Suspected serial killer linked to Peoria Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting nine murders in three weeks

PHOENIX – A suspect has been linked to nine homicides, after Phoenix Police arrested Cleophus Cooksey Jr. in December for allegedly shooting and killing his mother and her husband. If he is convicted, it will make him one of the most prolific serial killers in the state’s history.

On Dec. 17, 2017 Phoenix Police responded to call of shots being fired on Highland Road near Central Avenue, when they arrived on scene they found Cooksey’s mother, Rene Cooksey, and stepfather, Edward Nunn, dead from gunshot wounds, according to police reports.

“Phoenix Police officers arrested Cooksey on scene and

he’s been in jail since, but our detectives didn’t stop there,” said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams in a press conference on January 18.

Investigators were able to quickly link the suspect to seven other homicides in the Valley by using new technology implemented as part of the National Crime Gun Intelligence Center. All of the homicides linked to Cooksey occurred in Phoenix, Avondale and Glendale between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Those tools allowed police to review ballistic information swiftly from one crime scene, and compare details from another crime scene, ultimately leading to the break in this case, Chief Williams said.

of nine counts of first-degree murders, theft of a firearm, robbery, sexual assault, and being a prohibited possessor, police said.

Arizona Republic reported that one of the victims was the brother of an ex-girlfriend, the others were meetings set up online or through texts; one meeting being described by police as an alleged drug deal.

The victims include: • Andrew Remillard, 27, and Parker Smith, 21, who were found dead on Nov. 27, 2017.

• Salim Richards, 35, who was critically wounded on Dec. 2, 2017, and later died.

• Jesus Bonifacio Real, 25, the brother of Cooksey’s exgirlfriend was found dead on Dec. 11, 2017.

• Latorrie Beckford, 29, was found with fatal gun wounds on Dec. 13, 2017.

• Kristopher Comeron, 21, was discovered dead in a field with gunshot wounds on Dec. 16, 2017.

• Maria Villanueva, 43, was found dead after allegedly being kidnapped from her car on Dec. 16, 2017.

These homicide cases are still open ongoing investigations and if anyone has information they are urged to call 480-WITNESS.

PEORIA – On the morning of January 17, a driver in a truck stolen from Mesa was involved in a head-on collision on 83rd Avenue near Thunderbird Road. The driver was driving northbound in the southbound lanes, and the collision involved four vehicles, with one driver transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses say the suspect, identified as 24-year-old, Jaime Longoria Valenzuela, fled the scene of the accident on foot.

Officers in the area quickly located him in the neighborhood near 80th Drive and west Wacker Road, and as the officer approached the suspect, he allegedly pointed a handgun at the officer and took off running.

According to reports, the suspect ran through multiple back yards around 80th Drive and Thunderbird Road, several officers encountered him, and shots were exchanged. One of the officers’ shot and hit the suspect in the leg, according to police reports.

Additional officers and paramedics responded, and the suspect was transported by ground to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

No citizens and no officers were injured during the incident.

Valenzuela was released from the hospital, and will be transported to the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s 4th Avenue Jail for processing. Preliminary charges will include several aggravated assault charges, stolen vehicle, and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Although no students were involved, and the incident did not happen on school grounds, Centennial High School was briefly placed on lockdown until the suspect was detained as a precaution due to the proximity of the events to the campus.

Over the course of this incident, the Department of Public Safety and Glendale Police Department assisted with traffic direction and handling some calls for service.

I don’t like to make fun of people. Well, not usually. But I have to admit, the horror coming out of Oregon now that folks might have to pump their own gasoline is nothing short of mind-boggling. Yes, it seems two states in our great nation never required (allowed) anyone to have the privilege of pumping their own gas. New Jersey (still freaking out that they might “be next”) and Oregon wereexempt from the mundane, inconvenient (and evidently scary) task

of filling up their own tanks with petro.

In Oregon, if you are in a small county (40,000 or less) your life just got more complicated. You will now have to know many details about your gas tank that you never wanted know. After pulling up carefully in front of the pump, you will have to swipe a credit card, figure out how to open the flap over the tank, unscrew the cap and then do the unthinkable; grab a hose and start pumping!

