YCSO Detention Center’s AZGFD: Too many tortoises! school gets its first graduate Dozens available for adoption now BY TARA ALATORRE
CAMP VERDE – Graduation time is here, and while most families will gather on football fields and inside stadiums to celebrate, one local incarcerated student celebrated earning his high school diploma at the Camp Verde Detention Center. Zachary McQuillen, 21, is the first ever graduate of the Yavapai County Sheriff ’s Office (YCSO) School District and High School. He completed his high school course studies while in custody and was presented with his certified diploma last week.
“Congratulations to Zachary as the first Detention Center High School graduate and for the wiliness to dedicate his custody time to achieving this goal,” YCSO stated in a press release on May 22. The YCSO’s Detention Center High School was established in 2016, and is managed through YCSO’s School District with oversite from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and the Yavapai County Education Service Agency.
PHOENIX — In a battle against a moving vehicle, a Sonoran desert tortoise is most certain to lose every time. While “Charlie,” a 20-plusyear-old tortoise, escaped with its life in this instance — albeit with a damaged shell that has now healed — it’s now well enough to be adopted into a forever home. As is “Hook,” another tortoise that needed surgery to amputate its right foot after being attacked by a dog. Today

A dragon takes up residence at the Spanish Village in Carefree BY TARA ALATORRE
A dragon sand sculpture by Ray Villafane is starting to take shape at the Spanish Village in Carefee.
CAREFREE – About one week ago world-renowned sculptor and local resident Ray Villafane quietly started working on a new, large dragon sand sculpture in downtown Carefree. The sand dragon is perched, napping on the wall of the historic Spanish Village plaza near the patio of Black Mountain Coffee Shop and steps away from his art studio, Villafane Studios. Depending on the weather, it is expected to be completed in about two weeks. “I am hoping Mother Nature will be gentle so I can keep it up until the pumpkin festival,” Villafane said. The sculpture is being made with approximately 30-tons of

sand from the Salt River that has been compressed with water. The compression process took almost two weeks to complete before the shaping and sculpting could begin. Anyone familiar with Carefree’s annual Enchanted Pumpkin Garden, which is created by Villafane Studios, will recognize this master sculptor’s whimsical style and his amazing realistic details that bring all his characters to life. This dragon is no exception, and even uncompleted it looks stunningly realistic. The textures mimicking a reptile, and its friendly facial expression almost makes you want to squish its

CAREFREE – On May 27, the Cactus Shadows High School Chapter of the Veteran’s Heritage Project (VHP) paid tribute to local veterans on Memorial Day with a special ceremony honoring those interred at the Cave Creek Cemetery. Frank Lambert was the keynote guest speaker at the ceremony, he is a graduate of West Point Academy, a Vietnam Veteran and a two-time Purple Heart recipient. Two students from the local VHP recently recorded Lambert’s stories of war and they both spoke about how their time with him has shaped their lives forever. Also, local resident, Margo Angeli, whose brother Gus, a Navy Veteran and former VHP advisor that is interred in the cemetery, spoke about the importance of Memorial Day. A posting of colors was presented by Boy Scout Troop 15. As well as a cappella
rendition of the National Anthem and a special rendition of TAPS was performed to conclude the program. About Veterans Heritage Project Founded in 2004 and established as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization in 2009, Veteran Heritage Project’s™ (VHP) mission is to Connect Students with Veterans™ in Order to Honor Veterans, Preserve America’s Heritage and
Develop Future Leaders. Through VHP’s oral history publishing program, students capture and document veterans’ stories and images, which are permanently preserved in the Library of Congress and through the student publication Since You Asked™. VHP student authors are the largest contributors to the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, having preserved over 2,000 veteran stories.

