Snake season: Stay aware of your surroundings to avoid rattlesnake encounters

NORTH VALLEY – The north valley spring weather is here, and the return of warmer temperatures also means snakes are heading out of wintering sites and becoming more active. While many varieties of snakes aren’t venomous and don’t pose a danger to people or pets, Arizona is home to some venomous snakes, including the well-known Diamondback rattlesnake. DFLT’s Sonoran Stars fundraiser set for April 29 CAREFREE – This year’s Sonoran Stars event to benefit Desert Foothills Land Trust will be held Saturday, April 29, at the Carefree Resort and Conference Center. “We are looking forward to another exciting evening under the Sonoran Stars. This year we will be treated to a true wild-west experience with gun slinging lawdogs and outlaws,” said Vicki Preston, Desert Foothills Land Trust’s executive director. “It’s sure to be a wonderful evening, celebrating our work to
protect the desert we love.” The Land Trust’s conservation efforts play a vital role in protecting the Sonoran Desert landscape. “We simply cannot accomplish our important mission without the generous support of our Sonoran Stars sponsors, guests and other donors,” said Preston. Teenager injured during bull riding at Cave Creek restaurant CAVE CREEK – A teenager participating in bull riding on Saturday at Outlaw Annie’s in Cave Creek was seriously injured after being bucked off and trampled. Rural Metro Fire Department and Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office responded to the emergency call. MCSO Sergeant Joaquin Enriquez noted that the initial assessment of the 18-year-old man indicated life-threatening injuries; the assessment of his condition later went from life-threatening injuries to non-life threatening injuries, according to emergency crews.
“It’s our understanding he was thrown off of a bull and kicked in the head area,” Enriquez said via email. “Fire personnel arrived on scene and transported the victim but then advised he was alert and answering questions.” Shawn Gilleland, Rural Metro Fire Department PIO, noted via email that the teen was “originally unconscious, however he was alert and conscious when he was airlifted to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital.” No further information on the teen’s current condition was released.
Bobcat Skid-Steer stolen from gas station jobsite NEW RIVER – Sometime on the night of Wednesday, April 5 or early morning Thursday, April 6, a Bobcat Skid-Steer was stolen from the New River gas station jobsite, according to an email sent to The Foothills Focus by the contractors. The community is asked to spread the word to try to get this equipment recovered. If you have any information on this theft or saw suspicious activity, please call Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office’s Crime Stop line at (602) 876-1011.
