BUILDING KNOWLEDGE The stories behind celebrity architects paint a picture of how they choose their projects, giving a glimpse into why they’re the hottest stars in Miami. By Irene Moore
R
eal estate development in Miami has exploded over the past few years, with international “starchitects” turning the Magic City’s skyline into a hit list of cutting-edge architecture. These starchitects — architects whose celebrity and critical acclaim have catapulted them into the architectural stratosphere — are able to get the green light on large developments, thus helping to obtain financing with their famous monikers attached. Pritzker Prize — the international award given annually to recognize the contributions of a living architect — winners Herzog and de Meuron turned the architectural establishment on its ear back in 2010 with 1111 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, the parking-garage-retail complex that resembled a gigantic deck of cards. They followed it up with widely heralded Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Similarly, Frank Gehry, another Pritzker winner, enlivened Miami’s cultural scene with the opening of the New World Center in 2011 — a stylish new home for the New World Symphony. Now Gehry is in Miami again, transforming the former Bacardi complex on Biscayne Boulevard into a campus for the National YoungArts Foundation. Pritzker-winning Rem

STARCHITECTURE: SCENES, ACTORS AND SPECTACLES IN CONTEMPORARY CITIES by Davide Ponzini and Michele Nastasi (Umberto Allemandi & Co, $548, Amazon, 2011). Internationally renowned architects are featured here in public debates, both as designers of dramatically striking urban artifacts, as well as for urban regeneration projects. This book provides in-depth analyses of more than twenty architectural projects in Bilbao, Abu Dhabi, Paris, New York City, and on the Vitra Campus — a unique architectural ensemble in Weil am Rhein in Germany, a suburb of Basel, Switzerland — which has buildings designed by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Herzog & de Meuron, among others. FRANK GEHRY (Random House, $65, March 5, 2015). This lavish monograph by Frederic Migayrou and Aurélien Lemonier features fifty of Gehry’s most important projects, a full range of the architect’s work from the past six decades. The book explores how Gehry overcame technological setbacks and critical backlash to become one of the very few architects in history to be respected by both critics and the general public. Arranged chronologically, the book follows the arc of Gehry’s career, from his early residential projects through the work on which his studio is currently focused — mainly public and cultural facilities.

Koolhaas’ firm, OMA, designed another arts-and-culture project — the Faena Center, in the starchitect-studded new arts/entertainment/residential neighborhood, the Faena District in Miami Beach. First female Pritzker honoree, Zaha Hadid, is building the futuristic One Thousand Museum, downtown Miami’s hottest new condo tower, across from the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Fellow Pritzker Prize winner Lord Norman Foster and his firm, Foster + Partners, have been busy designing Faena House, a luxurious 24-story residential condominium in the Faena District, where the penthouse has already pre-sold for a cool $60 million. Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, who has achieved a level of critical acclaim — rare for someone so young in this industry — recently bid against his former boss, Rem Koolhaas, to spearhead the Miami Beach Convention Center’s redevelopment. Instead, he won the coveted design competition for the prestigious Grove-at-Grand-Bay condominiums in Coconut Grove. The following books, by and about today’s starchitects, will enliven your interest about what’s going on in this exalted world.

ELEMENTS BY REM KOOLHAUS (Rizzoli, $190, boxed set of 15 paperbacks, April 16, 2012). Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international architectural avant-garde since the 1970s. He founded OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) in Rotterdam in 1975, together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. His combination of architecture, urban planning, research, and writing has solidified his starchitect status. Since 1995, Koolhaas has been a professor at Harvard University, where he leads Project on the City, a student-based research program that studies different issues affecting the urban condition. Elements was compiled with Koolhaas’ research and editorial department, AMO, in collaboration with the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and includes contributions by several professors, architects, and urban developers. The collection of 15 books was launched at the 2014 Venice Biennale. HADID COMPLETE WORKS 1979-2013 by Philip Jodidio (Taschen, $175, Dec. 15, 2013). Philip Jodidio is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on architecture. Zaha Hadid, the world’s most famous female architect, is the controversial architect whose futuristic designs rank among the most audacious in the world of architecture. In this large monograph, Jodidio covers Hadid’s complete works to date, showing the evolution of her career with in-depth texts, spectacular photos, and her own drawings. The Serpentine Sackler Gallery in London and the New National Stadium of Japan, venue of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, are both published in this monograph for the first time. HERZOG & DE MEURON NATURAL HISTORY (Lars Müller Publishers, $155, 2005). Basel-based architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were both born in Basel, attended the same schools, and formed a partnership in 1978. Natural History explores how their work challenges boundaries between architecture and art, both in the present and past. It makes the reader think about how art, history, materials, and cultural and industrial changes interact with architecture. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects contributed essays to the work. BIG by Bjarke Ingels (Idea Books, Amsterdam, $500, 2010). The internationally renowned Danish architect is the founder and creative partner of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) with offices in Copenhagen and New York. Ingels is most known for buildings with sloped lines and designs shaped to fit into their surroundings. His designs defy traditional architecture, combining playfulness with practicality He also often incorporates sustainable and sociological concepts into his designs. This monograph is a good starting point to explore 60 of Ingels’ earlier projects such as the Danish Expo Pavilion, Helsingor Psychiatric Hospital, Sjakket Youth Centre, the Faroe Islands Education Centre, Arlanda Airport Hotel, and the Shenzhen International Energy Mansion. ne of horology’s most exquisite mechanisms is the tourbillon. Created 200 years ago to negate gravity’s slowing effects on mechanical watches’ accuracy, it has become one of the hottest categories in fine watchmaking today. “It isn’t surprising that tourbillon watches remain successful,” says Jean-Daniel Pasche, president of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. Research shows “consumers remain very interested in traditional mechanical watches, (and that) both mechanical and ‘smart’ watches can develop (on) parallel tracks. They don’t exclude each other.” Tourbillon timepieces’ ongoing popularity is due to many factors, Pasche says, such as the fascination with the complex mechanism, its history — going back to Abraham Breguet, the tourbillon’s inventor — and Swiss watchmaking. And, because the tiny handcrafted “complication” — a function beyond simple hours, minutes, and seconds — is one of the most challenging to make, a tourbillion has become a display of watchmaker expertise and creativity, captivating many. The visual splendor of the tourbillon, to be able to be seen through an opening on the dial or a skeleton dial, adds to its luxury appeal. Fascinating, too, is the growing variety of splendidly designed timepieces with tourbillons. A tourbillon is not really essential now for mechanical watch accuracy. However, tourbillon timepieces, today, are less traditional in design, more innovative and indeed, unconventional in their visual appearance, which many watch aficionados now prize. A variety of tourbillons were on display in March at Baselworld 2016, the globe’s most important and influential watch show, in the charming Swiss stadt of Basel. Here are a few of these intriguing, intricately handcrafted luxury timepieces. ANGELUS calls its U20 Ultra-Skeleton Tourbillon “a beautiful mechanical haute horlogerie sculpture.” With streamlined design and made entirely of lightweight sapphire, carbon, and titanium, it’s also at watchmaking’s cuttingedge. Having no dial, but having a sapphirecrystal dome, allows full view of the 3-D architecture of the movement, which seems to float in the case. The cage of the one-minute flying tourbillon is hand-chamfered and handpolished. The 42mm watch has a 90-hour power reserve. 18 pieces. US $71,950. angelus-watches.com
ARMIN STROM’S TOURBILLON SKELETON EARTH, in black PVD-treated stainless steel, spotlights its technical prowess through total skeletoniziation of its inner workings, a specialty of the watchmaker. Skeletonization is created by carving away much of the metal from the movement so the wearer can view the beauty of the elaborate gears and wheels. A watchmaker can spend countless hours whittling away as much as 70 percent of the metal — quite a feat of craftsmanship because of the precious nature of creating the detail. The movement’s layered construction and skeletonizing the tourbillon — a technical challenge — is also impressive. The tourbillon’s constant rotation and the movement’s double-going barrel are visible as the watch is wound. 100 pieces. US $86,700. arminstrom.com ARTYA’S CUMBERE TOURBILLON, by watchmaker Yvan Arpa, is one of the season’s most avant-garde timepieces. The unique watch is shaped like a guitar, with a crown like a guitar tuning peg. Its case is stainless steel with black PVD and the brand’s own pink-gold alloy. Sapphire crystals front and back display the baguette-type mechanical movement, with 100-hour power reserve. Its 60-second flying tourbillon is at “6,” below the watch’s embossed skullsand-bones “X” structure. With haute horlogerie details like hand-beveling and artisan-style aging of the skull and bone engravings, the timepiece is what happens “when art meets luxury,” says the brand. The unique watch’s caseback is hand-engraved. US $185,000. artya.com