both are among the multiple tortoises seeking to provide slow doses of companionship to their caregivers and an opportunity to lovingly tend to the backyard of their adoptive homes. “Tortoises are amazingly resilient animals,” said Tegan Wolf, Arizona Game and Fish Department's (AZGFD) Tortoise Adoption Program coordinator. “While the Arizona Game and Fish Department strives to keep wildlife wild, captive desert tortoises cannot be released into the wild because they may spread diseases to wild populations," she said. "Because of this, we place dozens of adoptable tortoises into homes to live out their lives as lovable loyal companions.” Desert tortoises offer a unique alternative to more traditional family pets and can teach many of the same life lessons to children, including responsibility, compassion and commitment. Contrary to many assumptions, desert tortoises can be interactive and provide companionship without as many demands as a cat or dog. While Charlie and Hook are between 20 and 40 years

old, dozens of other desert tortoises eligible for adoption vary in age and size. Arizona residents interested in providing an adoptive home to a desert tortoise can find an adoption application and packet with general information on AZGFD's website. Those applying to adopt a tortoise will be contacted by the department once their application is reviewed and approved. Adopters need to have a securely enclosed yard or separate enclosure in their yard, free from potential hazards such as a dog, fire pit or unfenced pool. The enclosed area must include an appropriate shelter for the tortoise to escape Arizona’s extreme summer and winter temperatures. All of the desert tortoises eligible for adoption are given health exams before going to their new homes. For more information on how to adopt a tortoise or to fill out the application visit, https://bit. ly/28UwSZI.

There was a death in the family. Those cruel words have been spoken and experienced by all of us. A parent, spouse, child, sibling, aunt, uncle or grandparent departs from our life and we are catapulted into a different space. The grieving zone. That place that no one cares to be and yet somehow no one can completely escape. Memorial Day sometimes is the poignant reminder that we are honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. It is a solemn day of remembrance. Sometimes we confuse it with the joy of a three-day weekend or a family barbeque. There are Memorial Day sales and plenty of events to attend. Still, it is the day that marks a deep sadness for so many families across our great country.
Losing a young person is especially heart-breaking. For many families Memorial Day is the time to go to the cemetery, bring a lawn chair or blanket and sit for a while on the grave of an American hero and contemplate “what could have been.” This is the sorrow when a soldier dies, the loss of all the life celebrations and landmarks that were to come are gone now. The wedding, children, college, career… all the dreams that didn’t get a chance to be lived are intricately woven into the loss. My daughter’s stepson, Christopher, was killed in a motorcycle accident last weekend. He was in his 20s, a free spirit, artist and world traveler. Going down the windy road from Jerome, a car made a U-turn in front of him. Even being careful and wearing a helmet doesn’t mean that a tragedy can’t occur. It makes us ask “why God” and come up with no answer. Death is the final act that cannot be imagined in someone so young and so promising. My high school friend, Ted, was killed in Vietnam. He was just two weeks from coming home. His mother sat for three months on a lawn chair at the
foot of his grave. She read books and talked to him. She cried every day until, as she said, “I had no more tears.” There was something alarming, and yet courageous about her daily ritual. Her family was bereft. Her minister came to talk with her. A doctor was sent. Yet, after 90 days she emerged. Sad but stronger. Grieving but accepting. Ready to take small steps towards living. When Memorial Day became a federal holiday back in 1971, it had actually been celebrated as Decoration Day since the years following the Civil War. It is the unofficial “beginning of summer.” And being from Ohio, most folks back east used Memorial Day as the green light to start wearing white slacks, shoes and purses. It was a very important window of opportunity to dress in white. Because by Labor Day, that was considered a no-no. How did your Memorial Weekend go? A flag? Maybe a visit to a cemetery? A prayer for those lost? White shoes? I will remember. Those who served. Those we lost. My friend Ted. The grieving families. And sweet Christopher. A time to honor and grieve. Desert Hills Presbyterian Church now offering more contemporary worship service with 'The Gathering'

leadership continues to enhance the weekly worship. “One thing that stands out to me about DHPC is the vision. I love it, how biblical and counter-cultural it is. It is clear that DHPC is about living out the word of God in every way possible,” said Moomey. Mikey leads worship each Sunday morning at The Gathering with a team of musicians. “Also, there is so much activity and ministry going on in so many areas. The heart to reach and to love everyone where they’re at is evident!” he said. The church also offers traditional worship services in its Sanctuary Building with the Chancel Choir, occasional Hand
Bell Choir, and special music led by the DHPC Traditional Music Director, Jeffrey Anthony. Pastor Jim Noble provides a biblical and memorable sermon to teach the Word of God, challenge thinking and apply principles to daily life, resulting in a transformed life. If desired, childcare is provided by trained, screened and loving folks for kids aged nursery through third grade (not available at 8:15 a.m. worship). Older children are welcome to stay during the worship services. Students fourth grade and older are also invited to join DHPC on Sunday afternoons for its Adventures Youth Group from 4-5:30 p.m. The church focuses on four areas, love the Lord, keep God’s
Word, love one another and be a blessing. These areas lead DHPC to its mission statement: More people, more like Christ. They welcome all ages to join them at the foot of The Boulders, 34605 N. Tom Darlington Road in Scottsdale. Worship times during the months of June through September are 9 a.m. for Traditional Worship and 10:30 a.m. for The Gathering. October through May the worship times are 8:15 and 9:45 a.m. for Traditional Worship and 11:10 a.m. for The Gathering. For more information, please visit deserthills.org or find them on Facebook. The phone number is 480-488-3384.

