Cave Creek Unified School District welcomes 14 international teachers, interns to its language immersion programs

The CCUSD Governing Board recently met 14 new international teachers and interns who are a part of the language immersion program. They will be teaching French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese languages.

CAVE CREEK - The Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) Governing Board members recently met 14 new international teachers and interns that will teach Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese to the district's preschool through 12th grade students. The recently arrived teachers introduced themselves at the board meeting, and shared where they were from and their reflections on American students. “My fourth graders at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School just amaze me every single day,” said Ms. Liffick, a teacher originally from China, who teaches math and science in Chinese as well as Chinese language arts in the immersion program. The three interns from France shared their initial experiences as they embarked on their one year stay at Desert Sun Academy, supporting the French immersion program and promoting French language and culture school wide. While international teachers come through different pathways that authorize working in the U.S., interns come through the Embassy of France and Spain.

"As leaders in world language programming, CCUSD knows that leaving 12th grade with a bilingual/biliterate skillset will open doors for its students regardless of whether they work locally or on the global stage," stated a press release from the school district. A recent study (leadwithlanguages.org/report) of 1,200 U.S. based employers confirmed this by noting that “56% of U.S. employers state that the need for bilingual

workers in their field will increase,” according to CCUSD. The district's director of world languages, Cristina Ladas, appreciates that “international teachers bring a little piece of their world to Cave Creek so that our students are better prepared for the future.” Please contact CCUSD Director of World Languages, Cristina Ladas, for more information by calling 480-575-2019 or by email at: cladas@ccusd93.net.

Around the Bluhmin’ Town

Alexa, please be quiet

BY JUDY BLUHM

PhoenixMomBlog.com

Facebook.com/TheFoothillsFocus

Alexa, are you spying on me? Evidently so, because the latest analysis of how our “devices” never turn off seems to allude to the fact that your private conversations are not so private. Well, is this price of convenience? How can you have a “smart house” without a little bit of intrusion from a robot? This is the world we have created. Oh yeah, my old age is showing, since I do recall the world in all its glory before internet, laptops, iPads and cell phones. How my generation was able to survive is quite shocking. I have stories I tell my grandkids. You know, how I know how to read a map, drove all the way cross country without GPS or a cellphone. We had no 9-1-1 back in the day. There was no such thing as “call waiting,” you just got a busy signal. We had no “caller

ID,” so we never knew who was on the other end of the line, we had to risk it and just say “hello.” Let’s not forget, many of us lived pre-texting. That’s when phones were for talking and if we were lucky, we might have fun on a “party-line.” Yes, the daunting experience of living in a low-tech past is simply a fading memory that has no place in the world of “smart” devices. (Although, we might be getting dumber). I drove 3,000 miles with a map, and my grandson needs GPS to guide him out of the parking lot of a McDonalds. But I digress. Getting back to technological progress, Alexa, you are a little bit too intrusive for my liking. I do not have an Alexa, but my daughter does. Visiting her at her home, we were talking about a trip to San Diego, when Alexa starts blurting out various hotels and the average temperatures. Then I ask, “Alexa, were you just spying on us?”. She answers, “I have no opinion of that.” Well, I do! You were not invited into the conversation. So basically, you were just eavesdropping. Even if you do not use the “wake” command, it seems our little voice-assistant embedded

in smart speakers sold by Amazon (Echo), is listening “most” of the time. According to Amazon, in a news report with ABC News and Forbes, Amazon's workers also listen into conversations to help make its artificial intelligence, which is making Alexa even smarter. Yes, there are “teams” around the world who review, transcribe, mark-up and then feedback the information into its software to improve Alexa’s grasp of language and voice commands. Amazon denies that this is done unless the “wake” command is initiated. So why does Alexa seem to chime in on conversations? Maybe because she knows answers (which appears to be the main mission of Alexa). Or she wants to help? When my grandson with autism was talking about job possibilities, Alexa spoke up and said, “There are many work options for people with autism.” When he said, “Alexa, how do you know I have autism?” the little chatty device replied, “I have no opinion of that.” Alexa, please be quiet. SEDONA — Working artists in the Verde Valley are opening their private home studios to visitors over the weekend from Oct. 25-27, for a free self-guided art studio tour, which will also be held during the culmination of fall leaves changing color. The art tour covers the beautiful communities of Verde Valley: Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Cornville and Sedona. This event, sponsored by the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition (SVAC), provides the perfect backdrop for a fall tour in Northern Arizona, and is free to the public. “This is an amazing opportunity to connect with Arizona artists and see a lot of their work at one time,” said Mike Upp, President of SVAC. “The wide range of styles and art forms is a testament to the thriving vitality of the arts community in the beautiful Verde Valley. The artists truly enjoy demonstrating their creative

