NORTH VALLEY – With the record high temperatures this past week, many local residents are heading out to one of Arizona’s lakes. Stay safe out on the water by following boating safety guidelines.

Arizona Game and Fish Department has issued a reminder of the importance of boating safety after a man was seriously injured in a recent boating accident. The man was struck by a boat propeller and had to be airlifted to a hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

CAVE CREEK – After months of debate and public hearings, the Cave Creek Town Council unanimously approved the Cahava Springs Revitalization District on June 15, which will allows the property owners of the subdivision to tax themselves, financing major infrastructure projects within the town estimated at over $19 million.

In order to move forward with the formation of Cahava Springs special tax district, the town council first rectified a technical error that halted discussion and approval of the tax district at the last council

meeting. Citizen Eileen Wright objected to the legality of the hearing on June 1, at the last meeting, when she pointed out that no date had been published on the public notice regarding Cahava Springs.

Under the recommendation of the town’s attorney, the hearing and discussion was halted until the error could be corrected.

Then, at the June 15 meeting, the council unanimously agreed to retroactively insert the hearing date of June 1, 2015, making the motion legal, continuing the hearing and final approval of the Cahava Springs District.

year. The celebration is early this year so that families can enjoy the festivities and still have time to go out of town for the weekend if desired.

This year’s event will include rides, water slides, inflatables, live music and dancing, and festival food. The fireworks show is planned for 9:30 p.m. that night. Traveling stilt walkers will entertain the crowd throughout the park. Fun items glow products and temporary tattoos on sale at the park.

Admission and parking are free. Due to the large number of attendees, participants are encouraged to carpool and walk to the event, if possible.

Canon Elementary teacher named Yavapai County Rural Teacher of the Year BLACK CANYON CITY – Canon Elementary School fifth grade teacher Trinka Hall has been named as the Yavapai County Rural Teacher of the Year.

Hall teaches all fifth grade subjects and is the Math Mentor for Title I teachers. According to her fellow staff, Hall’s educational foundation and understanding of the profession is excellent. Her rapport with the students and parents is very positive. She uses many varied forms of teaching and has great technological skills. Hall stays late and comes in early. Hall is open to new ideas and welcomes any insight that can benefit the students.

Outside the classroom, Hall goes above and beyond, too. She works collaboratively with all the teachers to design SMART Board lessons, fix computers, and help build the school calendar. She has worked on the White Cane Parade, participated in field day, and helped out with the science fair.

The staff reports, “The teachers at Canon enjoy working with her and at our school; we are like family…we fully support Mrs. Hall in her endeavor to take on the new challenge of her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.”

Hall has completed both the Intel Math and Science Programs, and she ran the Agua Fria Science Study, for which she received a grant. The students studied the protected lands of Agua Fria National Monument. This year, she also introduced Biztown to the students.

Along with the sixth grade teacher, the classes went to Phoenix and spent a day at a bank practicing business skills.

Superintendent Angela Jangula says, “Trinka Hall is a dedicated employee of the Canon SD #50. She is a highly ethical

and industrious person, who brings to her assignments a great deal of energy, enthusiasm, and ability. If I could find a way to duplicate Mrs. Hall and keep her in education forever, I would in a heartbeat.”

One of her 5th grade students, Izabellah Ruiz, had this to say about her, “My 5th grade teacher was Mrs. Hall. She is a very amazing teacher. Any time I needed help with my work, she was there. Mrs. Hall is one of my favorite teachers. She is caring, and made our whole class feel special.”

Trinka Hall will move on to the next round of interviews and we wish her luck on becoming the State Rural Teacher of the Year!

High-country lakes newly stocked with trout NORTH VALLEY – For desert dwellers itching to escape the triple-digit doldrums, there’s a refreshing remedy – head to the cool, pine-scented high country for some of the 500,000 “farm fresh” trout that Arizona Game and Fish Department employees and volunteers stock during May and June.

As desert temperatures consistently crack 100 degrees, visit the mountain regions before the summer heat raises lake temperatures and trout activity patterns slow down. Summer has officially started, yet great spring fishing remains – for now.

