PHOENIX — For some, a dog or cat will do just fine. But for others who are considering adopting something uniquely Arizona, say hello to your next family member: a captive Sonoran desert tortoise. “Many people don’t even consider opening up their homes to desert tortoises, but they make fantastic and personable pets,” said Tegan Wolf, Arizona Game and Fish Department Desert Tortoise Adoption Program coordinator. A mouse in the White House
BY JUDY BLUHM
PhoenixMomBlog.com
Facebook.com/TheFoothillsFocus
There is an itty- bitty mouse, Who is living in the White House! Who one day fell from the ceiling, Sending forty reporters squealing. To the Oval Office he scurried As the Secret Service hurried. But the quick little mouse ran up a drape Where everyone gasped as he made his escape. Yes, there has been a lot of news coming out of the White House this past week. Perhaps the one piece of bipartisan news which everyone agrees upon is that a mouse doesn’t belong in the White House. There is a little critter who has defied all odds and created quite a ruckus. Perhaps a blessed diversion from politics. It seems that in the Press Room, where reporters stay waiting for interviews or press conferences, a tiny mouse fell from the ceiling and landed on
a man’s lap. Startled, he jumped up and yelled, “Mouse!” That’s when all chaos erupted and dozens of reporters were running madly as though a bomb had been planted. Geez people, settle down! Of course, there is scientific evidence that shows most people do not like mice. We are afraid of them. A mouse in the house (any house) is cause for heartthumping anxiety and panic. People have been known to experience terror when faced with a mouse. They are rodents with sharp teeth and long skinny tails. They may hide and come out and bite you later. Yes, we want to scream when see a mouse! This little mouse was no different than any other. Except it was where it was not supposed to be – in this nation’s finest house. It should not be falling from a ceiling (which has caused me to look up in my house a few more times) and land on an unsuspecting reporter’s lap. Hard to imagine how anyone could take this kind of surprise calmly. Run for your life, is the most common-sense response. Yet, all things coming out of the White House can become convoluted. There were questions about this mouse. Was he a mole? A Republican? A rat?
A Democrat? Planted by some evil person looking to disrupt things? How exactly does a little mouse fall from the ceiling? Who aided him? Yikes, this is just a mouse! Nothing more. My own mouse story is that I saw one scampering down the hallway from my kitchen to the bedroom. I screamed. My husband, Doug, ran into the house to see who was murdering me. When I pointed to the nasty beast running, he started laughing. Doug, do not laugh! There is a mouse in the house! This is serious. That old saying, “out of sight, out of mind,” has no meaning if you have ever seen a mouse disappear into your master bedroom. It is downright creepy. Tear the place apart to find the rodent. Under the bed, in the bed, closet, under dressers, search like a maniac. Where do little mousies go? Truth is, we just don’t know. Stay calm. Deep breathe. Call the Secret Service! Or, set the trap. Wait. I hear a snap. All is well again. Judy Bluhm is a writer and a local relator. Have a story or a comment? You can email Judy at: judy@judybluhm.com.

How to become a long-term investor

It’s a fairly predictable pattern: When the stock market rises, more people invest, but after a large-scale drop, many of these same people head for the exits. But by staying out of the financial markets, and only putting their money in “safe” vehicles that offer few or no growth prospects, are they really helping themselves?

