DMFD seeking bond to help fund station repairs, new tankers ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
NORTH VALLEY – The Daisy Mountain Fire Department is asking voters to approve a bond that will help fund needed station repairs, station security upgrades, and new water tankers. The bond question will be on fire district residents’ Nov. 3 ballot. Daisy Mountain Fire services unincorporated local areas, including New River, Anthem east of the I-17, and Desert Hills. This is the first time DMFD has asked fire district voters to approve a bond. The bond, which is a loan to the fire district, will provide about $16 million in bond funds to DMFD. If passed, the bond will be about 24 cents

per $100 of secondary assessed valuation, or $24 per year on a home assessed at $100,000, per
DMFD’s bond information. For a $250,000 home, it would be approximately $5 per month. Daisy Mountain Fire Deputy Chief Danny Johnson noted that the fire district needs to fund several projects, but the economy’s downturn disrupted the DMFD capital plan, leaving difficulties in funding maintenance and new infrastructure. “We had some public meetings like we have every year, and one of the questions that we got from our citizens was what is our long-term capital plan,” Johnson said. “We needed to figure out how we were going to

Feeding the hungry: Foothills Empty Bowls event to be held Oct. 16 ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
CAREFREE – Last year, one in five Arizonans went through days when they didn’t know if they could afford to buy food, according to the Food Research and Action Center’s April 2015 report. These families who are struggling to put food on the table include local residents. In the north valley, the Foothills Food Bank is a primary resource for struggling families, both for emergency food supplies and ongoing assistance. “We are serving over 450 clients/families per month,” said Foothills Food Bank Executive Director Pam DiPietro.
Pictured are some of the bowls that will be offered at this year’s Foothills Empty Bowls event in Carefree. Empty Bowls will run 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.
Putting an end to hunger is at the forefront of Empty Bowls, a grassroots project now in its 25th year. Locally, the Foothills Empty Bowls is happening Friday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Carefree Town Center. Empty Bowls is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Foothills Food Bank, raising an average of $18,000 each year. Foothills Empty Bowls guests choose unique bowls handmade by Sonoran Arts League artisans. A $15 donation is asked for each bowl; the price includes a pasta lunch catered by Harold’s Corral and served in the specialty bowls. Sonoran Arts League Empty

fund these projects over the next 10 years or so.” Per Arizona law, DMFD has identified uses for bond funds in the ballot proposition and must use the funds for the allocated purposes. The bond can only be used for capital improvements, including equipment, station work, and trucks. Funds cannot be used for employee benefits or salaries. Also per law, fire district employees cannot advocate for the passage of the bond during work time, but they can provide information on the projects the bond will fund. Volunteers will be walking through fire district neighborhoods on upcoming weekends to provide more information on bond funding and projects. Bond proceeds will fund new construction on the current Desert Hills station grounds. Station #145, which was built about 15 years ago on Desert Hills Drive, has developed serious structural problems due to the heaving and settling of the area’s expansive soil. “The middle of the station is over two inches lower than the stem wall on the outside,” Johnson described, adding that this has caused plumbing leaks and substantial cracks in the
walls. The station’s septic system has separated from the leach field, and the septic system no longer works properly, causing sewer backups every 5-6 months. “The Fire Board had us do a feasibility study on the health of that building,” Johnson continued. After engineers studied the site and took samples from under the foundation, it was determined that it would be better long-term to replace the building than to try to repair the structural damage. The building is not currently covered under warranty. “When it was all said and done, it was going to be about as much to fix it as it was going to be to build something new,” Johnson said. A new station is planned for the same location. A new community room will be added, as well as administration offices. The community room at Station #141 is generally booked, and DMFD is looking to expand the community rooms available so that more residents can use the meeting spaces. Bond funding will also be used for infrastructure updates on radio towers near Stations #141 and #146. “Working at 141, I’m very familiar with the lack of communication up there,” said Jon Binsbacher, firefighter/