BELL & ROSS’S BR-X1 CHRONOGRAPH TOURBILLON SKELETON MONO-PUSHER — one button for all chrono functions , says the brand — is an “alliance of haute horologie with professional instrumentation,” the aeronautical inspiration for which Bell & Ross is known. This the first time in the brand’s history that Bell & Ross has released a tourbillon. The 45mm timepiece, with unique casing and sapphire-crystal caseback, is water resistant to 330 ft., has a four-day power-reserve indicator at 9 o’clock, mono-pusher and 30-minute chrono counter at 10 o’clock, and 60-second counter at 2 o’clock. The tourbillion is at 6 o’clock. Its grey-tinted sapphirecrystal dial has metal appliqué indices; its metal hands are skeletonized. In titanium or 18k rose gold, with or without diamond bezel. 20 pieces each. $163,000 titanium ($213,000 with diamond bezel); $180,000 gold ($238,000 with diamond bezel). bellross.com BULGARI’S elegant, ultra-modern OCTO ULTRANERO FINISSIMO TOURBILLON combines stylish Italian design with Swiss watchmaking’s technical expertise. The black DLC treatment — “ultranero” means “very black” — of the titanium case and the black crocodile strap effectively counterpoint the pink-gold hands, hour indices, and crown. Inside the 40mm octagonal case with round lacquered dial is the world’s thinnest, record-setting movement with a flying tourbillon — 1.95mm thick, with tourbillon cage mounted on tiny ball bearings — a Bulgari exclusive. The timepiece has a 52hour power reserve and water-resistance to 100 ft. US $115,000. bulgari.com C A B E S TA N ’ S TRIPLE AXIS TOURBILLON mixes traditional watchmaking, avant-garde design, high-end mechanics, and innovation. Created by watchmaker Eric Coudray, its design is inspired by a catamaran’s sleek lines. The hand-polished sapphire tube case is sealed by two sapphire, brushed-titanium windows. The multi-level movement has 1,044 visible parts — all polished and finished by hand — and a tiny triple-axis flying tourbillon, whose three cages rotate at different speeds. The timepiece has a 50-hour power reserve and water-resistance to 100 ft. In 18-karat pink, yellow, or white gold, titanium or platinum. 135 pieces. More than 150,000 Swiss francs. cabestan.ch
OKLETEY’S MERRY GO ROUND — so called because of the turning tourbillon seen through a dial aperture—is a tribute to Mother Nature, says the brand. The design of the dial’s skeletonized corners is inspired by the giraffes of Africa’s savanna. Its rectangular steel case black PVD treatment counterbalances the silver dial, with a central circle with a guilloché motif. The one-minute flying tourbillon is seen at 6 o’clock, the 100-hour power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock, and the movement’s differential gear system window at 11 o’clock. The watch case has sapphire crystals front and back and water-resistance to 100 ft. Limited series with stainless steel, 18k rosegold and platinum models. US $120,000. okletey.com

TAG HEUER’S Carrera Heuer-02T Black Phantom incorporates a chronograph, tachymeter, and flying tourbillon — all designed, developed, and produced entirely by the Swiss luxury brand. For it, TAG Heuer fashioned a new case in black Grade 5 titanium, made from 12 separate modular parts. Inside is the brand’s newest caliber, the Heuer02T chronograph movement, a Swiss-certified chronometer. It uses the skeletonized design of new Carrera watches, with skeleton bridges, openworked hour circle, geometric bridges, skeleton dial, silver hands, and counters. The 45mm watch has a 65-hour power reserve, sapphire crystals front and back, and water-resistance to 330 ft. 250 pieces.US $21,000. Tagheuer.com

ULYSSE NARDIN’S exotic 44mm ROYA L P Y T H O N S K E L E TO N TOURBILLON timepiece is an eye-catching beauty. Its 18k rose-gold case encompasses the exposed inner workings — the in-house movement’s maze of individual parts, bridges, and flying tourbillon — which seem less like mechanics and more like art. The movement’s light-weight silicium balance spring, anchor, and escapement need no lubrication and are resistant to conditions like the cold or magnetisim, meaning less servicing and longer life for the watch. The inside of the bezel features hand-painted python motifs, as do the movement’s hand-painted bridges, also dotted with skillfully set tiny rubies, exhibiting Ulysse Nardin’s métiers d’art expertise. Completing the composition is the python snakeskin strap. The timepiece has sapphire crystals, front and back, and water-resistance to 100 ft. Limited series of 18 pieces. CEO Jean Christophe Babin talks about what has kept the revered jewelry brand’s iconic status intact. By Michelle F. Solomon
B
vlgari CEO Jean Christophe Babin scans the room upon arrival at Fort Lauderdale’s NSU Art Museum in February. It’s the opening reception sponsored by Bvlgari, and the charismatic leader of the Italian jewelry brand is cordially making his way through the crowd. However, you can tell his steps are determined to get to his ultimate destination — the exhibition in another area, away from the cocktails and conversation, and it is the star of the show. It’s the first time that “Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968” is on U.S. soil. Highlighted in beautiful showcases throughout the exhibit are 18 selected works brought from Bvlgari’s Heritage Collection, which is housed in Rome on the second floor of the flagship on in Via dei Condotti. There are 760 pieces in the collection, an anthology of splendid, one-ofa-kind pieces that recount the evolution of Bvlgari style from 1884 to today. The House has bought back some pieces, which include seven from Elizabeth Taylor’s exquisite collection that were purchased by the House at a 2011 Christie’s sale. (Remember the famous quote by Richard Burton? — “The only word Liz knows in Italian is Bvlgari.”) There’s a call to action on its website searching for owners who may want to part with some of their own jewels. “In this way, the precious pieces will become stars of a story still to be told — a tale of art, beauty, and Italian excellence,” the website quotes. Babin, who had been president and CEO of watch brand Tag Heuer since 2000, took over the job at Bvlgari in 2013. CEO Michael Burke was sent to Louis Vuitton, thereby leaving a vacancy. Both Tag Heuer and Bvlgari are part of the LVMH group. “I joined a strong brand with a strong foundation,” says Babin during our one-on-one interview, not too far from a showcase that holds one of the classic Blvgari “bib” necklaces, a stunning mix of precious cabochons in unusual color combinations. He calls them “lively Bvlgari signature pieces because they combine several unexpected colored gemstones, which for me are so strong and bright.” CONNECTION TO THE PAST There’s a reason, he says, that Bvlgari invests time and money in buying back some of its most coveted jewelry. Babin says discovering, purchasing, and then displaying the collection is “living evidence that what Bvlgari crafts today has a strong connection to what we created yesterday.” For those who buy Bvlgari, it provides a “lifetime warranty that, besides the perfect gems and quality of the metals, the styles — even though they evolve — remain precious and timeless.” While Babin says there isn’t a way to talk about the brand’s present without equally talking about its past, he is excited about the new modernity of Bvlgari’s justintroduced collections that “reinterpret historical shapes in a very modern way. We honor our tradition with modernity.” Jean Christophe Babin

In Geneva, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in January, the brand debuted three new jewelry watch collections, including its reimagining of its classic Serpenti with Serpenti Incantati — translation: “enchanted snakes.” “For the first time, we’ve introduced a snake to be in a round shape — it’s quite daring.” The original Serpenti encircled the wrist as a bracelet. “On one hand, you pay tribute to your origins with a design like this, but then, you envision the future.” TODAY’S BVLGARI WOMAN The woman the brand is appealing to today is only slightly different than the woman who made Bvlgari a household name in the 1950s and ’60s. “In that time period, we were daring and bold and talking to a strong woman. In those days, few women were working, and so we were really appealing to those strong women who were emerging from the movie community and the business community. Nowadays, the proposal is much broader.” Buyers then were typically a husband or boyfriend who was gifting a woman. Now, women with their own money and power choose the jewelry for themselves. Babin’s assessment: “When your boyfriend or husband buys you a gift, it is conventional because they are afraid of making a mistake. When it is for yourself, you know exactly what you want.” He speaks frequently of that modernity moving forward with Bvlgari and the fact that luxury jewelry will never go out of style. “It has been the most consistent luxury indulgence in the last four million years.” The CEO has quite a job, and he says he never really envisioned where his career would take him. “I have been very lucky that I have had very interesting proposals,” says Babin, who was born in France and possesses dual French and Italian citizenships. He started his career in 1983 in sales and marketing positions — at Procter & Gamble in France and at Benckiser and Henkel in Italy. With Bvlgari, he has reached the height of luxury. There are photos of the charismatic Babin with Heidi Klum on the red carpet at amfAR Milano 2014, with Uma Thurman, dripping in $2 million worth of Bvlgari at the House’s 130th anniversary celebration, and with Eric Bana, who wears the same Finissimo Octo timepiece that I notice Babin has tucked under his tuxedo sleeve. He shares his strategy from “day one” at Bvlgari and the same idea, most likely, he’s used throughout his ascent in business. “It’s like diving. You have to go deep and hold your breath, shut your mouth, and just absorb to understand. Then you get to the surface and you start to figure out what, in this case, you can bring to a brand that has such a history.” TM

STELLAR EVENING
BELLISSIMA!
The 23rd Annual Gala at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden twinkled with this year’s theme “Starry, Starry Night.” The evening began with a cocktail reception and a silent auction in the new Adam R. Rose and Peter R. McQuillan Arts Center, then continued at the Lakeside Marquee, which was bathed in celestial midnight-blue light and star ceiling lights. Trees wrapped in white orchids reflected the garden atmosphere. The event was co-chaired by Swanee DiMare and Frances Sevilla-Sacasa, with Philanthropic Chair Joyce Burns. Board of Trustees President Bruce Greer welcomed guests and thanked this year’s sponsors — Paul and Swanee DiMare, Tony and Joyce Burns, Lou and Mary Jean Risi, Bunny Bastian, Codina Partners, and Kenneth O’Keefe and Jason Stephens. A longtime benefactor of Fairchild, Angela Whitman, was honored for her support of the Garden’s educational endeavors.
Bvlgari Roma celebrated the opening of the exhibit Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945–1968 with a celebratory cocktail party at the Bvlgari Bal Harbour Shops Boutique. The exhibit is on display at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale. For the Bal Harbour party, Bvlgari exhibited a special display of one-of-a-kind and limited-issue Bvlgari jewels, including pieces from the renowned Serpenti and Giardini collections. The party, with 150 invited guests, was hosted by: Daniel Paltridge, president, Bvlgari North America; Stefano Tonchi, co-curator and editor-in-chief of W Magazine; and Bonnie Clearwater, NSU Art Museum director and chief curator. The museum exhibition features extraordinary Bvlgari designs from this pivotal period that helped define the history of jewelry and garments, along with film, artwork, and textiles that show the influence of Italy on fashion and culture.

