Cobblestone streets, nearby native forests, waterfalls, and an emeraldgreen ocean make up a paradisiacal and scenic combination of beauty and nature in this little city. At one time, the name of the city of Paraty was baptized by the local Tupy-Guarani tribe when they climbed down the mountain to fish in the ocean. Other extensive information about the origin of the name “Paraty,” in fact, didn’t change a bit; naturally, Paraty’s referrals have been incorporated ever since by the people as the name of this beautiful coastal village. n the 18th century, Paraty grew due to it being a strategically important port for the gold in Minas Gerais to be exported to Portugal. At this time, to avoid drawing the attention of pirates in nearby Rio de Janeiro, the Portuguese began to use Paraty as their best option from which to send the gold to Lisbon. During this time, the Portuguese monarchy, according to the guidelines of the court, sent the mined gold from the cities of Ouro Preto and others using the well known Royal Road

PARATY DE 1667
E

Route to export the gold and precious stones and circumvent the pirates. Paraty became a port as well as a sleep-over town for travelers. However, in the late 1800s, after the opening of the new inner road, Paraty was forgotten, so the village lacked business and commerce. Maybe, Paraty’s destiny as a tourist center is owed to its past and the opening of the new road, and that is the beauty of this small village. Today, Paraty remains a city stalled in time. The preservation of Paraty, untouched, is credited to the lack of what we call progress. It is a beautiful old city that has discovered its destiny as a tourism destination. Paraty, the colonial Village
P
araty is a colonial place, and it is considered a national monument due to its natural and architectural beauty surrounded by nature and rich rainforest vegetation. To visit Paraty is indeed to visit part of a paradise lost in time. It is a city well preserved and only explored by foot since cars are prohibited in the historic downtown, which is covered by cobblestone pavements. In the past, Paraty was home to more than 200 (sugar cane) distilleries producing rum. The city still produces one of the best rums in the country.

AFTER THE ROUTE TO EXPORT GOLD AND PRECIOUS STONES TO PORTUGAL DURING THE PERIOD OF BRAZILIAN COLONIZATION HAD BEEN ABANDONED, THE LACK OF BUSINESS CREATED ECONOMIC ISOLATION FOR THE VILLAGE. THAT ISOLATION IMMERSED PARATY LITTLE BY LITTLE INTO A FINANCIAL DISASTER.
After the route to export gold and precious stones to Portugal during the period of Brazilian colonization had been abandoned, the lack of business created economic isolation for the village. That isolation immersed Paraty little by little into a financial disaster. However, during the seventies, the city reinvented itself. After the opening of the highway Rio de Janeiro-Santos, finally, Paraty encountered its tourism destiny. The incredible conservation of this city and the advent of the new road opened a new venue to Brazilians and international tourism, resulting in an economic profit. The area is very beautiful with inner peace, nature, cobblestones, old and historical houses, forests, and the ocean, which are a mix of strong appeals when we talk about unique places. It is a “must see.” It has the perfect scenario for nature-lovers.
É como dizem os americanos “a must to see”.

I
n 1919, Hans Wilsdorf left England to settle in Geneva, where he founded Montres Rolex SA in 1920. The intention was to be closer to his supplier in Bienne. Geneva had an international reputation and watchmaking tradition. This crucial decision demonstrated Wilsdorf ’s “strategic thinking.” He was an active personality unrestricted by borders. The pocket watches to the wristwatch watches, a new era
H
ans Wilsdorf foresaw the wristwatch as being an everyday necessity of the future with a particular appeal to women. Back to 1905 when living in London, Hans Wilsdorf and his partner had founded the company Wilsdorf & Davis, which specialized in the distribution of wristwatches throughout Great Britain and the British Empire. Swiss partners produced some of the components, and among them was Maison Aegler in the city of Bienne, which later became Manufacture des Montres Rolex SA. At the time, they were the only manufacturers capable of producing the small, precise movements needed for his wristwatches. After incredible success and public acceptance, Rolex