What are people saying who must suffer through this? “I do not even know where my gas tank is located and I don’t want to know!” (Better find out).

“I am not about to go to a gas station on the way to work and get gas all over myself and smell like gasoline all day!” (Maybe go on the way home from work?).

“It is a safety hazard for anyone untrained to have to pump their gas! (Hmmm, kids can do it).

One local radio host claimed that she will not “tolerate” standing out in freezing cold, wind and rain to perform a task that only a “qualified” and “trained” person should do! Yikes! I love this lady. Come to think about it, there have been times it was pretty darn cold in Prescott to brave the elements to stand outside and gas up. Other times I thought I might pass out from the triple digit inferno in Phoenix while at the pump.

Yet, somehow, we all seem to endure!

Okay, I get it. We adults do not always want to learn something new. I remember the first time my mother learned to pump gas was after my father died.

My brother used to go over to her house, drive her car and gas it up for her, until one day she protested and said, “I have to learn.” So off to the gas station they went and my mother had many “lessons” before- at age eighty- she quipped, “this is a piece of cake.”

The entire “Oregon experience” has caused a panic in the state of New Jersey.

Should driving while suspended be decriminalized?

Under current law, if you don’t pay your traffic tickets, your driver license will be suspended. If you get caught driving while your license is suspended, you can be charged with a misdemeanor. A bill in the Arizona legislature would change that.

House Bill 2169 would decriminalize driving on a suspended license. It would change the law to read that a person, who drives while their privilege to drive is suspended for failing to pay their civil traffic fines, “is responsible for a civil traffic violation.” This is consistent with a national trend; but it is controversial.

For some people, the simple act of receiving a traffic ticket can start a series of events that has a devastating impact on their life. If they receive a civil traffic ticket, for something like speeding or a carpool

lane violation, and they don’t pay it, then their license will be suspended.

If they are pulled over again, they will likely be charged with the criminal offense of driving on a suspended license. If that person’s car insurance has also expired, then their car will likely be impounded.

Getting your car out of impound can be a hassle; but without transportation, many will not even be able to get to work. Without a job, there may be no way to pay criminal court fines or to even get to a criminal court date. In many circumstances, a judge will sign an arrest warrant. In addition to having no job, no license, and an active warrant, many may also be facing an eviction action for nonpayment of rent.

While some of these problems can be avoided by simply showing up to court on the correct day at the correct time, some argue that such a system amounts to a criminalization of poverty. Few would claim that becoming either unemployed or homeless (or both) is a just result for someone who cannot pay their traffic tickets.

In response, courts are willing to work with people and even allow community service in lieu of fines when authorized.

Nearly every court now removes suspensions of driver

licenses as people pay off their outstanding fines with a payment plan. Payment in full to get your license back is generally no longer required.

But House Bill 2169 goes a significant step further. By decriminalizing driving on a suspended license, no arrest warrants would ever be issued and nobody would end up in jail simply because they ignored their obligations in connection with traffic fines.

This could, however, create a new set of problems.

If the only sanction for driving on a suspend license is that your license remains suspended, it would provide an incentive for people to not prioritize fines payments. Some people won’t care and will continue to rack up traffic violations, essentially with impunity.

An approach to a social problem such as this, is a policy decision for the legislative and for the executive branches.

Nobody wants to punish people just because they are poor; but nobody also wants to drive on roads and on highways where people can ignore traffic laws.

community news Carefree Desert Gardens announces photo contest CAREFREE – Calling all photographers!

The annual Carefree Desert Gardens photo contest is in full swing and photos submissions will be taken up to Jan. 31. The purpose of the contest is to highlight the beauty of the gardens and to celebrate the many events, types of plants and nature that exists within Carefree’s town core.

Winners will be selected by renowned photographer, Jerry Sieve, on Feb. 1, and those winners will be displayed for people’s choice voting from Feb. 20-26 at the Desert Foothills Library. The Magic of Light and Shadow

Tolstoy wrote in his novel Anna Karenina, “All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.” The study of light and shadow, its mystery and brilliance, was an early fascination for local artist Beth Hyatt. As a child, growing up in Jacksonville, Illinois, her enthusiasm for photography and drawing, was fueled by early recognition for her talents, through numerous awards from entering a variety of art contests in her early years.

