“The primary reason for this policy is the safety and security of our students and staff,” said Dr. Michael Jenkins, vice president of student development. “When you have an open campus with about 6,000 people you can’t always tell if the people there are supposed to be there. Having IDs helps identify who is supposed to be here and who is not.” KCPD initiated the idea of requiring IDs after handling issues of individuals who weren’t supposed to be on campus, Jenkins noted.

KCPD Chief Martin Pessink said, “Our responsibility is to have as safe of a campus as possible. This is one of the measures we can take to do this. This is an open campus and we encourage visitors, but we know we have had people who are not here for college business and we want to identify these people. We have had gang-related activity, fights around the dorms, drug issues and complaints of people in the mall area, so this is a way for us to identify the students and See IDs on Page 3

6,348 registered by noon Thursday shows slight drop !"#$%&'()*+,$%&( %$$-$."/($%&,( "#(0"12(3%4/*,+,( CHELSEA HOUGH Managing Editor As of noon Thursday, Aug. 18, there were 6,348 students enrolled, which is a 2.7 percent decrease from this time last year. Students will be able to make changes to their schedules on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 22-23, by visiting the Counseling Center and various offices across campus. During the first 15 class days, students will receive a 70 percent refund for dropped courses. Students who were unable to sign

up for classes are not at a total loss. Full Throttle courses are still available. Full Throttle is a group of courses offered at KC-Longview. Courses meet Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. The courses start Sept. 19 and are 12 weeks in length. “This gives students a chance to register late for classes and still get a full load of courses, provided they don’t have any developmental requirements,” said Staci Martin, registrar and director of admissions. “This is also an opportunity for a student who is already registered to add something to their schedule later in the semester if they need to.” For more information on Full Throttle courses, visit the Counseling Center in the Devall Student Center or call 903-753-2642.

KC shares common book TIMOTHY STUCKEY Staff Writer KC begins the Fall semester with its first common book project, “1 Dead in Attic.” Readers will follow journalist Chris Rose in New Orleans two days after Hurricane Katrina hits as he offers a first-hand, personal experience of what he observed and lived through. The book is voluntary to instructors to use as either extra credit or as part of the class curriculum. The book received high praise from Dr. Richard Harrison, dean of liberal and fine arts. “It gave me a whole new appreciation with what

the hurricane victims went through,” Harrison said. “Everybody remembers Katrina; everybody remembers the impact.” Harrison, who oversees instructional programs, found that the book was well received by Eastfield College where it engaged both the staff and students. “1 Dead in Attic” is part of the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan: Get a GRIP (Give Reading Its Priority), a program focused on encouraging students to read both in and out of class. “The purpose of literature is to raise life to a level of consciousness,” Harrison said, “and that’s what I want students to find, that they’re not the only ones dealing with these problems.”

Attending an institution of higher learning typically gives students advantages in life. Phi Theta Kappa is an organization that can offer heightened recognition and is a testament to accomplishment some students seek. PTK is a national honor society organization for two-year colleges. It is for students who strive to succeed, surpassing the standard collegiate goal of simply attaining a degree. PTK can open doors for students. “Students are granted access to additional scholarships. They gain valuable leadership skills while enjoying fellowship with other members of the college and community,” said Michele Daniels, PTK adviser. Change recently came to the structure of KC’s chapter of Gamma Omicron. Dr. Paul Buchanan, geology instructor, and Daniels, speech instructor, were appointed PTK’s new advisers in June. Eligibility requirements for those who want to join this organization must generally have a 3.6 grade point average. A full-time student must have completed at least 12 hours of course work in the previous long semester. A parttime student must have completed at least 20 total hours. All required hours must be able to be applied to an associate’s degree. Returning PTK students are invited to the official “Welcome Back Meeting” to be held at noon Friday, Aug. 26, in Old Main, Room 140. Members will be served pizza and cake. Plans to improve the status of the KC chapter are under way. “Our goal is to reach five-star status,” Buchanan said. For more information, contact Buchanan or Daniels via KC email. Buchanan’s email is pbuchanan@ kilgore.edu and Daniel’s is mdaniels@kilgore.edu.

