Good Design Matters

When the spaces we work and live in, the objects that fill them and the clothes we wear have all been carefully considered, our lives improve. We interact more effectively and new ideas blossom. Ultimately, good design helps us live the life we want. It makes business sense and those who invest in it reap the rewards both personally and professionally.

Dressing for your ambitions No one knows this more than The Fold. ‘Truly good designers have an instinct for form, silhouette and harmony,’ says The Fold founder Polly McMaster. ‘A clean, refined elegance always feels contemporary but timeless – and that, in essence, is what The Fold’s design ethos is about.’ Which is to say, one of the simplest ways to enhance confidence and individuality in working women, both internally and how we present outwardly, is through a quality, well-designed wardrobe that just works. It says, ‘I know my own mind. I’m capable, unique and I have a sense of style.’
‘Design is intelligence made visible.’ Alina Wheeler, author The findings in The Fold’s 2018 report, Workwear Matters, go a long way to support the hypothesis. In a survey of 1,300 high-powered businesswomen from various industries, it revealed that 98% believe that their personal dressing style helped achieve certain objectives at work and 80% felt the right outfit is crucial to making a good first impression, including at job interviews. Participants also said they wouldn’t take a junior colleague to an important meeting if they didn’t look the part. thefoldlondon.com 29
‘If you don’t care about your appearance, one has to wonder if you care enough to do an A+ job. Your external appearance is often indicative of your internal discipline,’ said one respondent. The ultimate takeaway? Good design matters.
Inspiring and energising interiors It matters so much, in fact, that The Fold has applied the same design principles to its new London office and flagship store, with the help of female-led team Kinnersley Kent Design. ‘Finding a design partner like KKD, who are able to get under the skin of the brief and dig one level deeper – who are prepared to make that extra effort to think about our customers and team in the execution – is so important to us,’ says McMaster. ‘A well-designed space energises the people in it and brings them together.’ The concept for The Fold’s retail space, 28 Cadogan Place, was to offer more than a transaction; it provides a members’ club atmosphere, where customers might sip wine or coffee, work on their laptop or attend an evening event. It’s a place to be inspired and meet likeminded people. In answer to the brief, the KKD designer, Anna Perity-Pond, conceived a multi-layered space using materials like brass, walnut and metal alongside specially commissioned works by female artists. by surface designer Stephanie Tudor, which functions as a central hub for staff and customers to gather, work and socialise. ‘We kept in mind throughout the design of both the flagship and HQ workspace that we were offering professional women a space where they not only felt empowered, but also where they were part of a bigger community and support network. Interior design should be a physical representation of a brand’s message and ethos,’ says Perity-Pond. ‘We wanted to champion the incredible design talent we have in the UK, as well as showcase classic design icons for our interior spaces. When you come to The Fold store or our office space, you’ll find a carefully curated edit that not only inspires but also works for the environment,’ says McMaster.

Workplace productivity In a recent survey, half the people polled said they would turn down a job offer if the office space was uninspiring, and 48% thought it was crucial to aiding collaboration and productivity. Is it time to stop and think about how design is affecting your work and business profitability? ‘For our new head office, we’ve carefully considered how we could better serve every department,’ says McMaster.