processes as they share their workspaces and, more importantly, make a personal connection with visitors. Beyond seeing the artist work hands-on, visitors have the chance to buy one-of-a-kind and locally produced artwork directly from the artist. "The event showcases established and emerging talent, so it is an easy way for art enthusiasts to start an art collection,” Upp said. There will be over 45 artists showcasing glass, ceramics, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, painting, drawing, digital art, photography, fiber, weaving and mixed media. Throughout the weekend, demonstrations of several different art forms will be taking place at various studios. The demonstration schedule is available online so you can plan your tailored selfguided tour. Tour attendees will have the opportunity to enter a studiowide drawing for a $250 gift certificate to be used at a studio

of their choice. To participate in the drawing, attendees must simply complete a form at any studio on the tour. The Tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. October 25 and 26, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 27. Brochures with a complete list of participating artists, including a map, will be available at numerous locations around the Verde Valley, including hotels, restaurants, the Sedona Arts Center and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Uptown Sedona. The SVAC is a non-profit educational and charitable organization. This inclusive organization welcomes artists at all levels and encourages creativity, community, and camaraderie For complete information, including artists’ names and mediums, studio locations, a downloadable map, and suggestions and ideas for planning a personalized tour, please visit the SVAC website: sedonaartistscoalition.org or find SVAC on Facebook.

Climate change will continue to scorch the Southwest, data predict

BY JORDAN EVANS CRONKITE NEWS

PHOENIX – Arizona is known for its torrid summers. But temperature data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compiled by Climate Central show summers will only get hotter thanks to climate change. Earlier this year, a Climate Central report ranked Tucson and Phoenix among the fastestwarming cities in the country, coming in third and fourth, respectively, behind Las Vegas and El Paso, Texas. The independent organization, which is comprised of scientists and journalists, analyzed 242 cities, and only six are cooling or remaining stable. Alaska, New Mexico and Arizona were ranked as the three fastestwarming states in the country. The Southwest U.S. is subject to faster warming due to our arid climate because the specific heat capacity is less in drier air than humid air. Higher temperatures will worsen droughts and heat extremes, the report said. Another report from Climate Central analyzed 244 cities across the U.S. and found that 75% of them recorded an increase in extremely hot days since 1970. “Extremely hot

in Arizona is different from extremely hot in Alaska, but the report showed more thresholds are being crossed in Alaska more often. Phoenix and Tucson have seen increases in extremely hot days since 1970. For Tucson, Climate Central analyzed the number of days greater than 105 degrees; it now experiences roughly 17 more days a year than it did in 1970. In Phoenix – the nation’s

fifth-largest city – the threshold was set at 110 degrees; Phoenix now sees nearly eight more days of extreme heat than a half century ago. Miami has experienced the largest change by far – it has 75 more days above 90 degrees than it did in 1970, the report said. The federal Centers for Disease and Control says extreme heat is the deadliest of all weather hazards. If greenhouse-gas emissions

continue to rise unchecked, the Fourth National Climate Assessment predicts that by the end of the century, extreme heat or cold outbreaks will result in 9,000 additional premature deaths per year across 49 major U.S. cities. Climate change and parks You may think of national parks as places to escape the heat, but rising temperatures are affecting them, too. More than 300 million people

visited national parks all across the nation in 2018. But with a warming planet, that visitation is expected to decrease, especially in lower-latitude parks where warming has been more pronounced. Climate Central’s analysis of 62 national parks found that all but one have shown a warming trend since the

