CAVE CREEK – Two women and a three-year-old boy were struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk near El Encanto restaurant in downtown Cave Creek on the evening of February 9.

Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office (MCSO) deputies were dispatched to Cave Creek Road and Linda Drive at approximately 6:30 p.m. when the driver, 69-year-old Janice Judy who is a resident of Cave Creek, allegedly failed to yield at the crosswalk, hitting the pedestrians.

NRDHCA expanding board to facilitate its new Daisy Mountain Alliance

NEW RIVER – The New River Desert Hills Community Association (NRDHCA) expanded its Board of Directors, appointing a new director at its January meeting, and intends on appointing another director later this month as part of its latest efforts to expand its impact on the region.

The expansion of NRDHCA’s Board of Directors will help facilitate its newly formed Daisy Mountain Area Action Alliance (DMAAA) and other new committees that were created to help preserve the unique, rural lifestyle of the regional

desert foothills communities surrounding Daisy Mountain.

“NRDHCA wanted more representation and thought it was a good time to expand to have a broader impact and more input focusing on the region at large,” NRDHCA President Ed Taylor said in a phone interview with The Foothills Focus last week about DMAAA and the expanded board. “There are a lot of issues the area is facing.”

Local bull scores time on Super Bowl LIII commercial

LAVEEN – A local bull from the Phoenix Valley named Spartan was featured during this year’s Super Bowl commercial for Sanderson Ford Arizona, and residents from Cave Creek might recognize the bovine turned star.

The five-year-old Super Bull is owned by Mercer Rodeo, which provides the Western entertainment and livestock for the Buffalo Chip’s live bull riding events in downtown, historic Cave Creek.

So if you’re a regular at the Buffalo Chip you might have seen the 1,500-pound bull live and in action – or even been bucked off of him.

It appears that the arena featured in the Super Bowl commercial is the Buffalo Chip, but The Foothills Focus could not confirm the information.

How Arizona national parks survived the longest government shutdown in U.S. history

More than 6 million people visit Grand Canyon National Park, and many will take in the view at Mather Point. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon remained partially open during the five-week federal government shutdown.

GRAND CANYON – Waiting for the sun to rise, visitors to Grand Canyon National Park quietly stood at Mather Point. By 7:45, sunbeams pierced the low clouds to illuminate the red rocks and the sparkling snow. Despite the partial federal government shutdown, which ended Jan. 25, for most visitors, the closure didn’t affect their experience.

Although Petrified Forest National Park closed during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Arizona’s two other national parks – Grand Canyon and Saguaro National Park – remained open with limited services. The visitor center at Grand Canyon was closed, but the Grand Canyon Conservancy bookstore, hotels and restaurants were open. It was a similar story at Saguaro.

But as of Monday, both parks were fully staffed, and it was business as usual, at least for the next three weeks while the debate over funding a southern-border wall continues in Washington, D.C. Park officials say Saguaro and Grand Canyon are recovering from the shutdown with limited damage, and they are prepared should another shutdown happen.

Robert “Bob” Beaver, 62, is pastor at the Grand Canyon Community Church in the village where National Park Service workers, concessionaires and other canyon employees live on the South Rim; he also works for the fire and security department in the canyon.

Beaver said the five-week long shutdown brought the community together through

a food bank and assistance program for furloughed workers.

The food bank, located in the residential recreation center, was restocked almost every day by St. Mary’s Food Bank in Flagstaff, according to employees.

Beaver said the government workers, concessionaires and other canyon staff love being at the Grand Canyon and have always taken good care of it.

“I think the average person who works here will pick up trash and stuff like that they see on the South Rim,” Beaver said.

“They’ll just do it naturally because who wants to destroy this beautiful canyon?

We have one of the most beautiful backyards of anybody in the United States, and we want to keep it clean.”