The Foothills Focus paramedic/engineer at Station #141 in New River. “We have some dead spots up there, so we’re looking to improve the technology up there to take away some of those dead spots.” Binsbacher is volunteering his time as an advocate for the bond because he feels it is vital for the community. New water tankers are high on the priority list for Daisy Mountain Fire. DMFD reports that larger tankers will hasten response time and improve the chances of a quick stop to a fire. The district plans to add three
Daisy Mountain Fire Department expected bond projects, per DMFD bond information sheet: • Constructing and renovating department facilities • Technology and radio equipment update • Improvements to buildings for firefighter/ public safety • Safety and security of district assets • Increase our level of response • Replace some of the current fleet with larger water tankers to serve our area
TheFoothillsFocus.com water tankers that will carry 3,000 gallons each, double the capacity of the trucks DMFD currently owns. “We can have more water on scene in the initial attack, as well as we don’t have to shuttle water as much,” Johnson. “The need for tankers is incredible.” The majority of the DMFD district relies on tanker trucks to fight fires; most of the area doesn’t have fire hydrants. “I’ve witnessed it firsthand, where we’re shuttling water to and from up there,” Binsbacher said. “It could definitely make a big difference on that initial stop on a structure fire or a brush fire.” The planned building improvements include station remodels that will help block exhaust from the fire trucks. Right now, exhaust is getting pushed into the fire stations, creating a hazard for firefighters and residents who use the community room at stations. New security measures also need to be funded. Fire department resources need further security. Among other issues, items have gone missing from firefighters’ cars when they are parked at the station, indicating thieves may be taking advantage of firefighters’ absence when they’re out on calls.

If the bond doesn’t pass, Johnson said DMFD will have to reevaluate. “If things don’t pass, we’re going to have to figure out where we can make cuts,” Johnson said. “We’re going to have to look at what services we’re going to have to put on the shelf for a while, what projects we’re not going to be able to fund, what equipment we can nickel and dime for a few years to keep it together.” Without bond funding, DMFD will be looking at prioritizing the current needs and planning to complete projects over the next 30 years or cutting projects entirely. “In order for us to operate safely and efficiently, we need this bond to pass or else it’s going to take us 30 years to do what we need to do,” Binsbacher said. ADEQ lifts consumption advisory on Gila River fish NORTH VALLEY – The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has announced that it has lifted the consumption advisory for fish caught in the Gila River and its tributaries within and downstream of the Phoenix metropolitan area – this includes 100 miles of streams and 286 acres of lakes. According to ADEQ, fish caught from these waters are no longer unsafe to eat due to banned pesticides (DDT, chlordane, or toxaphene). Lifting this advisory, which has been in place for 24 years, is credited to the cessation of the use of the pesticides in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Detailed information about the delisting of the Gila River and its tributaries can be found at www.azdeq.gov/environ/ water/assessment/download/ delisting_hassayampa.pdf. ADEQ and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tested 67 fish tissue samples from eight different fish species in the Gila River and several of its tributaries west of Phoenix during 2011 and 2012. Fish tissue data demonstrated banned pesticide levels (DDT, toxaphene, and chlordane) dropped from more than 160 times higher than threshold levels designed to protect human health in the 1990s, to 16 times lower than these thresholds in 2011 and 2012.

Forest Service conducting visitor surveys NORTH VALLEY – Starting this month, Forest Service contractors will be conducting surveys on behalf of the Tonto National Forest in developed and dispersed recreation sites
within the Forest. This provides visitors an opportunity to let the Forest Service know about their experiences on Forest Service lands. The contractors will ask about visits to the Tonto National Forest. Interviewers will be wearing bright orange vests and have a “Traffic Survey Ahead” sign and orange safety cones at interview sites. These surveys will take place on random days and will continue through Sept. 30, 2016, in the Cave Creek, Globe, Mesa, Payson, Pleasant Valley, and Tonto Basin ranger districts. These ongoing surveys have already been conducted twic on every National Forest and National Grassland over the last decade. The information is useful for forest and local community tourism planning. It provides national forest managers with an estimate of how many people recreate on federal lands and what activities they engage in while there. Other important information that is gathered includes how satisfied

