Christmas comes early for New River family MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR

New River resident Heather Turner, left, and her son Carson got the keys for her Habitat for Humanity home in New River on Dec. 22. The home was furnished by Kurt and Brenda Warner’s foundation.
Some Valley residents think fondly of Kurt Warner because of his five season stint from 2005-2009 as the Arizona Cardinals quarterback, a run highlighted by the team’s first trip to the Super Bowl in 2008. Others enjoyed his dancing ability during his run on Dancing with the Stars. For new New River resident Heather Turner and her son Carson, Warner’s impact is much more personal. On Dec. 22 Warner was in New River with his wife Brenda as part of the First Things First Foundation that the couple started. In May Turner, a single mom, raising Carson, who has cerebral palsy, was selected by
Habitat for Humanity Desert Foothills to be the recipient of a new home. “I can close my eyes and see Carson running, digging, swinging and exploring our new home, and it makes me feel like the proudest mom ever,” said Turner about her new home located on more than an acre of land off of 27th Ave and New River Road. Potential homeowners must have a need for simple, decent, affordable housing. Their current living space may be too small for their family, or they are paying more than they can afford. The applicant must have the ability to pay for housing, as well as other expenses by showing at least two years of consistent income. The selected applicant
then works in partnership with HFHDF to build and buy his or her own home. Part of the arrangement includes the recipient providing 400 hours of ‘sweat equity’ for a dual parent household, or 200 hours for a single parent family. While Turner thought she was simply on hand for a ceremony to get the keys just days before Christmas she was in for a surprise. After a ceremony outside, which include some words from the Warners as well as Habitat for Humanity Desert Foothills executive director Todd Rogers, it was time for a ribbon cutting ceremony and then to head inside the house. One of the programs within First Things First New River habitat house continued on page 7
Peter Pan brings Neverland to Anthem MARC BUCKHOUT MANAGING EDITOR
It will be one of the biggest theater productions to ever take flight in Anthem. In deciding to take on the challenge of Peter Pan Jackie Hammond the founder of Musical Theater of Anthem said many considerations factored into the decision. “Every year we try to do one big show and at some point you think what’s bigger than Peter Pan?” she said. “With this one it’s go big or go home.” With a cast of nearly 100, ProMusica lending its talents

with a 17-piece orchestra and three dynamic lead characters Hammond thinks she’s got a combination that will have theater fans clamoring to Boulder Creek High School for the show which will include eight performances from Jan. 14 – 22. “It’s a show not to be missed,” she said. “Not a lot of people do Peter Pan not only because of the length of the show, but because of the special effects. It’s a very entertaining show, one that is appealing to all ages.” The special effects Hammond refers to will be the flying done
by the main characters. A company that specializes in helping theater companies perform flying scenes in their shows will spend the week leading up to opening night giving direction. “They fly somebody in from Kentucky and stay with us for five days,” Hammond said. “They train four flying operators and a flying supervisor while spending five days getting things ready for the show.” Megan Mahoney will be making her third appearance in a production of Peter Pan, but

Cave Creek Museum is seeking residents help in preserving these memories digitally on its new blog designed to capture stories from individuals, families, and businesses alike. Blog entries will be saved and possibly highlighted during the Museum’s celebration of the state’s Centennial in February 2012. “Maybe you took a spectacular hike in Spur Cross or you participated in the Fiesta Day parade. The Museum would love for you to share that special memory, which we will preserve forever,” said Evelyn Johnson, Cave Creek Museum’s executive director. “Looking back, we have had lots of highlights here at the Museum, especially when our historic church served as a venue for joyful weddings. We would love to hear from folks who got married in our church.” Cave Creek Mayor Vincent Francia, who has served consecutively for the past 12 years, said his fondest memory relates to the Town’s preservation efforts. “My fondest memory is the saving of Spur Cross. Against
insurmountable odds, the citizens rose up in chorus, giving voice to a desert, song to a cause and identity to a community,” Francia said. Johnson said community members can share their fondest memories of Cave Creek, Carefree, and the Desert Foothills area on the Museum’s web site, www. C ave C r e e k M u s e u m . o r g, beginning Monday, January 3. Those who would like to share photos of a special memory can send them to the Museum for consideration of a special collage on the Museum’s web site and exhibit in the Museum. The Museum will accept photos via e-mail at evelyn@cavecreekmuseum. com or by mail at Cave Creek Museum, P.O. Box 1, Cave Creek, AZ 85327. Located at 6140 Skyline Dr., Cave Creek Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. The museum hours are Wed., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; and $2 for students. Children 12 and under are free. For information, call (480) 488-2764 or visit www. cavecreekmuseum.org.

