Anthem council plans for new building MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR

Now that Anthem has purchased 3701 W. Anthem Way with designs for it to be a multi-purpose facility for the community serving functions ranging from office space for council and HOA staff, a welcome center, providing a home for law enforcement entities serving the area, as well as social, educational and entertainment opportunities, the next step is to convert the 36,500 square foot building so it is able to meet those demands.

At the August Anthem Community Council meeting the Anthem Community Council voted unanimously to approve the process by which that project gets under way.

Chief Executive Officer Jenna Kollings detailed a plan in which a selection team, consisting of staff, a board member and then volunteers from the community with experience in selecting a project manager for the design build, will come up with a recommendation to make to the board in time for either the October or the November council meeting.

For the second straight season the Cactus Shadows Falcons football team hung with the Boulder Creek Jaguars for a half, but like the 2011 seasonopener the Jaguars turned a competitive halftime contest into a second half blowout.

A year after falling 48-20 in the 2011 season opener the Falcons saw the Jaguars hold them scoreless in the second half of the 2012 season opener on Friday as the visitors from Anthem turned a 16-14 halftime

lead into a 50-14 final.

Cactus Shadows coach Greg Davis didn’t hide his disappointment.

“It didn’t seem like anybody could make a play tonight,” he said. “We missed tackles.

We dropped passes. Just everything. We played pretty poorly in the first half so to only be down two should have been reason for optimism. Instead we let that first play of the second half affect us. We had that here we go again reaction.”

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars turned out to honor Daisy Mountain firefighter Matt Wood with the 2011 VFW Firefighter of the Year award Monday at the board’s monthly meeting.

VFW member Dennis Hider, of the Daisy Mountain Post 12031, presented FF Wood with the prestigious award, which went through a national selection process.

Wood received a standing ovation as the award was presented.

At approximately 9 a.m., on July 3, 2010 Wood, who was off duty was driving with his children when he noticed some smoke near apartments at 7th Street and Grovers. Wood pulled over, secured his children in the vehicle and jumped a fence to get access.

Wood, a DMFD Fire Investigator, called in the fire assignment to dispatch and took command of the incident with his portable radio.

Daisy Mountain firefighter Matt Wood, center, was honored Monday as the 2011 VFW Firefighter of the Year. While off duty Wood was the first on the scene of an apartment fire in Phoenix, pulling a trapped man from his home after calling in the fire.

Wood identified a trapped homeowner. Wood helped to extricate the homeowner through a window, as fire blocked access from the door.

As the first Phoenix Fire Engine arrived, Wood gave a brief rundown to the Captain and then assisted that crew with securing a water source as well as pulling a hand line for crews to operate. In all, 10 apartments were destroyed with significant

damage to two buildings.

Wood’s quick actions and courage in the face of adversity certainly saved countless lives and additional property.

The Daisy Mountain Fire District was formed in 1988. The district covers approximately 100 square miles, and serves roughly 50,000 citizens from the communities of Anthem, Desert Hills and New River, Arizona.

Due to the broad nature of work the building requires Kollings said she wouldn’t rule out having a joint bid under one named construction manager.

“Once we have board approval we want to be able to hit the ground running,” she said. “The goal is to make the building the premiere gathering place in Anthem.”

Kollings added Anthem has been in talks with the Maricopa County Sherriff’s office regarding leasing space at 3701 W. Anthem Way and that those negotiations are going well. She also mentioned that there will be a community page on the onlineatanthem.com which will keep the public up to date on the progress of the renovation project.

In other news at the August meeting, Renee Palmer Jones, the designer for the Anthem Veterans Memorial, announced the memorial is now a state historical site following passage by the state legislature.

Public Affairs and Communications Director Shannon Wallace added that the historic site plaque has arrived and will be installed somewhere at the memorial prior to this year’s Memorial Day ceremony.

Palmer Jones also announced the Arizona Public Works Association named the Memorial, Project of the Year in the under $5 million category.

Another topic of discussion was the July 31 storm and the aftermath of the storm.

David Smith said Anthem Community Park lost 176 trees on its own. He said staff is still figuring out what the total losses were for the storm, which dropped upwards of five inches of rain in a little more than an hour and had winds of more than 60 miles per hour.

Smith explained that he and his staff are looking at nurseries around the Valley and said depending on the type of plant replacements will be planted either this fall or next spring.

Former council member Ron Jerich asked how the repairs from the storm will be paid for.

Chief financial officer Doug Greenstein said that while the complete impact of the storm is still being analyzed finances are in place to deal with the cleanup and replacement of plants and other items damaged by the storm.