Unlike Joshua Tree National Park in California, where visitors vandalized trees and trash was left to pile up, Grand Canyon and Saguaro National Park didn’t have major issues with trash or destruction. Grand Canyon, a major economic driver in Arizona, had extra help from Gov. Doug Ducey, who last year issued an executive order to create the Grand Canyon Protection Plan.

The plan established what to do in case of a government shutdown, and how money transfers from the state to the U.S. Department of the Interior to fund necessary operations at Grand Canyon National Park, which in 2017 saw more than 6.2 million visitors from around the world and generated more than $666 million in revenue, park spokeswoman Emily Davis said.

This was the first time Ducey’s plan was used to keep Grand Canyon open.

The state spent $193,151.28 before the National Park Service issued a statement Jan. 6 that parks could use revenue funds to provide such services as trash pickup and waste disposal.

Saguaro National Park, near Tucson, also remained partly open during the shutdown. Roads and trails were accessible, according to a press release, but all visitor services were closed and there were limited emergency and rescue services. The park canceled all community events, including the annual Holiday Caravan program, scheduled from Dec. 22 through Jan. 25. The park did not have state funds to maintain trash and waste disposal, so community members stepped up, said Andy Fisher, chief of interpretation and public information officer for the park.

“We worked really hard here in Tucson to be a part of this community and to support this community and have felt very supported in return,” Fisher said.

Part of that help came through Friends of Saguaro National Park – a nonprofit fundraising partner of the National Park

Service. Fred Stula, executive director of the group, said they began picking up trash the day after Christmas.

Stula said he initially had three volunteers, but after stories about vandalism in Joshua Tree National Park went viral, the number of volunteers jumped up. With a Facebook post, about 30 volunteers pitched in to keep the park clean.

“The volunteers, for the most part, they would not volunteer just one time,” Stula said. “There were actually some really unique cases where there were people coming out here on vacation and they would call and say, ‘We’re coming out to hike in the park, is there any way we can help pick up trash or with any of the efforts because we really support what you guys are doing and love the park.’”

Stula estimated he and his volunteers collected about 20 trash bags per week.

“Saguaro is very much a community park,” he said. “The individuals here

Brrrr it’s cold!

Yes, even here in Arizona we have had a frosty, wet winter.

But it is sometimes hard to grasp the wrath of Antarctica weather that has been wreaking havoc on over 100 million Americans, causing them to shiver, shake and run for cover.

Baby it’s cold outside!

I was born in Cleveland and lived in Ohio for the first 26 years of my life. I think by the time I was 12 I knew that I was going to move to somewhere warmer.

Perhaps it was because I had to walk to school in frigid, windy, lung piercing weather.

Or maybe it was because my older brother got frostbite (while walking to school) on both of his ears and they looked like heads of cauliflowers. Ouch!

One woman was transported in stable condition to a local hospital, suffering multiple breaks in her hip and other injuries. The other woman and toddler refused transportation, but both suffered from minor injuries including road rash, according to MCSO Deputy Sgt. Calbert Gillett.

The victims were out-of-state visitors staying at a casita in Tumbleweed Hotel and they were all related.

The woman who was transported to the hospital visits Cave Creek every year.

Her daughter and grandson, who were the other victims, arrived on February 8, for their first time visiting the town, according to someone close with the victim who wished to

A writer in South Dakota pointed out that “winter brings out character.” Might be true.

But I am certain that winter brings out layers of clothing, goose-down jackets, face masks that only criminals should wear; thermal underwear, ear muffs, hats, wool socks and sturdy boots.

Character? Perhaps while shoveling snow it might feel like “only the tough can endure,” and provide a measure of solace.

After all, record-breaking cold spells don’t happen all the time and accepting the “bad” with the good is one way of coping. How else could so many people live through a summer in Phoenix unless it is “balanced” by a wonderful winter?

So, when a friend of mine in Ohio writes on Facebook that “weather is not everything” and there are far more important things in life than “a warm climate, sunny days and beautiful sunsets,” I have to agree.

