Hopi oral historians to speak in Cave Creek

The Desert Foothills Chapter of the Arizona Archaeology Society invites the public to imagine life without modern means of communication—or even written language—where oral stories become a foundation for traditions. Two guest speakers will be at the chapter’s Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m. meeting at The Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Cave Creek to discuss the oral history surrounding the Hopi way of life. Eric Polingyouma is the last of the highly respected “Blue Bird” clan. He is responsible for carrying on Hopi oral histories and an evolving migration story, and he spent a large portion of his life discovering migration paths from areas around Guatemala and Oaxaca. Eric is director of the Hopi Migration Project, a program that brings the oral tradition of the Hopi to a general audience, and served on the Crow Canyon Native American Advisory Group for many years. Lance Polingyouma is the project recorder for the Hopi Migration Project, which involves translating oral histories into a more tangible format. A member of the Hopi Sun clan, Lance attended University of Massachusetts at

Under the sun — Anthem held its last farmers market for the year on Sunday. Many people took advantage of the mild weather and patronized the open-air market. More than a dozen vendors lined sidewalks and visitors had lots of green vegetables, baked breads and other tasty fare to choose from.

These sponsorship opportunities for Anthem’s big day range from $100 to $10,000, and each level of giving comes with its own set of perks for the sponsor. For those who donate raffle materials valued at $100 or more for the Anthem Civic Building’s grand opening and a follow-up event later this year, sponsors will receive recognition via Anthem’s website. A $200 sponsorship will get donors a full page in the 15th anniversar y memor y book, which will be sold all year long. The names of these sponsors will also be included on other marketing materials. One $300 sponsorship is available for Anthem’s 15th anniversary commemorative quilt and must be purchased by Jan. 10. The quilt—featuring Lindsay Boggs’ winning logo—will be displayed in the Anthem Civic Building

Daisy Mountain Quilters donated their time to create the quilt. Light pole pennant sponsorships are available for $500 each. Pennants will be going up throughout the year and will display the name of a sponsor, which that person will be able to keep at the conclusion of the event. The names of pennant sponsors will also be displayed on other marketing materials. Grand opening celebrations for the Anthem Civic Building will have special events taking place in each room, which may be sponsored for $500 per room. Room sponsors may set up a table to distribute information about their business, perform music, hold arts and crafts activities or to host giveaways. Sales, however, will not be allowed. The deadline for sponsoring one of the five available rooms is Jan. 15. Two time capsule sponsorships are also available at $1,000 each and must be purchased by

Rather than sponsoring specific events at Anthem’s 15th anniversary celebration, the public may also show its support with general sponsorships. These start at $2,500 and provide benefits such as half-page ads in Anthem publications, banners and more. The highest tier of general sponsorships also includes honorary name plaques at the civic building, a table at the grand opening event and more. Ryan Sims, lead vocalist for EastonAshe, is teaming up with The Foothills Food Bank Jan. 11 at Harold’s in Cave Creek. The local singer will be celebrating the release of his first solo album with a showcase and performance, as well as a special reunion from EastonAshe. The event will also benefit The Foothills Food Bank which, like other food banks throughout the Valley, continues to be in great need of donations. Guests at the Jan. 11 show at Harold’s are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items or cash donations to support The Foothills Food Bank.
