATMs, online banking and mobile banking are all available and ready for you to use, so before you swipe your credit/debit card again, find someway to track your spending and avoid discrepancies.

often wonder about the future. I’m sure it’s a common thought amongst others and I’m also sure that most of us are worried. With things the way they are it’s hard not to be. The economy circling the drain, the 10-year war against who knows at this point, and with each passing year I find my generation closer to taking up the gauntlet. The question is are we ready? Are we ready to live up to our potential and truly influence our world with TIMOTHY progressive and innovative STUCKEY ideas? We live in WEB EDITOR the information age, surrounded by an extraordinary amount of variety but we’ve closed ourselves off to the world with meaningless and monotonous gimmicks. Facebook is a prime example. We have the ability to keep in touch with people from multiple countries instantaneously, but most of us spend hours absorbing useless gossip. We may have the next leap of human innovation at our fingertips, but we’re too ready to settle for what’s available. We get so wrapped up in everyday things that I believe we forget to look at the horizon and dream. Growing up in a consumer-based society has also helped shape our priorities. Things like bills and work, while important, cloud our vision and make us anxious of the future instead of hopeful. We each have a voice and something that makes us stand out, yet we are all connected by the same basic want every person desires: to live a happy life. I have faith in the potential good humanity has to offer, regardless of the many times we have wasted the opportunities to rise up and make the world better. This is an exciting time for us, not just because we are in college pursuing a higher education, but because we are transitioning into the times where our decisions will help shape the world around us, for better or worse. Student still has good time without electronics

S

omething drastic happened to me a few weekends ago. I never thought it would be as hard as it was, being locked in a building for 24 hours without my electronics. When I was first challenged with the idea I thought it would be easy; I did not think that I depended on my electronics that much. I soon found that I was wrong. I walked into the building that my church calls the Outpost only to hear Pastor Larry say, “this will be a test to see how well you entertain yourself without your electronics and to get you to rethink the way you do things daily.” So we were locked in the youth building. I had taken my school

books in order to study, although I found myself not being able to concentrate. I looked at the pale white walls with black trim and listened to the different conversations the BAILEY LUGENBELL other girls were STAFF WRITER having. As the first couple of hours went by I found myself reaching for my phone having phone withdrawal. I went through some of the cabinets and found boxes of paint and balloons. We decided to paint on each other’s faces. The girls got big

Then the girls and I began to color on over-sized Dora the Explorer coloring sheets. A few more hours passed. I found a trash can, emptied it, took the bag out and stepped inside of the can. I allowed my fellow “inmates” to turn the can on its side and roll me around the Outpost. Afterward, I was dizzy and queasy. I laid down, but did not go to sleep. Instead, I sat on the bathroom floor talking with one of my friends until two in the morning. The next day I was awakened by a massive blow

horn at eight in the morning. I dragged my body to the kitchen for coffee. Again, I reached for my phone to check the time and my Facebook. Searching for my phone was a failure, because it was nowhere to be found. As it turned out, nobody really missed their phones. We did missed our showers and our own beds. By the 24-hour mark when everyone was allowed to go home there was relief in the air from all participants, including me. All together it was a successful event. ’ve attended both KC and TJC for the last couple years. I was attending and remember when TJC implemented their policy requiring students/faculty to wear their name badges around their necks. The first week of school I heard a couple faculty complaining in the hall where we students could hear. Later I was on the elevator with a KC grounds employee who told me he would not wear one but keep his in his wallet. Even today, I was in the cafeteria and many people were not wearing their badges around their neck. A police officer did walk in and then left and questioned no one who didn’t have their badge on. I’m in classes and some do not wear their badges and instructors do not question them. A huge majority of students do not wear this school ID per policy and thus I feel this policy is a failed one. I understood we were not allowed to go to class without the badges around our neck. And if instructors complain about wearing them then why should we as students want to wear them? At TJC, I never heard faculty complain about wearing them and they had an officer on a bicycle riding around campus giving tickets to people right and left for not following through with the new school policy. I’m beginning to think this policy isn’t going to work at KC because the faculty and the police department do not enforce the policy. – Kristopher Hale White Oak freshman