ANTHEM – In a 30-day campaign, donors contributed $30,600 to ProMusica Arizona (PMAZ), exceeding the organization’s goal to raise $25,000 during its annual spring fundraiser. The success of the campaign was largely due to individual musicians and staff members who contacted their friends and family and asked for support.
“As a non-profit organization, we depend on generous individuals who understand the importance of music in our lives! We could not survive and fulfill our mission without our donors, and we are extremely grateful for the success of this campaign,” said PMAZ Executive Director Yvonne Dolby. Priorities for the coming PMAZ season include:
Continuing to offer affordable ticket prices to adults and free concert tickets to children; acquiring new and challenging music to enhance the concert experience for musicians and audience; increasing the marketing effort to take advantage of unused seating capacity at existing venues; and ensuring sound consistency at all venues through equipment improvements and technical expertise. To wrap up the current season, a group of PMAZ singers are leaving on June 17, for a week-long singing tour of Ireland. Their concert titled “Americana,” will feature American music for their Irish audiences. Before departing for the Emerald Isle, they will present “Americana” for a hometown audience on June 2, at 4 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church located at 15649 N. 7th Street in Phoenix. The performance is free to the public. Plans for next season are underway with rehearsals
beginning in August. PMAZ will continue to present innovative, high-quality, family-friendly concerts in the 2019-20 season.
The upcoming 2019/2020 season will be announced soon on the organization’s website at www.PMAZ.org.

movie review BY MONTE YAZZIE FILM CRITIC
Practice makes perfect. There are musicians who practice the most difficult musical compositions for their entire careers, all with the hope of achieving the perfect manipulation of notes. The amount of perseverance, motivation and ambition needed to accomplish this feat of perfection is a mindset that many can’t and won’t achieve. Director Richard Shepard crafts a genre-bending tale of perfectionism, jealousy and deep trauma with the movie “The Perfection.” Assisted by a wonderful performance from Allison Williams, this bizarre, engaging, yet flawed horror/thriller/ science fiction mashup is consistently operating at
maximum capacity. Even when there are moments that it should make room for something other than gratuitous spectacle. Charlotte (Allison Williams) is a former musical prodigy who had to leave a house for musicians, run by an eccentric and wealthy husband and wife (Steven Weber and Alaina Huffman), when her mother became ill. Charlotte, now older and no longer a revered musician, seeks out the new prodigy, Lizzie (Logan Browning). She is now the star pupil of Charlotte’s old school. The two women are drawn to each other, and eventually take a journey together that begins to lead to sinister outcomes. The mystery presented by “The Perfection” is a major piece of the fun. The

design of the narrative utilizes more than a few fun devices that keep the viewer guessing about what is going on and where the film is going. Specifically, the editing style and the manipulative nature of the character development are key elements to the story. There is a Brian De Palmaesque quality to the structure of the film, with manipulation of time and detailed story perspectives. However, this film doesn’t have the director’s distinctive style or sense of subtlety within the frame. The film isn’t too interested in balancing the different elements of tension and suspense. Instead, this film completely swings for the cinematic fence every time it steps to the plate. And, on a few occasions, the approach towards instituting a twist in the story feels so forcefully implied that it ultimately takes away from the dark and twisted fantasy horror story being told. Still, it’s refreshing to see the chances that this film is willing to take, especially in its push towards being its own unique and unexpected vision. One of the strongest links within “The Perfection” is the fascinating performance from Williams, who is building a strong horror credential with this film and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.” Ms. Williams has a way of being devious and delicate at the same time, while being the manipulator and the
THE PERFECTION Director: Richard Shepard Starring: Allison Williams, Logan Browning, Alaina Huffman, and Steven Weber Monte’s Rating 3.50 out of 5.00 manipulated; her smile has a quality that is both naïve and sinister. Watching her build her character amidst the twists and turns is amusing throughout the entirety of the film. Elements pile one after another, building upon each other all leading towards a finale that seems impossible to conclude after all the genre manipulations throughout the film. This makes it difficult to conclude this film, especially when the spectacle of everything is being pushed towards extraneous limits.
Unfortunately, the addition of a specific story device doesn’t help the film find its place in the end. “The Perfection” is a nicely composed, sometimes bizarre and fascinating genre mashup. With a great performance from Williams, it’s a pleasant surprise to see a film play with genre in such interesting ways, even when it doesn’t always work out like it should. Still, for those willing to take the strange journey being offered here, “The Perfection” is looking to stimulate all your horror senses.