“Some of the items damaged or destroyed are reserve asset items,” he said. “Those will be replaced by money in the reserve fund. Other items will be covered by the operating fund. Because we have saved money and have done a good job collecting overdue debts, because our staff keeps costs in check we have excess funds available to deal with the tragedy of July 31.

We’re in a good position because of our frugality.”

The next Anthem Community Council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday Sept.

shutout Continued from page 1 Despite heading into the 2012 high school football season with 8 of 11 starters returning on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball the Cactus Shadows Falcons believe they are a very different team from a year ago when they finished 3-7.

Instead, just like 2011, the Falcons were victimized by the big play. The culprit both times was Jaguars senior Isaiah Huston, who has made a habit of coming up with gamebreakers during his first two seasons on the varsity.

In addition to starting at cornerback on defense, being among the Jaguars’ top receiving threats on offense and returning kicks on special teams, Huston’s list of duties now includes being a change of pace option at quarterback.

After scoring on a 5-yard run in the first half, the senior showed off his breakaway speed early in the second half.

On the first play from scrimmage Huston took the handoff from under center, faked an end around to senior running back Stephen Landeros, before going up the middle 77 yards for a touchdown. On only 10 carries on the night Huston tallied 137 yards.

“Coach said the counter would work,” Huston said.

“Once I broke through the line I knew I was going to go the distance.”

In the fourth quarter Huston added a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown to his career highlight reel. Unfortunately for the Falcons their punt coverage wasn’t the only area where they struggled on special teams.

After narrowly getting to the game’s opening kickoff before a Boulder Creek defender could cover it, a punt by the Jaguars later in the first quarter landed short and then rolled untouched before being downed at the Falcons 15. When a run, an incomplete pass and two false start penalties pushed the Falcons inside their own 5-yard line, Boulder Creek’s Josh Gagnon took advantage by sacking Cactus Shadows Bryce Kinsler for a safety on 3rd-and-20. Gagnon, a junior defensive end, tied for team-high honors with eight

tackles on the game, including three for losses.

The next time the Jaguars punted, Jaguars senior Wyatt Morris hit a low liner. Instead of letting a second punt drop short and then roll deep, Falcons senior R.J. Anderson tried to make a running, sliding catch.

When the senior was unable to handle the kick cleanly the Jaguars recovered the ball on the Falcons 22-yard line. On the very next play Boulder Creek made the host Falcons pay for their mistake, as senior Tanner Court found fellow senior Antonio Effinger down the sideline. The wide receiver went high in the air to bring in the pass in the corner of the end zone. Court completed 8 – of -13 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown.

“I thought Tanner played well,” Boulder Creek coach Dan Friedman said. “For the most part they took our fly away, so he took the underneath stuff.

On that play though, he made a real nice throw.”

Despite heading into 2012 with new starters at all five spots on the offensive line the Jaguars rushed for 342 yards on 34 carries, averaging a staggering 10 yards per attempt. Landeros rushed for 93 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown.

Meanwhile, after putting up 14 points in the first half, including an impressive 9-play 79-yard drive to open the game, the Falcons never got anything going in the second half.

The Jaguars run defense made things difficult, yielding only 3.33 yards per carry, with Anderson leading the way with a modest 44 yards on 15 rushing attempts.

With the ground game effectively shut down, Kinsler was put in position to have to try and win the game through the air, as often was the case a season ago. Against a Jaguars secondary with Huston and fellow senior Ryan McKinley leading the way, the task proved challenging.

The Falcons quarterback went 18 – of – 34 for 200 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

“They came out strong and punched us in the mouth on that first drive,” Huston

said. “We had to settle down.

We adjusted well and played much better, especially in the second half.”

Friedman agreed.

“Their second scoring drive we gave them 30 yards of field position with penalties,” the coach said. “We really hurt ourselves. They’ve got a lot of good skilled players. We have respect for them, but we challenged the defense and said if they don’t score in the second half we can’t lose.”

Next up for the Jaguars is their home opener on Friday against perennial power Brophy (0-1). Last year the Jaguars fell 45-33 in a highly competitive game.

“You can’t beat yourself against a team like that. They’re very talented,” Friedman said.

“We’ll have to play well, but I think we’re all looking forward to the challenge.”

The Falcons will look to rebound when they host Pinnacle (1-0), a 34-22 winner over Sandra Day O’Connor.

“I don’t think we need to change anything drastic as far as our strategy, but we have to execute a lot better,” Davis said.

Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Fridays.

movie review Documentary offers rich insight into life of overindulgence MONTE YAZZIE SPECIAL FOR THE FOOTHILLS FOCUS

There is an interesting, if slightly disturbing, answer to a question concerning why timeshare billionaire David Siegel is building a home, largest in America, influenced by the palace of Versailles; the answer given is “because I can”. The comment sums up the ideal that is the basis for the accidental riches to rags documentary from filmmaker Lauren Greenfield.

The super sized American dream that is directly and devastatingly impacted by the reality of a shifting economy. The documentary serves as a lofty metaphor for the mentality that influenced a societies struggle between wants and needs.

David Siegel is sitting on a golden throne at the beginning of the film, his beauty queen wife Jackie at his side. David amassed his fortune through his company Westgate Resorts, a high-end time-share company that sells luxury to buyers who probably can’t afford them in the first place.

David is building a 90,000 square foot home all while expanding his empire with numerous properties around the country, one of which is located on the Las Vegas strip, when the economy crashes. David downsizes his company, then downsizes again, before he knows it the banks are IRS & AZDOR CONFLICTS TAX PLANNING & PREPARATION:

threatening foreclosure and begin to move in on his personal assets.

Jackie Siegel has a different story. She’s a college graduate who worked at IBM but decided to pursue a dream of being a model. Jackie is clueless and naïve most of the time, a woman spoiled by wealth; yet there is still a sense of vulnerability after the extravagances of her life are taken away.

Director Lauren Greenfield does a great job of offering unflinching depth; a difficult task considering the family is experiencing so much change.

This is demonstrated in an unnerving scene at the dinner table for David’s birthday that displays a breaking family dynamic, it’s disheartening.

musings from Jackie and David, whether it’s the realization of how the rest of the world operates or the recognition of how the economy actually works. There are times when pity and empathy are overwhelmingly forced; these are people losing their money but they ultimately understood the risk involved and still manipulated the system.

Greenfield also makes a point to gain perspective from the staff that works for the Siegels; an aspect that offers an insightful contrast. These workers have nothing yet work for people who have everything. They are working for the American dream as well, but in the most simplistic of terms which is working for a better life that isn’t levied by dollar signs. It’s inspiring.

In The Queen of Versailles the examination of the riches to rags mentality seems heavy handed and, at times, undeserving of compassion. Though their “standard of living” offers much to criticize, there is also humanity that lingers within the seams.

These are damaged people who lived by a mentality much of society was guilty of. Though the economic problems with the world changed this family, specifically with them losing the means and elegance associated with disposable riches, they are still victims…though it’s hard to empathize with them in the end.

community events Cookout benefits preservation efforts The 16th annual Cookout at the Ranch offers participants the change to enjoy music, comedy and a buffet from 5:30 – 9 p.m., Sept. 29 at MacDonald’s Ranch in north Scottsdale.

The festivities, which benefit preservation efforts, will include horse-drawn wagon or van ride to the cookout site, a vocalist, comedian T.A. Burrows performing an excerpt from his show “Unforgettable,” with portrayals of Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis and other legends. The Stragglers western band with Geoff Conklin will perform. The evening also will include the release of a rescued great horned owl.

Boulder Creek, Cactus Shadows seek return to postseason play MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR

Sarah Widhalm enters her sixth season as the coach of the Boulder Creek Jaguars with the least experienced squad of her tenure.

At Cactus Shadows High School the Falcons have a roster with eight seniors out of 13 players, however they head into the 2012 season with their third coach in as many season.

For both Widhalm and Michelle Gardiner, the latest Falcons coach, the goal is to lead their respective programs back to the state tournament after both teams suffered through sub .500 seasons a year ago.

BOULDER CREEK

The Jaguars return five players from a season ago. Of that crew the team will look to senior middle Amanda Haagen to be one of the team’s leaders.

“It’s a young team so I kind of like the opportunity to help teach them what I know,” she said. “Part of my job is to be positive and bring people up.

We have good communication.

Even between the older girls and the younger we don’t really have the clicks.”

On a squad of 11, the group has four seniors, four juniors, a sophomore and two freshman.

“It’s going to be an exciting season, because we have a lot of unknowns,” Widhalm said.

“There are a lot of possibilities and we just have to see who steps up. Of the 32 players in our program we have 17 freshman.”

With that kind of youth Widhalm said the example set

by Haagen is very important.

“Actually both of our captains I’m looking to help stabilize us on the court,” the coach said. “We need them to provide consistent play. ” As much as Haagen is expected to be a vocal leader Widhalm said her 5-foot-9 senior sets an example with her actions on the court.

