ANTHEM – A tragic suicide attempt resulted in a man being severely burned. On the evening of July 21, Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office Deputies were called to Anthem home due to a reported domestic dispute. “After arriving on scene, they (deputies) spoke with one of the parties involved, who was parked down the street from the residence,” said MCSO Deputy Joaquin Enriquez. “She stated she and her boyfriend were involved in a physical altercation and that he was suicidal.” Deputies then went to the home to make contact with the man. “As they arrived at the home, Deputies heard him tell them he was in the backyard,” Enriquez said. “Upon entering the backyard, MCSO Deputies,

along with Phoenix Police Officers, saw the man sitting in a chair and pouring gasoline over himself. He was flicking a lighter with one hand and held a cigarette in the other.” Law enforcement officers pleaded with the man to reconsider what he was doing. Sadly, the man’s body caught fire. The deputies on-scene worked as fast as possible to save him and were able to put out the flames. The man was transported by air to the burn unit of Maricopa Medical Center with severe injuries. “MCSO’s District IV Detectives were called to the scene and took over the investigation,” Enriquez said. Editor’s note: While the name of the man involved has been released, in consideration of the family, The Foothills Focus is not printing it.