They’re valid for 365 days from the date of purchase and help conserve wildlife.

More than half of the money used for the AZGFD hatchery program comes from the Sport Fish Restoration Program. It was created through the Dingell-Johnson Act of 1950 (Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act) and the Wallop-Breaux amendments of 1984.

Through a federal excise tax paid by manufacturers on fishing gear and

motorboat fuels, it provides grant funds for fishery conservation, boating access, and aquatic education.

Summer bass-fishing techniques: for the desert lakes, get up early and fish at, or even just before, first light. At most large desert impoundments, anglers should be able to find aggressive bass feeding on shad at the surface, creating “boils.” This provides some of the most exciting fishing of the year.

Use top-water baits, crankbaits, casting spoons or in-line spinners such as Mepps and Rooster Tails.

DVUSD seeks community input NORTH VALLEY – Now that the 2014-15 school year has ended, the Deer Valley Unified School District is seeking community input.

Red Cross holding Blood drive in Anthem ANTHEM – The American Red Cross is asking eligible donors to help ensure a sufficient blood supply now and throughout the summer. A blood drive is being held at the Anthem Community Center on July 13, 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Many summer activities, such as vacations and travel, cause frequent blood donors to be less available to give

during the summer. However, hospital patients still depend on volunteer donors to receive lifesaving transfusions – the need for blood does not get a vacation. Donors of all blood types – especially those with typesO negative, A negative, and B negative – are needed.

Don’t Trash Arizona warning drivers of dangers of roadway litter NORTH VALLEY – Roadway litter presents an added hazard for Valley drivers who are trying to safely navigate the freeways during a monsoon storm. With weather forecasters predicting an early and active rainy season, it is more important than ever that motorists be prepared for heavy winds and blowing debris.

Litter is not only unsightly, but it is dangerous. Roadway debris is responsible for 25,000 accidents nationwide every year, and there are an average of 100 crashes each year on regional freeways involving objects that are thrown out of or fall from vehicles.

Don’t Trash Arizona, a joint effort supported by the Maricopa Association of Governments and the Arizona Department of Transportation, is encouraging Valley drivers to take steps to ensure that the roads are safe and free of unnecessary litter during the monsoon.

Secure your load: Do not toss trash and other objects into truck beds, as they will fly out while driving. An estimated 40 percent of litter comes from trucks and unsecured loads. Secure loads with straps, ropes and bungee cords or cover the entire bed with a tarp or net.

Put it out, inside: Use a portable ashtray in order to store cigarette butts until they can be properly disposed of in a trash can.

Every month, ADOT crews pick up more than 9,250 bags of trash from regional freeways.

That’s about 111,000 bags and 1.2 million pounds of trash every year. Three million in annual taxpayer dollars are spent for the 150,000 hours of labor it takes to pick up trash just along our regional freeways.Cigarette butts represent more than onethird of all freeway litter. They can take years to decompose and the toxic chemicals in them can leach into the water supply.

Foothills Food Bank seeks van drivers CAVE CREEK – The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is in need of volunteer drivers to pick up and drop off food and related items for the food bank. Because requests for food assistance have intensified, van drivers are needed to help ensure the families that are served by Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center receive the food and personal items they need.

The food bank is looking for volunteers who have an SUV or small truck and are available to volunteer one to two days a week for two hours to pick up and transport donated food. Food pick-ups, which range in size/ weight, typically are conducted during in the morning between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Turn Around; Don’t Drown®: County cautions drivers to avoid flooded washes NORTH VALLEY – As monsoon season officially begins, Maricopa County is issuing warnings on the dangers of trying to cross flooded washes.

According to a release from the county, nearly 100 people nationwide drown every year in floods. Over half of those deaths occur in automobiles that are swept downstream.

“People often underestimate the force and power of water,” said Steve Gallardo, Maricopa County District 5 Supervisor.

“Just a few inches of water on the road can cause your tires to lose contact with the pavement and for you to lose control of your car. Never drive across a flooded wash. When in doubt, wait it out, or find a safer route.”

Many drivers misjudge their

ability to navigate flooded roads, putting too much stock in their “heavy” vehicles. In reality, cars, and even SUVs, can be swept off the road in 18-24 inches of moving water.