Due primarily to illegal breeding, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) has dozens of tortoises of varying ages and sizes available for adoption. “It’s rewarding to hear stories from those who have adopted a captive tortoise and made them part of the family because they’re a unique alternative to traditional family pets. They offer many of the same life lessons to children and can provide just as much companionship and personality as a dog or cat,” Wolf said. Arizona residents interested in providing an adoptive home can submit an online application (www.azgfd.gov/tortoise) and find an information packet on how to properly care for a tortoise, including instructions on how to build an enclosure/burrow.
Here’s the bottom line: If you’re going to make progress toward your long-term goals, you have to become a long-term investor. But how? To begin with, you need to understand that long-term investing involves accepting inevitable short-term price swings. You may not like seeing those sharp price drops, but it will help your outlook greatly if you can keep them in perspective. Studies have shown that the longer you hold your investments, the less impact market volatility can have on them. So, to reach that point where the market’s ups and downs have less of a cumulative impact on your holdings, consider the following actions: Only invest money you won’t need for a long time If you can tell yourself that the money you are investing
today is money you won’t really need for 20 or 30 years, you’ll be better prepared, psychologically, to get through the down periods of the financial markets. And as long as you aren’t overextending yourself financially in other parts of your life, you really shouldn’t need those investment dollars for a very long time. They should be earmarked for goals you hope to achieve far into the future, such as a comfortable retirement. Keep your focus on what is most important to you If you can visualize your longterm goals, you’ll find it easier to keep working toward them. For example, if you are hoping to travel extensively when you retire, keep thinking about what that might look like. You might even research the countries you plan to visit, even if these trips are far in the future. Ultimately, if you know where you’re going and you’re
Adopters must have a securely enclosed yard or construct a separate enclosure to protect the tortoise from potential hazards such as a fire pit, unfenced pool or dogs. The enclosed area must include an appropriate shelter for the tortoise to escape Arizona’s extreme summer heat and a place to brumate — a seasonal period of inactivity similar to hibernation — during winter. Those applying to adopt a tortoise will be contacted by AZGFD once their application is reviewed and approved. The department typically adopts one tortoise per household, but an additional tortoise of the same sex can be adopted if it is placed in a completely separate enclosure as they can be territorial. Federal law prohibits desert tortoises from being transported across state lines. While it is illegal to remove Sonoran desert tortoises from the wild, it’s also illegal to allow them to breed in captivity. Each year, AZGFD and its partners must spend valuable resources
and time to find homes for dozens of captive tortoises. “One female tortoise living to 80 years old can produce more than 800 babies in her lifetime,” Wolf said. “This is why it is crucial that we work together to ensure tortoises are not only placed in proper homes, but with responsible owners.” For more information about AZGFD’s Tortoise Adoption Program or to provide a donation to help the department cover costs for tortoise food, shelter and medical expenses, visit www.azgfd.gov/ tortoise. If you suspect someone is illegally breeding Sonoran desert tortoises, please contact the AZGFD Operation Game Thief hotline at 800-352-0700. Those submitting a tip can remain anonymous.
determined to get there, you’ll get past the bumps in the road. Don’t spend excessive time reviewing your investment statements A bad month or two can cause some noticeably negative numbers on your investment statements. But if you can discipline yourself to avoid spending too much time dwelling on these figures, you may feel less stress about investing – and you may even be less tempted to make short-term moves that could have unfortunate longterm results. However, if you do want to study your investment statements, don’t just stop at the most recent results. Instead, look for trends that might tell a different story. Has the number of shares you own in various investments increased significantly over time? And over the past five or 10 years, has your portfolio’s overall performance been positive?
By digging a little deeper into your statements, you might gain more confidence in the course you’re following. Short-term price drops are not pleasant to experience. However, you can help yourself become a better long-term investor by following the above suggestions, so put them to work soon – and stick with them. with fiery eyes, massive wings and glowing green supernatural powers. While this may sound like a perfect premise for a spooky Halloween movie, this introduction is the scariest moment of this otherwise overly tame fairytale, belonging to Disney’s sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” Angelina Jolie, returning as the re-envisioned villain who demonstrates more heart and sympathy than anger and vengeance. She brings a calm yet intimidating demeanor to the iconic villain of the animated “Sleeping Beauty.” Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) and her goddaughter Aurora (Elle Fanning) have been living a peaceful existence. Aurora is the ruler of an enchanted land, a forest-like domain where fairies fly with water droplets, and fields of glowing dandelions grow in majesty. Aurora becomes engaged to Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson), which disrupts the already complicated relationship with Maleficent. The ensuing nuptials bring about the hope of peace between the human and fairy world.

However, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) has other devious plans in mind for Maleficent and Aurora. Director Joachim Rønning, who last helmed 2017’s “Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” handles the difficult task of continuing the story, which seemingly didn’t need a sequel. Although the cause for story continuation here is assisted by three extremely talented actors, who are doing their absolute best to bring life to this tale. The role of Maleficent seems tailored for Angelina Jolie, her grin is especially utilized with numerous emotions fluctuating throughout. Unfortunately, much of the character development in this film is retreaded from the first film. There are a few moments where
Jolie is provided room to expand the character. Elle Fanning adds some much-needed character charm to the film with Aurora. The character becomes the vessel for peace between two worlds and the primary conflict of the film. Michelle Pfeiffer is a good choice to counter Jolie here, she plays evil with glee in almost every scene. Unfortunately, all these great actors are stuck in a film without a strong narrative standpoint. While the film is aiming to display themes of acceptance and embracing family in whatever form it may take, these components are often undercut by the need to adhere to the familiar fairytale, storybook steps. There are a few interesting moments involving the
evolution of Maleficent, which allows the character to find the emotional conflict to bridge towards the finale. And whenever Maleficent is allowed to be vulnerable, which doesn’t happen enough, the film finds its stride; displaying its core theme of accepting differences and dedication to family. “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” has a great cast who are stuck within a story that never allows them to grow into anything different from everything we already know them as. This doesn’t help the journey the sequel is trying to promote, but instead makes it seem one-note. It is unfortunate when you have such a unique character like Maleficent, played by a dedicated Angelina Jolie holding the frame.

Arts
Inspiration from everywhere BY SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST
"My passion is in transforming everyday objects into innovative glass designs through sensory observation, imagination and meticulous technique," says local glass artist Jacki Cohen. Jacki's love of color, vibrancy and bold design reverberate through her one-of-a-kind, eye popping, functional glass pieces. There is no mistaking a Jacki Cohen creation! Jacki's family moved to Phoenix in the 1970s when she was seven-years-old. She credits her father with her creativity. "He was naturally a visual artist, dabbling in different art projects in his free time," she said. She remembers, from a very young age, spending hours with her crayons, colored pencils and paints that were never in short supply. After high school graduation, Jacki moved to Tempe attending Arizona State University for a degree in marketing from the business school. She soon launched her career in Phoenix as a retail buyer for a large department store.
"At that time we bought regionally, my territory covered five states, 40 stores and I had responsibility for a multi-million dollar department," Jacki said. She thrived on the challenge and opportunity to travel, depending on her organizational skills to keep her at the top of her game. But once she married and started her family it was time to step off the fast track of the corporate world and settle down. Her family's choice was to stay in the Phoenix area, saying "I never a thought of leaving Arizona. I love the beauty of the desert, the weather and living a healthy outdoor lifestyle." The next phase of Jacki's career, while her children were growing up, was as a stay at home mom and volunteer. Yet that creative energy needed an outlet. Drawing on her lifelong love of visual arts and fashion, Jacki found new ways of expressing her creative talents, creating amazing theme-oriented parties for personal events and organizations. Her event planning skills and the ability to deliver quality on deadline
made Jacki’s talents a high commodity. It wasn't long before Jacki was able to turn her attention, and vast experience in business, toward building an art career in fused glass. She typically starts her day early, preferring to work in her studio from morning to mid-afternoon, leaving late afternoons to the business aspects of her art business. Jacki is an expert when it comes to successful business practices: planning, organization, responsiveness and mindful follow through...“she’s got this. Jacki’s art is inspired by life, nature, mountains and the ocean, early morning hikes with her music helps to spark new ideas for bold new collections. She adds, "I am also inspired by everyday objects; a restaurant menu, desert specimen or fashion item can inspire the next collection. I translate the world into glass." Currently Jacki is expanding on her "Synergy" collection by adding a black and white component. Her interpretation of synergy is seeing life as a balance that leans to the side of joy and happiness. It's in the small, often unnoticed details that make you smile. Jacki keeps an active exhibition schedule with numerous showings both in local galleries and online for international forums. This November she will be a participating in the 23rd annual Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour, you will find her at MJ Roop Studio, Studio #25. She also sends a monthly newsletter that lists her upcoming events, galleries and shows. For more information about local glass artist, Jacki Cohen, visit her website, JackiCohenGlassArtDesigns. com. You can also find her on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. You are sure to find a functional or decorative piece that will brighten up your home, office, or serve as a perfect gift. You can contact Arts Columnist Shea Stanfield on her email at: flowingquill@yahoo.com.