people are with their visit, suggestions for improvements, and the economic impact of their recreation visit on the local economy. The information from this nation-wide survey will be used by the Forest Service, Congress, and the General Accounting Office for a variety of issues including forest planning and budget allocation. This recreation survey gathers basic visitor information. All information is confidential, and the survey is voluntary. The questions visitors are asked include where they recreate on the Forest, the focus of their visit, how many people they traveled with, how long were they on the Forest, what other recreation sites they visited while on the Forest, and how satisfied they were with the facilities and services provided. NORTH VALLEY – With a new school year comes change. This school year the Deer Valley Unified School District is dealing with more budget cuts. Back in May, the DVUSD Governing Board voted on an athletic participation fee. Schools have seen varied responses from families over the athletic fee, but many tudents continue to participate in school sports. The athletic fee helps balance the district’s budget. The money from the athletic fee will help pay for that particular sport’s fees and will contribute to the expenses of operating the DVUSD athletic programs. The athletic fee applies to seventhand eighth-grade athletes ($60 per sport) and 9th-12th grade athletes ($100 per sport). The athletic fee has caps that include a $120 maximum per athlete for seventh- and eighth-grade athletes and a $200 maximum per athlete for 9th-12th grade athletes. Other caps include a $300 maximum cap per family/ household. An athletic fee hardship waiver is available to students

who need help paying the fee. The only way a student can qualify for an athletic fee waiver is by submitting an athletic clearance packet. Students playing multiple sports must submit an athletic fee waiver for every new athletic season (fall, winter, spring). According to Jim Migliorino, deputy superintendent of fiscal and business services for DVUSD, it is a little early to tell if the athletic fee has affected students trying out for sports because it is only fall. “We have seen a number of students who have requested the waiver,” Migliorino said. “That is an indication the fee it is not an obstacle for participation.” The athletic fee does not guarantee playing time, and there will be no refunds. If the athletic fee is not paid, the athlete will lose playing time until the athletic fee is paid. According to Migliorino, there have been good and bad reactions to the athletic fee. The positive reactions include the caps for families and athletes, and most students pay more for club sports and other activities. The negative reactions include

students and parents are already paying large amounts of money to participate in other programs and this is just an additional fee. With the new athletic fee, there will be additional responsibilities for athletic directors/coordinators/ secretaries, coaches, parents/ guardians, and bookstore managers to make sure the fees are taken care of. Susan Perreault, athletic secretary at Sandra Day O’Connor High School, says there was a little confusion in the beginning about the athletic fee. “The payment is not processed online so parents/guardians have to come into the school to pay the fee,” Perreault said. “This caused a little confusion because most payments are made through PowerSchool, but they are working on getting an online payment set up.” Each school determines their own procedures for the issuance of the official tax credit receipts. For questions on how to pay the athletic fee, or how to get the athletic fee waiver go to your high school’s Web site or call the athletic offices for more information.