Follow these tips to stay safe this monsoon season: • Never drive through flooded washes or around a barricade.

• Fast flowing water can float a car downstream and the roadbed may be washed out under the floodwaters.

• Water may be deeper than it appears and can hide many hazards (i.e. sharp objects, electrical wires, open manholes, chemicals, etc.).

• Do not walk through floodwaters. It only takes six inches of moving water to knock you off your feet.

• Be especially cautious at

night. Flood dangers are much more difficult to see in the dark.

• Do not camp or park a vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions.

• Many popular recreation spots are located alongside creeks and rivers. Avoid these areas during storms and don’t return until the weather is cleared and the area is dry.

Be especially careful in areas that were recently burned.

Even areas that are not traditionally flood-prone are at risk due to changes to the landscape caused by wildfire.

Anthem presentation series to offer info on teen issues ANTHEM – A new summer teen series will be offered at the Anthem Civic Building in July. The series will focus on teen issues like drug prevention and awareness, healthy relationships, selfempowerment, and depression.

The weekly gatherings will include special speakers, refreshments, raffles, and important messages for teens.

The free series is a spin-off of the Anthem Community Council’s Drug Prevention Program, which offered quarterly presentations, geared mostly to parents. This year, with the installation of the Anthem Youth Advisory Council and other initiatives involving Anthem’s youth in leadership roles, the focus shifts to teens themselves and topics that affect them. The presentations will be interactive and age-appropriate.

Stay Sharp – Drug Prevention: July 9, 1-2:30 p.m.

Stay Sharp is a hard-hitting, high-energy drug prevention presentation designed to educate students on drug and alcohol abuse and the consequences of their choices. Students will hear speakers share personal stories of their introduction to drugs and the destructive journey it lead them on, as well as a dynamic, thought-provoking video. Stay Sharp program speakers from

Teen Challenge are not hired or scripted; their stories are real.

They found out the hard way that drug and alcohol use came with serious consequences and was not a fun or easy way out.

Kaity’s Way – Healthy Relationships: July 15, 1-2:30 p.m.

Kaity’s Way provides assistance to youth of all ages who are subjected to or involved in violent relationships. The organizations does this by promoting understanding and educating the community to lessen the instances of violence among or against children through ‘PEACE’ (Patience, Empathy, Acceptance, Caring, and Equality). The vision is that awareness and education will bring about the prevention of violence, and therefore a societal shift providing a generation of healthy respectful relationships to be followed by many others.

A victim of a violent relationship, Kaitlyn (Kaity) Marie Sudberry was murdered by her ex-boyfriend on her way home from school in 2008. Kaity was a senior at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix. Her family leads this presentation to help ensure that others don’t ever have to face the same tragedy.

Around the Bluhmin’ Town

Does thirty years matter? Well, I think it is a rather big chunk of time. Long enough to grow old(er), watch children move away, welcome grandbabies to the family, build a life, settle in and enjoy the golden years. Not so fast. Things happen. People change. So when my best friend called to tell me that her husband is leaving her after thirty years of marriage, I was stunned. What happened to a couple who were so close, so in love and the best of friends? Read on.

It seems Jan and Bob (fake names to protect the innocent) were happy. But then an “old friend” of Bob’s whom he knew from forty years ago, showed up in town shortly after her husband died. They had a friendly lunch.

Then three months later she showed up again and they had a “lover’s lunch” where they gazed into each other’s eyes and realized they were still madly in love with each other! Yikes, it even gets nuttier. Bob is 78 years old and his “new love” is the same age. He is leaving his sixty-two year old wife for his “soul-mate.”

So Bob is packing and moving to Hawaii in a few weeks to be with his “one true love,” leaving Jan to wonder what he has been smoking. She is handling it with “courage and class” by being civil. I told her, I think my husband Doug, might be looking down the barrel of his own gun while he has thirty minutes to pack and go. But then I am not nice like Jan. Till death do us part? No way!

