Globetrotters Celebrate World Trick Shot Day with First-Ever “Skydiving Trick Shot”
Globetrotter Star Hammer Harrison dunks following 13,000foot skydive to pull off ultimate trick shot
ELOY – The world famous Harlem Globetrotters, who have made seemingly impossible trick shots part of their everyday repertoire, have once again put their shot-making expertise on center stage today to help celebrate the fourth annual World Trick Shot Day. In celebration of this year’s World Trick Shot Day, Globetrotter star Hammer Harrison successfully completed the highest slam dunk ever attempted, skydiving from 13,000 feet at Skydive Arizona in Eloy, Ariz., before successfully slamming home a dunk just before landing. The shot can be seen here: https://youtu.be/ evMG2atXH2c
LAW & ORDER:
World Trick Shot Day was created by the Globetrotters in order to give fans around the world a chance to celebrate what they can do with a basketball, a hoop and some creativity. Three years ago, the Registrar at National Day Calendar officially declared “World Trick Shot Day,” which is celebrated on the first Tuesday of every December. This is the second straight year Hammer has successfully completed an amazing shot for World Trick Shot Day. Last year, he dunked off the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, a shot of over 850

AZGFD investigating poaching of black bear north of Woods Canyon Lake
Reward offered for information leading to an arrest The Arizona Game and Fish Department is investigating the poaching of a female black bear that was killed between Nov. 1 and Nov. 6 north of Woods Canyon Lake in Game Management Unit 4A. The bear was killed and dumped off of Forest Road 169 east of Forest Road 300. The poacher attempted to hide the animal and left the meat to waste. Physical evidence was recovered from the scene. “Someone may have information about this case,” said Arizona Game and Fish Department Wildlife Manager Seth Sheer. “We need assistance from the public to find the individual(s) responsible. This is the action of a criminal — it’s
theft of wildlife resources from the people of Arizona. No true sportsman would leave game in the field to rot.” At the time the poaching occurred, there were active hunts, many hunters were scouting for upcoming hunts, and other outdoor recreationists were in the area, meaning someone may have seen something or have valuable information about this crime. Anyone with information about this case can call AZGFD’s Operation Game Thief hotline at (800) 352-0700 or visit www. azgfd.com/ogt and refer to case #19-003917. Callers may remain anonymous upon request and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,500 in this case upon arrest.

have long been affected by access to water and control of water resources. Human creativity and resourcefulness provide new ways of protecting water resources and renewing respect for the natural environment. Designed for small-town museums, libraries, and cultural organizations, “Water/Ways” will serve as a community meeting place to convene conversations about water’s impact on American culture. To complement the Smithsonian exhibit, Black Canyon Heritage Park has facilitated a team of local organizations and volunteers to develop a local Agua Fria Watershed display to raise people’s understanding about what water means culturally, socially and spiritually in the region. “Water is an important part of everyone’s life and we are excited to explore what it means culturally, socially and spiritually in our own community,” said Bob Cothern, Black Canyon Heritage Park Chair. “We want