How is your brain functioning these days? If you find yourself forgetting things, dates, and names, you are not alone. If you are searching for misplaced items like keys and papers, join the club. And if you seem to “go blank” every now and then, you are just being “normal.” According to scientists, we have multi-tasked our way into the depths of “scattered brain syndrome.” Which is exactly what I suffer from much of the time! Where did those darn keys go? Why can’t I remember where I put that file? When I see an old client at the store why can’t I remember her name? How
us to be “refreshed and ready” for the morning. Okay. I will sleep more. Oh, and did you know that creativity seems to peak at night? That’s why we may have so many great ideas in the evening. Usually, it’s better to go to bed and sleep for eight hours before we act on those brilliant thoughts. A woman in Anthem emailed me to say that she had the “stroke of genius” one late afternoon to paint her kitchen the colors of a sunset. I guess running out to Home Depot, having a glass of wine and “expressing creativity” all over your kitchen walls is not a very wise thing to do. Had she “slept on it,” she might have come to her senses by morning. This is what the German scientists contend – that most ideas need “sleep time” before we act on them. Imagine walking into your kitchen in the daylight and seeing hues of orange, red and purple. The woman’s husband was so “horrified” when he arrived home from a business
time (correctly and thoroughly) is better than doing five things at once (sloppily). And people who actually accomplish things seem to already know this. Do one thing at time and get results! It seems more than ever, people are becoming easily distracted. This is not due to senility, because it seems to be a universal problem with sometimes frightful consequences. Every day, the airlines report that people leave hundreds of items in the seat pockets and overhead bins of planes. Important items like purses, iPods, and laptops! Parents even forget that their kids are in their cars. One lady in Phoenix left her nine month old son strapped in a shopping cart at Walmart and didn’t notice he was missing till she got home! The average American worker spends six hours a week just looking for things, like retrieving emails or files and reports. What is happening to us? Scientists call it data overload. Chop the wood and carry
Need to make a decision? Sleep on it first. This world-shattering advice has just come from a team of determined German scientists could I forget to get butter at the store when it was the ONLY reason I went to the store in the first place? Dear Readers, does this sound familiar? Need to make a decision? Sleep on it first. This worldshattering advice has just come from a team of determined German scientists. I love these breakthroughs conducted by some serious team of scholars. Heck, they could have saved three years of experiments and a whole lot of money if they had just asked us – we’d have told them that it’s common sense to “sleep on it.” It’s always a hoot to have science validate what we already know. But the science of sleep has gone further to claim that a good night’s sleep “cleanses our brain” and helps organize thoughts, filing information into long-term memory and allows
trip that he thought he had entered the wrong house! Isn’t creativity grand? Oh, back to the brain science. Evidently many of us are suffering from data overload and cannot seem to stay focused. Yes, I know I have a problem with hard boiling eggs because twice I had the eggs in a saucepan, turned on the stove, and walked away never to think about them again. Until the pan is burned and the eggs have exploded all over the place! My husband, Doug, cringes when I say I will cook eggs and if he is home stands guard or tells me to get a fire extinguisher. Remember when everyone had to proudly put on their resume that they could multitask? Now that term is so blasé. Uni-tasking has made a comeback because research proves that doing one thing at
water! These tasks take concentration. Sort of like peeling potatoes. Pay attention or bleed to death. Some tasks require we “give it our all.” And when doing these tasks, our mind is free to focus and it actually makes us intellectually “sharper” than if we tried juggling several things at once. Having a creative moment? That’s great…just stay away from a paint can (unless you have a canvas) until you’ve had time to get a good night’s rest. Try doing one thing at a time. Educational campaigns held in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month NORTH VALLEY – The city of Phoenix and Maricopa County are working to raise awareness of domestic violence and provide resources for how to deal with it. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The city of Phoenix’s domestic violence awareness campaign, “Paint Phoenix Purple,” has made significant strides since beginning in 2013 by educating and providing resources to thousands of people. The premise of “Paint Phoenix Purple” continues to be that by educating people, domestic violence can be reduced and eventually eliminated in the community. In 2013, the city created a Roadmap to Excellence plan to make Phoenix a national leader in ending domestic violence and serving its victims. So far, hundreds of victims have been helped, hundreds of others have been made aware of signs of abuse and resources available, and other cities in Arizona have joined the campaign, in addition to Maricopa County and the state of Arizona. Maricopa County is lighting the county administration building purple at sunset every night in October to bring awareness of the campaign against domestic violence. The county sent out a release stating that they are reaching out to over 13,000 employees and asking them to do their part in bringing attention to the problem of domestic violence in the month of October. District 5 Supervisor Steve Gallardo will be holding informational events every Friday this month. “We want the public to see our commitment and generate a community conversation about this issue,” th release stated. Residents can show their support for the third annual campaign with displays of purple. Homeowners can install a purple light bulb on their porch; join employees and wear purple throughout the month, especially on Oct. 15, which has been designated as the statewide day to raise awareness; use the hashtag #AZWearPurpleDay on social media; tie a purple ribbon on car antennas; and more. “These creative and colorful displays are a reminder to the community that one in four women and one in seven men has been a victim of domestic violence. It impacts all of us,” said Mayor Greg Stanton. “Painting Phoenix Purple also demonstrates our commitment to
becoming a national leader in preventing and ending domestic violence.”
Some of Phoenix’s accomplishments are: • Creation of a centralized intake system – As a result, last fiscal year 11,777 calls were received with 1,420 screened for emergency shelter. Additionally, 332 people were placed in permanent housing by a city housing specialist. • Created a Domestic Violence Resource Manual for Employers to ensure that any employer in the nation has information about domestic violence and appropriate workplace response. • Participated in several youth town halls about domestic violence prevention, resulting in the education of more than 375 students. • Engaged more than 12,000 students through resource fairs and art and dance contests. • Provided “In Their Shoes” training to more than 1,600 students in the Phoenix Union High School District. This exercise allows participants to experience issues victims face. • Influenced other municipalities and governments, including Maricopa County to “Color the County Purple” and the state of Arizona to “Light Arizona Purple.” Together, the community can raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on families. For more information about the Paint Phoenix Purple campaign, visit paintphoenixpurple.org. If you or someone you know is in need of victim services, call the city’s Family Advocacy Center at (602) 534-2120 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1(800) 799-7233.

