NEW RIVER – A local dog sanctuary, Rusty’s Angels, which specializes in caring for and re-homing senior-aged
dogs is a top five finalist for a $15,000 national award in the Alba Botanica’s Do Good, Do Beautiful Grant Program. If Rusty’s Angels is one of the top two organizations with the most
online votes it will receive the grant funding; and it is asking for the community to support them by voting online daily. The Do Good, Do Beautiful Grant celebrates everyday women doing extraordinary good in the world, and it will be awarding two female-led organizations $15,000 to create, expand or sustain a project in their non-profit organization. Alba Botanica’s panelists chose only five finalists from over 250 entries from around the county, and Rusty’s Angels is the only Arizona-based organization, and the only dog rescue in the top five. “We just need everyone to

Anthem Community Council CEO tenders resignation
TARA ALATORRE STAFF
ANTHEM – On January 24, at the Anthem Community Council Board of Directors meeting,
President Roger Willis made the resignation announcement that, Jenna Kohl, will officially leave her position as the ACC Community Executive Officer effective February 15. Kohl, who has served as the ACC’s CEO since 2010, will go on to serve as the Executive Director of the DC Ranch Community Council in Scottsdale. Kohl was unable to attend the January 24 meeting, but she wrote a statement that was read by President Willis. “I’m not just leaving a community, a physical place, but much more – special
people, rich traditions, history, shared experiences. Anthem has all of that in spades,” she said in the statement. “I am truly lucky to have been part of Anthem’s journey, through its growing pains into the lively, amenity rich, financially stable community that it is today.” The board appointed officer, Neal Shearer, ACC’s Community Operations Officer, as internal interim CEO. He has served as the ACC’s COO since 2010, and will assume Kohl’s responsibilities until the board determines the next steps in filling the position.

More water woes for New River, Desert Hills TARA ALATORRE STAFF
DESERT HILLS – Just when New River and Desert Hills thought its water troubles had been temporarily quelled, EPCOR recently announced that the new location for its water standpipe, which will supply residents with approximately 50,000 gallons of drinking water a day, will have to be relocated. The new location of the standpipe is in the same area as the original site announced in December, but slightly east and set back about 145 feet north of Desert Hills Road. The new location is closer to Meridian Avenue, which means it is closer to Anthem and that is causing some concern from residents about the truck traffic.
The final layout plans for the new standpipe location should be completed by this week, and on February 22 the Anthem Community Council will vote on whether or not to approve the new location. Maricopa Department of Transportation and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will then need to approve the new plans before construction can officially begin, according to Troy Day, the Vice President of Arizona Operations at EPCOR. Day still believes the pipe can be completed in time for the April deadline before the water haulers’ permits expire, which would potentially leave many residents in the community high