DAVID GRUTMAN By Larsa Pippen
I
first met David Grutman years ago on a summer yacht trip when celebrating a mutual friend’s birthday. In addition to having many friends in common, we both shared an affinity for exotic cars, luxury boats, fine dining, and Miami’s nightlife. He’s a nightlife wunderkind and founded two of Miami Beach’s hottest clubs — LIV and Story. David has a style that makes everyone feel at ease, and he’s one of the hardest-working guys I know. He’s also truly an amazing person. In the middle of a busy workday, David invited Trillionaire magazine’s team — of which I am now a part as columnist — into his new restaurant Komodo, a three-level, indoor-outdoor restaurant in Brickell. So of course, the first question I had to ask was: “David, what made you want to open a restaurant?” His response? “Being who I am in the nightlife industry, it’s the next gradual step. I have a nightclub in Sun Life Stadium — LIV Sun Life — where the Dolphins play. And this uses the same kind of energy and fundamentals. For me, it’s all about hospitality; so this is just an extension of my brand.” We continued. LP: Why open Komodo in Brickell and not Miami Beach? DG: “A lot of the crowd for LIV and Story come from the Brickell and Coral Gables area. And, I feel for the first time in Miami’s history, there’s an urban part to Miami and Brickell is it. I don’t want to follow what everyone else is doing. I set my own trends; so I wanted to be on the forefront of this scene, and I wanted to be one of the pioneers in Brickell.” LP: The restaurant is huge! Two levels of indoor dining, plus outdoor space. “PEOPLE ARE USED DG: “I couldn’t do a small, tiny restaurant in a shopping plaza. People are used to ‘over TO ‘OVER THE TOP’ the top’ when they hear my name. It has to be big and glamorous with high energy WHEN THEY HEAR and a large volume — a kind of space like MY NAME. IT HAS Komodo.” LP: People think they know you, but TO BE BIG AND they don’t really know who you are. Is there GLAMOROUS WITH something you could tell me that people might not know? HIGH ENERGY AND DG: “Well, I’m getting married at the end of April.” LARGE VOLUME.” LP: Right, you proposed to Isabela 38 TRILLIONAIRE
(Rangel) in front of a wall you had painted by a team of artists in Wynwood. So, what else don’t people know about you? DG: “In the restaurant business, people start working at 1 in the afternoon, but I’m at work at 9 or 10 because I get a whole other half day in by doing that. I feel like I want to lead by example. I want my team to see that I work as hard as they do.” LP: Are you from Miami? DG: “Nope. I’m from Naples, Fla., where it’s all retirees... the other coast of Florida. I’m really good at shuffleboard.” LP: So what’s made your brands like LIV and Story so successful? DG: “It’s all about the content. People get sick of being in the same space over and over. So you need to change the production so that people feel like they are coming to a new event every night. Some places are either deejayfocused or celebrity-focused or production-focused, but we mix it all together, and we give people an experience they aren’t going to get up the block or down the street. We’re all selling the same vodka and the same champagne, but it’s the experiences that we’re giving people that sets us apart.” LP: What’s the average amount someone spends in your clubs? DG: “Hard to say. We have guys spending $125,000 to $350,000 on a pernight basis. But then we have guys who spend 100 plus, 100 plus, 100 plus. It just depends on how strong the dollar is, to tell you the truth.” LP: I feel like every celebrity who comes to Miami has to come to LIV and Story. I don’t think they go anywhere else. DG: “We hope it’s on every to-do list. Every bucket list. When you come to Miami, you look for iconic brands like Joe’s Stone Crab and Fontainebleau. And hopefully, LIV is becoming that brand.” LP: When you are someone who has done such amazing things and has such a reputation, I’m sure you’re always setting the bar higher for yourself. So what is next? DG: “Hotels will be the next lifestyle brand, and I think we’ll open a few more Komodos before that happens.” LP: In New York? DG: “Actually, people are calling from Qatar, Paris, Los Angeles; so we’ll see. But for me to get on a plane to go to another city, I need to have multiple stuff there because I don’t want to fly there for just one thing. Like in Paris, they wanted me to take over the Buddha-Bar space to do a Komodo restaurant, but I want to do Komodo and LIV and a hotel — have a number of different brands; that would be great.” TM

Building a
MASTERPIECE
Joseph Leone had a vision for a chef d’oeuvre that would rival Versailles. Meet the developer behind Le Palais Royal. By Michelle F. Solomon
T
o call Joseph Leone a visionary is an understatement. The jewelry-designer-turned-developer doesn’t just have big ideas. His larger-than-life imagination and creativity encompasses, as its most notable distinction, perfection. During a walk through of the French-inspired, Beaux Arts masterpiece, Le Palais Royal in Hillsboro Beach, Leone points out every detail — from the $6 million in gold leafing that adorns everything from ceilings to the front entrance’s wrought iron gate to the first IMAX screening room to be installed in a private residence in the world. There are other one-of-a-kind amenities that make this palace not just a piece of property, but a true work of art. The chef d’oeuvre has received lots of worldwide media attention for its multi-million dollar price tag, making it one of the most expensive listings in America. Superyacht My Seanna
60 TRILLIONAIRE
Born in Bologna, Italy, Leone grew up in France the son of a tailor. Young Joseph would go to his father’s shop— first in Italy, then in southern France — where he was creating men’s suits. He says his eye for detail and creative fashion sense is inherited from his father, while his business savvy comes from his mother’s side. “My (maternal) grandfather was a big businessman and on my father’s side, they were in the fashion business. I think this is what I believe is what makes me very different from most people — I have two parts of the brain that work together.” Leone says that he has realized through the years that “it is very difficult for businessmen to be creative, and it’s the same thing for designers — it is tough for them to be good in business.” But he has an equal gift for both. When he was 23 years old, he started his own high-fashion jewelry design and manufacturing company in Marseille, working with the biggest names in French haute couture, such as Jean Patou, Rochas, Celine, and Annick Goutal. He decided to go into business designing for some of the biggest names in France. “I was designing for all the large companies and the fashion industry in Paris. I was living in Marseilles, but I would spend the week in Paris because that’s where fashion was,” says Leone. It was the mid to late 1980s and it was, as Leone says, the time to be involved in the fashion business in Europe. “This was the era. Fashion was high and creative. You had to be creative and be different. The more creative you were, the more successful you would become,” he says with an upbeat confidence. He found it to be an unforgettable time to be an entrepreneur, working with the best designers in France and the best designers in fashion . By the early 1990s, the entrepreneur was ready to make a move and broaden his horizons by introducing his creations to a wider audience. He arrived in New York, where he forged relationships with department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.
“Joseph Leone has challenged everyone involved to create this masterpiece.” The yacht’s owner had wanted to do something with a 13,000-square-foot home he had on the ocean. “He said, ‘I want to build something there that is different,’ so I immediately began working on a design,” Leone recalls. His European roots had Leone imagining something that would be built in the United States that hadn’t been seen before. “This would be like a castle you would find in Europe.” It would be an American version of Versailles “like nothing anywhere in the United States.” For two years, he worked on the design and engineering. During that time, the house next door went up for sale. “The land was fantastic. I advised him to buy the house next door because the land would be a plus for the new masterpiece we were building.” The original 2.8 acres on Hillsboro Mile became almost 5 acres of prime property. “We tore both houses down and began building Le Palais Royal.” He says that he worked on every step of the project as if he was creating a piece of jewelry. “Everything was thinking first, then analyzing second, then we would build.” The actual construction began in 2009, and Leone expects the palace on the sea to be finished by July 2016. Coastal Construction Group worked with Leone on the project. Sean Murphy, co-president of Coastal, says Le Palais Royal has evolved into one of the most complex and extraordinary homes Coastal has ever built. “Joseph Leone’s vision to create such a unique property with fountains, pools, stone, mosaics, and ornate details throughout are so extraordinary and complicated that it really pushes the envelope for luxury residential construction. He has challenged everyone involved to create this masterpiece.” TM
One day, while at a jewelry show, he had a sense that another challenge was awaiting him. It was 2004, and he had decided that he had done everything he could do in the jewelry business. “I had sold to every big department store in the world; I had designed for the biggest brands; I had been everywhere in the world.” He began talking to a businessman in attendance and the two hit it off and became friends. The initial project that Leone took on for the man — who would become not only a friend, but a client — was to find him a yacht. After searching, he purchased a 160-foot yacht for the businessman, a private person whose identity Leone keeps anonymous. “We tried to charter it for a little while when we bought it. It was a good boat for entertaining corporate clients.” But Leone, who was used to yachts that were made for cruising San Tropez, Cannes, and the French coast, thought the boat was too enclosed. “There was no open deck.” So rather than sell the yacht and purchase one with more outdoor space, Leone decided the yacht should be extended 25 feet. “When I told the people in the yacht industry my plans for the yacht, they started laughing and told me I was crazy. They said it was impossible.” It took 18 months and $20 million to rebuild the boat. Leone redesigned the boat by cutting off the back of the vessel to add a larger deck space that is basically a beach club aboard the yacht. The sundeck also doubles as a helicopter pad, and Leone designed the yacht’s interiors, too, and added all new state-of-the-art technology, including audio and visual systems to accommodate an outdoor movie theater. “This way, you can watch movies under the stars.” My Seanna — named for the owner’s daughter — was a finalist at the coveted 2015 World Superyacht Awards in Amsterdam. The yacht was the beginning and asserted what Leone already knew. He could take his creative skills, merge them with his business sense and eye for detail, and create “jewels” in different ways.