“She’s a magnet to the ball.

She’s very aggressive, which is how she offsets being under sized for her position,” the coach said. “She’s not intimidated to go after bigger players.”

Co-captain Junior Sierra Ruiz, a junior outside hitter, will be counted on to be one

of the team’s top offensive weapons. She too plays bigger than her 5’6” stature suggests.

“Yeah, I do plyometrics to improve my vertical,” she said.

“We’re not a big team, but we play smart. You have to use your peripheral vision and then just listen to your teammates so you aren’t up there just swinging wildly.”

Running the offense will be sophomore setter Jenna Tunnell.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve been pretty lucky in that I’ve always had an experienced setter,” she said. “Now I’m spending a lot of time talking to her about what she’s seeing out there on the court, why she went to a certain player, just evaluating the thought process that goes into the decision making.”

Defensively the Jaguars are looking to juniors Breanna Heaney and Kate McCulley to keep plays alive in the back row.

“I think we’re pretty balanced in our skill level between offense and defense,” Widhalm said. “I want to know how they respond to adversity. They’ll be pushed. Can we rise up to the challenge? I want our team to look at challenges as our friend that will help us get better.”

CACTUS SHADOWS

The Falcons new coach brings an impressive resume to Cactus Shadows despite not having coached at the high school level in 22 years.

Following a playing career which saw Gardiner compete at Cal Poly before playing professionally both in Switzerland and then on the pro beach tour as well as a brief time on the U.S. National team, she spent 15 years coaching at the college level. For the last seven years she has offered semi-private lessons to fledgling volleyball players ranging in age from 7 to 55.

“It was mostly kids, but I love teaching regardless of the age,” she said. “While I enjoy seeing improvement in players I am a competitor so I absolutely have missed the feeling of winning.”

In returning to the prep ranks Gardiner has an expectation for what kind of team she’ll have.

“People that come to watch us should see a loud, intense,

aggressive style of volleyball,” she said. “I’ve always had strong defensive teams. We will be extremely scrappy. Girls will be diving for balls and playing with a never say die attitude.”

Senior middle blocker Carly Lenzen is the most tenured member of the program as she gets ready for her fourth varsity season under her third different coach. Despite the lack of stability she said she’s excited about the prospects for her team, with eight seniors on the roster.

“I think we’ve already grown a lot,” she said. “It was kind of hard to have the switch, but I think we’re going to be really good. I just want to be the calming influence on the team.

I’ve been here forever so I feel like I can tell the girls about a lot of different situation that I’ve seen and can calm them down. In some ways I feel like the team mom.”

And her coach thinks she’ll make an impression with her play on the court.

“She is coming into her own,” Gardiner said. “From what I’ve been told she has always been a solid blocker, but I think in the past she was hesitant as a hitter.

Right now she is putting dents in the floor.”

“We’re a versatile bunch,” she said. “We have some new players that can do a lot of different things on the court and then we spent a lot of time in the weight room so we’re a lot stronger and have better verticals than we used to. also think we’ll be able to avoid

as many injuries because of our training.”

While Lenzen has seen it all during her tenure at Cactus Shadows the program is brand new to senior Madi Horn who is expected to see time both as an outside hitter as well as a setter.

“She’s good at everything,” Gardiner said. “I could really

She’s a baller. Not only that, but she has a great personality.

She’s a hard worker. The girls really like her.”

Despite transferring from Coronado High School the 5’8” senior made enough of an impression on her teammates to be named a team captain.

“I didn’t really know anything about the program, but I’m excited,” she said.

After coming from a school in which she said there simply weren’t a lot of experienced volleyball players Horn said she’s been thrilled with the talent level of her teammates.

“Our goal is to win state,” she said. “I’m sure a lot of teams have that goal, but with the way these girls work I believe it’s going to happen for us. We’re a strong defensive team and then on offense we have a bunch of smart hitters.”

Horn’s versatility as an athlete was put on display at Coronado where she also performed on the basketball team as well as the tennis team in addition

to volleyball.

Depending on whether or not she receives any college scholarship opportunities to play volleyball she said she might play basketball and tennis at Cactus Shadows.

Horn though said her primary hope is to play well enough to earn a college scholarship.

In that regard she said she and her teammates feel like they’re at an advantage playing for Gardiner.

“With her college background you really try and learn as much as you can,” she said. “It’s cool thinking that the drills we’re doing she has done with her older girl. It gives you a lot of confidence that we’re doing some advanced things.”

