CAREFREE – Two serious motorcycle accident occurred in the north Phoenix Valley on Friday, March 1, leaving one motorcyclist driver dead and others critically injured.

The first accident occurred in the afternoon at the intersection of Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway.

Motorcyclist Harry Stephens, 49, entered the intersection at Greenway Parkway headed northbound on Cave Creek Road when it collided with a Toyota Corolla, according to

Stephens had a 22-yearold female passenger on his motorcycle at the time of the collision and both were thrown from the bike, with Stephens being pronounced dead on the scene, according to reports.

Other local media outlets have reported that both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Also, that the woman was transported to an area hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

100 years: Grand Canyon National Park celebrates the past, readies for the future

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE – It’s a cold winter night along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and as she shuffles through the fresh snow, Abbie Smith can’t think of a better place to celebrate New Year’s Eve. As midnight strikes, the Mesa resident is overjoyed to be staying in the park that has reached its centennial year.

She and her friend of six years, Anne Kenison of Gilbert, are just two of more than 6 million people from around the world who enjoy the canyon’s natural splendors each year.

Both of them recognize that while visiting Grand Canyon allows them a place to escape, all visitors share a responsibility to preserve the park, which faces challenges in how to manage all those people while protecting the park for future generations.

Smith and Kenison, who bonded over their love for national parks and Arizona, used the park’s 100th anniversary to launch a yearlong quest to try 100 new things at the park. So far, they’ve hiked into the canyon, eaten dinner at the Grand Canyon Lodge and braved the cold to take in the view at Yaki Point.

At each checkpoint, the women write the accomplishment on a whiteboard, snap a selfie and move on to the next adventure.

The journey of a lifetime Smith’s love of national parks began at a young age.

“I grew up going to national parks as family vacations,” Smith said. “I have a love for natural places and national parks. I have a picture of me at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon when I was really little.”

But it wasn’t until Smith and Kenison went to hear photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko, who traveled more than 750 miles within the Grand Canyon to raise awareness about sustainability, speak at a National Geographic live event that they decided to get to know the canyon better.

“I know it’s four hours away, but it’s still my backyard,” Smith said.

The project is more than just checking off things to do, she said.

“It centers me,” Smith said. “It grounds me. It makes me reflect on my life. … I’m disconnected from things that don’t matter and connected to the things that do. It’s easy to just turn things off and just tune into other senses and the

canyon itself. It is an amazing place. It’s unfathomable.”

The canyon’s popularity with visitors has led to an increase in traffic over the past few decades, she said, making the push for sustainable efforts at the park more urgent.

“I think protecting the resources at the park allows our future generations to also have spaces where they can disconnect from computers, from screens and the pressures of everyday life in a beautiful place that makes them feel grounded,” Smith said.

McBride, who is passionate about park preservation, hiked the entire length of the Grand Canyon in one year to raise awareness for the challenges facing this natural treasure, which President Theodore Roosevelt called “absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world.”

“It’s not a bucket-list item that we check off for luxury and convenience,” McBride said. “It’s a place that requires you to get away from your vehicle, embrace its silence, appreciate its night sky, be aware of its remarkable biodiversity, and not its geological history but also its archeological history.”

He said threats to the park include a proposal to build a tourist gondola across the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers, ongoing uranium mining and a huge expansion of helicopter tourism at the park.

There are nearly 120,000 commercial flights every year, according to 2016 data from the park.

“If it continues the way it is, we’re not going to leave the park the way it is,” McBride said. “It would set aside what has been called ‘America’s best idea’ to create these national parks and leave them for the next generation. It would be sad to change it in the name of making a profit for a small number of people.

Although Native American tribes who live in the canyon deserve economic opportunities, he said, they often do not profit from expansions at the Grand Canyon.

“People just assume it’s a protected landscape, and I believe it requires each generation to step up and voice how they feel about it,” McBride said.

100 years of exploration Humans have lived in and around the Grand Canyon for thousands of years, but efforts to reserve it for the public are relatively recent.

a national monument and then a national park in 1919,” said Paul Sutter, environmental history professor and the author of Driven Wild: How the Fight Against Automobiles Launched the Modern Wilderness Movement, which tackles the dilemma of national parks protecting the landscape while accommodating increased tourism.

Once Americans embraced the automobile, he said, the National Park Service was able to attract large numbers of tourists.

“There was a shift in tourism from 1901 to years after World War I when a large number of automobiles started arriving, and it really changed the nature and patterns of visitation,” Sutter said. “The infrastructure of the automobile travel began to catch up around World War I.” The National Park Service began a See America First campaign during World War I to entice people to drive out West, Sutter said.