CASTLE on the BEACH
Inspired by the Palace of Versailles, developer Joseph Leone builds a Beaux Arts mansion that is pure perfection down to the smallest detail. By Michelle F. Solomon
T
he 60,000-square-foot Beaux Arts mansion, Le Palais Royal, is the closest to a modern castle that America has seen in quite some time. Developer and designer Joseph Leone, who grew up in Italy and France, created the Hillsboro Beach, Fla., expanse with the Palace of Versailles and other great European castles in mind. As he walks through the impressive space, the visionary knows every square foot down to each detail and precisely what has gone into each crevice. “Every room has a different flavor. Every room is like a precious jewel,” says Leone, who previously was a jewelry designer and whose perfection in creating each detail in Palais Royal makes the 11-bedroom, 18-bathroom house a masterpiece. Influence is French and Italian flavors, says the designer. “I wanted to create a castle,” he says, “but I didn’t want it to have a feeling of a cold castle. Here, you can live in a beautiful castle with all the comforts of modern technology. There is no cold feeling either; there is warmth because of how Palais Royal was built and the location,” he says. Warm feeling, indeed. Le Palais Royal is on almost five actres of pristine ocean and beach in Hillsboro Beach and takes advantage of the beauty and tranquility of the splendid setting. The property features almost 500 feet of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and a 492-foot double dock on the Intracoastal waterway. There are more than a few one-of-a-kinds that Leone has ensured to make this property unlike any other. More than a half a million sheets (or leaves) of genuine gold leaf was used throughout the house with some of the most spectacular displays of the leafing found on the 22-carat gold entrance gate to the home and the 26-foot fountain plated in gold leaf. The process of leafing is an intensive craft and it took twelve artisans from France, who specialize in the application of gold leaf, to painstakingly apply the leafing at Le Palais Royal. “They worked close to non-stop for over six months just on that,” says Leone.
“Every room has a different flavor. Every room is like a precious jewel.”
62 TRILLIONAIRE
The $2-million marble staircase with steel iron railings took two years to complete. If something was delivered less than perfect or workmanship was less than 100 percent, Leone would have it done over or send it back. Mahogany doors from Brazil showed up with different colorizations or blemishes from the natural wood. Leone had wood sourced over and over, some from South Africa, until each door’s surface matched one another exactly. This was the type of detail that makes the property priceless, he attests. “It was a challenge for everyone, but you feel the quality when you walk through the property — the craftsmanship and attention, it’s all there.” The home office was inspired to resemble the French Presidents office at the Élysée Palace in France and an underground showroom garage houses 30 cars. A chandelier in the main lobby has been outfitted with a motorized pulley that can be raised and lowered for cleaning. The chandelier at 8 feet wide and 5 feet tall, used to grace an Austrian church and was obtained through an auction in London. In total, there are 320 sources of decorative lighting, which include sconces, and a variety of chandeliers in every room of the palace. Electrical outlets and air conditioning vents are nowhere to be seen — hidden from view. Plumbing pipes were wrapped in aluminium and a cast to ensure there was no noise from water running through the house “Everything has been soundproofed. Even the air conditioning, the plumbing system and rain evacuation,” which means rainwater will never be heard in the house as it drips through gutters. A special light projector that is installed in the finest museums has sensors to light up artwork throughout the home, so that each work of art looks as if it’s backlit. Le Palais Royal also has the first private IMAX in-home theater in the world with a 15 foot by 23 foot screen and seating for 18 people. The developer said he wanted to build something to share with America the way the French gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States. “The way in which this Palais was built, it will last forever,” he says. RIVERFRONT RENAISSANCE
Riva leads the charge as Fort Lauderdale fills the void left in luxury by Miami’s abundance of development. By Peter B. Laird
A
s waterfront property in the Magic City becomes increasingly scarce, more and more luxury-residential developers are shifting their sights north to Broward County and beyond, where land is more affordable and redevelopment opportunities abound. Take Fort Lauderdale Beach — where funky beachfront motels are giving way to condo-hotel developments bearing the flags of some of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands, including The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons. Needless to say, they’re catering to a very different crowd than the one that packed the Elbo Room in the 1980s. The beach isn’t the only part of Fort Lauderdale that’s going upscale, however. The city, itself, is attracting huge interest from developers who see an untapped market for luxury-waterfront development. Known as “The Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is laced with hundreds of miles of waterways that offer ample opportunities for life on the water. “Fort Lauderdale may not have the glitz and glamour that Miami does, but the city is becoming more sophisticated by the day,” says Bradley Deckelbaum, a fourth-generation developer who grew up in the area and is now a principal at Premier Developers. “It has great shopping, dining, arts and entertainment, and it’s also a world-class boating center that attracts high, networth individuals from around the globe.” Forbes magazine recently ranked Fort Lauderdale eighth on its list of “Best Buy Cities” because it has so much to offer. Yet, property values here haven’t hit the stratosphere as they have further south, where a Miami Beach penthouse recently sold for $60 million.
The beach isn’t the only part of Fort Lauderdale going upscale. The city is attracting huge interest from developers.
ELEGANCE ON THE RIVER One of the prettiest waterways in Fort Lauderdale is the serene Middle River, which meanders southward through 68 TRILLIONAIRE
quiet residential neighborhoods before connecting with the Intracoastal Waterway. Here on the river’s west bank is where Deckelbaum chose to build Riva, the area’s first luxuryresidential development. The $150-million project, with a sleek, contemporary design by Jiro Yates of Fort Lauderdale-based FSMY Architects and Planners, broke ground in August 2015 and is slated for completion during winter 2016. A 15-story tower with just 100 residences, Riva offers the best of both worlds — a tranquil waterfront lifestyle, paired with a prime location in the heart of the city — that places residents just minutes from Fort Lauderdale’s best restaurants, shops, galleries, museums, theaters, parks, and of course, its world-famous beach. “I challenged our architect to design a building with fewer larger residences, and with more space for amenities,” Deckelbaum says. “And rather than go tall, I wanted a horizontal design that takes full advantage of Riva’s waterfront site.” GENTLE CURVES Riva’s curvilinear design follows the gentle curve of the river along 400 feet of shoreline, offering panoramic, unobstructed views to the east and west. The tower sits on its own private, lushly landscaped riverfront park with an owners’ promenade overlooking the river and picturesque George English Park just beyond. The River Club will likely be one of Riva’s most popular amenities. Occupying nearly all of the building’s fourth and fifth floors, it features a waterfront fitness center, Borghese spa, expansive terraces, a 65-foot lap pool, fully furnished cabanas, and the unique “Cucina” — a fully equipped kitchen and dining room where residents can entertain and cook for up to 30 guests or have their own private chef prepare a fivestar meal. In addition, a private watersports center offers boat slips for residents, storage for their kayaks and paddleboards, and a
Each residence at Riva is designed to complement both location and lifestyle. private water taxi that will ferry them to tennis across the river, shopping at The Galleria, or dinner on Las Olas. Each residence at Riva is designed to complement both location and lifestyle. Open, airy floor plans offer up to 2,500 square feet of indoor living area for a two-bedroom unit to more than 3,500 square feet for three bedrooms — with prices ranging from $675,000 to $1.6 million. Interior living space seems even larger, thanks to nine-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass throughout, and a 30-foot-wide great room with multiple seating areas and dining room. Spacious master suites feature large walk-in closets and sleek, polished stone and glass “wet room” baths. Riva’s open-island kitchens come with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, including gas cooktops, plus stone countertops and imported Italian-design cabinetry. And because this is South Florida, after all, where people can enjoy outdoor living yearround, each residence opens onto an exceptionally large and livable outdoor terrace featuring a summer kitchen with builtin grill and counter. With their gorgeous views, these terraces are a natural extension of indoor living areas and the perfect places for entertaining.
DOUBLE THE LUXURY Taking Riva to the next level, entirely, are its eight penthouse units on the building’s top two floors. Priced from $2.65 million, these grand residences double up on luxury with two floors, two terraces, two horizons, and a private two-car garage. Indooroutdoor living space ranges from 5,000 to more than 7,000 square feet, with up to four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths. Each residence boasts oversized sunrise and sunset terraces, rooftop spa with ocean moonlight views, private elevator foyer, private elevator between the two floors, and a private boat slip. The most impressive unit at Riva, however, is the River Loft. Occupying the tower’s entire second and third floors and curving above 250 feet of waterfront, this $5.25-million residence offers the ultimate privacy and more than 12,000 square feet of living space with four bedrooms, study/guest room, and four-and-a-half baths. Extending 150 feet from the custom kitchen all the way to the two-story bedroom wing are 16-foot-high walls of glass, providing panoramic vistas of the Middle River and George English Park. Access to the River Loft is provided by two private elevators — one from the lobby, the other from a secure, two-car garage — while a third interior elevator connects the residence’s two levels. Outside, the River Loft offers more than 2,700 square feet of terraces, including an expansive 83-foot-long terrace overlooking the river, an upper-level terrace off one of the three upstairs bedrooms, and a private-pool terrace with spiral staircase leading down to the river walk and the owner’s own 35-foot boat slip. Decklebaum, who “discovered” Riva’s site — while paddle boarding along the Middle River and plans on living there himself — calls the River Loft the most unique waterfront residence in all of Fort Lauderdale. “There’s nothing on the water like it, anywhere,” he says. “Like Riva itself, the River Loft is truly a one-of-a-kind residence.” TM