There is a growing trend called “gray divorce.” According to a study done by sociologists in Bowling Green State University, one out of four people divorcing in the United States is 50 or older and one in ten is 65 or

older! The divorce rates for couples over the age of fifty has doubled since 1990. Perhaps more shocking is that most of these divorces occur in couples married over 25 years!

Maybe the bigger question is this: Do we ever really know someone? I mean, can you travel, entertain friends, go to Costco together, cook meals, shop, sleep and talk together and then stop loving each other? I guess so. I know Bob’s reasoning: you only have one life to live so enjoy it while you can. Blah, blah, blah.

What about commitment and promises?

My friend, Jan, has been on a soul-searching mission and claims she cannot really come up with one solid clue or reason why Bob is leaving. So maybe life “just happens” and one day you are happy and one day you realize – not really? Clearly, we cannot take anyone or anything for granted. Life comes t us fast. Things happen and people change.

I asked Doug what he thought of Bob suddenly leaving for Hawaii to be with his “true love.” Doug shook his head in disbelief and said, “Bob is going to hate Hawaii. He will go stir-crazy on a small island.”

Not exactly the response I was looking for!

Doug has two Hawaiian shirts. When he saw me placing them in a bag for the Goodwill, he asked what I was doing. I told him that he looks “terrible” in Hawaiian shirts (a lie). He laughed and wanted to know why I would give away two perfectly good shirts. My reply?

“Hawaiian shirts today, a Mai Tai tomorrow, and next week the grass skirt looks better on the other side of the world.” He laughed for a full minute and it

is not even funny!

Relationships are tricky. A lady in Cave Creek emailed me to see if I would “take her good old horse” as she was moving to San Diego and leaving her husband of forty years because she was “bored.” She said it will

leave her twenty-eight year old horse. Ouch! And then a man in Anthem emailed to say he always loved his wife of thirty years, but now he thinks he would be better off “single and free.” People, get a grip on your emotions!

“The project is private, the lines are in, most folks’ wells have gone dry, so this is a good thing,” said Councilman Dick Esser when explaining why he was voting in favor of the special tax district.

The formation of Cahava Springs Revitalization District allows the subdivision to issue special bonds to the 230 residential lots based on home value and will be paid yearly by the homeowner, which will be used to complete several town infrastructure projects. The bonds will be used to improve a portion of the existing waterline south of Joy Ranch Road; the activation of the existing waterline on 26th Street north of Joy Ranch Road; extension of the water line to 32nd Street and Honda Bow Road; installation of booster pumps and storage tanks necessary to deliver water; and roadway improvements along Saddle Mountain, 32nd Street, Rockaway Hills, and into Cahava Springs development, including bridge structures, grading, drainage structures, and paving.

The newly formed special tax district promises to provide the infrastructure to deliver water to residents on the west-side of town, who do not currently

receive municipal water services.

“I have been fighting for water for a long time,” said Terry Smith, who lives on the west-side of town and currently hauls water to his property. “The lines have been there for over six, seven years and the town has not taken over them and put water in them. This appears to be the solution.”

However, not all residents were in favor of the approved formation of the Cahava Springs district, and attended

obituaries Harold L. Gensler On June 11, 2015, Harold passed away due to complications from a fall in April.

Harold was a true patriot and very proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Edgecombe, an attack troop transport ship. He retired as a Sergeant from the Norfolk, Virginia Police Department after 23 years of service. After traveling extensively around the U.S., Harold and his wife, Sivia, relocated to Anthem, AZ to be near family.

Harold was a huge proponent of living a healthy lifestyle and worked out regularly at the Anthem Country Club gym until the week before his injury. He was well known in Anthem and an inspiration to others. Harold was also known for being quite a storyteller recounting his life in the Navy, Police Department, and his many adventures and pranks. He was a true character and well-liked by everyone who knew him.

Technical Sergeant Ralph Harold Zeller, US Air Force Reserve Retired, resident of Sun City, AZ since 2005 and resident of Arizona since 1987, accepted orders to report to Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates of Heaven on June 2, 2015 at the age of 77.

Ralph spent his entire adult life serving and helping others.

Ralph joined and honorably served his country in the US Marines from 1957 to 1960.

