12th annual run, walk raises funds for cancer research MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR
Several hundred people are expected to turn out on Sept. 28 at Anthem Country Club for an event raising funds for Team W.I.S.H. Arizona’s 12th annual 5k Walk/Run. Team W.I.S.H., which has raised more than $1 million in the name of breast cancer research, renamed the Anthem event Linda’s W.I.S.H. last year in honor of Linda Kacmarsky, who lost her fight with cancer on Dec. 20, 2010. The Anthem resident was one of four people who started the team in 2004, The group now
numbers nearly 350 members. Check in for the event is from 7 – 7:45 a.m. with the event beginning at 8 a.m. Runners will go first, followed by walkers and then families interested in participating bringing up the rear. Cost to participate is $20 for adults, $10 for children 11-18 while 10 and under can participate for free. Last year’s event drew a record crowd, in excess of 700 people. “We have all sorts of youth

To kick off a new season in their brand new building Musical Theatre of Anthem founder and Producing Artistic Director Jackie Hammond knew she needed to come up with a big show. After spending MTAs first four years performing strictly musicals Hammond decided to go with a play, tabbing Our Town to be the first performance in the new building with shows set for Sept. 20 – 23. “We haven’t done a straight play yet, but I thought our actors were ready to take on something great like this,” she said. “I figured why not come out with a bang.” Laura O’Meara will direct what playwright Edward Albee once deemed, “the greatest

American play ever written.” The story, narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, follows the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually die. “We have a lot of great actors that haven’t gotten to showcase their talents because they’re not confident as singers,” Hammond said. “We’ve got some of the same kids that have performed in our previous productions, but we also have a handful of new ones too.” One of the show’s leads is Kaylie Stone, a 15-year-old sophomore at Boulder Creek High School. Stone, who won an ariZoni Theatre Award last season
Perhaps absence makes the heart grow fonder. After listening to six candidates offer three minute presentations as to why they should fill the vacated seat on the Carefree Town Council four of six council members voted to elect John Crane as the person to serve the remainder of Jim Van Allen’s term on the Carefree Town Council. “Thanks for placing trust in me,” Crane said over the phone following the vote. “I appreciate the opportunity.” Crane, the one candidate who wasn’t present at the Sept. 4 council meeting, but made his case via speaker phone, earned the nod over Heather Burgett and John Blair, who got a vote from councilman Glenn Miller and Vice Mayor Melissa Price respectively. Others who volunteered for the position, submitting letters of interest before making their case in front of the council, included Robert Gerhardt, Michael J. Krahe and Les Peterson. Crane will serve through
