Meeting discusses flood threat following Gladiator Fire MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR
Marc Buckhout/The Foothills Focus
Flooding in January of 2010 resulted in several Black Canyon City residents losing their homes. The Gladiator Fire in Crown King has created ground conditions that have left Black Canyon City susceptible to a difficult monsoon season.
A meeting informing Black Canyon City residents about the possibility of a damaging monsoon season will take place at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Albin’s Community Center. Yavapai County Supervisor Tom Thurman, County Flood Control Unit Manager Charlie Cave, County Engineer/ Assistant County Manager Phil Bourdon and County Public Works Director Byron Jaspers will conduct the meeting, offering suggestions on what residents can do to prepare for possible flooding. The recent Gladiator Fire in Crown King is the primary
concern leading to expectations of a difficult flood season. “The monsoon season doesn’t usually get fired up until the middle of July, but we want to give people time to prepare,” Thurman said. “The problem is with that much ground that has been burned there isn’t much plant life left to soak up the water in a lot of areas. Once the ground gets saturated it won’t absorb any of that water. Another problem is that you’re going to have debris being washed down the creek with the water and then it gets caught up in places it shouldn’t.”

Anthem offers presentation on proposed purchase MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR
Anthem staff plans to spend much of its time between now and June 27 talking to members of the community about the possible purchase of the property at 3701 W. Anthem Way. On April 25 the council voted unanimously to move forward with a non-binding agreement to purchase the 36,500 square foot building for $2.3 million with a conditional 90-day due diligence period to establish the community’s opinion on the potential purchase. On May 30 at the Anthem Community Center Chief Executive Officer Jenna Kollings offered the background on how the council came to bid on the building, how it will be financed and how the building will be used should the council approve its purchase. A crowd of approximately 30, including council board president Craig Boates and board vice president Ray Norris, attended the meeting. The push to look to buy the building came from many motivations. The Anthem Community Council currently spends $110,000 annually to lease space in the building at 3701 W. Anthem Way to house the staff of