Ralph and his wife Clio JoAnn Piper moved to Arizona in 1987 and opened new Diet Center offices in Phoenix and on Easy Street in Carefree.

Ralph was preceded in death by his youngest son: Joseph William Zeller (named after Ralph’s great grandfather,

Ralph never met a stranger – he made others smile daily, made friends easily, conversed with anyone nearby and shared countless laughs with his loud, infectious laugh. Ralph will be missed by everyone who knew him, but we rejoice in the honor we had in knowing him.

Ralph will be interred at the rural St Joseph Cemetery outside Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund is being established in Ralph’s name. There will be a gathering to remember Ralph at his home in Sun City on July14, 1-4 p.m. For more details, please call JoAnn.

The remaining cast of Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, and Lewis Black play nicely off one another once they are forced to start working together.

There is much more to “Inside Out” than described here, but to share too much would be to

spoil the surprise. Whether a commentary for parent discussion or an explanation for children, the film doesn’t shy away from the challenging emotions experienced in childhood or surprisingly how it continues in different ways throughout adulthood. “Inside Out” is an accomplished narrative that is supported by talented actors and lead by an insightful creative team. It’s an ambitious animated film for all ages.

My kid was recently sitting on the ground with his head down fighting a nap. I asked him what was wrong, and he responded simply with “I don’t know why I am sad”. Emotions are a constant in Pixar films. Look no further than their impressive catalog of films to display this quality; the first ten minutes of “Up” is a perfect example. What separates Pixar from some competition is the way they utilize these emotions to assist in the development of the script and characters. “Inside Out” tackles the topic of emotions taking place literally inside the head of a little girl. While Pixar may have stumbled slightly with their last few films, “Inside Out” is a return to impressive form. Director Pete Doctor and Ronaldo Del Carmen bring a unique storytelling quality to this animated film, one that moves in and out of one character’s mind, and the result is a film that is smart, poignant, and thought provoking.

Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias) is a young girl who loves playing hockey and being silly with her mom and dad. She is living a happy life in the Midwest until her father starts a new job in San Francisco, uprooting Riley from the familiar and comforting routine she has come to enjoy. This is a

Animated films offer a medium of storytelling that, in some regards, offers greater freedom to tackle subjects complex or difficult to execute.

“Inside Out” is unique in the regard that it portrays the literal

emotions of the mind with characters. Director Pete Doctor and Ronaldo Del Carmen accomplish this storytelling aspect gracefully, allowing the oldest and youngest viewer easy navigation throughout.

The narrative also offers some effective metaphors of life and learning, ones that are nicely accomplished through the characters of Joy and Sadness, both of whom do not understand the importance of one another.

The animation is exceptional.

Just like the compositions of Pixar’s previous works, “Inside Out” crafts an atmosphere that is distinctive. The formation of the world that Riley sees, a wintry, bright Minnesota when she is happy or a dreary, overcast San Francisco when she is sad, or the world of the emotions that is formed with orbs of color that reflect Riley’s memories with formed islands distinguish the important aspects of her personality.

It all serves an important purpose when it comes to displaying how the mind functions on the rollercoaster of life’s emotional events The characters are represented flawlessly, especially the emotions that are a mix of talented comedy actors. Amy Poehler is terrific as Joy, a mile a minute vehicle of glittery yellow with unwavering happiness.

Backpacks being collected for kids in need

ANTHEM – The start of the new school year is fast approaching, and a drive is being held to get school supplies for kids in need.

For the fourth year in a row, foster and adoptive mom Kelley Camasto is collecting backpacks and school supplies for children in foster care shelters and foster families. Camasto has a list of 30 children who need backpacks and basic school supplies.

Anyone who wants to help can contact Camasto. She will provide information on

one of the kids’ needs, and the contributor can buy for that child.

Participants can buy a backpack and fill it with supplies, buy a backpack, or buy school supplies for donation. Monetary donations for school supplies will also be accepted.

Donations need to be turned in by July 17 so that the kids can have what they need before school starts.