Beth moved to Chicago, after graduating from high school, to pursue an art career at the Art Institute of Chicago, but life had other plans. Her tall, willowy figure attracted the attention of the fashion industry, and her training, in dance as a teen, gave her an easy poise and

sense of composition in the camera lens. As a consequence she soon became one of Victor Skrebneski’s top fashion models. This resulted in covers with a number of nationally recognized magazines, one of the most notably the James Bond Playboy cover of 1965.

This success would later enable her to launch “Model Image Center” with her partner, Diane Pryde, for the purpose of helping young women build their own modeling careers.

In 2002, Beth left the modeling business behind and moved to Arizona. She returned to her foundation and love of the arts. Beth took her first painting class in 2004; the use of light, shadow, and pattern produced compelling and powerful images. Beth’s reputation as an award winning fine artist

SCOTTSDALE – In December the Foothills Animal Rescue celebrated its first anniversary at the Brynne Smith Memorial Campus and Adoption Center in North Scottsdale. During that time the rescue has seen a nearly 50 percent increase in the number of animals adopted.

The rescue credits its success to the building’s non-traditional look and feel, priding itself in being a cage-free shelter.

Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) has “cat rooms” and “doggie suites” instead of cages, with calming music

played throughout the shelter.

The building design also has specialized air circulation, which provides people and pets with fresh air; not the smell typically associated with animal shelters.

The Smith Family graciously sponsored the Brynne Smith Memorial Campus and Adoption Center, after their daughter, Brynne, suddenly passed away. Brynne’s family was eager to keep her memory alive by helping homeless pets in her honor.

To further honor Brynne, her family will be sponsoring the adoption fees for all dogs and cats adopted on Friday, Jan. 26., which is her birthday. Adoption fees normally range from $50 to $200.

The adoption special is only for pets adopted at FAR’s Brynne Smith Memorial Campus, which is located at 10197 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale. The shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All pets adopted from FAR are neutered or spayed, microchipped and vaccinated.

Employee holds robbery suspects at gunpoint until police arrive PHOENIX – On January 12, around 2 a.m., officers responded to an armed robbery at a business in the area of 15000 North Tatum.

The employee whom was working at the business at the time, shot one of the suspects and then held both at gunpoint until officers arrived on the scene.

The male suspect was transported to a Valley hospital with non-life-threatening

injuries. At the time the article was written his name or condition was not yet released.

The female suspect, 31-yearold, Brittany Reid, was detained at the scene and taken to the Maricopa County Jail. Reid was booked for one count of taking contraband and is awaiting her initial hearing.

This is an active ongoing investigation.

Amidst fiery explosions, rockets flying overhead, and swirls of smoke billowing towards the sky, a group of American Special Forces soldiers ride atop horses with guns blazing; it’s a scene that feels straight out of a John Wayne film- if his war and western movies would crossover.

Director Nicolai Fuglsig composes “12 Strong,” the true story of the horse soldiers who invaded Afghanistan after September 11th, with all the visual chaos familiar with a Jerry Bruckheimer/ Michael Bay popcorn movie, and the simplistic non-political patriotism of a John Wayne film.

On the morning of September 11th, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth) is enjoying his life in a new home with his family. The smoldering vision of the Twin Towers motivates Nelson to return to his special forces team and demand to be the first team on the ground in Afghanistan.

A plan is devised to have the special forces team meet up with warlord General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces who have created a stronghold in the mountains.

“12 Strong” moves at breakneck speed, before much can be established with the special forces team they are on the ground in Afghanistan taking shelter in a small village. It’s a quick transition but it doesn’t distract from what the film is trying to achieve, which is ultimately the conflict that will play out amidst gunfire and explosions. To this point, Mr. Fuglsig does a decent job of keeping everything appealing, the battle scenes are flashy and fervent, while the camaraderie of the team is provided humorous moments that immediately connect the viewer with the group of soldiers.