Theatre auditions slated Aug. 24-26 SARAH SULLIVAN Staff Writer Auditions for the first theatre production of the season, “Charley’s Aunt” by Brandon Thomas, are from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 24-26 in Van Cliburn Auditorium. “Charley’s Aunt” is a British farce set in Oxford, England, in the 1890s. The cast consists of six men and four women. A crew will also be needed if students wish to be a part of the production, but don’t desire to be on stage. The production dates are Oct. 4-9. All students on theatre scholarships are required to attend all days of auditions. It is suggested that theatre majors attend. Auditions will be cold readings and are open to anyone. For more information, contact Kathy Barber, director, at 903-9838126 or kbarber@kilgore.edu.

ET Youth Chorus seeking singers The East Texas Youth Chorus is recruiting singers for its fall season. “The chorus offers homeschooled youth a fabulous arts component to one’s schedule,” said Jim Taylor, ETYC director and KC’s director of choral activities. “It also gives students the opportunity to sing great music with friends in a challenging but fun setting that can prepare for college singing.” The chorus will begin the semester with participation in a concert, “East Texas Remembers 9/11,” in remembrance of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, featuring

a mass chorus of 150 accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra. The concert is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in Dodson Auditorium. Admission is free thanks to donations by the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce, Martin Gas, Patterson Nissan of Longview, SWEPCO and other businesses. The choir rehearses in the Choral Room of the Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center on the Kilgore College campus on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The ETYC was created six years ago for home-schooled

high school-age youth in the East Texas area, and is operated under the guidance of KC’s Continuing Education Department. “Members must pass a simple audition to determine that they can carry a tune,” Taylor said. “No music reading skills are necessary, and sightsinging skills are taught in rehearsals.” A tuition fee of $50 per semester is required at the beginning of the semester which includes cost of sheet music, accompanist, director, rehearsal hall and performances. “It is also possible for juniors and seniors in high

school to enroll in the choir and receive dual credit at KC with costs appropriate to dual enrollment,” Taylor said. “Singers interested in joining may line up an audition ahead of time, or may simply come to a rehearsal and audition afterward.” For more information, contact Taylor for an audition time at (903) 9838122 or e-mail: jtaylor@ kilgore.edu. Registration will take place during the first few rehearsals. Students who join too late for the 9/11 concert may join through September to perform at the Nov. 17 concert.

Yoga offered for kinesiology credit For the first time, Kilgore College students can take yoga as a kinesiology elective. Beginning yoga courses are offered both in Kilgore and Longview this fall, and the courses will count toward physical education requirements to graduate with an associate’s degree. Kilgore yoga classes are

offered in Parks Fitness Center, and Longview classes are offered at Good Shepherd Medical Centers’ Institute for Healthy Living on Hawkins Parkway. Cecile Craft, KC’s yoga instructor, said she is excited that the college has made yoga a part of its kinesiology curriculum. “Yoga is a true healing art,”

non-students.” Concerning the issue of displaying one’s credit card number openly, KCPD is covering the last eight digits of the account number with the semester validation sticker. The first eight digits are the same on every card. For students receiving new ID cards, these cards have been reformatted so that the student ID number is printed on the reverse side of the card in smaller letters. Pessink notes that last year when the Ranger Cards were initiated many students wore them on lanyards and there was not one incident of theft or fraud. “There is no historic concern with the IDs being stolen by wearing it on your neck or lanyard. Plus we are taking additional security measures with the stickers,” Pessink said. “We didn’t have a single fraud or theft last year. Students need to guard their ID just like they would if it was in a wallet or purse.” If your ID is stolen or lost, however, contact KCPD immediately. Jenkins said another reason for this new policy is that wearing IDs will help identify the campus visitors and thus amp up the service and assistance

to KC visitors. Visitors will receive a temporary day pass while on campus. These passes are available in the buildings listed below. Also, a sense of unity and family will be created by this policy as students and staff members will support KC by wearing the school colors. Decorative lanyards can be purchased at the bookstore. “We are hoping people will get excited,” Jenkins said. “We have talked about in the doing contests for the most creative lanyard. We are trying to make it fun.” Students are required to have their KC IDs visible in order to enter class. IDs may be worn on a lanyard, badge holder or similar device. Faculty are to send students without an ID to an office where they can get a temporary day pass. However, students who appear to be abusing the day pass provision will be sent to KCPD to buy a day pass for $2.50. Complimentary lanyards are available in the KCPD offices. Unless wearing the ID would cause a safety issue, students are required to wear their IDs while in class. Jenkins said students who repeatedly violate this policy should be reported to KCPD and may be asked to leave the campus.