Anthem losses advocate for breast cancer research Anthem resident Linda Kacmarsky, a Team W.I.S.H. Captain and Co-Founder of Team W.I.S.H. Arizona, passed away on December 20, 2010 after losing a battle with cancer. In 2004, Kacmarsky and three other friends started the team and this past October during a fundraising event, announced that Team W.I.S.H. (Walking in Spirit and Hope) Arizona has raised more than $1,000,000 in the fight against breast cancer. “For those of us that knew her, there will be a hole in our hearts for some time to come. She was our leader, our friend, a fighter and a tireless advocate for others – one whose memory will live in the work she accomplished and the lives that she touched,” Carol Stacy, co-captain of Team W.I.S.H. said. Fellow teammate
Pat Drapac echoed those sentiments. “Linda was the instrumental driving force behind Team W.I.S.H.,” she said. “It was with her guidance that the team was formed in 2004, and it was with her leadership as Captain that the team accomplished milestones in raising awareness and funding for Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. Without her involvement, Team W.I.S.H. would never have existed.” Drapac said the loss has already been felt. “Linda was a wonderful person, talented and loving, competent and caring, and the Anthem community has suffered a great loss,” she said. “Linda not only made the world more special, but she made it better because she took the time, energy and courage to reach out to others. She was an organizer, a crusader, and a tireless
advocate for finding a cure for breast cancer. She was well-loved and respected and I never knew anyone who had as many friends or who deserved them more. She truly accomplished so many things on earth, and I will forever be grateful to have known her, and to have had her as a friend.” Kacmarsky recently was named Volunteer of the Year by the North Valley’s Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs for her outstanding efforts in raising funds and awareness about breast cancer. A celebration of Kacmarsky’s life will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, at St.Rose Philippine Ducesne Parish, 2825 W.Rose Canyon Circle, Anthem, AZ 85086. Members of Team W.I.S.H. Arizona have already made plans to honor Kacmarsky during the 2011 Susan G. Komen AZ 3-Day event.

Family and friends were joined by the Desert Foothills branch of Habitat for Humanity, and Kurt and Brenda Warner to welcome the newest resident to New River, Heather Turner and her son Carson during a ceremony Dec. 22. The Warner’s foundation surprised her by furnishing the home off 27th Ave. and New River Road.
Foundation is the “Homes for the Holidays” program which rewards unsuspecting candidates who achieve the dream of homeownership with everything a first-time homeowner needs. With a wide-eyed Carson and a teary-eyed Heather the Warners led the family through a fully furnished home including brand new furniture, kitchen supplies, a washer and dryer, a computer and all of the essentials needed for beginning a new life in a new home. “I remember being a single mom on food stamps
trying to make ends meet,” Brenda said. “It is such a privilege to be able to reward Heather for her hard work in providing a stable environment for her son.” Warner said that while having a work ethic, believing in oneself and having faith are all critical elements to succeeding sometimes it takes an outside source to make a break through. “Sometimes you need somebody to take a chance on you,” he said. “For me at times that was a coach. It can come from a lot of different sources. We’re glad we can help, but this is not a
handout it’s a hand up.” Rogers said that the Desert Foothills branch of Habitat for Humanity, which has served families in the communities of Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale, North Phoenix, Rio Verde, Tonto Verde, Anthem New River and Desert Hills since 2001, expects to step up efforts in building more homes in 2011. Anthem youth lead team to California tourney title