Of course, there are more essential things in life than good weather.

There is golf in January; wearing shorts under clear, blue skies; taking walks on crisp winter mornings; playing tennis in the afternoon; or riding a horse on a sunny day in February.

Face masks?

Only unless we plan on engaging in a bank robbery!

Sunglasses?

Required.

Salt? Not on streets, just on margarita glasses.

The family was taking pictures of the sunset over El Encanto moments before they entered the crosswalk, the source said.

“She entered and they proceeded when it was clear,” the anonymous source said, while recounting the victim’s story with The Foothills Focus.

“She [the victim] told me it seems she [driver] came out of nowhere. She hit the hood and saw the woman. She landed on her hip. Her daughter went down, and grandson jolted from his mom’s arms.”

Judy was cited by MCSO for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Speed and impairment from drugs and alcohol were absolutely not a factor in the accident, so no field sobriety test was administered, according to MCSO. “It was dark,” MCSO Captain Dan Whelan said in a phone

interview. “She braked near the crosswalk but then proceeded because she did not see them.”

Cave Creek residents have showed an outpouring of support towards the victims bringing cards, flowers and well-wishes to the Tumbleweed Hotel.

The victim was released from the hospital on February 11, according to the victim's friends.

NVSO youth violin winner announced, will perform with it in March at 'Spring is in the Air' concert

PHOENIX – Phoenix resident, Haley McKeown, was recently announced as the winner of a new handmade violin, valued at over $5,000, after competing in North Valley

Symphony Orchestra’s (NVSO) annual Summerford Violin Concerto Competition.

Haley will perform Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in A minor on her new violin at NVSO’s

“Spring is in the Air” concert, on March 9, at 7 p.m., at North Canyon High School Performing Arts Auditorium, 1700 E. Union Hills Road.

“Until very recently, I had little experience playing on nonstudent grade instruments,” says Haley. “What excites me most about winning this violin is that this instrument will help me so much in chasing my dreams of playing with the Chicago Symphony one day.”

Haley began playing violin in fourth grade in her elementary school orchestra, and began private lessons just before entering fifth grade.

In middle school, she started a quartet with a few close friends, then joined North Valley Symphonettes as concertmaster.

She successfully auditioned into North Valley Youth Orchestra her freshman year, then into NVSO’s Adult Orchestra her senior year.

Peoria and ASU partner on local sustainability projects PEORIA – The city of Peoria is proud to be selected as the Community Partner for Project Cities, a new, innovative program at Arizona State University (ASU).

This is Project Cities’ third year coordinating project-based learning partnerships with Arizona towns and cities. Past partners Apache Junction and Glendale both noted that the students’ unique perspectives and dedication to solving challenges have invigorated city staff and driven community initiatives forward.

Students and Peoria city staff will commence their work together in August 2019. The

partnership is slated for the 2019-2020 academic year, with the possibility of extending up to an additional year for continuing projects that build on past semesters’ work.

She is currently principal second violin for North Valley Youth Orchestra and plays in the first violin section of the adult orchestra.

Haley had the honor of participating in Regional Honor Orchestra her last three years of high school, and played with the Paradise Valley Unified School District’s Honor Orchestra her senior year. She was a member of Tri-M while in high school, was concertmaster her senior year, and currently studies violin performance at Paradise Valley Community College.

Additionally, Haley plays in the pit orchestra for Valley Youth Theatre. She will transfer to ASU in the fall of 2019, pursing a degree in violin performance, or music education.

This year’s violin competition was held on January 27.

The prize violin is donated every year by local resident Jody

Summerford, who recognizes the work that the NVSO artistic staff is doing to nurture and develop young musicians in the Phoenix community.

Summerford was nominated by the Arizona Citizens for the Arts for a Governor’s Award recognizing his philanthropic work for NVSO in 2017.

NVSO wishes to invite young strings players to join one of NVSO’s youth orchestras for the 2019-20 concert season.

