Merrill Gardens at Anthem set to open in autumn 2016 ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
ANTHEM – The Merrill Gardens at Anthem construction is moving quickly, and the retirement community is scheduled to be open for residents this autumn. Resident applications are already being accepted. The community will be located at 2800 W Rose Canyon Circle, east of the Daisy Mountain Drive/ Meridian Road intersection. An informational meeting for potential residents will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the St. Rose Parish, which adjoins the Merrill Gardens grounds. Bill Pettit, R.D. Three suspects arrested in connection with Anthem burglaries ANTHEM – On Jan. 27, Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office officers arrested three suspects in connection with burglaries in Anthem. Derrick Fargo, Terrick Fargo, and Marlon Nieves-Catala, all 18 years old, were arrested and are facing several charges. MCSO Det. Doug Matteson reported that, on Jan. 27, deputies responded to a call saying that 18-to-20-year-old males were looking into houses. As the investigation continued, MCSO officers linked the suspects who were later arrested to the burglaries. Terrick Fargo was the first
suspect to be arrested. His twin brother Derrick was later taken into custody at the Fry’s grocery store on Daisy Mountain Drive. Officers were able to get a description of a vehicle connected with the suspects. “Deputies made a traffic stop on that vehicle, which was stolen out of Phoenix,” Matteson said. Nieves-Catala was reportedly driving the vehicle and was arrested. During the investigation and search on Jan. 27, emergency precautions were taken at

DESERT HILLS – Two structures were destroyed in a fire in Desert Hills on Monday. Captain Dave Wilson of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department reported that the fire was “fully involved” by the time the first DMFD truck, which came from threequarters of a mile away, arrived on the scene.

“The fire was isolated to a travel trailer and a 20’ storage container,” Wilson said. “Efforts were concentrated on keeping the fire from spreading to other buildings and neighboring properties.” DMFD was able to contain and extinguish the fire.

SCOTTSDALE – Aquila Hall, the newest addition to Paradise Valley Community College at Black Mountain, is officially open. This new instructional building at the north Scottsdale campus includes science labs, a highpowered astronomy telescope and a viewing deck, multiple classrooms, and a computer lab. Select Black Mountain spring semester classes will be held in Aquila Hall. The construction of Aquila Hall was funded by the 2004 MCCCD General Obligation Bonds.