The Anthem contingent including Olivia Landis (front left), Brenna Pillsbury, Hannah Baptist, Makayla Roe and Jessica Zabinski are joined by head coach Mark Kerlin and assistant coach Doug Pillsbury following the Arizona Elite’s 1-0 finals victory over Poway California on Dec. 18.
STAFF REPORT
The AZ Elite, a team comprised of the top youth soccer players in Arizona, recently conducted tryouts for girls born in the year 2000. Five Anthem soccer club players made the team and were in San Diego earlier this month to compete in the Coronado Holiday Cup against top tier California teams. The Anthem Club players not only made the squad but excelled. Jessica Zabinski, who has 26 goals this year, started the tournament by scoring the
Elite’s first goal. Brenna Pillsbury added two more goals and Makayla Roe notched her first goal of the tournament to secure an 8-1 opening game victory. During the tournament the Arizona girls, who finished 3-1, outscored all other teams in their age group with nine more goals than their closest competition. Anthem’s own Hannah Baptist and Olivia Landis anchored the defensive effort while Pillsbury and Roe took care of the offense, leading the team with three goals each. In the finals, on Dec. 18, the
AZ Elite team took the field in cold, drizzly conditions, as the wind whipped in from the Pacific Ocean only a few hundred yards away. Playing against a tough Poway California team, the score was deadlocked at 0-0 with three minutes to go. That’s when one of the best U11 combinations in the state took over. Pillsbury secured the ball at midfield and made a perfect left-footed pass to Roe, who broke free of the defenders and pounded a shot in the upper right hand corner giving the AZ Elite a 1-0 tournament win.

A labyrinth is not a maze but is a journey consisting of a 46 foot diameter, 11 circuits that all wind their way to the center and

then back out. There are no dead ends or tricks it is a simple path and a simple choice. Wagenfuehr, the creator of the garden and labyrinth, located at 40507 N. New River Road, said she wanted to create a place of beauty, truth and sacredness where friends and neighbors could go to figure things out. She said that she hopes that in these current challenging economic times people will be able to find calm, by focusing on the basics: nature’s beauty, divine truths, and sacredness.
Saturday’s ceremony, which will start at 10 a.m. is open to ministers, spiritual advisors and anyone in the counseling field. At 10 a.m. on Sunday the public is invited to explore the garden and labyrinth, which will be open from 10 a.m. until dusk. For information about the prayer and meditation garden call Stacey at 602-796-6766 or simply come by and visit. The labyrinth is available for groups to rent and Stacey is available to teach classes about it as well.

MILEY
Miley is a super sweet three year old black lab that is new to ALGBR. She has a wonderful personality and loves to be with people. She is very affectionate and loves to get her ears and belly scratched. Miley is past the puppy stage and is a very mellow girl. She just likes to hang out with the family and snuggle. When you’re ready to play, just get out a frisbee and toss it awhile. She’s great at catching it and bringing
it right back to you. She even knows a few commands like “sit”, “shake”, “lay down” and “high 5”. What a smart girl! Miley has spent most of her life outside, but has learned not to have accidents in the house. If you have a doggie door, Miley should be just fine. Miley currently resides in foster with three other dogs. She has also lived with dogs in her previous home, but introductions will be necessary with potential adopter’s own pets to make sure she is comfortable with
her new family. We do know that she does not like cats. If you would like more information on Miley or other dogs in need of loving homes, please contact Arizona Labrador & Giant Breed Rescue at www.azlabsandgiants.org. Miley’s adoption fee covers the cost of her spay, vet check, heartworm test, microchip, 5 in 1 vaccination, Rabies and Bordatella vaccination. We are also desperately seeking foster homes, so please stop by our website to find out how you can help save a lab!