She became fascinated by the art and the culture in each country she visited, and marveled at the amazing way art, in each instance, chronicled the history each country’s history keeping alive the spirit of connectedness between

Each glance or the change of light offers the viewer a startling new perspective. The painting they thought they knew and understood from the first encounter is now transformed.

Thrilling, vibrant, and full of surprises, Elizabeth’s work continues to beckon the viewer on a journey of discovery.

Elizabeth grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. After completing her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Iowa,she married and moved to California.

Elizabeth went on to complete a Masters degree in Psychology at California State University at Northridge. Elizabeth then went on for a second Masters in Organization Development and a PhD in Human and Organization Systems from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California.

Also during the family’s time in California, Elizabeth worked as a college instructor at Pierce Junior College and Mount Saint Mary’s College. When her

propeller can still be spinning when the boat is idling or in neutral, so the safest option is to turn the boat off when not in motion.

AZGFD offered further boating safety tips: • State law requires all passengers 12 years old and younger to wear a life jacket while onboard and that the vessel must have one life jacket for each passenger.

• Anyone being towed by a boat or on a personal watercraft such as a jet ski must wear a life jacket.

• Before starting the boat’s engine, walk to the stern to make sure no one is near the propeller.

• Never allow passengers to board or exit while the engine(s) are running.

• Educate passengers on the location and danger of the propellers.

• Take extra precautions around other boats towing skiers and/or tubers.

• Never reverse a boat to pick someone out of the water.

Wearing a life jacket while on a boat isn’t just a good idea – for kids 12 and under, it’s the law.

State law requires that kids wear life jackets while onboard and that every boat has a life jacket available for each passenger. In a boating safety commentary, the United States Coast Guard estimates that life jackets could have saved the lives of over 80 percent of boating fatality victims.

Alcohol and boating can be a dangerous combination.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, more than half of those who died in alcohol-related boating deaths capsized their boats and/or fell overboard. It is illegal in every state to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

YMCA Boating Safety Tips Do wear a life jacket.

Do know the water and environment you will be boating on.

Do keep a good lookout while under way.

Do shut your engines off when people are in the water near your boat.

Do observe the nautical rules of the road.

Do check the weather forecast before getting under way, and keep an eye on the weather while you’re boating.

Do keep a balanced load and a trim boat. Don’t over load your boat.

Be sure that the boat has no objects in it that can make you trip or cause the boat to tip.

Make sure you have required safety equipment. This would include, at a minimum, PFDs for each passenger, a fire extinguisher (for power boats), navigation lights, sound-signaling devices, flares, flags, or other visual distress signals, and a first aid kit.

Don’t stand in a small boat. Don’t ride on the gunwale, bow, seat backs, or anyplace not designed for riding. Move around the boat slowly and carefully, maintaining three points of contact at all times (two hands on the sides, feet on the floor).

Don’t drink alcohol and boat. Alcohol diminishes your ability to navigate safely and can reduce your chances of survival if you end up in the water.

Use your common sense when on the water. If you feel it is dangerous, it probably is.

Always get into a boat at a safe docking place.

An oar or paddle may be used as an extension device for a reaching rescue.

Save horseplay for safe places on land, away from the water.

Stay with the boat if it overturns. Never try to swim ashore.

Learn how to right a boat.

Keep small boats out of main river currents where you may lose control due to the swiftness of the water. Stay instead near riverbanks where the current is not as strong.

Always carry docking lines and keep them in good condition. They can be thrown to someone who has fallen into the water.

Keep small boats away from heavy surf where they can be easily swamped and overturned, trapping the occupants and causing injury.

If waves start to rise, head for safe harbor or sheltered coves for protection from the action of the surf near the shore.

If you have a powerboat or sailboat, learn the rules of the road and the hazards unique to your craft. For instance, a catamaran responds differently in brisk winds than a one-hull sailboat.

Learn how to free a canoe of water if it overturns. Canoes rarely sink, and, with practice, you can easily learn how to upright one.

Bill banning town licensing fees for real estate agents to take effect ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

NORTH VALLEY – Arizona real estate agents will be saving funds on city and town licensing fees when Senate Bill 1368 goes into effect this July.