Drama teacher at Cactus Shadows changes lives, one student at a time KATLYN EWENS STAFF
SCOTTSDALE – His classroom is the one without the desks. His students are some of the boldest teenagers on campus, seldom afraid to express themselves. Andrew Cupo is a former Cactus Shadows High School Falcon who returned to the nest eight years ago as the drama teacher. He empowers, inspires, and encourages creative bravery among his students. Cupo teaches drama classes, oversees the Jokers Improve Troupe, and the CSHS Drama Club, all while putting on two full-scale productions a year. Regarding the typical stereotypes between athletes and drama students, he said that that those stigmas aren’t true in today’s high schools, at least not at Cactus Shadows. Cupo said he’s had many athletes in drama club over the years; some even choose the stage over the practice field. “It just depends,” he said. “I’ve had swimmers, track stars, even football players, that act, help out during productions, or build sets.” Drama can often provide athletes with a creative outlet not necessarily offered in their sport. Conversely, many actors take on sports as another way to support their school and stay healthy. Junior Kameron Moore is a member of the swim team, plans to compete on the track

team this season, and is an active participant in the drama program at Cactus Shadows. Moore said that being in drama has prompted him to be more creative and “drama strengthens you creatively, while athletics and swim strengthen you physically.” Moore was an athlete first, who took Cupo’s drama class simply as a fine arts credit. He’s now a member of the Improv Troupe, active in CSHS Drama Club, and just scored the lead role in ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’, the school’s fall production. “If it weren’t for Cupo, I wouldn’t be doing drama,” Moore said. “I really look up to him.” While it’s interesting that some athletes are involved in drama, it is also clear that the majority of thespians are not athletes. Fine arts is their
passion and their teacher, Cupo, spends countless hours helping students find a place to fit into the department. Alexa Dragone, junior cocaptain of the Improv Troupe, became involved with drama through her sisters, who were all former students of Cupo’s. “My favorite part about Cupo is that he’s not afraid to be Cupo,” Dragone said. Cupo has a way of connecting with students that brings out their individual contributions. He allows them to shine in their own way. Dragone said that if she wasn’t in drama club, her high school experience would have been very difference. She is definitely more outgoing and feels free to express herself in many different aspects. There have definitely been struggles for the CSHS drama department, when it comes to freedom of speech and expression. Not all parents and students agree with every play. But, Cupo makes sure that his drama students are well educated by teaching them about numerous plays. Cupo continues to change students’ lives through the arts and said he plans to for a long time. “To see students so passionate about something and to see them express themselves,” Cupo said. “As a theatre teacher, that’s the best gift ever.”