E
Four years later, the prestigious Kew Observatory in England gave its first “Class A”—a distinction hitherto reserved for marine chronometers, thus fueling the realization that wristwatches and chronometric precision could go hand in hand. The challenge of waterproofing
T
he invention in 1926 of the “Oyster,” the first waterproof wristwatch in the world, proved entirely successful thanks to a case equipped with an ingenious system consisting of a screw-down bezel, case back, and winding crown. With the “Oyster” and its innovative waterproof case, Rolex firmly established its name into the watchmaking history. Besides his technical knowledge, Hans proved to be a marketing man.

ans Wilsdorf, in 1927, decided to prove the merits of the waterproof Rolex Oyster and to promote and make Rolex known worldwide. For that, Rolex hired Mercedes Gleitze, an Englishwoman who swam the English Channel for more than ten hours. To “hit” the world, Hans published a full-page advertisement in the front page of the Daily Mail, referencing the success of the watch with the title, “The Triumphant March of the Rolex Oyster Around the World.” The Testimony concept, a tool extensively used today in marketing started by this visionary men. n 1930, Rolex created the logo “crown” registered trademark on 1930. The same logo in the 1950’s was to identify the winding crown. After that, Rolex created watches of high prestige that were worn by influential people, which rapidly become classics of the Oyster Collection followed by the birth of Oyster Perpetual Datejust. Set among plants and trees also in the Mediterranean vernacular, the remarkable hilltop estate resembles a European village with the towered main house positioned as the central cathedral and the three surrounding guest houses as the other village buildings. Architect Julia Morgan had encountered the structures that inspired her designs for the San Simeon estate in the course of her travels, especially through Spain and Italy. Another source for the estate’s overall tone can perhaps be found in the international expositions that took place in the United States around the time the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth. The popularity of these World’s Fairs demonstrated a growing American interest in things cultural and international. In particular, The Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, which Hearst helped finance, may have influenced his plan for San Simeon. That style comes through clearly in the architecture and the art of Hearst Castle. The buildings’ exteriors and interiors were made up from different antique elements, mostly Spanish and Italian, augmented with work by Hearst craftsmen. INREVIEW MAGAZINE 2018
There is a vast quantity of fine and decorative art, representing numerous cultures and spanning centuries and continents. Everything was purchased with the intention that it was to be used and enjoyed. Hearst was a voracious collector with diverse interests and areas of acquisition.
Striving for this link was a common theme among newly wealthy American connoisseurs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The prestige associated with the acquisition of art has been an established fact since ancient times. Turn-of-the-century millionaires built mansions which housed and enhanced the status of their collections. J. P. Morgan, Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Andrew Mellon acquired works of art that were destined to become the core of the major art museums in the U. S. Many pieces were probably acquired with an eye to eventual incorporation into a museum environment, with more than a passing consideration for long-term preservation, protection and ultimate public display. Although William Randolph Hearst also provided a considerable amount of art for museums in the United States, through donation or sale, the San Simeon collection as a whole is intact, in situ, as it was at the time of Hearst’s residence. There is a vast quantity of fine and decorative art, representing numerous cultures and spanning centuries and continents. Everything was purchased with the intention that it was to be used and enjoyed. Hearst was a voracious collector with diverse interests and areas of acquisition. The high quality of the fine art at San Simeon is echoed by the magnificent collection of textiles. Oriental carpets, many inherited from Hearst’s mother, cover floors and are used as decorative hangings. Renaissance vestments ¬ copes and chasubles ¬ adorn the walls. Altar frontals are displayed hanging above fireplaces, beds and other large pieces of furniture. It is perhaps in the furniture collection, mostly sixteenthand seventeenth-century Spanish and Italian, that the extent of William Randolph Hearst’s buying fervor is most apparent. The size of the estate necessitated the purchase of large numbers of objects to furnish all the rooms: chairs, tables, beds, chests, chests of drawers and armoires. As a result, there are numerous examples of many types of objects. Instead of the four or five seventeenth-century Spanish tables which might be found in many museums, at San Simeon there are forty-five, along with comparable numbers of chairs and chests. This multiplicity has proved an invaluable resource for research into manufacturing techniques and design. In 1958, Hearst Castle was given to the State of California by the Hearst Corporation. It is today administered by California’s Department of Parks & Recreation as an historic house museum, fulfilling the estate’s potential envisioned by William Randolph Hearst when, as early as 1927, he made the statement: “I see no reason why the ranch should not be a museum of the best things that I can secure.” n