The game will be streaming live on Kansas’ Cox Channel 22, a statewide TV station. For the Rangers, this is the first televised game since the Pilgrims Pride Bowl in 2004. “I think it’s a neat deal that our players have the opportunity to go out in game one and have a chance to take the KC Rangers to play on television,” said head coach J.J. Eckert. “We’ve tried to emphasize that this is a business trip. We’re going up there with one focus, one goal, one purpose.” Sixty-five Rangers will travel to Hutchinson, Kan., to kick off the season. “The thing that we are focused on the most is that we have a positive start,” Eckert said. “If you can make sure and do a good job and experience some success early on in the season, I think it helps bring the football team together. We want to have a taste of victory early on so we can build on that.” Seven offensive starters and one defensive starter is returning from 2010.

Two quarterbacks will play this season: Andrew Jackson, thirdyear Bloomingfield Hills, Mich., sophomore, and Tyler Copeland, a Sam Houston State University transfer. The starting quarterback has not yet been selected. Despite the three-digit temperatures, the Rangers have continued to practice normally with the addition of an 8:30 p.m. dinner to help replenish their bodies and avoid medical issues. Three coaches have joined the Rangers this season: Jordan Lesley, defensive coordinator from Northwestern Mississippi Community College; Josh Pruitt, quarterback and receiving coach from East Mississippi Community College; and Nick Dobler, defensive back coach who recently finished playing at Northeastern State In Oklahoma. “We have 93 guys in camp that are focused on the objective at hand and that is becoming a better football team every day,” Eckert said. “We are trying to find something that we’re all driven toward and that’s to be 1-0 Aug. 25.” The Rangers will open their home schedule playing Tyler Junior College 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. Admission is free for students with their KC ID.

The graduates were instilled with words of wisdom from the keynote speaker, Leah Gorman, who was recently named the KC director of development and executive director of the KC Foundation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

’Rettes welcome 36 freshmen to 72nd line BETSY FOREMAN Assistant Editor Thirty-six freshmen were chosen to carry the title of the 72nd Rangerette line. Each year approximately 85 to 100 young women vie for the highly sought-after freshman positions on the world-famous Rangerette collegiate dance/drill team line, a first-of-its-kind organization established in 1940. All Rangerette hopefuls attended pretraining and tryouts which lasted six days. Each person was required to learn one field high-kick routine, one field jazz routine and several other studio dance combinations to perform during tryouts. The newest additions to the Rangerette tradition in excellence and entertainment are listed by hometown as follows:

Positive ID: New rule a step forward N

o one likes being told what to do. We don’t like wearing a uncomfortable seat belt, but the law tells us to do it, so we buckle up. We aren’t fond of paying for a parking pass, but every campus requires a spirit-colored window sticker. And now, we’ve been told there’s one more thing we have to do: add a photo ID to our daily fashion ensemble. Wearing our KC IDs while on campus may at first cause a reaction of stubborn refusal. Our instincts beckon us to complain about a new regulation or dramatize the concept that wearing an ID is another form of control. However, if we take a moment to understand the reason for the new ID policy, logic may whisper a warning that this directive may be just what we all need. We must realize that an identification system is not a new concept. Many incoming freshmen transfer from high schools that already use IDs; therefore, is it really too much for a college to mandate the same system? Most people come to college in order to better themselves or to gain skills necessary for the “real world.” In today’s workplace, it is common for employees to wear IDs; therefore, wearing an ID is not a symbol of conformity or a label of imprisonment,