The latest place for luxury is former sleepy seaside village Pompano Beach, and Sabbia Beach is leading the new wave. By Peter B. Laird

hat happens when one of Canada’s largest and most successful homebuilders decides to develop in South Florida? You get Sabbia Beach, Pompano Beach’s first ultra-luxury, “toes-in-thesand” residential development in a decade. Danny and Joseph Salvatore, principals in Ontario-based Fernbrook Homes — whose luxury condominiums have transformed Toronto’s waterfront skyline — and Grupo Fernandez — Venezuela’s largest construction company — are the developers of Sabbia Beach. Situated on the widest stretch of pristine Pompano Beach, the project promises to usher in a new era of luxury for the once-sleepy seaside village nestled midway between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Indeed, Pompano Beach, today, is awash in a wave of municipal-development projects that include a beautifully restored beach, a new streetscape along Atlantic Avenue, a creative-arts district and cultural center, and the new Fishing Village — six oceanfront acres of upscale shops and restaurants with a promenade linking the Intracoastal Waterway to the beach and a newly renovated Fishing Pier. On land or on the water, life at Sabbia Beach offers endless opportunities to take advantage of the best South Florida has to offer. “There’s no question that Pompano Beach is fast becoming
a vibrant, sophisticated, multidimensional destination,” says Danny Salvatore. “And now it is getting a luxury address worthy of the city’s location along one of South Florida’s most beautiful stretches of oceanfront.” ON THE OCEAN, OF THE OCEAN Sabbia Beach’s 19-story tower at 730 North Ocean Boulevard will be home to just 68 oceanfront residences with sweeping views of the city, Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic. The beauty of the ocean inspires every aspect of Sabbia Beach, from its distinctive architectural design by the renowned Miami firm Arquitectonica, to Interiors by Steven G., and the site-sensitive landscape design by ArquitectonicaGEO. “Sabbia Beach is one of the last places in South Florida to find new construction directly on the sand, offering sophisticated oceanfront living,” says Salvatore. “It’s a place where surf, sun, sand, and style all come together in perfect harmony.” Its timeless design eschews glitz and reflects the organic colors and forms of its surroundings. The unique pattern and earth tones of its pedestal provide a natural backdrop to the sand, beach grass, shrubs, and trees, while the tower’s light blue-green glass mirrors the colors of the sea. The building’s
most distinctive feature — its gently undulating façade and balconies — echoes the ripples of the ocean. SPACIOUS AND GRACIOUS Every aspect of Sabbia Beach is designed to embrace and enhance the oceanfront lifestyle. The luxury tower’s “backyard” is 200 linear feet of pristine, white-sand beach that stretches 300 feet from shore to door — half of which is a private, palm-shaded beach for the exclusive use of residents. Overlooking the beach is an exotic oceanfront pool deck with ultra-contemporary heated pool and Jacuzzi. A stunning porte-cochère entrance offers a preview of the luxuries that await residents inside. Indoor amenities include a boutique lobby with state-of-the-art security and concierge, world-class fitness center with ocean views, a spa with treatment rooms and his-and-her steam rooms and saunas, and a 3,600-square-foot multipurpose social room with full bar, catering kitchen, seating, game and poker tables, large-screen TV, and other comforts. Residents also enjoy private covered parking and 24-hour valet parking. Sabbia Beach offers a variety of spacious floor plans with two-, three-, and four-bedroom units — priced from the low $900,000s to $3.5 million — and penthouses, including a pair of two-story residences on the tower’s top floors — starting at $5 million. Floor-to-ceiling glass and generous balconies with glass railings afford panoramic views of the ocean, city, and Intracoastal Waterway, and high end features and finishes complete the luxe offerings. Each well-appointed residence features direct elevator access with private or semi-private foyer, double-door entry opening to expansive views, and a large master suite with walkin closet and luxurious bathroom with stone countertops, bidet, and free-standing soaking tub. Gourmet-chef ’s island kitchens at Sabbia Beach appeal to anyone who enjoys entertaining. “In addition to stone countertops and custom-designed Italian cabinetry, all kitchens feature Miele induction-cooktop ranges, wine coolers and concealed dishwashers, and Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezers,” says Salvatore. Among the very best residences available at Sabbia Beach is the 3,005-square-foot Barona. This three-bedroom, four-bath residence with media room/den boasts spectacular ocean views
to the north and east, direct elevator access with private foyer, an expansive 44-foot by 14-foot great room, and a generous wrap-around balcony. For those who especially enjoy al fresco living, the tower’s fourth floor is home to the exclusive Terrazzas at Sabbia Beach — a select offering of just four corner residences priced from $1.3 million. These exclusive two-, three-, and four-bedroom residences boast expansive, wrap-around terraces ranging from 1,762 to 3,940 square feet — larger than most South Florida condominiums — with summer kitchen, spa, shower, and raised deck — offering breathtaking views of ocean and city skyline. TM Sabbia Beach, at 730 North Ocean Boulevard, Pompano Beach, is expected to be completed in late 2017.

arely is there a home that blends eras so seamlessly. Making it even more desirable is that opportunities for such classic beauties come to market infrequently. “There are only a handful of homes such as this that we all know and admire,” says Jill Hertzberg — part of the well known The Jills’ Coldwell Banker sales team, along with Jill Eber. 6385 Pine Tree Drive Circle is one of these meticulous gems. Painstakingly remodeled and expanded, the 1937 classic Mediterranean mansion has “smart house” integration throughout, yet retains its old-world Miami grandeur. “In time, it has been modernized and made for today’s living,” says Hertzberg. “The owners were very respectful of the history of the house, but have brought it very much into today.” With a main house of more than 8,000 square feet — 9 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and 2 half baths — there are more
than 4,000 additional square feet devoted to two stand-alone guest staff quarters and separate over-garage apartment suites, which are accommodations meant for guests who are invited to stay for long visits because of the grandness of the interiors and layouts of the guest suites. “When you restore these classic homes, it must be done with tremendous care and patience, as well as knowledge,” says the luxury-real-estate expert, who points out that “this kind of restoration is a whole different process than directing the building of a brand-new estate.” Entrance to the home immediately offers a glimpse into this architectural treasure. The private palm-lined, large inner courtyard glimmers with its Honduran-crafted Dominicanquarried coral stone. Hand-cut Chicago brick driveways and walkway beckon visitors to stroll through its outdoor artistry — a 22,000-gallon pool, a 7,000-gallon Koi pond overlooking Indian Creek, and sculpture gardens by Miami’s most sought after landscape designer Fernando Wong.

Hertzberg says that the Pine Tree Drive home is doubly one-of-a-kind and a collector’s item, which a preservationist will delight in through and through. With 175 feet of direct waterfront overlooking scenic Indian Creek, it is ideally situated on a rarely offered 1.1-acre lot. “Most of the lots in the area on the Venetians have typically 60 feet of waterfront. Maybe on some of the islands, it might be 100, but there are very few that have 175 feet and in protected water.” The water frontage is also “no bridges to bay,” which is quite desirable for the yachting enthusiast who can’t wait to go full throttle onto the water. The auto collector will find satisfaction, too, with the modern addition of six, fully air-conditioned garage bays on site. “Anyone who cherishes their cars will be pleased that each chamber is like an apartment for your automobiles,” says Hertzberg. The garage complex features custom-designed auto collectors’ lighting. To complete the house made for a collector, there’s a 1,000-bottle capacity, stone-clad wine cellar. A media room, complete with wet bar, is made for entertaining — as is the expansive outdoor barbeque and bar cabana. The home interior has been impeccably furnished
and designed. “Beautiful finishes and the artwork come together to complement both the traditional and modern atmosphere of the house,” says Hertzberg. The elegant foyer entrance is customized with “oldworld” crafted iron staircase railings and beautifully finished wood banisters. A formal dining room, with a raised custom-designed wood ceiling, has modernity built in with programmable indirect lighting. The smart house integration throughout is the latest 2015 Crestron and Lutron state-of-the-art technology. “The owners have been very respectful of the tradition of the house, while creating something that is very much of today.” TM Priced at $19,800,000. www.thejills.com.