n the closest finish in race history, Dongfeng Race Team has won the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18. Skipper Charles Caudrelier led his team to victory in the final leg of the race, a 970-mile sprint from Gothenburg, Sweden to The Hague. Incredibly, it marked the first leg win for the team and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Three teams started Leg 11 of the race on Thursday in a dead heat on the overall leaderboard. The finishing order between MAPFRE, Team Brunel and Dongfeng Race Team at The Hague would determine their place on the overall race podium. Each of those three teams led at various points on the leg and had their opportunities to grab the prize. But it was Caudrelier and his team that made a bold call on Saturday evening to take a coastal route to the

finish, pinned against the shoreline by a series of Exclusion Zones. It hurt them in the short term as they tumbled down the leaderboard. By Sunday morning, with less than 100 miles left to race, weather routing projections had the top teams finishing within minutes of each other. None had been able to break-away, despite the significant splits on the race course. At 15:22:32 UTC, it was Dongfeng Race Team, flying in down the coast from the north to win the leg, and the race. It was the closest finish in the 45-year history of the race and the first win for a Chinese-flagged team. MAPFRE was projected to finish second on the overall leaderboard with Team Brunel in position to earn third on the final race podium. n

JARED LANG
JARED LANG,
the Jeunesse Dorée from Montreal, is making headlines in Miami.
H
e is a young entrepreneur and a businessman. Being the third generation in the fashion business, Jared Lang didn’t want to follow in his parents’ industry, and at a very young age, entrepreneurship was running wild in his blood. Together with a few friends, they started to build up a fashion brand back in Montreal, but the business agreement didn’t go further. Jared then turned to the Web. There, he sold products, making the necessary backup to support his intention to fly higher. His dream was to build his brand. Then is when Jared Lang became a fashion and style reference for the fit, young guy. The colorful fabric, style design, and sophistication of Jared’s brand are hitting the Miami market by storm. It takes time to build a brand, but it didn’t take long for the creative brain behind this brand, Jared, the Jeneusse Dorée from Montreal. Jared’s design is preferred by the up-to-date, well-dressed “Miamians.” It is a “must” for “fit” persons, and Miami has the perfect environment. Look around Lincoln Road or South Beach, and you’ll understand the spirit of stylish people. A town visited by people from everywhere, Miami is, like they say, full of millennials. The Sunshine State was the location of choice for Jared. After his decision to leave Montreal, Jared established himself in our city, and here he found the perfect town for his unique brand. Because he travels there twice per year, Italy, Paris, and Turkey are where Jared Lang’s entire line is produced to perfection. His inspiration indeed comes from each of his trips. With no margin of error, Italy and Paris always provide the latest in fashion, fabrics, and trends in this industry. The leather apparel comes entirely from Turkey, a country well-known and rich in expertise, which produces high-end fashion with all kinds of leather. In fact, Turkey produces some of the best leathers in the world. The Jared Lang brand can be found in most upscale department stores like Nordstrom, Neumann Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave, and now, also, in the recently opened Jared Lang store in Aventura Mall. For a brand launched only nine years ago, it is an incredible entry to any market. Jared himself believes that licensing will be one of his next steps for his brand to grow worldwide. Neighboring in the newest Aventura Mall and its recently opened building that houses Gucci, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton, Jared Lang is making waves among the young and beautiful millennials! n