While Lenzen figures to provide an imposing force in the middle junior Katie Hanrahan is expected to be an offensive weapon on the outside. The 5’7” outside hitter starts her second year on the varsity looking to be an uplifting player for her teammates.

“I have a positive attitude so I try and keep people motivated,”

she said. “I think overall we’ve got strong communication on this team.”

Having started with open gyms back in May Gardiner said she is excited to see her team in action as they open the season with back-to-back home games tonight against Shadow Mountain and Thursday against North Canyon.

“I think we have the potential to be a good ball control team,” she said. “I want to see how we handle other teams serving at us. You want to see what your team’s nerves are like.

I’ve seen both good and bad in that regard.”

The coach said in addition to the excitement of competing she has been reminded of one of the thrills of coaching at the prep level.

“The best part about coaching at the high school level is knowing the type of impact you can make on your players lives,” she said. “Some will give you their whole heart and trust. You want to do your best to help them grow both as a player, but also as a person.”

Amongst the rest of her roster the coach said she is optimistic about the type of contributions offered by the likes of seniors Jennifer Long, Abby Slack, Miranda Walker and sophomore Mary Swackhamer in addition to Horn, Lenzen and Hanrahan.

“The girls seem really happy,” she said. “I’m really excited about the way they’ve come together as a team.

The chemistry is melding and in motion. We want to peak at the right time, just before the state playoffs.”

ACTING Musical Theater of Anthem starts kids early Musical Theatre of Anthem will offer MTA Minis, a series of performance classes for ages 3-5 beginning in September.

Crime victims need to understand process for restitution One of the most important things crime victims should understand is their right to restitution. In short, if a criminal damages y o u r property (or causes you to s u f f e r medical WILLIAMS bi l l s), then you should not need to file a lawsuit seeking reimbursement.

Those issues should be resolved at the end of the defendant’s criminal case.

For most criminal offenses, judges are required to order convicted criminals to pay money to victims to compensate them for economic losses they have suffered. This is different than a fine because the purpose

of restitution is not to punish the criminal. Instead, its purpose is to attempt to return the victim to the situation they would have been in prior to the commission of the crime.

So how much money does the victim actually receive? The actual amount of restitution is often agreed to as part of a plea agreement. If not, then a restitution hearing could be held so that a judge can consider evidence and determine the amount. This hearing is very different than a trial and has very relaxed rules of evidence.

One important misconception about restitution is that the amount the victim receives is based on the criminal’s ability to pay it. By law, the judge has to fix the amount of restitution based only upon what will fairly compensate the victim. The criminal’s ability to pay it is a

A person who suffers property damage in a DUI collision is a victim under Arizona law.

In 1995, the Arizona Court of Appeals overruled a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge on this very issue. She had ruled that the owner of a car hit by a drunk driver was not a crime victim because he was not in the car at the time of the collision.

Do it yourself hoof trims - Are they better left to the professionals?

Recently, a beautiful, adoptable horse named Lady joined our herd.

Unfortunately, her feet are in dire need of some TLC. In an attempt to save money, Lady’s previous owner had performed a “do it yourself, at home” hoof trim. Needless to say, it did not turn out well. Poor Lady needs to wear special shoes for the next six months to help correct the problem. This begs the question, should you trim your horse’s hoofs or leave the job to a professional?

We live in an era where pretty much anything can be researched and learned from the Internet. Want to tile your house? Google it. Want to diagnose that pain in your leg?

Google it. Want to trim your horse’s hoofs? Google it. Of course some things should

never be done yourself but we are a “do it yourself” society.

I’m not saying a person should never trim their horse’s hoofs.

I’m saying make sure you know what you’re doing prior to beginning. Experimenting and hoping for the best should not be an option especially when a botched result can lead to serious consequences, not to mention pain and discomfort for your horse.

Several years ago, I would regularly go to the nail salon for acrylic nails. After attentively watching the nail tech work her magic, (something she went to school for) and some Internet research, I decided, “this is easy.” I could save money, save a trip to the salon and have beautiful nails by doing the task myself. It was a win-win situation. So, after trekking

off to the beauty supply store and purchasing the necessary supplies, I set to the task of applying my own acrylic nails.

Several hours later I was finally finished. Yikes! I had glue all over my hands, and my long, uneven fingernails made me look like a long-lost relative of Edward Scissorhands.

Basically, it wasn’t pretty.

So, before you attempt a “home job” hoof trim, do your due diligence. Consult the professionals as well as other horse owners who have successfully mastered the process. Your knowledge will result in a happy and healthy horse with perfect hoofs.