DPS warns of weather issues with High Country driving STAFF REPORT
With the new fallen snow in the High Country many people will be traveling to see and experience the new winter wonderland. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) urges motorists who travel into high country to monitor weather and road conditions before leaving and to avoid stopping along the side of the Interstate or Highway for nonemergency purposes such as playing in the snow. DPS TRAVEL TIPS: •Check on the latest winter road conditions, call 5-1-1 or view this information on the Web at www. AZ511.com. Dial 9-1-1 only for emergency situations. •Leave at least 500 feet of distance between your vehicle and a snowplow or salt truck. •Make sure your gas tank is full and you have some food, warm blankets and clothing in the vehicle in case of emergency. If you have a cell phone, make sure it’s fully charged and working. •Tell others about your travel route and itinerary, so that if you don’t arrive at your destination, they can
Ring in the
contact law enforcement officers and inform them where to look. •Keep others informed if you’re going to be late or encounter problems so they won’t worry needlessly. •It’s safer to travel with passengers and convoy with other vehicles than it is to drive alone. •Remember, the speed limit is based on clear roads and dry pavement, don’t drive too fast for conditions. Four-wheel drive doesn’t permit you to drive faster on snow packed or icy roads •Watch for slippery spots on bridges and overpasses. •Take note of mileposts, exit numbers or crossroads in case you slide off the road or are involved in a crash so that law enforcement officers and tow truck operators can find you. •If the storm makes driving too hazardous or if your car breaks down, stay in the vehicle. Run your engine and heater for short intervals to stay warm. Be sure to crack the window to avoid carbon monoxide build-up. •Add a winter solution/ de-icer windshield washer fluid as summer solution will freeze solid. Wiper
condition should be checked as well. Check your vehicle’s tire tread thickness and condition, some motorists may elect to have winter tires installed, either studded or nonstudded. Tire chains are also a good idea to have on-hand for traveling or living in the high country. DPS SNOW-PLAY / RECREATION ADVISORY: Stopping along a highway to play in the snow is dangerous and potentially deadly. Vehicles traveling too fast in snow conditions may slide uncontrolled off of the roadway. Parking along the roadways prevents snowplows from clearing roads and restricting traffic including emergency vehicles. Motorists may also become stuck after pulling off of the roadway which can be costly, requiring a tow truck to respond to pull the motorist out. Travelers can locate appropriate parks and other areas to enjoy the new snow fall away from busy highways. Visitors wishing to play in the snow in the Flagstaff area are asked to contact the Flagstaff Visitor’s Center at 928-774-9541 or 800-842-7293 or visit their web site at “http:// flagstaffarizona.org” to get the most
current and up to date information along with a map and guide to the local snow-play recreational areas. Keep in mind that snowplay areas fill up very quickly, so plan your trip accordingly The following links are to each of Arizona’s six national forests which provide more detailed information on snow-play, and other recreational activities. opinions & letters
A new decade can’t come soon enough How glum are we Americans? When asked by the NBC NewsWall Street Journal poll how we compared the past 10 years to other decades, 55 percent of respondents answered either “a very bad decade” or “one of the worst decades in American history.” But it was the answer to the very next question in the same survey that explained to me the nation’s current melancholy: “Thinking about the first 10 years of the 21st century — which of these events had the greatest effect on you personally.” The list included the terrorists’ attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the federal budget deficit, Hurricane Katrina, the BP oil spill in the Gulf and the economic recession.” Not surprisingly, a full one out of three — 33 percent — named 9/11, the date and events of which have changed our own lives and our nation’s. From the way we travel, work, shop and live, nothing has been the same since that day of terror and death. Another 11 percent answered that their lives had been most influenced by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the event of the past decade that has had the greatest impact upon Americans — chosen by two out of five of us (39 percent) has been and continues to