Truth can be stranger than fiction
BY SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST
“Truth is stranger than fiction, it’s because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn’t,” Mark Twain. This is certainly the case with local author, Richard Ira Carroll, when it comes to both of his page-turning novels. Both novels are based on historical discoveries, references and interviews, all compelling you to join the journey of discovery. In brief, Dr. Mathew Lane, Ann Tyler and Jim Morgan, the three archaeologists who discovered Noah’s Ark on Mount Ararat, in Richard’s first novel “The Lost Photographs,” are off in search for the real Ark of the Covenant in his second work, “Burned In Stone.” Richard was born on the family farm 16 miles north of Greely, Colo., in 1936. His mother passed away when she was 24-years-old, leaving her two children, Jackie age 5, and Richard age 3, in the care of their father. Unable to raise two small children and manage the farm
and cattle ranch on his own, Richard’s dad enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and left the children in the care of their maternal grandparents in Fort Collins, Colo. After the war, his dad remarried and took Richard and Jackie back to the ranch to live with their expanded family, which now included a stepmom and her four children. When Richard was 15 his dad sold all his property in Colorado and moved the family to Springville, Utah, about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. There his dad purchased a small motel to support the family. Richard’s dad was not big on years of education, so with his encouragement Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy just after his seventeenth birthday and shipped off to basic training in San Diego, Calif. Richard was then assigned to class “A” radar school at Treasure Island near San Francisco. He was now prepared for his new post as a radar man aboard aircraft carrier, the USS Boxer, stationed off Japan in the Pacific
Ocean. During this threeyear period Richard passed the GED program and achieved a pay grade of E-5 before being honorably discharged in October 1957. Shortly before being discharged from the Navy, Richard married. The couple would start their new life in Mesa once his service was completed. Upon arriving in Mesa Richard was able to find work for a few months in the meat department of a local grocery store, before hearing about a four-year apprenticeship program in the sheet metal industry. Richard applied and was accepted to the program graduating with honors, which set him off on a 40-year career in the commercial air conditioning business. He spent two years working in Saudi Arabia as a sheet metal installation supervisor and later he would become the owner of his own business called American Mechanical Inc. in Glendale, Ariz.
He and his second wife, Yvonne, retired in 1998. In 2010, Richard mentioned to Yvonne he had recorded a program he watched some years before about people who claimed to have seen Noah’s Ark on Mount Ararat. Apparently, in warm years the ice cap on Mount Ararat melts back enough to expose part of an old wooden Ark. Richard was particularly interested in the discovery that took place in 1916, when a Russian pilot flying over Mount Ararat spotted a wooden vessel partially protruding from the glacial ice. He reported his find to Czar Nicholas of Russia who sent a team of soldiers to investigate. The material collected and recorded from the expedition was turned over to the Czar. Unfortunately, this was shortly before the Czar and his family was assassinated in 1917. Richard told Yvonne, “Someone should write a book about these lost photographs and records.” Yvonne’s response, "Well, why don’t you?”.
And the rest of the story is found in the pages of “The Lost Photographs.” Richard went on to write a sequel called “Burned in Stone,” while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico. Both novels were awarded 4 of 5 stars by Literary Titan in July of 2018, (literarytitan.com). Richard reflects to his childhood and credits his grandmother for introducing him to the bible stories he grew to love, in both the Old and New Testaments. As well as encouraging his inquisitive learning process and hard work ethic. But it’s Yvonne who was the determining factor in keeping Richard on track in his writing and finally getting both books published. For more information on Richard Ira Carroll, his novels, to contact him or to grab two “must read” novels visit richardiracarrol.com. people in the United States are living with. The day brings the global MS community together to share stories, raise awareness and campaign with and for everyone affected by multiple sclerosis. This year the 2019 campaign will be called “My Invisible MS” (#MyInvisibleMS) and the theme is visibility. In 2009, the MS International Federation (MSIF) and its members initiated the first World MS Day. It focuses on a different theme each year that brings awareness to one of the most common neurological disorders in the world. MSIF provides a toolkit of free resources online to help everyone to take part in World MS Day. Anyone can use these tools, or make their own, to create positive change in the lives of millions of people around the world. A study conducted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and published in the February 2019, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, shows more than twice as many people in the U.S. are living with multiple sclerosis than previously thought. The previous studies estimated the prevalence to be 400,000,
but this new study shows that number is closer to 1 million. "This study tells us many things, but one thing in particular -- twice as many people need a cure," said Cyndi Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The cause of MS is still unknown, and there is no cure. As the leading organization in the MS movement, the Nation MS Society recognized the need to have a more accurate estimate of the number of people in the country with MS. So, it committed the funds and began the study in 2014, which brought together some of the best experts in neurology, epidemiology and statistics. It was a complex and thorough process, using a special algorithm to search through data from a variety of sources including Medicare, Medicaid, the Veteran's Health Administration and private insurers. The study produced
three papers all of which were peer-reviewed and published in Neurology Magazine. "This was an innovative, big data project that used information from more than 125 million health records," said Nick LaRocca, Vice President of Healthcare Delivery and Policy Research for the Society, and a co-author of the study. "Our hope is that the methods we used in this study can be applied to estimate prevalence of other medical disorders." The National MS Society believes the results of this study will help it achieve the goal of a world free of MS. The Arizona Chapter President of the National MS Society, Karen LaPolice Cummins, says that this year’s World MS Day is more important than ever based on the findings in its recent study. “Twice as many people need a cure than previously estimated, and the first step toward finding a cure for MS is raising awareness,” Cummins said. “In Phoenix, we host events all throughout the year to bring Arizonans together to call attention to the cause.” For more information on the MS Prevalence Study: nationalmssociety.org/prevalence.