Sensory kits are also available to check out during the event. Also, the Monster Bash will be a place for kids to trick or treating safely. There will be plenty of free candy throughout the complex. But for those children and families are managing food allergies, the Teal Pumpkin Program (TPP) is returning to this year’s event. The TPP offers an alternative for kids where candy treats are not an option and can cause lifethreatening situations. To signify

Movie Review ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP Director: Ruben Fleischer Starring: Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Zooey Duetch Monte’s Rating 2.75 out of 5.00

BY MONTE YAZZIE FILM CRITIC

It’s been a decade since “Zombieland brought a humorous and horror-filled spin to the living dead mythology, crafting a film that would become a shining moment for the overabundant zombie subgenre of horror. The film introduced a group of rag-tag survivors living in an apocalyptic world who form a makeshift family while battling hordes of zombies roaming throughout the U.S. Led by Tallahassee, a fantastic Woody Harrelson hamming it up with glee. Assisted by Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin, each with a city-specific name. “Zombieland had enough gore, enough good laughs and more than enough fun to execute a horror-comedy effectively. It’s amazing that in today’s oversaturated, sequel-ready film world that “Zombieland: Double Tap would take a decade to come to life. While it’s been 10 years in real life - with an Oscar win for Ms. Stone and some performance nominations for Harrelson and Eisenberg - the film doesn’t skip a beat in stepping right back into the zombie world. All the major players have returned, including some new friends tagging along for the fun.

Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) are looking for a place to call home. After battling a group of zombies with all manner of weaponry, they lay claim to an abandoned White House. While Columbus and Wichita work on their blossoming romantic relationship, and Tallahassee seems content making modifications on his vehicle. Little Rock is having growing pains coming to terms with life in Zombieland. “Zombieland: Double Tap is trying to check all the boxes that helped turn the first film into a cult classic. It brings the fun horror moments with slowmotion, living dead carnage and improved super zombies with a particularly clever name. Along with heaping amounts of humorous bragging banter from Woody Harrelson and the scene-stealing role of Zooey Deutch playing a dimwitted survivor named Madison. This sequel does a good job of focusing on having as much fun as it possibly can. While it does a good job of distracting for a quick 99minute run time, the film lacks any cohesive sense of narrative direction.

Where the first film focused on the group dynamic and how one would survive in a world filled with flesh-eating zombies, this film becomes a road trip film that never really knows where it’s going. Even when it arrives at its eventual destination in the final act, the film doesn’t know how it got there, or what to do to wrap everything up. Part of this is because of the lack of chemistry written for the characters and also because the film never seems to aim for these specific narrative results. This sequel feels wholly content trying to recreate everything that made fans love the original. While it entertains just enough, it doesn’t have the same memorable quality of the original film. “Zombieland: Double Tap may not have much direction but it brings back all the familiar humor and horror that made the original film such a hit. It also makes sure to add some welcome characters, like Rosario Dawson playing an Elvis loving fangirl named Nevada. And fresh gags, like a funny look at zombie deaths from around the world are trying to make it feel new, even though it doesn’t really do anything new at all.

Arts Column

Endless possibility in fabrics BY SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake once commented, "There are no boundaries for what can be fabric." In the world of local fabric artist Mimi Damrauer, there are no boundaries in what fabric can be art! Mimi grew up in Sylvania, Ohio with an extremely creative mother and imaginative sisters, there was no end to the art and cooking projects produced in their home. At age nine Mimi boldly declared, "I want to learn to sew." This prompted a trip to the local mall to visit the Singer sewing shop. As Mimi describes it, "One bungled tennis dress later,

the foundation for my selftaught style and later business was created." Soon after Mimi enrolled in art lessons at the Toledo Museum of Art where she learned the basics of color theory (primary and secondary colors). Both experiences lead to Mimi's whimsical style of painting, stitching, drawing and hand-cut wobbly designs that have become her signature design. Mimi has managed a career as a full-time artist for a majority of her working life. She attended college in Madison, Wis., completing a bachelor's degree in theater. In her last semester Mimi decided to take and art/ home economics classes just for the fun of it.