It’s a simple war movie, tough guys, in a tough situation, making tough choices

that put them in danger for sake of the greater good. There is nothing wrong with that quality, “12 Strong’ will play just fine during the 2-hour plus run time. Unfortunately, the good feeling is fleeting and that will make it somewhat unmemorable in the long run. The film never looks at the larger picture of war and the relationships of these men.

The politics, that will come to identify domestic and foreign relationships between different countries in the ensuring conflict, is mentioned in small moments when shifts in the narrative are needed to motivate action.

Still, there are some really interesting aspects hinted at in a few scenes. The relationship between a young boy tasked with protecting an American soldier is touching and fascinating while the push and pull for power and respect between Nelson and Dostum has such potential for expanding these characters. Once the battles start happening more consistently, the story takes a back seat.

The performances here are committed, each actor is trying to portray that lookdanger-in-the-eye mentality in every scene. None are provided introspection, these are simply soldiers doing their job. That’s a nice quality at times.

Mr. Hemsworth plays the lead with confidence, and Michael Shannon is offered a few moments to put his unique touch on the character; surprisingly the best character in the film is General Dostum (Navid Negahban) who has a mentor/teacher structure with Mr. Hemsworth’s character. This is the best part of the film, the moments when culture, respect, and servitude clash between two men who are pursuing the same goal, but for completely different reasons is intriguing “12 Strong” will satisfy those looking for a unique war story, unfortunately it may not have the lasting power of some of the greater war films. The simplistic structure and one-sided narrative design are the biggest problems here, however the charming quality of the cast and straightforward war mentality will keep this more positive than negative.

ARIZONA – Students from kindergarten to eighth grade will have the opportunity to name this year’s wild-born Mexican gray wolves in the sixth annual Lobos of the Southwest Pup Naming Contest.

Every January the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team tracks the population of the Mexican wolf, which is an endangered species, in an annual year-end survey.

Scientists capture, collar and identify each wolf they find with a unique number, including wild-born pups to track the recovery of the species.

Lobos of the Southwest, which is an organization striving to recover the Mexican gray wolf through advocacy, uses the survey to give names to the pups found. The wolves mostly live in Arizona and New Mexico in an area known as the Blue Range Recovery Area, which is managed by U.S. Wildlife Service.

“We believe that these critically endangered animals deserve more than generic numbers, so we are reaching out to children,” according to the Lobos of the Southwest’s website.

One wolf, Echo, who was named in the contest, caught the nation’s attention in 2015, when

she became the first wolf seen near the Grand Canyon’s North Rim in seventy-years; and was accidently shot and killed by a hunter in Utah soon after.

Mexican wolves are one of the most endangered mammals in North America, and are a federally protected species.

There is an ongoing recovery effort from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department to reintroduce populations of the native predators back into their natural habitats, with only fewer than 120 roaming wild, according to The Center of Biological Diversity.

“The contest is a great tool to bring more awareness of the plight of Mexican wolves, particularly to children within the Southwest and beyond,” said Maya Rommwatt, coordinator at Lobos of the Southwest.

The naming contest is open to children across the globe, and all entries must be received by February 1, and submitted to namelobopups@gmail.com.

“Every year dozens of children express their admiration of the Mexican gray wolf by entering the annual pup naming contest,” she said. “Winners see their entries publicized on our website and in social media, and more importantly, they watch the wolf pup they’ve named live a wild and free life.”

NORTHWEST VALLEY – Rick Gray is heading back to the state capitol, this time to the Senate. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed Gray, a Republican, as the new State Senator for Legislative District 21. Gray will replace Republican Debbie Lesko, who stepped aside to run for an open U.S. Congressional seat. District 21 covers much of northwest Maricopa County including; Peoria, El Mirage, and Sun City.

Gray used to represent District 21 in the state house.

“Rick knows his way around the Capitol” said District 4 Supervisor Clint Hickman, whose supervisorial district encompasses the legislative district. “As the House Majority Whip, he had experience building relationships and pushing through an agenda to benefit District 21 and the entire state. I’m confident he’ll take what he learned and represent the Northwest Valley well in the Senate.”

Gray’s previous assignments in the House have included being Majority Whip, Chairman of Transportation and Infrastructure, Vice Chairman of the Rules Committee, Vice Chairman of the Commerce Committee, and a member of the House Appropriations Committee. He is also a small business owner.