Groups Say New Federal Law Gives Leg up in Fight Against Animal Cruelty BY AMY-XIAOSHI DEPAOLA CRONKITE NEWS
WASHINGTON – Arizona ranks high on the list of “most humane states,” but officials and animal advocates are still welcoming a new federal law they said will let them fight animal cruelty that crosses state lines. “Our officers investigate thousands of animal cruelty cases each year, but have been unable to truly bring justice for the animals in instances when the cruelty occurs across multiple jurisdictions,” said Chris Schindler, Humane Rescue Alliance’s vice president of field services, in an email. President Trump on Monday signed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, a bipartisan measure that expands on a 2010 law that banned the creation and distribution of “animal crush videos” – any image that shows animals being “intentionally crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury.”
Animal-welfare advocates in Arizona are welcoming the signing this week of the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which they say will help in the fight against interstate animal cruelty.
The 2019 version, introduced in January by Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., makes animal crushing itself a crime punishable by a fine or up to seven years in prison or both. It passed the House in October and was approved by the Senate earlier this month, both
times by voice vote. Schindler called the act “a monumental step” to laying groundwork to further protect animals, particularly in dealing with interstate animal cruelty. Bretta Nelson, public relations manager of the Arizona Humane Society, said the bill will “expand awareness of animal
cruelty on a national level” and hold abusers accountable. It comes as the Arizona Humane Society has seen a 3.9% increase in animal cruelty reports this year over last year. Nelson attributed that in part to H.B. 2671, a state law that took effect in August stiffening penalties for knowingly mistreating or killing a domestic animal from a class 6 to a class 5 felony, which carries up to two years in prison. The bill was the result of a 4-year Humane Society effort and a “huge win for Valley animals and for the state of Arizona,” Nelson said. She said there’s already a case under the stricter law involving a pug, Miso, that was hanged by his owner, who shared videos of the abuse from his cell phone. That prompted the Humane Society to take in the dog, which had suffered multiple injuries including a broken pelvis and ribs. Kellye Pinkleton, the Humane Society’s senior state director in Arizona, said the state also toughened animal cruelty laws last year and approved a
ban on wildlife killing contests in September. Pinkleton hopes those changes can help boost Arizona from its current spot of ninth, tied with Maine, on the Humane Society of the United States’ list of the most-humane states in 2018. When it released those rankings, however, the Humane Society of the United States said Arizona needed to work on farm animal cruelty, hunting restrictions, animal research and puppy mill abuses, and requiring state emergency response plans to include pets. spokeswoman for the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Amanda Ventura, , said there still is room for improvement in the law. She and Nelson would like to see the state take stronger action against so-called “puppy mills” and improve the definition of adequate care when it comes to food and water standards for animals. “Our law enforcement