“When most Americans thought about tourist travel, their first impulse was to go to Europe and go on a grand tour of all the famous sites,” Sutter said. “When that possibility got shut down around World War I, the See America First campaign was to increase tourism but also to create American identity through spectacular landmarks.”

Places like the Grand Canyon are what make the U.S. stand out, he said.

“Europe may have these ancient ruins and all this history, but we have these

monuments to nature, and that’s what made America a distinctive place.”

As a historian, Sutter knows every national park struggles to protect natural resources and manage visitation.

The Grand Canyon had nearly 38,000 visitors during its first year as a national park in 1919.

Today, the park welcomes more than 6 million annually.

“I personally wish we could figure out a way as a society that could better socialize the costs across the entirety of the population rather than raising the prices so much that you begin to put the experience out of reach for some people,” Sutter said. “I also know this is where they get their money and parks are in desperate need of money.

The Grand Canyon is the second most visited national park after Great Smoky Mountains National Park, according to the National Park Service, and it’s suffering from wear and tear.

The park has a maintenance backlog of over $300 million.

Preserving the park Roosevelt declared the area a national monument in 1908, but several bills to have it declared a national park failed to pass Congress.

“In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world,” Roosevelt said. “I

Did you survive Arizona’s hail, sleet and snow storm? I hope so, because it was quite a doozy.

You didn’t even have to live in the high country to see snow, since areas in the Valley were hit pretty hard. Something surreal about seeing saguaros covered in snow.

Of course, nothing like Flagstaff getting 39-inches in one day and Prescott was under siege.

The Navajo claim that rain clouds look like sheep in the sky and that a raindrop or snowflake is the single blessing that assures life. They pray for rain and snow as it soothes the spirit.

Well it soothes more than the spirit, because maternity nurses predict that we’ll see a “bumper crop” of babies being born nine months from now. Couples seem to get “cozy” during a rainy or snowy weekend.

It has also been reported

that more births occur during “bad weather.” Hey, even livestock seem to deliver their babies in record numbers during blizzards.

And what about culinary skills? One man emailed me and asked me if I knew of any research that concludes that women like to cook only in inclement weather. He says after 40 years of marriage, when it’s cold and stormy is when his wife makes delicious meals.

Sunny Arizona might not be his best choice of places to live.

Prescott and surrounding areas saw a blizzard of epic proportions. Streets, parking lots and driveways couldn’t be cleared of the snow, causing people to either stay home or try to dig out.

Vehicles were left at the end of long drives, folks called 9-11 because they couldn’t open their front doors from the snow pack. Tree branches snapped off heavy with snow and cars slid into each other or landed in ditches. Tow truck and snow plow drivers became our heroes.

The cold weather formed sheets of ice, causing my husband to fall and break his ankle. A neighbor’s cat was found frozen under a tree, a baby calf froze in the pasture and all manner of tragedy and havoc came in with the storm.

Freeways shut down, weddings were cancelled, emergency rooms were filled with folks who had fallen, schools and businesses closed, stores ran low on food, shovels, batteries and snow-blowers.

In the northern corridors of Scottsdale and Phoenix, rain, hail, sleet and snow pounded the desert, with some places in Carefree getting six inches of snow or more.

Car accidents, rollovers, falls, crashes, lost animals, slippery walkways and frigid temperatures caused a crazy few cold days in the Valley of the Sun. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. We were warned of the storm, but still it packed a wallop that we simply aren’t used to experiencing.

While Phoenix has returned to sunny, warm days, the high country is still dealing with the snow drifts, ice and now the mud.

Yet, we don’t complain.

Arizona needs the moisture and in the high country, snow pack is what fills our reservoirs.

Now, it’s time to thaw out and enjoy the sunshine. And be thankful it wasn’t worse.

Let’s say you go for your annual physical and your doctor recommends that you get a hearing and balance test. Or an electrocardiogram (EKG). Or a Hepatitis B screening.

Does your Original Medicare cover these services? Now there’s a quick way to find out, using your smartphone or tablet.

It’s Medicare’s new “What’s Covered” app and it’s free. You can use the app right there in the doctor’s office, hospital, or anywhere else you use your phone or tablet.

The app displays general cost, coverage and eligibility details for medical items and services covered by Medicare Part A and Part B. You can search or browse to learn what’s covered and not covered; how and when to get covered benefits; and basic cost information.

You can also get a list of Medicare-covered preventive health services, like flu shots and cancer and diabetes screenings.