Fun textures, playing with shapes, it’s kind of magical!” Magic is definitely Villafane’s specialty. Every sculpture he makes, whether made from pumpkins or compressed sand, it is given a name and a backstory with vignette developed, captivating audiences with an enchanting story they won’t soon forget. His last sand sculpture featured the “Tortellini Brothers” in March 2017, with “Shell-less Sheldon.” In May 2016, crowds flocked to his sculpture “Chessie Trunkston” the elephant

All were a part of his contract with the Town of Carefree to create public art displays at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavillion to attract visitors to the downtown area. Although the dragon sculpture is being created for the Spanish Village and is not a part of Villafane’s public art exhibits for Carefree, it will still be on public display, drawing crowds from around the Valley and beyond. “I am working out the name and details of this story still,” he said. “Mice are a
pretty big part of our narrative, and my personal work, so people can probably expect to see some of that.” Recently, Villafane added frayed palm tree fibers to his work in progress for some “long and luscious dragon lashes.” Visitors can see Villafane sculpting the sand sculpture over the next couple weeks at Spanish Village, 7211 E. “The school employs a full-time instructional specialist Mary Bordes, who is the general education teacher and teaches inmates high school courses, YCSO spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn said. “Although education opportunities were available prior to that date. It is managed by a school board of directors comprised of YCSO Sheriff Scott Mascher, YCSO Chief Deputy David Rhodes and YCSO Detention Services Division Captain Jeff Newnum. YCSO Lieutenant Brian Silvernale is the superintendent and Kristi Hambrick is the principal. Despite many inmates taking advantage of the high school at the Camp Verde Detention Center, many of its students are released prior to completing their credits
to graduate, according to YCSO. “Even so all their work will transfer to outside programs, so the incentive remains to take advantage of this in-custody high school, YCSO stated. The high school also offers a Special Education instructor, Daria Weir and a psychologist Joe Donaldson for the development and implementation of individualized education plans also known as IEPs. Funding is provided through ADE and the Yavapai County Education Service Agency for the provision of special education services to qualifying inmates. Funding for general education services is provided by YCSO’s budget and cooperation with local libraries. For more information visit ycsoAZ.gov or call 928-771-3260.