Community Events Everyone Counts for Census 2020 The census is coming in 2020. The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to conduct a census count every 10 years. Cities and states rely on these population counts to determine what state-shared revenue they will receive. This money is used to fund essential city services like public safety, roads, parks, hospitals and schools. Each person counted is worth $3,000 in public services. For the first time ever, individuals can respond to the census online and by phone or mail. Counts begin on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, which is National Census Day. What can you get for a buck? How about a house in Italy? For one dollar. Yes, it is true. And I am buying one. There are several small towns in Italy enticing folks to buy homes so they can boost their population and keep the towns running and thriving. Well, I have never been to Italy and since I want to go, purchasing a house for a dollar seems like a good idea. Maybe. My husband, Doug, says I have lost my marbles. (Dash my dreams). My realtor friend said that I should buy 100 homes and then sell them for 100 dollars each.! (Developer?) My grandson in the Navy said it is a hoax and I am not going to Italy to get kidnapped or worse. (Worry wart) My girlfriend said it was a great idea and I should buy a house for each family member and give it to them for Christmas. (Brilliant).
Ollolai is a mountain region in Italy. Sambuca and Mussomeli are in Sicily and Zungoli is near Naples. They all have one- dollar houses for sale. Okay, so there is a catch. You have to come in with an insurance or security deposit of around $2500 and then commit to renovating the house within a set timeframe. Often three or four years. Guess the devil is in the details. It seems most of these homes are in desperate need of restoration. Thick stone, crumbling walls, bathrooms that might not work, the “dollar houses” are pretty run down and a fix-up of major proportions. It would take a whole lot of dollaros, lire or Euros to refurbish one of these houses. Still, imagine the “fun” of fixing up an old Italian villa! Couples from around the world have been giving testimonial to how buying a home for a dollar was “lifechanging.” Okay, for some it became a frightening adventure. I have run out of shopping ideas for Christmas! Although, I am a big fan of shopping local, I often end up giving gift cards because I am never sure what else to get. Imagine my family’s surprise when they open their
cards and see a deed to house in Italy! Ha! Just when they thought I might be doing the same old boring thing – this will shock them. One year I bought an acre of land on the moon for each grandson. They were pretty amazed when they opened up the Christmas envelopes containing “deeds” to lunar land! Yep, you can now own a plot of land on the moon, Mars or Venus. Called Celestial Sales, the company states that there is nothing stopping individual land claims on the planets. So far, about five million lunar acres have been sold! You get a deed, plat map and each acre is “guaranteed” to have a wonderful view of Earth. Back to Italy. When I told Doug my idea of gifting houses as Christmas presents, he did have a good laugh. He even suggested I wrap up an ItalianEnglish dictionary along with the house deed. Use Year-end Bonus (or Gift) Wisely Here are a few suggestions:
BY SARAH FINELLI OF EDWARD JONES
As 2019 draws to a close, you may be anticipating – or have already received – a yearend bonus from your employer. Or you might be receiving a substantial cash gift for the holidays. (If you’re really lucky, you might get both.) You can doubtlessly think of many ways to spend this money right now, but how can you use it to help yourself in the long run?
• Pay off some debts. Virtually all of us carry some type of debt, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. For example, your mortgage not only gives you a place to live and a chance to build equity in your home, but the interest payments are typically tax deductible. Other debts, though, such as those on consumer items, are not so positive – you generally can’t deduct the interest payments, and the items themselves probably won’t enhance your personal wealth. Plus, the bigger your monthly debt payments, the less you’ll have to invest for your future. So, you might want to use your bonus or monetary gift to pay off, or at least pay down, some of your less productive debts.
• Start an emergency fund. If you were to face a large, unexpected expense, such as the need for a new furnace or a major car repair, how would you pay for it? If you didn’t have the cash on hand, you might be forced to dip in to your long-term investments, such as your stocks and mutual funds. A much better option is to build an emergency fund, containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. It will take time to build such a fund, of course, but your year-end bonus or gift money could give you a good start. • Contribute to your IRA. You can put in up to $6,000 to your IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. And
although you’ve got until April 15, 2020, to fully fund your IRA for the 2019 tax year, you still might want to put your “extra” money into your account right away. If you wait, you’ll probably find other uses for this money. And if you’re going to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you’ll need to maximize every possible resource – and your IRA is one of your best ones. Furthermore, the sooner you get the money into your IRA, the more potential it will have to grow over time. • Feed your college fund. If you’re already contributing to a college fund for your young children or grandchildren, you can use your year-end bonus or monetary gift to add to the
fund. If you haven’t already started such an account, you might want to use this money for that purpose. You could open a 529 plan, which provides possible tax benefits and gives you control of the funds until it’s time for them to be used for college or some type of vocational school. (Depending on where you live, you might also get tax benefits from your state if you use a 529 savings plan to pay for K-12 expenses.) To achieve all your financial goals, you’ll need to take advantage of your opportunities – and your year-end bonus or monetary gift can certainly be one of them.