Posey: The Little Pibble That Can ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
NORTH VALLEY – Good things come in small packages. Posey the “pibble” (affectionate term for a pit bull) is a pit bull that has congenital dwarfism. But Posey’s physical limitations don’t stop her. A certified therapy dog, Posey shares her happy outlook with those who need her comforting puppy love the most. Posey’s owner, veterinarian Christina Grant, noted that Posey loves everyone. Her affectionate disposition makes her an ideal therapy dog. Posey’s disability helps kids with special needs relate to her and empathize with her. “She doesn’t let it stop her,” Grant said, referring to Posey’s dwarfism. In many ways, oneyear-old Posey is just an average “pibble.” She loves treats, hugs, car rides, and all kinds of adventures. She even has her own Facebook page, Posey The Poseinator, The Pibble That CAN, so her fans can keep up with her: www.facebook.com/ PoseythePoseinator. Since Posey can’t walk long distances, she sometimes rides in a cart; other times, Grant carries her. Posey has developed her
own ways of communicating what she wants since she can’t run to the door or jump up. Posey and Grant are one of the Gabriel’s Angels pet therapy teams. Gabriel’s Angels’ teams visit Phoenix-area facilities that aid abused and at-risk kids. As a therapy dog, Posey “reads” with the kids, cuddles with them, and helps them learn empathy, respect, and trust. Grant noted that the kids who Posey visits are not able to be in a regular classroom setting. “She goes and she hangs out with them twice a month,” Grant said. She noted that it helps the kids learn to share, as they have to share Posey’s attention and take turns sitting next to her. As a veterinarian, Grant provides the kids with unique learning opportunities. “Last week, we taught them about the heart,” Grant said. “I took a stethoscope, and we all listened to Posey.” Posey has been through extensive training and testing to work as a certified therapy dog. In addition to her work through Gabriel’s Angels, Posey has worked at assisted living facilities. Grant plans to start doing hospice work with Posey, as well. Posey will even be going
Pictured above left: Posey practices her “I want a treat” look. Above: Posey’s friends read to her during her therapy dog visit to their school. Pictured left: Posey at physical therapy.
to the Arizona Special Olympics on Oct. 17. Posey will be featured in the 2016 For The Love of Pit Bulls Dog Park Publishing calendar. Proceeds from the calendar will go to animal rescues. See www. dogparkpublishing.com for more details. Posey’s story started sadly. At two months old, she was a small, sickly puppy sitting in a county shelter waiting to be rescued. “She was found as a stray,” Grant said. “Someone must have dumped her since there was no way she could have run away.”
Posey was in very poor physical condition and was severely malnourished when she was found. She was on the euthanasia list at the county shelter when she taken in by Mayday Pit Bull Rescue & Advocacy. Mayday immediately brought her into VetMed, the emergency and specialty veterinary hospital where Grant works. After testing and treatment, it was determined that Posey had dwarfism, likely caused by excessive inbreeding. After spending time with Posey, Grant decided to foster her. “Something drew me to her,

and I just fell in love with her,” Grant said. Grant ended up adopting Posey, who fit so well into her new family that it made sense to keep her there. As a veterinarian, Grant can provide the extensive care Posey needs. Grant has Posey in physical therapy with a canine rehab specialist vet, and she provides supplements and medications to keep Posey as healthy and comfortable as possible. Sadly, Posey isn’t likely to have a long life. As she gets older, the dwarfism will become painful, and her quality of life will lessen. Until that time, Posey will continue to be treasured by her family and friends. It’s clear that Posey greatly enjoys her therapy work. Everywhere she goes, she makes friends. Grant noted that Posey helps change the stereotype that all pit bulls are mean or scary. Gentle, small, and nonthreatening, Posey works as an “ambassador of the breed,” easing the fears of those who are afraid of pit bulls. Grant noted that she always wanted to do this kind of volunteer work. “I always wanted to have a therapy dog,” Grant said. She kept waiting for the right time and the right dog. Posey turned out to be that right dog. “She’s very well-behaved – she loves people, she loves kids,” Grant added. Posey loves everyone – and everyone who meets her loves her in return.