Auditions for North Valley Youth Strings and North Valley Youth Orchestra will be scheduled May 19 and June 1-2. No audition is required for North Valley Symphonettes.

Anthem husband and wife team launch deliciously inspirational, spiritual chocolate business ANTHEM – Long-time Anthem residents Edmundo and Amanda Osorio are the husband and wife team behind Promise Chocolates.

Everything is NOT awesome with the happy residents of Bricksburg, especially the happy-go-lucky master builder Emmett who saved the toy-inspired universe in the standout hit from 2014.

The masterminds, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller return to write the script and are behind the origin story for these toys turned movie characters, but new director Mike Mitchell takes over directing duties.

This doesn’t matter too much because the formula hasn’t changed between the different Lego franchises.

Emmett (Chris Pratt) saved the city of Bricksburg from President Business. Just before they could celebrate their victory, a cutesy alien Lego society descends from the sky and turns the bright shining world into a dystopian, Mad Max-esque wasteland.

The aliens destroy everything that has and will be made, leaving the citizens of Bricksburg to live in fear of building anything new or shiny.

Things get worse when all the great warriors and leaders are kidnapped: Lucy (Elizabeth Banks); Batman (Will Arnett);

THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART Director: Mike Mitchell Starring: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish, Stephanie Beatriz, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Charlie Day, and Maya Rudolph Monte’s Rating: 3.50 out of 5.00 Benny (Charlie Day); Unikitty (Alison Brie); and Metalbeard (Nick Offerman) are all captured leaving Emmett to venture into the unknown after them.

Much of the appeal and charm for these Lego films has come from the use of humor and the inclusion of pop culture referencing throughout nearly every frame of the film.

Where else are going to find “Jurassic Park” velociraptors, every member of the Justice League from DC Comics and John McClane from “Die Hard”in the same movie, sometimes at the same time?

The fact that these sometimes subtle, mostly blatant nods to pop culture come

off so delightfully is quite impressive.

Helping make these interesting crossovers come to life are the exceptional voice actors.

Firstly, Will Arnett’s low baritone Batman steals the show, it’s easy to see why this character received a spinoff feature.

Tiffany Haddish plays the morphing evil alien queen wreaking havoc on the Lego universe. Ms. Haddish has such a unique cadence and rhythm in her dialog, it’s easy to laugh and smile even when a joke isn’t being pushed into the narrative.

Unfortunately, the two leads, Emmett and Lucy, have a narrative that is

stifled by poor character development and a strange over saturation of Pratt’s vocal work.

The second act of the film is consumed

by Emmett and Rex Dangervest, a new character who embraces the solitude life of a hero on a spaceship run by dinosaurs.

These two characters are voiced by Mr. Pratt but the storyline for why they come together brings the pacing of the film to a halt trying to add some kind of mystery that is building; which surprisingly accomplishes enough with the other characters throughout to remain a kindhearted.

“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” isn’t as awesome as the first installment, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not good.

Underneath the story of an alien invasion, forced wedding nuptials and catchy songs that ruin your mind, there is a story about brothers and sisters being kind to one another, accepting childhood for as long as possible.

It’s a sweet sentiment when the film transitions into the “real” world and not the Lego world. So, while everything may NOT be awesome, this film still has all the workings of a good family film worth the trip to the movies.

Thousands of accidents and fatalities fuel statewide training push PEORIA – Last year, more than 3,000 motorcyclists were maimed or killed in crashes on Arizona roads. Yet, the number of riders and registrations keeps climbing.

At Grand Canyon, it was a similar story. Park officials and visitors say the trails were clean and most visitors seemed

to follow the rules, aside from some snowy footprints near the edge were visitors ignored the railings at Mather Point.

requests and public safety issues.

Although the NRDHCA or DMAAA has no legislative or governing power, it plans on being an action-oriented collaborative effort that will inform the community about important issues. While also working with stakeholders to find beneficial solutions, according to Taylor.

