Art show features Arizona’s best STAFF REPORT
The Arizona Fine Art EXPO, (EXPO) featuring more than 100 studios filled with artists working on their art, gets under way Jan. 19 and will run through April 1 at the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax Roads in North Scottsdale. The show features paintings, charcoals, and pastels, etchings, rapidograph pen cross-hatching, drawings, photography, stone, copper, clay, wood, metal sculptures, bronzes, jewelry, wood sculpting, stone carving, furniture and more.
Art being created will be for sale. Commissions also will be welcomed. The event supports the American Healing Arts Foundation, which offers veterans the chance to take art classes throughout the expo’s ten-week run. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, along with other issues remain high for both wounded and uninjured soldiers returning from service. Art has proven to be a form of therapy for many veterans, giving them a chance to witness their own creative side while having a chance to reunite with
fellow veterans in a peaceful environment. The EXPO is donating one dollar out of every $10 season pass sold to the American Healing Arts Foundation. Open daily from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., a one-time season pass is available for adults for $10 with seniors and military obtaining entry for $8. Passes can be purchased ahead of time at 480-837-7163 or at the gate. For information about the event go to arizonafineartexpo. com or call 480-837-7163. Parking for the event is free. The Art EXPO is located at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road.

After watching his team play six games in four days coach Jeff Vittorio said his Cactus Shadows Falcons girls soccer team exhibited a lot of great attributes in advancing to the finals of the inaugural Arizona Soccer Showcase. While the finale of the 24-team event went to Iolani, a team from Hawaii, by a 1-0 margin on Friday, the Falcons veteran coach of eight years said he could find little to be disappointed about in his team. Despite playing the event shorthanded due to injuries and holiday travel plans the Falcons advanced to the title game by winning their first five matches.
A historic building in Black Canyon City has a new home to start 2012. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Black Canyon Historical Society the Old Canon School Museum was moved to the Black Canyon Heritage Park. The move of the building, which has stood since 1926, came on Thursday, the culmination of an effort that was put into works back in 2007. “We didn’t have anybody going through the museum because they couldn’t find it,” Black Canyon Historical Society President Robert A. Niles said. “Even locals would end up calling me when they were trying to get there.”

The one-room school house was used through 1952 when D.J. Albins traded five acres of land to build a bigger school for the 1.5 acres of land where the school sat up until Thursday. Now, instead of being tucked away amid Black Canyon City’s Head Start Campus, the museum sits in Heritage Park, which will be dedicated on April 21 of this year. “We’re developing the park, which sits on 30 acres of land,” Black Canyon Historical Society Vice President Tom Kenson said. “The museum will sit next to the visitor’s center. We think it will get a lot more exposure in its new location.”
