Three walk Bulls rumble through Cave Creek venue away from plane crash Eric Quade Editor

The three people inside a small aircraft that crashed Feb. 4 at Deer Valley Airport all survived the ordeal. According to Ian Gregor, public affairs manager for the Federal Aviation Administration, a single engine plane crashed at about 11:30 that morning and caught fire after impact. Responding emergency personnel reported that only one of the three people on board had been harmed, suffering minor injuries. At least one area news organization gave a conflicting account, however, reporting that all three of the plane’s occupants had been taken to medical facilities for their injuries, which were not life-threatening. Albert Nixon, lead investigator on the Deer Valley Airport crash for the National Transportation Safety Board, said that while he could not go into detail about the specific injuries incurred, differences on how agencies classify wounds might be the reason behind the apparent discrepancies. His agency reported one victim with a serious injury and another person with a minor injury. An official determination from the NTSB regarding the cause of a crash often takes several months, but Nixon said that preliminary investigation results are expected by later this week. The aircraft has been moved to another site .

Proposed site — Merrill Gardens, a proposed senior housing development in Anthem, would be erected in the open lot next to St. Rose Catholic Church.

Many local residents attended a special meeting Thursday evening at the Anthem Community Center regarding the possibility of a senior housing development going up in their neighborhood in a few years. The venue consisted of spokespersons from the interested company—Seattle-based Merrill Gardens—pitching their idea to the community, and members of the audience voicing their support or concerns. Bill Pettit of Merrill Gardens said that his company jumped into the housing arena for senior living 20 years ago, constructing homes in many states across the western and southern parts of the United States. These homes, as small as a studio apartment and as large as a two-bedroom apartment, target the “middle market,” rather than luxury housing and are available to tenants at least 62 years old. Most residents are closer to age 80, though, he said.

Anthem man dies in semi collision Eric Quade Editor

An Anthem man died early Monday morning when his SUV collided head-on with a semi on I-17 near the Anthem Way exit. Authorities reported that the victim, 34-year-old John. F. Maxwell, had been traveling south in the freeway’s northbound lanes around midnight. The crash resulted in Maxwell’s red Jeep being crushed and the semi catching fire. The two people in the semi’s cab were able to get out of their vehicle without injury, but Maxwell was found dead at the scene. Dave Wilson, PIO of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department, said that firefighters had been combating the semi blaze that morning with foam, and a ladder truck had stayed there to help with extrication efforts for