Carlos Betancourt is a key figure in modern art. Closer to home, he’s credited with helping to launch Miami’s art scene in the 1980s.
T
he works of artist Carlos Betancourt are difficult to define, yet critics and scholars try. Interview magazine, in its review of the hardcover book that was released last October, Imperfect Utopia, described Betancourt’s style like this: “If you like the glitz of Warhol mixed with the sharper aesthetic of Rauschenberg, you’ll enjoy his work.” When the artist is asked how to categorize his own work, he says quite simply – “the concept dictates the medium.” As a photographer, painter, and mixed-media artist, the multidisciplinary approach suits the Miami-based artist. “It is very liberating,” he says. And as far as others labeling his work, he encourages it. “Sometimes it’s better to let others describe my artwork; I learn a lot from that symbiotic relationship.” He uses colors that are bold and luxurious — his art is dynamic and fantastical. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Cuban parents, the family moved to Miami when he was in his teens in 1981. His influential studio — Imperfect Utopia, on Lincoln Road — is credited with launching the Miami art scene in the 1980s. Turning 50 this year, Betancourt has spent three decades creating compelling art, which museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, and The Smithsonian Institute have added to their permanent collections. In Puerto Rico, a mid-career retrospective, titled Re-Collections — which consists of works from 2001 to 2015 — continues at San Juan’s Museo de Arte Contemporaneo through April. Trillionaire talked to Betancourt about his life, his art, and his 50th birthday. TRILLIONAIRE: I’ve heard you explain the similarities of Puerto Rico and Miami in your work.

and blend diverse cultures that provoke unexpected syncretic opportunities that are fascinating to me. On the other hand, the tropical rainforest of Puerto Rico and the constant relationship with nature in the island was very influential to me early on.” T: I am fascinated by the story of you becoming a Christo groupie when you were (how old?) at Miami Coral Park Senior High. CB: “When Christo was working on the Surrounded Islands, I was a volunteer…one of many. I think I was 15 years old (1983) then and I was very impressed by the project and the possibilities and freedom that visual arts represented. The unusual approach to art and the fuchsia palette was captivating. I found out Christo was staying on Ocean Drive, at the Leslie Hotel, and I would go by to catch a glimpse of him, like a groupie. Instead I discovered the decaying Art Deco and mid-century architecture of Ocean Drive and the rest of Miami Beach. It was a Buck Rogers, Jetsonian community then — pretty much abandoned, but full of possibilities and optimism. I decided then that after college, I would set my art studio in Miami Beach.” T: Your work contains a lot of “memory.” Do you think that’s part of your DNA — Puerto Rican, Cuban-exile parents, and then a life spent in Miami? CB: “Perhaps. It is fascinating to me to find themes associated with memory in most of my artwork. Re-conceptualizing the past in a new context helps me understand the present and be aware.” T: What do you think draws people to your work? CB: “My realm of communicating is through a visual image, for the most part. I enjoy when others complete the
journey with words. In the book, Imperfect Utopia, inaugural poet Richard Blanco wrote in the foreword that when he encounters some of my constructed photographs: ‘I get a distinct sense of remembering something intimate, yet distant; real, yet imagined... like something I forgot to remember... and I rush to fill his photographs with my own memories, with a narrative — real or imagined...’ I like to think that my work represents a sense of my freedom.” T: Is there any one piece of your art that you will never part with? Even if someone absolutely had to have it? CB: “Probably the vintage-glass Christmas ornaments piece. Not ready to let go of that yet.” T: You were part of Miami’s art scene way before Art Basel made Miami an “it” place for art. CB: “After finishing school, I returned to Miami Beach and opened my studio on Lincoln Road. The place quickly became a hang out. It was quite an organic movement composed of people attracted by similar interests in art, music, architecture, etc. Life friendships were being forged, and an underground scene was soon shaped, provoking and challenging established ways. Our projects were influenced by the histories of the immediate past imposed by the surrounding architecture. Aging go-go dancers and switchboard ladies mingling with poets, visual artists, remarkable drag queens, gays, musicians — everything and everybody in Miami Beach was connecting and clashing. It all seemed to be linked together by a profound need to express the shape of things to come — the future, in other words.
“I don’t know about being famous, but I can give advice to an artist on how to find a unique language.”
Eventually, New York artists, bohemian celebrities, the jet set, and models began to appear from all over and the merging continued to the sounds of Frank Sinatra, La Lupe, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Imperfect Utopia was in the middle of all that. The momentum lasted for a phenomenal while — at least a decade. Then, with the arrival of developers, the forces of pop culture, and mainstream armies, gentrification began.” T: You’re turning 50. (His birthday is March 18.) Anything planned? CB: “Yes….being celebrated like a jubilee, all year long. It involves nature, loved ones, and traveling, which I love to do. Hopefully and gratefully, first stop is the rain forest in Puerto Rico — super intimate and quiet time, a way of honoring this time. Greek Isles I enjoy, so hopefully, will reach the Aegean. Friends have a place in Careyes, Mexico, and I love spending some time there with nature and love.” T: You’ve had quite an illustrious career for not-yet-50. Any advice for someone who wants to be a “famous artist?” CB: “Thanks. That’s very generous of you. I don’t know about being famous, but I can give advice to an artist on how to maybe find a unique language. Spend lots of time in the studio, working every day and night. Something will give. Embrace your background and your surroundings, being honest with it at all cost. Allow spontaneity, and believe in something greater. Enjoy and embrace life. Be kind and courteous. And remember that art is everywhere, anywhere — all the time.” TM

Co-owner Cécile Adam explains how the fantastic Entre Cielos got its start with a group of three friends who had a vision and a dream to create a place to share with others that would provide inspiring experiences and life-enriching moments. “It would also produce wine,” says Adam, “which is one of the nicest door openers to connect people.” Adam and two other friends and their families traveled from Switzerland to France and Argentina looking for a place to transform. The friends had varied backgrounds, but all had the same philosophy on life: “Make the best of your time on earth, do what you dream for, and don’t be scared of the unknown.” The group’s motivation to realize their dream inspired other family members. “In the end, we were 12 people moving to Argentina. Everyone had fallen in love with the charming wine region, Mendoza.” They found an abandoned vineyard in the Lujan de Cuyo wine area, a 20-minute drive from Mendoza, and opened the hotel in 2011.
After the operation of the hotel started, the majority of the group went back to Switzerland, Adam explains. “Mostly the ones with children.” Three of the Swiss entrepreneurs stayed behind to manage the resort. In addition to Adam, there’s David Wäger and his sister, Judith Wäger. There is so much to revel in at Entre Cielos, where Adam says guests enjoy a “modern Mendoza experience.” Ultra-modern architecture and highly stylized rooms offer contrast to the natural surroundings of the working vineyard right outside your door. It is a bit like heaven on earth and Entre Cielos certainly lives up to its name, which translates to “between heaven.” While all of the accommodations have an exceptional uniqueness, the Limited Edition Vineyard Loft is unlike anything else. The room, named Rosa Blanca, stands in the
open on stilts above the vineyards. It has a style that looks like it’s landed from space with its futuristic styling. There’s a Jacuzzi on the terrace and a window in the roof where guests of the abode can sip the fruits of the vineyard’s bounty and delight in the starry sky that overlooks the loft, creating a view that seems like it was painted by Van Gogh. Each room is named in some fashion for wines, such as the Classic — Classics are honest and unique, with powerful colors and a bouquet that can develop enormously. Young wines are often vivacious and lively, according to Adam, and that’s the name given to the four standard rooms that are named after typical Malbec aromas — Castanas, Casis, Canela, Cardamomo. Reserva suites, duplexes, are where demanding connoisseurs can unwind. Reserva wines are noted for their maturity and harmony; Gran Reserva are complex, structured

wines with singular aromas. The Grand Cru Granada master suite has a rainforest shower and terrace by the vineyard. “Landscaping for us was as important as the architecture,” says Adam. “Daniela Wäger, the creative mind in our Swiss group, designed the garden and the interiors, together, with a local team. The idea was to work with modern elements like concrete, window walls, and forms to give everything a cozy feeling.” There really is no other place like Entre Cielos. Adding to that designation is the hotel spa’s first traditional hamam in Latin America. The thousand-year old concept uses heat and water at different temperatures to rid the body of accumulated toxins and relax the mind to a degree you may not think possible. There are many things to delight in, but when in Rome — well, in this case Mendoza — indulge. Being in the heart of a wine region, the hamam treatment experts have created a Wine Grape Therapy. Vineotherapy includes grape treatments such as a body exfoliation that uses grape seeds, a wine bath of grape extracts that maximizes the vitamins and minerals from the grapes to soften and soothe the skin, and grape seed and oil massages. With eight acres of Malbec grapes, along with some Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, Entre Cielos produces three lines of its own exclusive wines named Marantal. “Our wines are different than the average Argentinian wine,” says Adam. “When we first arrived, the vineyard of 80-year-old Malbec was dried out, so we needed to plant 84 TRILLIONAIRE
new Malbec.” And they sought out the best winemaker in the area to work with them in shaping the new vineyard and creating their own wines. Huber Weber, the winemaker, creates the wines in a traditional French style with Malbec, then takes various components of other wines to create a custom concoction that results in an award-winning formula. The resort also capitalizes on it being in a place where meeting around a coal fire for a meal is a social occasion. Twice weekly, Entre Cielos invites guests to an asado, which literally means barbecue, for an open-fire meal. Guests make their own empanadas of beef and eat generous portions of steak as part of The Beef Club. “We have the best meat in Mendoza, but this recognition has yet to come, as we just inaugurated it. Best, because our ‘asador’ has a special gift for treating fire, coals, and the meat. Since we opened, even Argentines have said, it’s the best meat they have eaten so far.” TM

