Inside:

For three straight days bicycles will be the primary mode of transportation in Cave Creek when the 3rd annual Cave Creek Bicycle Festival gets under way on Friday. Cycling enthusiasts can participate in one of two main events, a 22-mile mountain biking race on Saturday or the Bello Fondo Road Ride on Sunday. Entrance to each event is $65. To participate in both events costs $95. Proceeds from the festival go toward Cave Creek’s ongoing effort to buy open space.

“We think this is a great way to showcase the area as a place to not only bike, but also hike,” Cave Creek assistant utilities manager Mike Rigney said. The proceeds from the event go toward Cave Creek’s effort to purchase 4,000 acres of land to preserve as open space. The 22.2-mile mountain bike race starts and ends at Frontier Town and goes through Spur Cross Conservation area onto the Maricopa Trail through Cave Creek Regional Park and the Desert Foothills Land Trust preserve before finishing on some town trails that parallel Cave Creek Road as they come into Frontier Town. Last year, the event was won

by Eric Salstrand, in a time of 1 hour 22 minutes and 9 seconds, to best a field of 147. “This year the trail is a little longer,” Rigney said. “We also have a stretch that goes through a deep sandy wash so we’re expecting the winning time to be slower.” Rigney said the event draws its fair share of professional mountain bikers as well as experienced amateurs. The ride begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Registration begins at 7 and will go through 8:30 a.m. Day of race registration is available.

Music Man sells classic tale in North Scottsdale MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR

Time, age and distance have been cast aside as concerns for those involved in Desert Foothills Theater’s production of “The Music Man,” which debuts for a seven-show run at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. The show has brought the lead actor back to the stage for the first in 20 years. It has an octogenarian, in the choir, reminiscing about his theater days back in high school and has its director making the commute from Chandler while one of its lead actors drives to North Scottsdale from Glendale. “I would say 95 percent of these actors I’ve never had a chance to work with,” director

HISTORY:

Scott Withers of Chandler said. “I think some of these actors are going to go places that they’ve never gone before and reach a new level.” Withers, who will be a part of “The Music Man” for the third time in his life and the second time as a director, is excited to add a new wrinkle to the classic tale of traveling salesman Harold Hill, who enters the mundane lives of the people of River City. Although Hill’s plan is to scam the town’s people into investing in musical instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band and then skip town his plans change when he ends up falling for Marian, the town’s librarian.
