CSHS awarded Confucius Classroom designation E l i z a b eth M edo r a
CAVE CREEK – Cactus Shadows High School is expanding their World Language Mandarin Chinese offerings with the Confucius Classroom designation. Both Cactus Shadows and Sonoran Trails Middle School were endowed with this designation at a ceremony on Sept. 25. Confucius Classrooms exist all over the world (approximately 70 in the United States), based in classrooms of schools dedicated to excellence in teaching Mandarin Chinese. “We’re excited for what this partnership we’re entering into will bring to our school and community,” said CSHS principal Steve Bebee, speaking at the ceremony. Dr. Joe Cutter, ASU Confucius Institute and Dr. Wei Hen Chen, Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China were guests of honor at the ceremony at Cactus Shadows.

Electrical pole replacement caused I-17 delays
NEW RIVER – A damaged electrical pole was replaced on Wednesday, Sept. 24, causing brief freeway closures and delays. According to APS, a crewmember saw the damaged pole as he was driving on the freeway on Sept. 23. After inspection, it was determined the pole needed to be replaced. Due to its location – the pole holds an electrical wire that runs across the freeway – the replacement was highly prioritized. The damaged wooden pole was rotted at the bottom. It has now been replaced with a metal pole. APS and the Arizona Department of Transportation worked together to minimize the traffic impact of the work. The I-17 was closed in that area for 15-minute intervals over the course of an hour. The northbound on-ramp was also closed. Crews were able to T h e N e w R i v e r / I - 1 7 n o r t h b o u n d o n - r a m p w a s c l o s e d b r i e f l y o n S e p t . 2 4 d u e t o r e p l a c e m e n t w o r k o n a complete the work ahead of schedule and reopened the freenearby electrical pole. way before noon on Sept. 24.