The Stick You Need to Know About BY SHEA STANFIELD
“Imagine creating music on a stringed instrument that is simultaneously a guitar, a bass, a piano, and percussion. Add unlimited electronic capabilities and forward-thinking playing techniques for ultimate expression. Now, design a tuning to make navigation of the instrument amazingly simple, and streamline the look and feel for optimal accessibility. This instrument already exists as the Chapman Stick.” Steve Adelson, Guitar Player magazine. Yes, 1969 was the year of innovation, today in 2019; Arizona is the home of one of the instrument’s foremost experts Michael Kollwitz. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Michael’s family relocated to Riverside, CA when he was 5 where he grew up with fun, sun and endless tunes. The family loved music, exhibiting their passion with a large and diverse collection of vinyl records that would make even the most astute collector envious. One of Michael’s favorite artists was Arthur Lyman, the Hawaiian percussionist. During high school Michael became quite proficient in playing the trumpet, participating in marching band
and jazz band. After high school Michael took a job in a music store where his music education grew expediential. One day, while flipping through a trade magazine, Michael came across an advertisement for The Stick. Intrigued with the synthesizers of the day, Michael was fascinated with the simple new instrument with the universal sound. The inventor of The Stick, Emmett Chapman, performed at a small coffee house near the University of California at Riverside so Michael made the trip to attend his performance. That was it: he was hooked! A few months ‑‑later Michael was the proud owner of one of Emmett Chapman’s Sticks. During the period between 1976-1986 Michael took lessons from Emmett and accompanied the inventor to demonstrations of his new instrument at NAMM musical instrument trade show and the ‘US’ Festivals in Glen Helen, CA. Michael also developed a professional sales career in the two-way radio industry traveling the western states of CA, NV, NM, and AZ. During this time Michael also managed 2-3 performances a month with The Stick. Finally,
in 2003, with the downturn of the telecom sector his career in the radio industry came to an end but this presented an opportunity to move into performance, composition, and recording full time. Today, Michael calls Sedona home. He operates a home recording studio where he produces his music. Michael also favors the outdoor environment of Northern Arizona for the inspiring landscapes and natural sounds, often using the sound spaces, of an area, as a cocreator of his compositions. In Michael’s opinion, “The Stick is the most expressive and versatile musical instrument ever devised. It is almost limitless in its possibilities. It is plays more like a piano than a guitar. Plus, it allows me to create huge polychords like a keyboardist and add the expressive elements of a stringed instrument like guitar and violin at the same time.” Emmett Chapman has outfitted Michael’s instruments with a unique pickup that allows him to interface with guitar synthesizers adding many layers of sonic mystery. Adding to the mix along the way Michael has picked up recording techniques from
a Grammy award winning Steely Dan engineer in Maui and producer Clarke Rigsby in Tempe. Recently, Michael has recorded collaborations with Electronic Wind Instrument player Walton Mendelson from Prescott. The ‘EWI’ is also a little-known instrument developed in the U.S. in the 1970s. The instrument plays like a clarinet, it incorporates all the expressive qualities of a wind instrument with the sounds produced by a synthesizer. Look forward to the release of an entire album of original

Peoria Fire-Medical 2019 Awards Banquet PEORIA - The Peoria FireMedical Department held its annual awards banquet on Friday, November 22, 2019 at the Rio Vista Recreation Center. The event included dinner and speeches from Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne, and Peoria Fire Chief Bobby Ruiz.
2019 Johnny Valentine Award recipient Greg Bury
Included in the awards presented, were the two most prestigious awards the department gives: Firefighter of the Year and the Johnny Valentine Award. Each year the Johnny Valentine Award is given to the sworn member who best epitomizes the Peoria Fire-Medical Department’s core values; team, trust, professionalism and efficiency. Johnny Valentine was a Peoria firefighter who served the citizens of Peoria until his un-timely death from brain cancer in 1996. This year’s recipient of the Johnny Valentine Award was Firefighter Greg Bury, who was nominated by Battalion Chief Tony Neely and Captain Danny Comella. In his nomination address Captain Comella noted, “Greg emulates the same qualities as Johnny, his work ethic with our new people is
arrived on scene to find heavy fire conditions and near zero visibility from the smoke. While performing a search and rescue in the mobile home Firefighter Parks found an unconscious victim, who he successfully removed from the structure. Retired Battalion Chief Steve Kelley was the incident commander at that fire and nominated Parks for the award. “His actions that day saved this woman’s life,” Kelley said of Parks.
In addition to the Johnny Valentine Award, and Firefighter of the Year Award, approximately 60 other firefighters and civilian staff were honored for their contributions over the past year. Included in the awards were; Letters of Recognition, Civilian of the Year, EMS Provider of the Year, Meritorious Service Awards, Fire Chief Awards, Unit Citations, Medals of Honor, and Medals of Valor.