The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden will open for the first time on Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. Visitors to Empty Bowls can visit the opento-the-public pumpkin garden, which will adjoin the Empty Bowls event. More than 50
incredible pumpkin works of art will be on display. For those who can’t make the Empty Bowls event but would still like to support the Foothills Food Bank, the food bank is in need of monetary and food donations. “Right now we can use monetary donations to purchase the items that we keep running out of, such as tuna, pasta sauce, mac and cheese, corn, green beans, and lunch soups,” DiPietro said. Perry noted that these special bowls aren’t just for decoration or for food use. “It’s in your house to remind you that there are empty bowls every day throughout the world,” Perry said. beautiful, handmade works of art with a meaningful story behind them. The bowls make ideal gifts and keepsakes and are also suited for everyday use; many of the bowls are microwave-safe, and all of them are food-safe and leak-proof. Each bowl is unique and represents the goal of Empty Bowls: making sure no one goes hungry.
EMPTY BOWLS Sonoran Arts League, local artists donate their time and skills, creating thousands of bowls to sell. Keeping up with the demand for bowls takes many hands and many hours of work. “In the first year of Empty Bowls, we ran out of bowls in 45 minutes!” Perry said. After seeing how popular the event was, Perry worked to bring in more artists. She noted that this year, in addition to wellknown artists, there are many new artists sharing their crafts, all with the goal of benefiting the food bank. “We have a number of artists who are very determined to make sure this event raises as much as it possibly can,” Perry said. She emphasized that for many people, it doesn’t take much to be in need of financial help. Medical bills, layoffs, and unexpected expenses can happen to anyone. “A lot of people could find themselves in need at any given time,” Perry said. Along with the proceeds from the sale of the bowls, proceeds from a silent art auction held during the event are also donated to the food bank. Other sponsors of the event include the Town

Local author explores “Legacy of Genetic Tampering” SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST
“Is this the legacy of genetic tampering or a terrorist attack with weaponized rabies? As madness consumes the Valley of the Sun, a group of family and friends will run the gauntlet to escape the city.” Phoenix author Linda Andrews writes in a variety of genres: Romance, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Humor. Her work is riveting and imaginative and much of the time uses historical facts and contemporary issues that are explored in eerily possible scenarios.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland and growing up in Glendale, Arizona, Linda had many examples of creativity around her. Everyone in her family was involved in something artistic, including painting, drawing, collage, and even writing. While growing up, she would draw to tell her stories. At one point, Linda learned her father had actually written a mystery in the style of Dashiell Hammet. The manuscript was found tucked away in the back of a closet; she said she didn’t know if it was ever submitted for publication.
Pictured: Linda Andrews
Some of the fondest memories were the stories her mom and dad wrote for the family to enjoy. So, she decided to try her hand at it and turned her pen from drawing to writing down her thoughts. The art of writing has become a surprising passion, later in life, for Linda. Growing up, she spent hours reading in the genre of mysteries greats as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, MM Kaye, and Elizabeth Peters riveted to the story line, plot twists, and cleverness of their characters. She reflects that after all that reading, she does not write mysteries of her own. Linda moved from short stories to novel writing, as an dult, by dictating a story into a tape recorder. Linda lives in north Phoenix and worked at one time in Casa Grande, so on her hour and a half drives each way she had plenty of time to lay down a
story line. Soon, she joined the Romance Writers of America and began learning the craft of writing. Linda shares that writing is hard work for her, especially with fiction. She is educated as a scientist, and while she understands how to tell a story, the mechanics of storytelling took some work to get it right. Linda chooses writing for much the same reason many of us choose to read: it presents to us a world of possibilities. For Linda, it allows her to share her passions and express thoughts and ideas in a fictional manner. Although she writes in a variety of genres, there is one consistent thing in all her stories: Hope. By holding the lantern of hope, it keeps alive the glimmer of a chance that with courage she and the characters will continually move forward. To date, Linda Andrews has over 44 books to her credit. Her first indie release “Redaction” was a bestseller, and her latest “Hadean: Threshold of Extinction” is on its way. Her books are sold at Dog Eared Pages Books in Phoenix, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Richard Jay Griffin, Sr. The heavens above have gained a new star. After a 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, Richard Jay Griffin, Sr., 76, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 in Carson City, Nevada surrounded by family at home. He passed peacefully with his favorite music in the background as he was read to. Richard was an inspiration to many and had the journey of a lifetime. He was a Veteran and fought for his country, serving in the United States Navy. He is a graduate of Loyola College, where he received academic honors. He believed that if you want something, then you should work for it. Richard worked his way up to Director of Finance at the University of Maryland. Richard was a Past Master of Howard Lodge
#101 in Elkridge, Maryland in 1984, and his favorite place of worship was at Salem Lutheran Evangelical Church in Catonsville, Maryland. He also served as a Firefighter in Maryland. He lived in Cave Creek with his family for many years.
Richard’s Alzheimer’s only allowed him to discover new things, like a passion for dogs as pets, eating chicken and red meat, and became more expressive with his emotions.
Richard smiled at the sight of everything: little children playing with his walker, laughing as the kittens ran across his lap playing, or smiling just because he was alive. Richard was a devoted husband to Dolleen and a loving father to Adrienne and Jay. His son, Jay preceded him in death. Richard was a proud and adoring grandfather to Jennifer, Phil, Mike, and Brendon. Richard’s greatgrandchildren were his favorite blessings; Kayla, Emmalyn, Christian, Damyyon, Madalyn, and Olivia. Richard was an admirable man who only wanted the best for everyone. He will be forever missed and will always be the brightest star sparkling in the sky.