“Things are growing out here and we want to grow with it,” he said of the group's expansion.

Julie Elliott, who is also a member leading the New River Desert Hills Water group attempting to form a domestic water improvement district (DWID), was appointed to the NRDHCA Board of Directors on January 22.

Her nomination took the board from seven members to eight members, which upset some residents because having an even number of board members is against NRDHCA’s bylaws.

The NRDCHA’s bylaws state that the board must consist of not less than five persons and not more than 11 persons, and that the total number of board members must be an odd number.

“It was just a timing issue,” explained Taylor, who went on to say that NRDHCA intended to appoint two members, but the other person the board wanted to nominate was out of town during the January meeting.

“Julie was at the meeting, so it was convenient.”

NRDHCA will nominate John Williams at the next board meeting on February 26, and Taylor anticipates he will be appointed, which will resolve the current issue of having an even number of board members.

“People are going to think what they want to think,” Taylor said, referring to some individuals stating on social media that NRDHCA was operating as a rogue organization with no regard to its own bylaws.

However, a source on background that is involved with NRDHIC claims that the DMAAA was created partly to counteract the recent efforts to incorporate the area into an official municipality.

“We are unaffected by their [DMAAA] actions, this association will be as ineffective as the NRDHCA. This is why we are pursuing incorporation to give our residents a voice and control over their destiny,” the source stated.

Affiliates of NRDHIC say that many members of the DMAAA have been very vocal about their opposition to their incorporation efforts, especially on social media groups.

But Taylor says that is just simply not true, and that NRDHIC is focused only on a small portion of the area DMAAA is actively addressing, which is all the communities surrounding Daisy Mountain.

Also, that some comments in question by NRDHIC have been taken out of context.

“The NRDHCA is not for or against the incorporation group,” Taylor stated in an email to The Focus on February 8. “We support the process that gives all residents the chance to decide for themselves how they want to be governed.”

He went on to say, “NRDHCA is well respected by city, state and county officials and is the current vehicle to help those officials guide the inevitable area growth in a responsible manner.”

NRDHCA and DMAAA invites anyone interested in becoming involved to attend its next meeting on February 26, at 7 p.m. at the Crossroads Church, 42425 N. New River Road.

Recognizing our own spirit and meaning

Raku pottery, the ceremonial tea ware made for Zen Buddhist Masters of the 16th century is valued for its simplicity and beauty.

Today the Art of Raku occupies present ceramic style in stunning, awe-inspiring, and insightful ways through the work of master ceramist Myron Whitaker.

Born in Kannapolis, N.C., Myron credits his mother as his first “influencer” in the realm of a solid work ethic.

When it came to firing up his creative spirit Myron credits two high school art teachers, Martha Foster, and Brenda Hardin, both of which he remains in contact with today.

Myron’s high school ceramics classes were the foundation to a life long passion with clay. He continued his creative and technique development by attending classes focused on advanced techniques and processes of pottery production.

During this time Myron also accepted employment

with Freightliner building 18-wheeler trucks to support his young family.

After 15 years in the corporate world of trucking Myron, at the age 44, returned to school at Montgomery Community College in Troy, N.C., with the encouragement of one of his former teachers.

There he discovered he had never lost his passion or gift for ceramics.

Several years ago a friend suggested Myron participate in the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale.

He filled out an application and as he describes it, “To my surprise I was accepted, so it was off to Scottsdale from January through March.”

Myron’s reputation grew to the point a few years later he joined the Sonoran Arts League and became a participant in the Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour that takes place the last two weekends of November each year.

As a result he now maintains two ceramic studios, one in North Carolina and one in Arizona where he spends approximately six months each year working in one or the other.

Myron’s work is in the traditional spirit of the Raku process. His is inspired by the clean lines of nature, the edge of a leaf, the branch of a tree. The jewel tones of the southwest sunset are in his glazes.