Nelson said the Arizona Humane Society mainly sees cases of animals without water, shelter or welfare checks, as well as being stabbed, shot or left in hot cars. “As awareness of these laws increase across the country, people will think twice before inflicting harm upon an animal,” she said. “This will be a national discussion for animals who have no voice.”

Arizona Department of Revenue Remaining Vigilant in Combating Tax Identity Theft Three Examples of Busted Schemes Showcase Issue Identity thieves continue to look for ways to victimize taxpayers including phishing schemes, card-skimming devices, unsecure Wi-Fi networks, data breaches, computer viruses, unsafe smartphone apps, and hacking email accounts. The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) treats detecting and stopping fraud with paramount importance. ADOR is continuing to combat the evolving landscape of fraud and identity theft through enhanced staff training, and by adapting new countermeasures like advanced analytics with machine learning and artificial intelligence. The agency’s fraud prevention system has stopped more than $120 million in fraudulent income tax refunds since 2015. Below are three tax identity schemes intercepted by ADOR that attempted to defraud Arizona taxpayers: William Scheme: Fraudsters filed 600 refund requests over three months requesting $300,000 in bogus
refunds. All the tax returns, which were submitted from Florida, used stolen identities of deceased men with the first name of “William.” Miami Scheme: Fraudsters mailed 850 fraudulent tax returns between 2015 and 2019 requesting $500,000 in bogus refunds. All envelopes had similar handwriting patterns and were postmarked in Miami, Florida. The stolen identities were typically deceased residents of other states with fictitious Arizona addresses and wages. Ides of March Scheme: Fraudsters started submitting returns electronically in February 2019, but after these refunds were denied, the fraudsters then switched to submitting paper returns in March 2019. None of the taxpayers lived or worked in Arizona. In total, ADOR identified 18 bogus tax returns requesting $17,000 and were able to link the electronic and paper submissions from characteristics on the returns that were then flagged for further inspection.

Vets USA and 4H benefit from YCSO’s No Shave Fundraising Campaign PRESCOTT - The YCSO No Shave campaign began in October with the chosen beneficiary being the US Vets facility in Prescott. https://www. usvetsinc.org/prescott/. This wonderful organization is a private non-profit providing housing, employment and counseling services to our nation’s veterans. The Prescott facility serves over 150 veterans each year. Monies were gratefully accepted by Matthew Phillips, US Vets Development & Communication Manager in Prescott “Many of our vets have made the ultimate sacrifice and we should remember to honor all vets who return home from military service. It is because of their selfless service that we have secured the liberties and freedoms afforded to all of us. The least we can do, especially during the holiday season, is to raise money to provide services for those vets less fortunate and even homeless. said Sheriff Mascher. "With the anticipated weather issues in Yavapai County, this service will be needed more than ever. I am privileged, along with participating employees from the Sheriff ’s Office, to give $2730 dollars to US Vets that was donated during the month of October.”

