Following a 9-1 loss to Pinnacle on April 16 Boulder Creek coach Joe McDonald was pretty blunt with his assessment of his team’s postseason chances. The formula was simple to sum up, but seemed very difficult to execute. With five games remaining in their season the veteran coach stated his team’s postseason hopes would rest on their ability to win out. While that prediction proved inaccurate, as they only needed to win four out of five, his prediction that

Robert W. Patrick, the director of the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., was in Glendale at ASU West on Sunday. The keynote speaker at the Veterans Heritage Project’s reception and book signing, Patrick told a crowd of approximately 625 how Congress tasked his department with working to preserve the memories of the nation’s veterans.
Without much money devoted to the project, Patrick said the hope was groups across the country would take up the charge. “We have approximately 300 high schools across the country that are contributing to this project, but no one in the country has done more than Barbara Hatch and her students at Cactus Shadows High School,” he said. The performances will cover a range of genres from alternative, to blues, to rock, pop, heavy metal, soul and country. The only common element for the day-long show Saturday at Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek is that all of the artists taking the stage will be women. The 4th annual Chickstock Music Festival is a showcase put together by co-founders Pandy Raye and Rhonda Hitchcock. While the headliner will be Lucinda Williams, a Grammy award winner, Raye and Hitchcock are most proud of the acts that will be performing earlier in the day.

Four years ago Raye and Hitchcock, who call themselves Chicks with Picks, decided they would lend their experience in the music industry to try and help young and upcoming female artists. “We’d see each other when we were performing with our own bands and we wondered where the other female artists were. We never anticipated what this has become,” Hitchcock said. “We knew there was a pocket of talent that hadn’t been discovered here in Arizona, but we opened the flood gates. I think three months in we had 35 girls that wanted to be part of this and it has grown