Surprisingly she rediscovered a love of creating designs. Shortly after graduation Mimi moved to Chicago where she worked as a special event planner for nightclubs and restaurants. Her side gig was taking her custom baby blankets and textile artwork to local art fairs where her original creations began to turning heads. She quickly built a clientele of loyal customers. Crate and Barrel took notice and contracted with Mimi to create what would become a best-selling rug “Sebastian, which was featured in their stores nationwide and internationally on their website. Love brought Mimi to Arizona, after reconnecting with her favorite boyfriend from years before. Mimi left corporate Chicago behind and moved to the Phoenix. Today, she operates her studio full-time creating works, meeting clients, giving studio tours and teaching classes. Her textile, collage creations are inspired by a number of cultural influences. Everything from Amish quilting, to tulips growing on a farm in the Pacific Northwest, old brick patterns from historical homes, and the elements of nature's designs and textures. Mimi uses handdyed cotton fabrics along with other textiles purchased from countries across the globe during her extensive travels. Her latest collection is inspired by the art of Asia where she introduces bold, yet simple patterns and hand-stitched application into the design. Mimi creates designs for interiors in both corporate and residential spaces. She frequently works with local interior designers and private clients for custom creations. You can purchase her work on her website or at her north Phoenix studio by appointment. She also travels extensively with the fine art festivals throughout the country. Mimi loves teaching her very popular hand-stitching class based on her "Drunk Circle"

design. She offers classes in your home for groups of friends, to assisted living and senior communities or to resorts. She also has a class for quilt guilds about her own art story. Recently, she also restarted her classes for kids, providing an opportunity for that next talented young artist to walk to center stage with their imaginations. Creative expression is always changing and growing in Mimi's creative world. Currently she is working on a Black & White Collection that is stylish and modern to fit the contemporary

trend in interior business and residential decorating. As a member of the Sonoran Arts League she will also be participating in the annual Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour this November (SonoranArtsLeague. org). Meet her at Beth Zink's Studio #27. For more information or to arrange a studio tour, appointment or schedule a class visit Mimi Damrauer's website at mimidesignsart.com. Prediabetes screenings may lower rate of diabetes among Hispanics, Native Americans

Glucose meters, strips, lancets and such medications as metformin are among the items diabetics must use on a daily basis. For diabetics, checking glucose levels is vital. (Photo by Staff/Cronkite News) BY JODI GUERRERO CRONKITE NEWS

PHOENIX – Hispanics, Native Americans and African Americans are most at risk for diabetes, with racial and ethnic minorities reporting the highest rates of the debilitating disease in the U.S. But experts say diabetes could be slowed if people were aware of the risks of prediabetes and took action. Marcia Angulo was devastated

when she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes three years ago, at age 26. “You feel really ugly, you feel fat, you feel unhealthy,” said Angulo, who controls her condition with regular insulin injections. In Arizona, Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to die of diabetes than nonHispanic whites, according to a

2018 state health report. Genetics and lifestyle factors, such as diet and lack of exercise, contribute to diabetes, experts said. There are two types of diabetes mellitus. Type I, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease that often strikes at a young age and requires insulin to control. Type II, also known as late-onset diabetes, can be prevented,

delayed and managed through lifestyle modifications. Diabetes is stealthy, lurking as prediabetes, said Dr. Mahmoud Alsayed, an endocrinologist at Banner University Medical Center. The key is to get that under control. More than 1 in 3 people in the U.S. have prediabetes but don’t know it, leaving them at risk for diabetes, heart attacks and stroke, according to

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alsayed recommends people at risk for prediabetes get screened every year, whereas the general population gets screened every three years. People with prediabetes “have an abnormal result of glucose in their blood test,” Alsayed said. Angulo, who took charge of her health, recounts her experiences on Diabetypes posts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. “I started sharing motivations,” she said. “That helped me.” Elva Hooker, director of St. Vincent de Paul’s Center of Family Wellness, teaches people how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “They learn about healthy eating, physical activity – then how to plan to take into action those lessons that they’re learning,” Hooker said. They also consider the social and emotional impact of dealing with the diagnosis. The American Diabetes Association recommends a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis. It recommends low-carb and low-calorie foods, as well as vegetarian or vegan foods.

At Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska, the increase has been an alarming 4.3 degrees. Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, at 82%, according to the EPA. As levels increase, so do the temperatures. Earlier this year, NOAA’s Global Monitoring Division observation station at Mauna Loa in Hawaii, recorded its highest level of CO2 in the atmosphere since the evolution

of humans. Climate Central says CO2 is the primary reason why parks are warming, which could directly impact wildlife habitats and snow amounts in the parks. Reduce your ‘carbon footprint’ It is never too late for you to do your part in helping to curb climate change. The Earth Institute at Columbia University has outlined many things you can do to reduce your personal carbon footprint, which the Nature Conservancy defines as the “total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.” Livestock are responsible for 14% of emissions, particularly methane, so eating lower on the

You can save up to 500 pounds of CO2 each year by washing your clothes in cold water because the enzymes in cold water detergent are designed to clean better. If you replace your incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, you’ll reduce your carbon footprint and lower your utility bill. Turning your water heater down to 120 degrees can save up to 550 pounds of CO2 a year. Drive less. An average car produces about 5 tons of CO2 each year. Public transportation, carpooling or rideshare will reduce emissions and reduce road congestion.

Public comment period ending soon for Resolution Copper Mine BY TARA ALATORRE

PHOENIX – The comment period for the Resolution Copper Mine that would disturb approximately 11 square miles of land in the Tonto National Forest near the Town of Superior, ends on November 7, 2019. The project would also include a land exchange. If approved, it would be one of the largest and deepest underground mines in the United States, extending 1,000 feet deep and eventually creating a crater approximately two miles long, according to the federal Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The Resolution mine will destroy the Oak Flat Campground, which is about an hour east of Phoenix and an area considered sacred by the San Carlos Apache Tribe. The tribe has publicly opposed the mine for about five years, holding demonstrations, protests and marches to “Save Oak Flat. Chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, Terry Rambler, told the Phoenix New Times this August that the mine was an “example of environmental justice because the DEIS failed to acknowledge the religious significance of Oak Flat in the Apache’s religion. If the mine is approved by the National Forest it would also include a land

exchange, giving 2,422 acres of Tonto Forest lands, which include the 760-acre Oak Flat Parcel, to the mining company. In exchange, Resolution Copper would give the National Forest 5,376 acres of its private lands. “The private lands that would become federal lands are located in various areas of Arizona including high-priority conservation lands that would become part of the San Pedro Riparian and Las Cienegas national conservation areas, according to the project’s website. One of the parcels the forest service would gain from the land exchange is Tangle Creek, which is located in the heart of Bloody Basin about 35 miles north of the Town of Cave Creek. The parcel is approximately 148 acres, according to Resolution Copper. The electronic web from and instructions on how to comment, along with the DEIS are available on the project’s website (resolutionmineeis.us). The public can also submit written comments by mail to: Resolution EIS Comments, PO Box 34468 Phoenix, AZ 85067-4468. Written comments must be postmarked no later than November 7. For more information visit: https://www. resolutionmineeis.us/.

any retroactive credit and the new $10 monthly credit beginning with their October 2019 bills, stated EPCOR in a press release last week. “Customers who have applied for and are eligible for the deployed service members program will see their bill waived retroactive to their application approval date. According to EPCOR, it will also contribute an additional $21,000 in extra funding to provide credits to customers who were eligible for these programs

going back to the ACC’s original approval of the POAs on April 1, 2019. “When credits first appear on the October bill, some customers may see larger than expected credits or even a negative balance owing on their accounts because the credits have been accumulating while the POAs were waiting for approval, EPCOR stated. Any negative balances or excess credit balance will carry over to the customers next bill. Assistance programs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pet of the week: Meet Zoey ANTHEM - Like a lot of Anthem Pets cats, Zoey was found in Anthem as a stray. She is a tortoise shell (Torti for short) mixed-breed, adult cat. About one to two-years-old, Zoey is the sweetest most loving girl that gets along well with other cats and dogs. She is FIV positive and should be an only cat, or other cats in the home need to be vaccinated against FIV. Cats with FIV can live a long and active life they just have a weakened immune system making it harder for them to fight off illnesses. Zoey is up to date on shots, microchipped, little box trained and spayed. She is ready for a permanent home. The adoption fee is $60. Find her on anthempets.org. or fill out an adoption matchmaker form on anthem pets.org. under resources. Or call 480-287-3542.