“What’s Covered” is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Search for “What’s covered” or “Medicare” and download the app to your phone. Once “What’s Covered” is installed, you can use it to get reliable Medicare information even when you don’t have access to your computer.

“What’s Covered” is Medicare’s first app. It was created to meet the needs of the growing population of people with Medicare. That population is projected to increase from nearly 56 million beneficiaries in 2016 to more than 80 million beneficiaries in 2030 – almost 50 percent.

About two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries use the Internet daily or almost daily, and questions about what Medicare

covers are some of the most frequent inquiries that my agency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, receives.

There are about 15 million page views annually for coveragerelated content on Medicare.gov and 1-800 MEDICARE receives more than 3 million coveragerelated calls each year.

Easy access to accurate, reliable Medicare coverage information is just one new feature of the eMedicare initiative, launched in 2018 to empower beneficiaries with cost and quality information. Other tools in the eMedicare suite include: • Enhanced interactive online decision support to help people better understand and evaluate their Medicare coverage options and costs between Medicare and Medicare Advantage (https:// www.medicare.gov/ medicarecoverageoptions/).

RODEO SCOTTSDALE continued from page 1

Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Last year, it drew 75 professional bull riders, which is about double what typical competing events see.

For all events combined, there will be about 700 contestants which will draw quite a crowd. The rodeo has even added an extra day on Thursday, March 7, just for bull riding to accommodate all the contestants.

Thousands of fans flock to Scottsdale each year to watch these cowboys from all over the country compete in a variety of rodeo events, including Bull Riding, Bronc’ Riding, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing.

Rodeo Scottsdale will take you back in time to traditional rodeos, according to Rodeo General Manager Dave Alford.

“We keep it old school.

The event you see today is nearly identical to what it was like in the 1950s. The only differences are the contestants and the location,” Alford said.

“These Cowboys will keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time.”

The first event was actually held at the site where Scottsdale Fashion Square sits now. In past years it has also been held at the Rawhide in North Scottsdale, which has since moved to Chandler, and at a facility that was once located across the parking lot from Scottsdale Stadium.

The West World venue has been the home to Rodeo Scottsdale since 2000, which was renovated by the City of Scottsdale in 2015, making it one of the premier equestrian venues in the western United States.

The event runs for four days, with music performances and dancing held on site at West World for the first three nights.

Painting the world around you

Founder of Woman Who Grow, Jewel Diamond Taylor, writes, “Your thoughts, words, and deeds are painting the world around you.”

A concept local artist Marless Fellows knows all too well.

Her creative passion continues to run along the deep roots of Western contemporary/ southwest painter.

Many of her first subjects were the Salt River wild horses and over the years Marless has grown her commitment into a connection to with the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group. She donates a portion of her sales to help with health, welfare and management efforts of the herd.

Growing up primarily in Arizona, her father was in the Navy, which required the family to move a number of times when she was a child.

But there was something about the shadows of the mesas, brilliant sunsets and serenity of the desert’s flora and fauna that called Marless back to Arizona.

She credits her father for being

the first person to influence her in art in her childhood.

“He would draw little cartoon elephants and other figures for my sisters and me, so I picked it up for fun,” she said.

She didn’t think of perusing an art career until her 30s when her husband’s grandfather came to stay with them.

“He was an amateur artist and enjoyed ‘creating’ as a hobby. He encouraged me to expand my drawing into painting, and the rest is history, as they say,” Marless recollected.

Marless enrolled in drawing classes at Mesa Community College (MCC) to develop a foundation in art.

She acquired an interest in life drawing and six semesters later her human anatomy expertise formed a firm background for her exquisitely detailed human portraits based in Western “cowboy” culture.

Following MCC, Marless attended Scottsdale Artist School where she continued her education in drawing and painting with master artists from all over the United States.

“I began at the beginning and followed

through until I completed the most advanced courses,” she said.

Adding to her expanding experience and education Marless loves visiting museums and galleries where she picks up composition, painting styles and ideas from both past and present artists.

She continues to attend workshops and master classes where she constantly updates her techniques resulting in an evolving body of quality work for her growing client base.

The search for Western wildlife for her meticulously rendered portraits is one of her great joys.

She and her husband, a native of Montana, spend many of their summers traveling Yellowstone National Park, the Tetons and other wildlife preservation areas in search of moose, bear, buffalo,

elk or any other wildlife, capturing their images for future painting subjects.

Marless is a member of the Sonoran Arts League and her work is now on display at The Gallery at El Pedregal, on the second floor, located 34505 N. Scottsdale Road (sonoranartsleague.org).

