PHOENIX – In ancient Sparta, fallen warriors were carried home on their shields. On Wednesday, an American flag draped the casket of John McCain – sailor and senator, husband and father – as it was placed on the shield of his beloved Arizona. His widow and other family members, friends and Arizona leaders watched silently as members of the Arizona National Guard carried the casket into the Capitol rotunda, stopping on a mosaic of the Arizona state seal: a shield featuring the motto Ditat Deus (“God enriches” in Latin)

flanked by images honoring mining, ranching, farming, scenery and Roosevelt Dam – nods to the five Cs of the state McCain called home for nearly four decades. Family members were the first to pay their respects. Cindy McCain, the senator’s wife, touched his casket before laying her cheek against the flag. Their seven children walked through after her, some stoic, some emotional. McCain’s daughter Meghan, a TV personality who often posted photos of her father and updates about his health, sobbed as she touched AZ REMEMBERS MCCAIN continued on page 10

primary elections were on August 28, and while the governor and federal races grabbed most of the attention, local town elections were also held last week with candidates vying for mayor and town council seats. Both Carefree and Cave Creek hold elections for mayor and council members every two years. Typically the winners of the primary will be declared the official winners unless a runoff election is deemed necessary, which would occur during the general elections in November. Here are the results for the towns of Carefree and Cave Creek elections. The incumbent Cave Creek Mayor Ernie Bunch won his bid

second term as mayor-elect. The six winners of the Cave Creek Town Council seats are: Kathryn Royer, who received most of the ballots cast with 14 percent of the votes; Bob Morris, who received 13 percent of the ballots cast; Thomas McGuire, who received 12 percent of ballots cast; David Smith, Susan Clancy and Paul Diefenderfer all received 11 percent of the ballots cast. Cave Creek residents voted against Proposition 406, which asked residents to approve the town’s general plan that was adopted by the council this April, with 58 percent of voters 2018 PRIMARY ELECTION continued on page 17

WASHINGTON – A civil rights watchdog group that tracks elections said it was greatly concerned that 62 Maricopa County polling stations failed to open on time Tuesday, and “very disappointed” that county officials refused to extend voting hours to let people cast a ballot. Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes said the problems, which he blamed on understaffed technology contractors, were fixed and polling places were operational by 11:30 a.m. But by that time voters across MARICOPA VOTING ISSUES continued on page11