JUDGEMENT DAY Stags’ Leap Winery made history in 1976. Taste some of the fruits of the vineyard’s bounty.
I
By Irene Moore
n 1976, in honor of the American Bicentennial, Steven Spurrier, a wineshop owner in Paris, organized a blind tasting — pitting renowned reds from Bordeaux and whites from Burgundy against Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays from California. Although the tasting began as a publicity stunt, two American wines — red and white — placed first, and the event took on unexpected significance. The “Judgment of Paris” was a triumph for California winemakers. The 1973 Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars’ Cabernet Sauvignon won first place, beating out the French Bordeaux. One of the Napa Valley’s earliest wine estates, its unique terroir and ideal microclimate support the area’s classical winemaking techniques. (The other winner was a 1973 Chardonnay from Napa Valley’s Chateau Montelena, which placed first — ahead of the best

French white Burgundies.) In May, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the “Judgment of Paris” winetasting competition. In 1996, on the 20th anniversary of the tasting, the museum collected bottles of the two winning vintages, which are now on display in the “FOOD: Transforming the American Table, 1950–2000” exhibition in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, this year, Stags’ Leap Winery celebrates 100 years. Located in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District, it is a place of natural beauty, with picturesque wine estates, a lively history, and a reputation for elegant wines showing finesse and intensity. Here are five of our favorites. TM
2012 STAGS’ LEAP WINE CELLARS CASK 23 CABERNET SAUVIGNON: Cask 23, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags’ Leap Wine Cellars Estate Collection, is among the most highly regarded and collected Cabernet Sauvignons, worldwide. It’s a harmonious blend of grapes from two Stags’ Leap Estate vineyards, combining the signature perfume notes of the FAY vineyard with the structure and minerality of the S.L.V. — Stags’ Leap Vineyard — which was the initial vineyard owned by the estate. This vineyard was the source of the grapes that produced the wine that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris. This Cabernet Sauvignon shows the same finesse and intensity as that firstplace winner, opening with aromas of black cherry, dark plum, espresso, and spice. On the palate it expands, coating the whole mouth with rich fruit, full and sweet tannins, and lingering flavors — mocha and black tea. $350, 750 ml. 2011 SHAFER HILLSIDE SELECT CABERNET SAUVIGNON: Recognized by wine collectors as one of the world’s best and most sought-after wines, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a “wine of a place” — sourced from hillside vineyards in the heart of the Stags Leap District. It expresses the voluptuous fruit, rich flavors, and velvety texture that characterize grapes grown in this famous AVA (American Viticultural Area). The wine is aged four years prior to release — three years in oak barrels and 15 months in the bottle — giving it vibrancy, along with the richness of aging. Ripe and refined tannins hold out the promise that this vintage will gain richness and maturity with up to 20 years of careful cellaring. $250, 750 ml. 2013 SHAFER MERLOT: 2013 was a classic Napa Valley vintage filled with warm, sunny days and perfect, chilly nights from spring through early autumn. The consistency of heat and coolness created an ideal growing season, resulting in an ideal vintage with fruit harvested at ideal ripeness and brimming with rich color and flavor. This muchpraised Merlot blend — with eight percent Cabernet Sauvignon and eight percent Malbec — is fragrant, bright, and fresh, with rich, enticing aromas and flavors of briar fruit jam, black currant, black-cherry, sage, herbs, red berries, and vanilla, wrapping up with a long, vibrant finish. $55, 750 ml.
THE WHITES
2013 PINE RIDGE LE PETIT CLOS CHARDONNAY: Le Petit Clos, “The Little Enclosure,” is tucked away on a northeastern-facing hillside on the Pine Ridge Estate. This very special two-acre block is cultivated to produce one of the only Chardonnays planted in the Stags Leap District. Le Petit Clos is sheltered from the heat in the shade of the pines, with afternoon breezes that course into this small canyon behind the winery. A slightly cooler microclimate is created, resulting in low-yield fruit with luscious, intense flavors. The 1973 Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena, which placed first ahead of the best French white Burgundies, was produced in Calistoga, a different Napa Valley AVA. It is, however, known for the same intense concentration on the palate as Le Petis Clos, with bright acidity and layers of citrus. $75, 750 ml. 2013 SHAFER RED SHOULDER RANCH CHARDONNAY: The 20th vintage of this wine makes it an exciting milestone for Shafer. Based in the Stags Leap District, the winery produces this Chardonnay from smallclustered clones of grapes grown in their vineyard in Carneros — another Napa Valley AVA — which are selected for their low yields and distinctive flavors. The cool, long, steady growing season provides the ideal spot for growing the exotic flavors in this wine, resulting in brightness, richness, and complexity. It has citrus-flower aromas, juicy fruit flavors of apricot, red, and green apple, honeysuckle, kiwi, pineapple, Meyer lemon zest, and vanilla, with a touch of minerality and lively acidity. $52, 750 ml. Stags Leap District wines not only have regional character, but also a classic character that goes back in history. The appellation and its wines resonate with life, culture, and food and continue to be appreciated by the wine-loving world.

RICHES of ITALY As the world’s number of super yachts expands, there is added competition for marina space and a desire for more adventurous ports of call.
Italy
Sicily
By Irene Moore
B
uyers of super yachts at this year’s 31st Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, which begins March 17 and runs through March 20, are facing a common dilemma — increasing difficulty in finding marina space during the prime summer months in some of their choice locales, which include St. Tropez, Cannes and Monte Carlo. And forget St. Barth in the winter. The question is, “Where is the next Monte Carlo or St. Tropez?” Obviously, the Côte d’Azur will always be among super yachters’ hottest destinations, but trend trackers say there is an increasing desire among owners to break away from the crowds and visit places off the beaten path. Meanwhile, the yachting industry estimates that the world’s existing fleet of super yachts will grow by 60 percent in the next two decades — to around 11,000. To service that yen for adventure, new ports are being positioned with the lure of becoming the next European Riviera. In southern Italy, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities, and Tourism (MiBACT) has stepped up to the dock with Signa Maris, a nautical tourism program. Signa Maris features marinas along Italy’s southern coast and invites yachting tourists to avail themselves of the rich Naples

heritage within easy reach of any given touristic port. Signa Maris also promotes the cultural, naturalistic, and gastronomic riches in Italy’s uncrowded southern regions that may not be on a super yachter’s regular itinerary — particularly the ports of Calabria, Campania, Puglia, and Sicily. Here you’re more apt to see what people often call “the real Italy,” away from the heavily touristic regions of the north. Signa Maris has created a set of itineraries for new discoveries, accessible through the region’s ports. A typical itinerary would be a stop at the port of Naples, a gateway to both the city and the islands of the Bay of Naples. At the Port of Santa Lucia, the itinerary includes a sail to Ischia or Capri. Yachters soak up the sun, swim in clear waters, and chill out in a hot spa. Each island has its characteristic features, so the itinerary includes a visit to the Villa of Tiberius or the breathtaking Grotta Azzurra, a marvel of nature and the most-famous sight on Capri. Yachters dock their boats and hop aboard a wooden rowboat manned by a guide, whose effortless navigation takes them through the meter-high mouth of the cave and then from complete darkness into a sparkling cavern, the Grotta Azzura (Blue Grotto). Take in the colored houses of Procida, or hike up to the Aragonese Castle on Ischia. Procida, the Bay of Naples’ smallest island — and also its best-kept secret — is similar to Portofino, but without the crowds. Procida is an ideal place to explore on foot. Adventurers will find that its picturesque blend of lemon groves and pastel-hued houses around the port will provide them with colorful memories of a charming town. On Ischia, at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, those seeking an experience with a great view can climb up to the Aragonese Castle, built in 474 B.C., with two towers that were constructed to
Pompeii
control enemy fleets’ movements. The castle, which stands on a volcanic rock, is the most impressive historical monument in Ischia. Due to longstanding archaeological digs, the houses and buildings of Pompeii and Herculaneum have re-emerged almost intact, with forums, theatres, and baths still remaining. History-loving yachters can walk through streets dotted with old frescoed tabernae, whose shop counters are still intact. Herculaneum, which was even better preserved by a lava layer, should not be missed — nor should another ancient town, Oplontis, and modern Torre Annunziata, where Villa Poppaea has been identified and excavated. These are best-kept secrets for those seeking refuge from run-of-the-mill tourists spots — with the new marina destinations keeping possible adventures exciting, yet remaining off the radar. TM

McLaren P1 GTR
FAST TRACK
Without road-car regulations to hold it back, the McLaren P1 GTR pushes everything to the limit By Richard Kollins
O
wning a car is one thing, but having a car in your personal stable whose sole purpose is to test your skills on a special track — now that’s the stuff of an automotive fanatic’s ultimate fantasy. The McLaren P1 GTR, of which only 35 are being made, is the highest tech track car ever made. Specifically, the car is not homologated for any