She is also celebrating her ninth year participating in the AZ Fine Art Expo, which is happening now through March 24, in north Scottsdale (arizonafineartexpo.com).

CAVE CREEK – The Arizona Archaeology SocietyDesert Foothills Chapter (AASDFC) will be holding its March meeting with Dr. Jamie Awe about recent discoveries at Xunantunich in Belize on the evening of March 13, and it is free to attend.

Doctor Awe presents, “Sleuthing the Past: Unravelling the Political Implications and Significance of Recent Discoveries at Xunantunich through the Application of Cutting Edge Scientific Methodologies and Good Old-Fashion Archaeological Investigations.”

In 2016, the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project made several significant discoveries at the site of Xunantunich.

Besides caches of eccentric flints and a large royal tomb with sumptuous grave goods, the new finds included two hieroglyphic panels that implicate four Classic

period Maya kingdoms; among them that of the legendary Snake-head kings.

In this presentation, Dr. Awe demonstrates how the combination of cutting-edge scientific approaches along with good old-fashioned archaeological investigations can significantly influence the accuracy of our interpretations, as well as our efforts to unravel past cultural events.

The discoveries also serve to demonstrate that despite being the focus of explorations for more than a century, the site of Xunantunich continues to provide us with intriguing new information on the significant roles played by Belize Valley as the focal point of the sociopolitical landscape in the Late Classic Maya lowlands.

Docotor Awe is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Northern Arizona University (NAU), Director of the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project, and Emeritus member of the Belize

Institute of Archaeology.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Anthropology at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London.

After receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Awe taught in the anthropology departments of Trent University, then at the Universities of New Hampshire, Galen, and Montana.

Between 2003 to 2014, he served as the first Director of the Belize Institute of Archaeology where he was responsible for managing the archaeological heritage of the country. He subsequently joined the faculty at NAU in 2014.

During his extensive career in archaeology, Dr. Awe has conducted important research and conservation at most of the major archaeological sites in Belize. He has published numerous articles in various books, journals, and magazines.

His research has been featured in several national

and international television documentaries. For many years, Dr. Awe also led the Government of Belize’s archaeology outreach and education programs, writing books such as “101 Questions and Answers about the Ancient Maya of Belize and Maya Cities and Sacred Caves: A Guide to the Maya Sites of Belize.”

His other publications cover topics that span from the Preceramic period to the time of European contact. Dr. Awe continues his active program of research in Belize, conducting

multi-disciplinary investigations with his colleagues and graduate students at the major Maya cities of Cahal Pech, Baking Pot, Xunantunich and Lower Dover.

The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the community room (Maitland Hall) at The Good Shepard of the Hills Episcopal Church, 6502 East Cave Creek Road, in downtown Cave Creek (near the Dairy Queen).

Roosevelt, however, was out of office by the time Congress approved the Grand Canyon National Park Act. It was signed Feb. 26, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson.

As the canyon celebrates its 100th anniversary, 2019 will be a year to honor the national park through a push for sustainability, according to centennial coordinator Vanessa Ceja.

“This is a place that’s going to stay here for thousands of years and we want it to stay for future generations,” Ceja said.

Over the next two years, the park will make the switch to zero landfill. Over the past five years, the National Park Service has put solar panels on staff housing and enforced singlestream recycling, Ceja said.

“We have one dumpster where all of our trash gets taken to so that’s increased the amount of recycling we’ve done in the park,” Ceja said. “By having less dumpsters, we’re reducing carbon emissions from trucks.”

to encourage sustainable efforts, she said, but there are changes visitors can make to help preserve the canyon.

Visitors should take all their trash with them when they leave; leave all rocks and fossils; not vandalize the canyon; stay a safe distance from wildlife; and if you need to use the restroom in the inner canyon, dispose of your waste properly.

“Even though you are just a visitor, your actions here in the park have an impact,” Ceja said.

“You don’t have to be a park staff to be a steward.”

Like any national park, anyone who visits has a responsibility to preserve the parks for generations to come.

“They are just places you really hope everyone can get to at one point,” Sutter said.

For Smith and Kenison, they know that a place so grand deserves multiple visits. They are continuing their quest to complete 100 adventures in and around Grand Canyon this year.

Smith and Kenison just completed over 80 tasks and their final, culminating experience will be rafting the Colorado River in June.

The driver of the Corolla was a 71-year-old woman, and her name has not been released at this time, but police say they do not believe speed was a factor.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Then a few hours later and little farther north another motorcycle and vehicle collided near 7th Street and the Carefree Highway at approximately 8:15 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries and was in critical condition at the time this was written, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office (MCSO).