but rather a sign of progress. One primary reason IDs are becoming more popular is that IDs help create a secure environment for employees by acting as a visible security aid. In a time when personal security is a highly valuable resource, people are discovering that wearing IDs reduces problems by helping officials distinguish between employees and visitors. Another benefit of wearing an ID is that a sense of unity is created between workers. As a college student entering this type of working environment, shouldn’t we want to be prepared? KC’s new ID policy merely reinforces the same characteristics of many jobs; therefore, the policy’s benefits far outweigh its disadvantages. With the new policy, school unity, visitor assistance and campus safety will be enhanced. Besides what is so wrong with wearing a .180 oz. card around your neck or on the front of your shirt? If anything, the ID policy offers students another chance to express themselves by showcasing their personality. Don’t get too philosophical about how wearing an ID stunts your individuality. Have fun and get creative. Who knows? Your ID might be the next fashion statement of the season!

s I was staring at the clock on my computer screen, my mind anxiously searched for a topic for this column. It was 11:30 p.m. and I had a deadline to meet. I could barley keep my eyes open and all I wanted to do was go to sleep! My mind was blank and I was fresh out of story ideas. Feeling defeated, 9(*, I almost gave up, but then it hit me: +,-9$)*16 #[#P/!Hc# procrastination! #,H!*( Perfect! Throughout my 14 years of education, I’ve realized that procrastination is an art. Whether it’s how you handle the stress or how you deal with the unexpected problems of a project, you definitely need skill to pull off waiting until the last minute. Procrastination goes hand in hand with the ability to improvise. One night, for example, my friend and I were working on a math project that was due the next morning. We had been working for hours, planning, cutting, painting and gluing several pieces of cardboard together for a function box. We were almost done when we realized random writing covered the bottom of the box. We decided to paint it black. A simple solution, we thought. With half of the box painted, we realized we were all out of paint. Great! It was now past midnight and our patience was already asleep. We found some black paper and decided to glue it to the bottom of the box. Soon after, the glue ran out. We had already used the last of the clear tape. We were in panic mode. Our “responsible voice” reminded us if we had not waited until the last minute, we would have had plenty of time to make sure we had all of the supplies we needed. We pretended not to hear that voice, and rushed around the house looking for a sticky substitute. Finally, a dusty roll of black electrical tape did the trick. The project was done and we had 118 minutes before morning! Success! While this story is minor in comparison to some, it reminds me that procrastination is not just a personality trait, but a well-practiced art form. No matter how sincere the goal is to get something done early, the truth is that life just gets in the way. I’ve always admired the saying, “Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?” As long as sleep isn’t a requirement, perhaps there’s nothing really wrong with putting things off. Of course, my column may have been a bit more remarkable if I’d written it early, edited it, rewritten it, had someone critique it, edited it again and re-written it, but hey, I’m going to sleep now! ast year, I stood before the Registrar’s Office for my first-day college orientation, I was asked to choose a major. Since I had never thought that far ahead, I simply closed my eyes and randomly pointed my finger to a random selection on the paper. I decided that during my time in college I would branch out; and try something new, so I signed up for a reporting class that began in spring. I was a bit skeptical when I first started, more in my own abilities than in the class. As time progressed, I found that seeing my name printed next to a

A: Once you have registered for your classes, you can either take your receipt to the bookstore and they will direct you to the books you need or you can order your books online at the Kilgore website under the Attractions and Facilities tab. A: If you are a non-resident student, you should park anywhere there is an “S.” There is a limited number of parking spots. Watch where you park because the campus police will write tickets for parking in the wrong section. There is also KC designated parking off of Houston Street by the Region VII building. Parking stickers and vehicle registration papers can be picked up at the KC Police Station in the Devall Student Center. The first sticker is free and any additional stickers require a $5 fee. Q: What is a Ranger Card? What can I use it for? A: The Ranger Card is your official student ID. You can use it to gain entry to athletic events, purchase food through your meal plan, check out books from the library, etc. The total listing can be found on the Kilgore College website at Kilgore.edu under the New and Transfer Students tab. It can also be used as a debit MasterCard. You can obtain one at the campus police station.