Most GTR owners have already “spec’d” their cars out with the McLaren techs at the factory in Surrey, England. Those who want to store their $3-million price-tagged cars can opt to leave them in the care of the factory, and the automaker will bring them to organized track days. When the cars aren’t being driven at warp speeds, a team of technicians and engineers at the factory will continually maintain an owner’s GTR. While the anticipation of getting on the track is the best build up, the second most exciting day, 92 TRILLIONAIRE
next to taking to the track, is an owner’s Grand Reveal, the ultimate first viewing experience. Owners are greeted with a champagne reception and then escorted to a private viewing facility, where sliding doors open for the first look of their supercar. But when it’s race time, get ready. McLaren Special Operation (MSO) offers its customers a unique McLaren P1 GTR Driver Program to fully exploit the ownership experience. As Paul Mackenzie, McLaren P1 GTR program director explains, “The program is about enabling our drivers to get the most out of both the McLaren P1 GTR and themselves. Before they get out on the track, each driver will join us at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) and have unprecedented access to our cutting-edge facilities, including the racing simulator. They’ll build up a greater understanding of the car’s capabilities and true performance, as well as learning braking and turn-in points, before they arrive at the circuit. It also allows them to analyze and discuss their performance ahead of testing themselves in the real-world situation.” Mackenzie explains that the program was developed for its own Formula 1 team. “It’s not just about fitness, but looks at the full wellbeing of the driver, preparing them mentally and physically for the adrenaline of an unforgettable track experience.” Upon completion of the initial training at the MTC, owners will be challenging Formula 1 Grand Prix circuits, with six exclusive events during the year. A dedicated McLaren team of head engineer and driving coaches will analyze the telemetry and videos to hone skills with drivers for that perfect lap. The tuition for this one-on-
one program is tailored to each driver’s skill level. So what’s under the hood? Like the P1, it has a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain, but can deliver nearly 1,000 horsepower. Engineers have rid the P1 GTR of excess weight and outfitted it with equipment specifically for the racing circuit. Expect this P1 GTR to break the track times of Formula 1 cars of not long ago. Seemingly, with McLaren literally inventing the hyper (street driven) car and taking it to an all new level with the P1 GTR, the game seems over. TM

SPIRIT OF GIVING Miamians show that generosity and compassion are a way of life. By Marile Lopez
M
iami may have a “party-all-night” reputation. However, sometimes those parties are not just for fun, but for a cause. If Miamians are one thing, they are givers. We’re people who like to have a good time, but many times our parties are also focused on giving — giving to worthy causes that directly impact the communities in which we live. This is the true essence of philanthropy.
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Diamond Ball
The spirit of giving in Miami is genuine and inspired. It comes out of unique traditions, values, and a sincere love for our very diverse city. The people who shape the city in business — both private and public — also donate their time, talents, and treasures to the charities who need their expertise the most. Miami leads the nation in the inclusive culture of giving. And, as a reflection of its individualistic nature, we take an innovative approach to philanthropy. For example, there’s the 24-hour celebration of giving, which Miami Foundation started in 2012 with “Give Miami Day.” This year, Miamians donated nearly $7 million to more than 500 local charities within an entire 24-hour cycle of viral virtual giving. Diversity in philanthropy is also evident throughout our community. The American Cancer Society Walk Against Breast Cancer in October raised over $300,000 with more than 10,000 attending. Plus, the Together for the Children campaign — chaired by Barbara and Jack Nicklaus, who donated $60 million as part of their Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation — helped raise $150 million in three short years for new state-of-the-art pediatriccare facilities. Philanthropy is seen at its best at the galas and social gatherings that raise millions of dollars to Lucy Morillo, Dr. Narendra Kini with help ensure the wellbeing of the Barbara and Jack Nicklaus less fortunate — the true neediest of our community. Such was the case this “social season” with its high points and distinctive events, such as the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Diamond Ball, YoungArts Backyard Ball Performance and Gala, and Gala in the Garden at Fairchild Botanic Garden. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Diamond Ball was held in October at the JW Marriott Marquis in downtown Miami, overlooking pristine Biscayne 94 TRILLIONAIRE
Bay. MCHF holds a special place in my heart — I am the chair of the foundation’s board of directors. At this year’s ninth anniversary gala, Mr. Worldwide himself — Miami’s own Pitbull, now an international star — helped raise more than $3 million. Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez, was honored by being inducted into the Ambassador Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame. Co-chairs Eilah and Ben Beavers truly understood how to raise awareness and demonstrated throughout the night the mission of this world-class pediatric hospital. YoungArts Gala is “the arts” at its best. At its core is the acknowledgement and fostering of young talent, encouraging a formal arts education. The YoungArts Foundation was founded more than 35 years ago by philanthropists Ted and Lynn Arison. Its campus is home to more than ten art disciplines, where high school students emerge themselves in a week of one-on-one mentormentee programs and young artists work with renowned masters. January is known as YoungArts Week and Miami embraces these young artists, who YoungArts Backyard Ball Performance and Gala come from around our nation to spend time in the Magic City to learn from the most talented. The culmination of YoungArts week is the Backyard Ball Performance and Gala — held on the YoungArts campus — where these talented students perform and delight their guests. The ball, co-chaired by Armando and Margarita Codina and Tracey and Bruce Berkowitz, raised $1.6 million dollars, which will provide scholarships for young performers. Fairchild Tropical Gardens is a gem in our community that needs to be preserved and maintained for future generations. Gala in the Gardens transformed Fairchild into a magical storybook setting under an enchanted tent. Chairs Swanee DiMare and Frances Sevilla-SaCasa help ensure Fairchild’s programs in education, conservation science, and horticulture. This February marked the 23rd Annual Gala, whose theme was “Starry, Starry Night.” These ladies and their hardworking gala committee are an example to all of how generous Miamians truly are. Miami is a young community — a community of individuals whose characteristics are still being defined. We know, firsthand, of the benevolent nature of Miamians because we personally see it in our volunteer work and philanthropic endeavors. I cannot imagine a better way to live or a better way of sharing than by supporting your charity of choice — by making an impact, by giving back to your community. May your generous and compassionate spirit be moved. See you at the next gala! TM

IN THE SADDLE Hermès presented a special preview of its new jumping saddle – Hermès Allegro – at the 2016 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., in March. A descendant of the Steinkraus saddle, the Allegro was developed with Hermès partner riders Pilar Lucrecia Cordon (Spain), Lillie Keenan (USA) and Daniel Bluman (Colombia). “Years after our well-known Steinkraus, we are glad to present its descendant, Hermès Allegro. Inspired by a shared leitmotiv of ‘less is more,’ Hermès Allegro is the ultimate expression of the values which have driven the creation of all the métiers in the house since its first harnesses in 1837: lightness and functionality before all,” said Marion Larochette, Director of Hermès Equestrian. In addition to the launch of the Hermès Allegro saddle, the house also presents the Hermès Talented Young Rider Award in April at the Winter Equestrian Festival.

Andy Murray heads to the Miami Open after a trip to his favorite getaway, the hotel he owns in Scotland. CROMLIX

The No. 2-ranked tennis player in the world, Andy Murray, looks forward to playing in the Miami Open for many reasons, but one is personal. Murray and wife, Kim Sears — who welcomed baby daughter, Sophia, this past February — have a place in Miami, so he can feel like he’s at a “home base” when he takes to the courts in Key Biscayne. The Open takes place over two weeks, March 21 to April 3. When not traveling around the world 40 weeks out of the year, he takes every opportunity to visit the hotel he owns outside of his hometown of Dunblane, Scotland — the Cromlix House. “Our daughter had been born only a few weeks early, so we decided to take a couple of days so she could meet all of her family. My parents and grandparents still live in the area, but we don’t like to burden them, so we stay at my hotel.” The 28-year-old Murray bought the luxurious country retreat — where his brother, tennis star Jamie Murray was married and his grandparents celebrated their silver wedding anniversary — in February 2013. “The restaurant is run by the world-renowned chef, Albert Roux; so for people like us, who like good food, it’s always a joy to stay there,” he says. “The fact that a lot of family still live in Dunblane is the perfect excuse to visit. Whether it’s visiting Gran to sample some of her shortbread or taking a walk around the cathedral where my wife and I married, it always brings back special memories.” “Sometimes I travel with So what does the tennis pro never my two border terriers, MAGGIE and leave home without when he travels?
“Being on the road all the time makes it difficult to see friends and family. I use FaceTime quite a lot on my iPHONE 6, which is more personal and puts a face to a voice.”

“My partners UNDER ARMOUR have customized my kit so that it has my personal logo on the shirt and shoes, which is a nice touch. I currently wear custom versions of the Raid training shirt and shorts. “
“One of the most important items I take with me everywhere is my MACBOOK PRO. I’m into fantasy sports and in quite a few leagues across a few sports; so I’m always tinkering away with my team, making transfers, and researching new players. It’s serious business!”
“My tennis rackets travel with me. I use the HEAD Graphene Radical pro. I’ve used HEAD for many years, and their development of my racket has been incredible. In the latest version, there’s revolutionary Graphene XT technology, which allows an even better distribution of weight from the shaft to the tip and grip, resulting in more power and improved energy transfer for a faster game.”