OdySea Aquarium unveils new 60 ft. walls
SCOTTSDALE – Scottsdale’s OdySea Aquarium, which is slated to be the largest aquarium in the southwest, has marked a construction milestone with the raising of the building’s 60 ft. walls. Construction is progressing quickly to meet the grand opening, planned for July 2016. McCarthy Building Companies began construction in March of this year, and in September, a total of 68 walls were hoisted up — with heights ranging from 51’-10” to 60-10” for the main building, and a total of 1,275 feet in diameter. The weight of the panels ranged from 151,000 lbs. to 224,500 lbs. and required a 300-ton/150foot-tall crane to erect them. Additional construction development includes cast placements for the concrete tanks that will be combined with 5,455 square feet for over 2,000 acrylic viewing window panels that will provide visitors with insight into 50 exhibits. Each individual 44-foot-tall window will require a 200-ton crane to hoist and gently place them into the concrete tanks. This month will also begin the installation of the Life Support Systems that includes more 300 pumps and more than 42,000 lineal feet of piping to construct the revolutionary design of this impressive facility. “Building the OdySea Aquarium goes far beyond any standard aquarium. From the story behind the innovative design, to the erecting of the enormous walls and plans for sustaining the marine life, the depth of this
project is unimaginable,” said Amram Knishinsky, PhD and principal founder. Poised to be one of Arizona’s premier attractions, OdySea is expected to be an oceanic educational adventure like no other in the industry. The 16acre attraction, designed to accommodate up to 15,000 visitors daily, will be a twolevel facility that will span more than 200,000 square feet and will host marine life tank exhibits throughout. Among the facility’s planned features is the SeaTREK experience that allows guests to descend deep into the “ocean,” where they will be surrounded by sea creatures on all sides. Plans also include a stateof-the-art 3D theater and acrylic underwater walkways for visitors to embark on a journey exploring all areas of marine life — from the bayous and coral reefs to deep abysses of fresh water and salt water. The exhibits will include the Rivers of the World, American Rivers, Amazon Rivers, Shores, Penguins, the Great Barrier Reef, and “the Bizarre & the Beautiful,” including jellyfish, octopus, large king crabs and seahorses. Educational media boards placed throughout the facility will provide hands-on experiences, illuminated world maps, and sounds from different regions all over the globe. The OdySea Aquarium will also include a Lighthouse Café and an OdySea Treasures Gift Shop. Keep updated on the OdySea construction at www. odyseaaquarium.com.