CAREFREE – The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 11, for Pizzicata Restoranti Pizzeria, which is located in the Historic Spanish Village. Owners Federico and Viola Venturini moved from Umbria, Italy to open Pizzicata. The restaurant is the first official "Pinsere," which is a traditional Roman take on pizza that has a crispy crust and is made from all natural, GMO-free products. The name Pinsa comes from the Latin word Pinsere, which means "stretch-spread out," and is an
old Roman recipe that pre-dates pizza, according to the owners. "Pinsa is far more digestible than pizza due to its different dough hydration," Pizzicata's website states. "The water used for the dough is always cold and the dough has less carbohydrates and fat. Wheat, soy and rice are the recipe main ingredients." The new restaurant also features pasta made in-house daily and authentic Itallian gelato. It also serves beer, wine and cocktails. Pizzicata is located at 7212 E. Ho Road in Carefree. BOGO camping promotion returns to Maricopa County Parks PHOENIX –Maricopa County’s Parks and Recreation Department has brought back the popular Buy One, Get One (BOGO) camping promotion. “The Board takes a lot of pride in our park system because it gives residents and visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, said Chairman Bill Gates, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 3. The BOGO promotion is valid for stays booked between October 1, and November 10, 2019, allowing park visitors who pay the camping fee for one night or more, to receive one night of equal or lesser value for free during that same stay. “The promotion is a great way to encourage county residents to visit the parks and enjoy nature. Plus, the nature-themed playgrounds found throughout the park system provide a safe and educational environment for kids to connect with nature, Chairman Gates said. To receive the free night, park visitors must contact the call center at 602-5062930 (ext. 1). Reservations booked online or before the August 29, launch of the promotion are not eligible. “While this promotion is not valid for reservations made online, I’d like to remind park visitors that they can still book their spring visit up to six months prior to arrival via our reservation system," Maricopa County Parks, and Recreation Director R.J. Cardin said. Cardin explained further: "The system allows visitors to take virtual tours of the campsites, view campsite specifications and reserve their favorite spots from their computers and mobile devices. " Participating parks in the BOGO promotion include:
•
Cave Creek Regional Park Located north of Phoenix, this park offers the illusion of being miles away from civilization. The campground has 55 individual developed campsites.
•
McDowell Mountain Regional Park Nestled in the lower Verde River basin, this park is a desert jewel in the northeast Valley. This park has 76 developed campsites that are perfect for RV or tent camping.
•
Usery Mountain Regional Park Located on the Valley’s east side, this park is located at the western end of the Goldfield Mountains, adjacent to the Tonto National Forest. The park offers 74 individual developed campsites, which can accommodate either an RV or tent camping.
•
White Tank Mountain Regional Park At nearly 30,000 acres, this is the largest regional park in Maricopa County. Most of the park is made up of the rugged and beautiful White Tank Mountains on the Valleys west side. The park offers 40 individual developed campsites for tent or RV camping. At approximately 120,000 acres, Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional park systems in the United States. The parks are located throughout the county and are all within a 45-minute drive from downtown Phoenix. Some restrictions do apply. To learn more about Maricopa County’s regional park system, visit: MaricopaCountyParks.net. Online reservations may be made at maricopacountyparks.org, or by calling 602-506-2930.

Pet of the week: Meet Bam Bam ANTHEM – Bam Bam is very much a mutt. We really are not sure what he is, except adorable. He is six to seven-years-old, and a big guy. He is a fun-loving dog that adores cuddling! If you’re looking for a watchdog, he is not it. Bam Bam is not a big barker and is super friendly gentle giant with adults. But we would not recommend a home with young children, cats or small dogs because when he gets excited he forgets how big he is. He was brought in a year ago from an abusive situation were his tail and leg were scabbed up and he was being starved. He was stuck in a crate. so crating is not recommended. He is up to date on shots, neutered and microchipped, and ready for his new home. The adoption Fee is $75. This guy has had a hard life and needs a loving forever owner. Please fill out a foster or adoption matchmaker form on anthem pets.org. under resources.

I would like to offer you a no-obligation mortgage checkup to evaluate your current real estate financing. I will work with you to help you make the best choice for your financial situation.
Let’s discuss the following needs and concerns • A rising payment due to ARM loan resetting
• Using home equity to fund an important purchase
• Consolidation your first and second mortgages to lower your overall payment
• Consolidating credit card and other high-interest revolving debt*
• Primary residence, vacation or investment property
• Eliminating private mortgage insurance (PMI)
Viewing your mortgage as a financial instrument that can help you save money and achieve other life goals is a smart move. It all begins with your mortgage checkup.
