A

ward-winning London milliner Rachel Trevor-Morgan has been creating

bespoke hats since 1990, and is milliner to The Queen. We asked Rachel for her tips on finding the perfect hat for those upcoming summer events.

W H AT C O M E S F I R S T – T H E H AT O R T H E O U T F I T ?

This is a question I am often asked. As our hats are made to order, it is generally easier for us to make the hat to go with a given outfit. However, for Royal Ascot I often have clients for whom the hat is the most important element.

They tend to come in and choose their hat first, then pair it with a classic simple outfit. For a day at the races I always recommend clients to be bold in their hat choice.

You need to remember that everyone will be wearing hats so you can go for it and make a statement!

I S T H E R E A H AT F O R E V E RYO N E ?

Yes I believe there is a hat for everyone. I often hear women say that hats are not for them but I simply don’t think it's true. It’s more often about how the client sees themselves. We are all rather out of the habit of hat wearing – it helps to go to an expert milliner who can guide you in your decision.

It is important to choose a hat that works with you. You must wear the hat, not the hat wear you. Try on lots of different shapes, it is important to see yourself in many different styles to see what works for you.

W H AT A R E YO U R E X P E R T T I P S F O R A H AT S H O P P I N G T R I P ?

When a client visits us at the showroom, I would ask them to bring along any inspiration; sketches and fabric swatches or their outfit. This gives me an idea of their thoughts and helps me to visualise what might work. Have your hair in a low chignon or in the style you intend to wear for your event so you can see your neckline and know how the hat fits.

A R E T H E R E A N Y U N D E R S TAT E D S T Y L E S T H AT YO U W O U L D R E C O M M E N D T O T H E U N C O N F I D E N T H AT W E A R E R ?

If you are not very confident about wearing a hat, go for something that is simple. You won’t feel as selfconscious if you are comfortable. I would recommend wearing a mini disc, as these are very easy to wear, as they are on a headband and add a little bit of height without being too over-the-top. Or a classic 50’s brim looks fantastic and effortless.