“I’ve been serving this community ever since I moved here in 2006, whether in the legislature, on community boards, or in other roles” Gray said. “I look at this appointment as a continuation of that service, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

As required by law, the board selected Gray from a list of three candidates submitted by the Legislative District 21 Precinct Committeemen. Gray will serve until the next primary elections in 2018.

CAVE CREEK – The Town of Cave Creek just added a late-night restaurant to the

dining scene; Filiberto’s had its grand opening, and ribbon cutting ceremony at its new

location on Cave Creek and Lone Mountain roads on Thursday, January 18.

The restaurant offers fastcasual Mexican comfort food, and has a drive-thru window available.

Filiberto’s Cave Creek is located at 31414 north Cave Creek Road, and is open Monday through Thursday and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and from 6 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, making it one of the few late-night options available in the town.

“Today we are just as excited as we were in the beginning of our journey. Our enthusiasm is not solely based on growth but on our integrity,” the owners of Filiberto’s said.

Filiberto’s launched its first restaurant in 1993 in Mesa, Ariz., since then it has added more than 55 locations across three states. The restaurant prepares the food fresh daily, and is known for its carne asada burritos.

Residents are encouraged to bring old bills, personal files, old bank statements, tax returns older than seven years and other documents containing personal identifying information to shred.

Documents will be collected on site, locked in bins and shredded by Arizona Document Destruction at their

secure facility. All shredded documents will be recycled.

In addition to shredding, Phoenix Police officers will collect unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication for proper destruction.

Red Cross blood shortage prompts urgent call for donations

ARIZONA — Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood donation.

This January during National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types to help address a winter blood donation shortage.

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year, with more than 150 blood drives forced to cancel, which caused over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

“Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients,” said Clifford

Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “It’s the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency, and that’s why we’re asking eligible individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets today.”

This is in addition to seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday schedules collectively contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December.

In fact, Arizona has had the highest number of seasonal cases of influenza in Arizona since influenza test became reportable, with 2,453 cases reported in the last week of December alone, and there are over 700% more flu cases this year compared to last year the Arizona Department of Health reported.

Serving local hospitals is the first priority for Red Cross, because it can move blood products to where they’re needed most. This allows

generous donors throughout the country to contribute to the national blood supply and potentially help patients locally and in heavily-affected areas.

While all blood types are urgently needed, there is a more critical need for the following blood and donation types right now, platelets, type O negative, type B negative and type AB. Eligible donors can find a blood or platelet donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS).

Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

RapidPass lets donors complete the pre-donation reading and answer the health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, by visiting redcrossblood.org/rapidpass, or through the app.

Phoenix PD launches Catch 22 program;

Offers tipsters quick cash reward in attempts to arrest wanted felons TARA ALATORRE STAFF

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Police Department launched a new program on January 10 called, Catch 22, which is an expedited attempt to arrest 22 wanted felons by offering tipsters a $500 cash reward as soon as the suspect is in custody.

The department will be releasing the 22 cases of wanted felons throughout January and February, and Silent Witness will pay $500 cash to the tipster who provides the information that leads to their arrest. So far, Phoenix PD has sent out four suspects as part of the

newly launched program, and at the time this article was written they were still at large: 1. Mark Richard Sims, is a 62-year-old white male, he is 6’04” with hazel eyes and brown hair. He is wanted for a probation violation from a class 3 felony charge of attempting to commit molestation of a child, according to police.

2. Noelle Bates is a 30-year-old white female with outstanding warrants for drug possession and for possession of a stolen vehicle. She has tattoos of stars around her left eye.

3. Kevin Harness, is an 18-year-old black male,

he is six-feet-tall, and is accused by police for being an accomplice of breaking in an occupied vehicle’s window, threatening a driver with a gun, and forcing the victim to drive around to withdraw gift cards and money from their accounts.

4. Jose Pedro Moreno Leyva is a Hispanic male, he is 200 pounds, six feettall with brown eyes. Leyva is wanted for a serious hit and run, after he allegedly collided with a Phoenix Police Officer and fled the scene.