This bill stipulates that Arizona cities and towns cannot charge real estate agents and brokers for additional business licenses if the agent or broker is already licensed in the state.

Senator Gail Griffin, who is a real estate broker herself, sponsored SB1368.

Governor Doug Ducey approved SB1368 on April 2.

The bill is now set to go into effect the first week of July, 90 days after approval.

The bill received little opposition. The League of Arizona Cities and Towns declared themselves neutra l on the bill, commenting that the bill “appears to have minimal impact.”

As agents frequently work in multiple cities, each town and city charging an additional licensing fee could add up considerably.

Agents and brokers already pay the Arizona Department of Real Estate for exams, licenses, and renewals, as well as paying for continuing education in the field.

Local Realtor Judy Bluhm noted that the additional fees towns and cities could formerly

levy on agents and brokers “did not offer any consumer protection,” as the Arizona Department of Real Estate does.

The Arizona Department of Real Estate oversees the actions of agents and brokers and handles consumer issues or complaints. The ADRE is the go-to resource for homebuyers who need help with legal real estate questions or want to search for disciplinary actions concerning an agent.

Cities and towns don’t oversee licensing complaints.

“The AZ Association of Realtors has 40,000 members and got wind of the practice that some cities were requiring realtors to obtain business licenses at a cost of $100150,” Bluhm explained.

“Realtors take state exams, pay fees to their brokers, and the

practice of having to pay for additional city imposed business license made no sense and could be very expensive for a realtor.

And unnecessary!”

Marsolo remarked that rental fees and business license fees weren’t enforced on everyone and that it was unlikely that a loss of revenue would be felt.

“As Designated Broker of Cave Creek Realty, I supported this bill,” Marsolo said.

“I have paid the Cave Creek business license for years; it will be nice to have $50 extra bucks to spend at the local merchants instead.”

ADOT urging drivers to ‘Pull Aside, Stay Alive’ during dust storms NORTH VALLEY – Where will you be when the dust settles?

That’s a question the Arizona Department of Transportation is asking motorists this year as another summer monsoon season begins.

For the fourth consecutive year, ADOT is rolling out its “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” dust storm public awareness campaign in an ongoing effort to educate drivers about the year-round threat of dust storms as monsoon season officially begins in Arizona today. Dust storms pose a serious public safety risk because they can strike out of nowhere. Motorists can protect themselves if they plan ahead and know the safe actions to take when the dust hits.

This year, ADOT – and partners at the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety,

the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the National Weather Service – has created new television and radio publiceducation announcements that ask drivers if they know what to do if they get caught in a sudden dust storm event. The new TV public service announcement at http://pullasidestayalive.org depicts a young driver following all the safety recommendations when she sees a dust storm while driving along a highway.

ADOT’s mission is to provide useful and memorable safety information to drivers before they get caught in a low-visibility dust storm. This year, the agency’s top recommendation is to avoid driving into a wall of dust at all costs.

“We hope motorists have heard the message that driving into a dust storm is dangerous and should be avoided,”

said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “But every day we have new-to-Arizona drivers, and young drivers, who may not yet know about ‘Pull Aside, Stay Alive.’ If you know a new driver, take a moment to remind them about dust storm safety.”

Halikowski added, “As the monsoon arrives, this year we’re asking drivers to do the smart thing, the safe thing and plan ahead for possible blowing dust and limited visibility along the highway. It’s better to alter travel plans rather than attempting to drive through dust storms. It’s a risk you don’t have to take.”

Dust storms develop quickly and dust-related crashes can occur, particularly along the Interstate 10 corridor between Phoenix and Tucson. To advise drivers of approaching storms, ADOT employs a range of strategies – including electronic

highway message boards, social and traditional media, communication with ADOT staff and law enforcement officers in the field, television and radio advertising, and close coordination with partnering agencies – to keep information flowing to motorists.

Tips for drivers who encounter a dust storm: • Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.

• If you encounter a dust storm, check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.

• Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway

• Stop your vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel.

• Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers.

• Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.

• Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass.

• Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds in high wind.

• A driver’s alertness and safe driving ability are always the top factors in preventing crashes. It is your responsibility to avoid distracted or impaired driving.