It is said that the spirit of the maker is also incorporated into the Raku shape completing its inclusive and organic process.

Evidence of this is present in Myron’s designs by incorporating rare stones, fossils, cactus spines and other unique organic objects, resulting in unexpected compositional shapes and an inclusiveness of the local environment.

Interim Principal announced at Horseshoe Trails School CAVE CREEK – The Superintendent of the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD), Dr. Debbi Burdick, recently announced that she will be recommending to the district governing board that Mr. Aaron Pettinato be named Horseshoe Trails Elementary School’s Interim Principal for the remainder of the school year.

Pettinato has been a CCUSD employee since 2006.

He began his career as a student teacher in a fourth and fifth grade combination classroom at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School (HTES).

He taught fifth and sixth grades at HTES from 2006 to 2016. He was named Dean of Students at Cactus Shadows High School in 2016.

Janiene Marlow, Director of Human Resources and HTES Planning Principal said, "I am so proud and happy for him.

He has two masters degrees, one in elementary education and a second in educational leadership from Arizona State University (ASU).

CAVE CREEK – On February 6, at approximately 5:30 a.m. the Rural Metro Fire Department (RMFD) responded to a report of a minivan stuck in a flooded wash flowing from recent winter rains near 52nd Street and Cahava Ranch Road in Cave Creek.

The vehicle had three adult women inside the vehicle that was located about 10 to 20 feet off the west bank of the flowing creek. RMFD firefighters could not access the minivan from the east bank where its swift water team and crew members were located, according to first responders involved with the rescue.

A spokesman with RMFD says that the fire department requested the assistance of Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office’s (MCSO) Fox helicopter, in an attempt to lift the victims out of the creek. However, due to the location and other hazards the helicopter could not access the minivan.

“MCSO helicopter airlifted Rural Metro crew members to the opposite bank. These crew members, trained in swift water rescue tactics, entered the water and rescued the three occupants one at a time,” RMFD Public Information Officer Shawn Gilleland stated in an email to The Foothills Focus on February 7.

The water rescue took about two hours and the rescue team consisted of four members. There were also spotters up and downstream from the vehicle, six to eight RMFD firefighters, an EMT and paramedics on scene during the rescue.

All three victims, whose names have not been released, were assessed and treated for mild hypothermia, but no one was transported to the hospital.

Gilleland stated. “I believe the subjects were visitors and may have not been familiar with the dangers and history of flooding in that area.”

No citation was issued to the driver under Arizona’s “Stupid Motorist Law,” which prohibits drivers from trying to cross barricaded, flooded washes, and could make a person liable for their rescue expenses, according to MCSO. “A citation was not issued because there were no posted signs or barricades,” MCSO Sergeant Bryant Vanegas stated in an email to The Focus.

RMFD always recommends that people heed the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” motto when encountering flooded washes while driving.

“We very grateful that there were no injuries and that we were able to utilize the training we have done in the past with MCSO and our swift water rescue trainers to safely rescue these ladies,” Gilleland said.

CORRECTION: EPCOR interim water rates The Foothills Focus would like to issue a correction for a story that published in our recent print edition on February 6, 2019, that appeared on the front page titled “Anthem water rate increase as EPCOR files interim rates.”

The article stated that interim water rates for EPCOR customers in Anthem increased on February 1.

That is incorrect, interim water rates have not increased yet and will not increase until it is approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission at a hearing on February 20.

If the commission approves EPCOR’s

interim rate of imposing a $2.65 surcharge per thousand gallons of water, then the interim rates could be backdated to be effective February 1.

Also, the article stated that Kristi Northcutt served as the team lead in the EPCOR case, but that was incorrect, and the position was held by Anthem’s Board President Roger Willis. Willis intervened on Anthem’s behalf regarding the ongoing rate case and Northcutt supported Willis’ role.

The Focus apologizes for any confusion this may have caused readers.
