Sheriff Penzone discusses community issues at forum ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

NORTH VALLEY – Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone spoke at a community meeting on Friday, discussing local issues and sharing plans and priorities for Valley law enforcement. The meeting, which was sponsored by the New River/ Desert Hills Community Association and the Anthem Community Council, was wellattended, and Penzone received a warm welcome from attendees. He addressed a wide range of topics, including the future of Tent City, drug enforcement, traffic law enforcement, and MCSO staffing.

Two fires sparked in Table Mesa area over Easter weekend NORTH VALLEY – Firefighters responded to two fires in the Table Mesa area on Sunday. Crews worked together to extinguish the fires, spending approximately 10 hours battling the blazes. “There were 2 separate fires totaling approximately 6 acres in basically the same area,” Daisy Mountain Fire Department Captain Matt Wood said via email. “The main concern was rough terrain and protection of high tension power lines as the fire was threatening the power lines.” Daisy Mountain Fire Department, Black Canyon Fire Department, and Bureau of Land Management crews all

worked on the scene together; approximately 60 firefighters were on scene. The cause of the fires has not yet been released.

As wildfire season approaches, DMFD is reminding the community to be responsible with activities in the desert to help avoid sparking fires.

Healthy Kids Day at Desert Foothills YMCA set for April 29 SCOTTSDALE – Join the Desert Foothills YMCA on Saturday, April 29 for a free community event to inspire more kids to find ways to keep their minds and bodies healthy and active this summer. Desert Foothills Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families. The event offers activities, giveaways, and presentations, and participants will have the opportunity to sign up for a YMCA membership with special offers only available during the event. Activities will be geared toward safety, nutrition, and

healthy living, including information on healthy eating and water safety. Healthy Kids Day will also feature arts and crafts, face painting, a bounce house, food vendors, and more.

and make appearances, including world renowned artist and sculptor Ray Villafane, Reptile Adventures representatives, and Phoenix Suns representatives. Kids can also experience an outdoor climbing wall that is one of the many offerings at Camp Sky Y-the Valley of the Sun YMCA’s Overnight Adventure Camp in Prescott.