be the economic recession. It is both national and personal. Between the end of 1999 all the way to 2010 — while the nation’s population was growing by more than 27 million — there was no net increase in private-sector jobs. We have lived through a lost decade. Median-income American households made less last year, when adjusted for inflation, than they did 10 years ago. More than 15 million of us are still unemployed this Christmas season, more than 40 percent of whom have now been out of work for more than for six months. Millions more are now classified as “involuntary parttime workers” because their hours have been cut back or they have been unable to find full-time employment. Employers, even when they do need additional help, have resisted hiring full-time permanent workers. According to The New York Times, after the mild recession at the beginning of the decade, just 7.1 percent of the new workers were temporary hires. But this year, that share of part-time, temporary hires has nearly quadrupled, to 26.1 percent. Workers, whose own self confidence and cohesiveness have been frequent casualties to actual layoffs and the
corporations’ implicit threat to ship their jobs off-shore, now accept wages and working conditions that, less than a generation ago, would have been unacceptable or even grounds for a strike vote. Add to all this the losses of the value — including, sadly, too often the ownership, as well — of Americans’ homes, of their pension and retirement funds, and their investments and savings, and you can understand why Americans’ traditional optimism — the same spirit that settled the frontier and built a national society that has been truly the envy of the world — is today in such perilously short supply. The iron rule of U.S. politics remains: When the economy is bad, the economy is the only issue; when the economy is good, other issues — as important as saving the environment or as trivial as reciting the Pledge of Allegiance — can gain voters’ attention. In the winter of 2010-11, in this uncharacteristically gloomy land of ours, the economy is indeed bad. And jobs and the economy remain the only issue! Planning committee member stands up for Anthem Memorial I am writing in response to the letter from Major Henry Newman, MD, US Army Veteran, published recently (Dec. 15) in opposition to the Anthem Veterans Memorial project. To set the record straight: •The project was not advertised or approved to be “self funded.” The Anthem Community Council initially set aside $100,000 from Enhancement Funds (not operating funds) for the project and committed to funding the difference between funds raised and project cost. The Enhancement Funds are generated from the sales of homes in the community, not homeowner assessments. •Construction of the Anthem Veterans Memorial will not affect Council operating funds. It will require the expenditure of less than 1/2 of 1 percent of existing Enhancement Funds. Since the Enhancement fund is currently valued at over $3 Million, the project does not spend “….money we do not have.” •To date, paver sales and donations have yielded nearly $70,000. •This Memorial will be
marketed nationally. We have not estimated the economic impact on Anthem because this is not a commercial project. Due to its unique and compelling design, it is likely this Memorial will attract visitors. •The Memorial is located so that it will be visible and observable from adjacent streets. It will be illuminated in all hours of darkness. “Tagging artists” will be viewed, video taped, quickly reported to the authorities, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Finally, the Anthem Veterans Memorial is not about “military types paying homage to ourselves.” It is about a community of ordinary people honoring those who put on a uniform and served something greater than their selfinterest, as did Major Newman. Coincidently, someone purchased a paver for this Memorial in Major Newman’s honor. I applaud the gesture, and thank him for his service. Ronald D. Tucker Chair, Anthem Veterans Memorial Planning Committee
Desert Hills woman opposes tax dollars going toward abortions As a taxpayer, I am opposed to hundreds of millions of my hard-earned tax dollars being used to fund abortion and abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, the largest provider in America. That is why I am a part of the Susan B. Anthony List’s Stop Abortion Funding campaign (www.stopabortionfunding. com), which is working to pass two pro-life bills that would end all federal funding of abortion. The “No Taxpayer Funding for
Abortion Act,” a bi-partisan bill sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), would create a government-wide statutory prohibition on abortion funding, including problematic provisions in the health care bill. The “Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act” ensures that organizations, including Planned Parenthood, do not receive federal dollars under the Title X federal family planning assistance program. According to the Government Accountability
Office, abortion providers have received over a billion dollars in the past seven years alone. I signed a petition at www. StopAbortionFunding.com to let my Representative in Congress know that I expect them to co-sponsor and vote for these two bills. I shouldn’t have to be complicit in the destruction of innocent human life when I pay my taxes. Rebecca Curtis Desert Hills