When Cristiano Artigas visits patient Maria Estrada Hernandez at her west Phoenix home, the Hospice of the Valley chaplain has one goal: To move her focus away from her pain as he comforts her and prays for her in Spanish, their native language. “How is your heart?â€? he asks her. “Spiritual support is very important; without it, we’re empty‌ I’ll sing for you like I always do.â€? “Oh, how beautiful!â€? exclaims the 63-year-old mother of eight with 21 loving grandchildren. The Mexican native is in awe as Artigas sings “Pescador de Hombres,â€? said to be Pope John Paul’s favorite hymn. When her family reached out to Hospice of the Valley, Hernandez had no idea what to expect. She especially did not expect that a Spanish-speaking chaplain would be part of her care team. Artigas is helping change that for the not-for-profit organization, which has never turned anyone away in 42 years. “In the Hispanic community, this concept of hospice care with spiritual support is new,â€? he tells Hernandez. “As a not-for-profit, Hospice of the Valley has the ability to support the Hispanic community, with or without insurance. We feel happy we can support these families.â€?
grieving the loss of a love one, she says. Denneny, who has been with the agency for 14 years, and also teaches “Muerte, Religion y Espiritualidad to Spanishspeaking volunteers who provide patient companionship to patients. The way she sees it, “Doctors and nurses take care of the body, chaplains take care of the mind and soul. To learn more about Hospice of the Valley, visit hov.org or call 602-530-6900. Lin Sue Cooney is director of community engagement at Hospice of the Valley.
As Artigas explains, “Our job is not a job, it’s a calling.â€?  It’s a sentiment shared by all Hospice of the Valley chaplains, including David Kaminski, who agrees that being bilingual is critical to reaching families who say Spanish is their first or only language. “It’s a privilege to comfort them in such a time of need. Discussions of this tender nature are more meaningful when they hear it directly in their own language.â€? Maria Denneny, is also bilingual and bicultural. “I love being able to provide support when families are facing a crisis or at the time of death, or And supporting patients like Hernandez often means being culturally sensitive— not only speaking Spanish-- but understanding that Hispanic families often misunderstand what “hospice careâ€? means. Many falsely believe that hospice is a “placeâ€? patients go to die‌ rather than a “philosophy of careâ€? that helps patients in the home and supports family caregivers. Artigas and other bilingual chaplains at Hospice of the Valley, are in a unique position to correct that misperception. Born in Nicaragua, Artigas did his studies in the U.S. He has a bachelor’s degree in teaching, a master’s in theology and a doctor of ministry. He moved
to Phoenix to start a Hispanic ministry and is a pastor at Santo Tomas Lutheran Church. The Desert Storm veteran and former Army chaplain was recruited to Hospice of the Valley 16 years ago by Jean Marie Stockton, director of clinical services in the West Valley.  “Cristiano is all about a deep connection to the patients and families he serves. I have seen him in action and people immediately sense his compassion and concern for their well-being. He uses his singing to soothe and inspire. That soothing effect was evident from the moment 66-year old Artigas greeted Hernandez, one of about 1,500 Hispanic patients served by Hospice of the Valley.

Once “bumping” the NFC chip or scanning the QR code, shoppers will be directed to a custom donation page that accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay options, as well as a credit card payment option. Online gifts will be distributed to local Salvation Army units based on the donor’s billing ZIP
code, and an email receipt will be sent directly to his or her mobile device. “Kettle Pay makes it even easier for donors to join The Salvation Army’s ‘Fight for Good,’” said Major David Yardley, The Salvation Army Southwest Division General Secretary. “It provides an opportunity for people to fight for the thousands of Arizonans experiencing poverty by raising

World Trick Shot Day was created to not only pay homage to the fun and entertaining aspect of the trick shot, but also to invite and engage with fans from all over the world to get in on the act as well. By using the hashtag, #WorldTrickShotDay, trick shot artists everywhere can share their attempts at oneof-a-kind moves across social media. Additionally, the Globetrotters will reward some of the best submissions with tickets to their 2020 “Pushing the Limits World Tour. “We work on trick shots every day, though the skydive trick shot is not one of them, laughed Harrison, who enters his 11th season with the Globetrotters in 2020. “We practice them because it’s such a thrill for us, and for our fans. Our fans give us such great feedback when we post them. We love getting the chance to see what they can do, too. The Globetrotters have made trick shots a staple of their repertoire for much of their 94-year history, beginning with greats such as Goose Tatum, Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal, and continuing through with today’s Globetrotter stars, who own 22 current Guinness World Records and just weeks ago set six new marks.
The Globetrotters are currently preparing for 94th year of touring with the 2020 “Pushing the Limits World Tour, during which the team will play in more than 250 North American markets, as well as more than 30 countries worldwide.
