Interim Parkside community manager in ‘trial period’ for prospective permanent position ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF
ANTHEM – Parkside’s community manager is scheduled to be officially chosen in three months. No interviews for the position are being held until after the six-month trial period. Interviews for the position may not be held at all, as the interim community manager position may become permanent. The Anthem Parkside Community Association Board of Directors has released a statement regarding the interim appointment of Mary Beth Zahn as community manager. “As has been previously published and discussed, APCA is currently in the midst of a six-

Interim community manager Zahn and the Board spokespeople declined further comment. The Parkside Community Association Board of Directors statement referenced A.R.S. 33-1804(B)(3) & (4) and A.R.S. 33-1805(B)(4) & (5), noting that under those statutes, “the Board is limited in what it can discuss in open session or disclose to the membership regarding this issue, because this issue involves an individual’s employment with the community.” According to the Arizona legislature, certain
information may be withheld under those statutes, including personal, health, and financial records of individual association members and records relating to the job performance of, compensation of, health records of, or specific complaints against an individual employee. Parkside residents have requested more information on the community manager hiring process after the unexpected departure of former community manager Annette McCarthy, who had worked in Parkside for 12 years. McCarthy is still working for Associated Asset Management, LLC, but no PARKSIDE MANAGER continued on page 6
Retiring New River teachers represent 20 years of excellence in education NEW RIVER – Longtime New River Elementary teachers Bev Thomas and Marilyn Yavello have now retired. The end of the 2014-15 school year marked the completion of their teaching careers. Thomas most recently taught fourth grade at New River Elementary. Through her nearly two decades of teaching, Thomas instructed hundreds of local students. She helped manage Student Council for many years and volunteered in multiple capacities throughout the school. Yavello has retired after 40 years total of teaching, 20 years
with the DVUSD. Most recently a second grade teacher at New River, Yavello has worked in many capacities as an educator, including in SAGE programs, and has volunteered her time in many projects. She volunteered as school photographer for many years and assembled and distributed school yearbooks. Both Yavello and Thomas will be greatly missed! Best wishes for retirement!