“It appears the vehicle turned in front of the motorcycle causing a collision,” MCSO Sergeant Bryant Vanegas said.

Education Night is on March 12, for the Peoria Unified School District to fundraise for the Peoria Education Foundation.

Kids Day is on March 20 and 23, where children ages eight to 12 can participate in special experiences on a first-come, firstserved basis. Families can visit guest services up to one hour before the first pitch on game day to register for an activity.

Traffic reminder: Pinnacle Peak Road is closed east of Interstate 17 through mid-March PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wants to remind drivers that they should expect delays and allow extra travel time if commuting in the area near Interstate 17 and Pinnacle Peak Road.

Pinnacle Peak Road just east of I-17 is closed in both directions while construction crews replace a large drainage culvert next to the highway.

The closure is scheduled to be in place continuously until the early morning hours of Thursday, March 14.

Work to remove the culvert is occurring 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so ADOT advises

drivers to plan ahead for heavy traffic and allow for plenty of extra travel time.

ADOT is maintaining access to I-17 and the frontage roads, however, many drivers in the area must use alternate routes until Pinnacle Peak Road reopens next month.

Businesses and schools located south of Pinnacle Peak Road between I-17 and 23rd Avenue are accessible from 19th Avenue.

ADOT advises drivers to watch for law enforcement officers directing and monitoring traffic at Pinnacle Peak Road and 23rd Avenue this week as drivers get accustomed to the temporary detour route.

Removal of the culvert is occurring in conjunction with the $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17 traffic interchanges at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads.

Local resident voices issues about NRDHCA expanding its board

The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by local resident David Thompson in response to an article in that appeared on the front page of The Foothills Focus in the February 13, 2019, issue. The article was titled “NRDHCA expanding board to facilitate its new Daisy Mountain Alliance,” and can be found at: TheFoothillsFocus.com NEW RIVER – I will only address two issues of many that primarily revolve around statements by Ed Taylor, the president of the New River Desert Hills Community Association (NRDHCA) regarding bylaws, convenience and the New River Desert Hills incorporation effort.

The problem is with Mr. Taylor's description of the recent appointment of a new director of the organization and expansion of the board as "convenient."

The article only included one example of NRDHCA violating their own bylaws, however there were several.

In section 4.1 of NRDHCA’s bylaws it is clearly stated that board shall consist of and odd number of 5 to 11 members and are to be elected at a meeting held for that purpose. "Called for that purpose" means that the meeting must be announced as a meeting that will include increasing the number of directors.

But, how does one get notice of the meeting?

The bylaws address meeting notification to members in Section 3.5, which they didn't follow at all. There is no provision for the “appointment” of a director by a board motion or vote in any situation except for the resignation of a director.

Hopefully a notification, or at least a chance at one happens in time to prepare for the meeting. This should imply an agenda, but meetings of the NRDHCA Board never have an agenda distributed in time to consider it.

Additionally, the minutes are not published for review. As stated in Section 4.1 of the NRDHCA’s bylaws, board members are elected by majority vote of members present. If you don't know there's an election or appointment, you can't plan to vote.

So, by surprise, NRDHCA overlooked their own bylaws and appointed a new director, and plan to do it again.

When one joins an association there is an implied contract that in return for membership fees the organization will pursue its stated purpose and follow the stated bylaws. Simply put, this did not happen.

Perhaps "convenient" means it would be inconvenient for NRDHCA to obey its own bylaws.

Now, addressing the second issue: the initial membership of the various committees.

For brevity, there was one new director and six new committee members from Desert Hills and New River announced; all but one of them are highly vocal opponents of the incorporation effort, and one has not stated an affiliation.

It appears to me, someone who actually looks at who and what is going on, that the organization NRDHCA is "packing the bleachers" with people firmly against the New River and Desert Hills efforts to incorporate.

Given the preferential appointments, what impression, other than a stand against incorporation, can be made?

These concerns have not been directly discussed with the NRDHCA because there is no provision in their bylaws for such a discussion. Objections have been made informally, but seemingly fell on deaf ears.

These two issues are not only a violation of the implied contract between the organization and its members, but also a betrayal of the trust that has been placed in the NRDHCA as a neutral community organization.

ANTHEM –Rambo is a playful, lab-mix puppy who enjoys the company of his humans and is great with children.

He was found wondering the streets in Anthem and Anthem Pets took him in. He has been with the same foster home since.
