State Championship Meet in Tucson last month, 10-yearold Dolphins swimmer Emma Sayers won the 100-meter butterfly competition in the 10 and under age group. In addition to her 100-meter butterfly win, Emma came in second in the 400-free and fourth in the 50-fly and 200 individual medley.

Verde. The group of men, all in their late 30s, was expected back the previous day and her husband was due for work that morning. She did note the foursome were experienced backpackers and should have ample food and water. Her attempts to contact anyone in the party by phone were unsuccessful. Deputies noted that those who hike in this canyon often underestimate the time necessary to exit the canyon due to the difficult terrain.

The following morning, July 15, she still had not heard from anyone. Deputies drove to the Bull Pen campground area and located a couple of unoccupied vehicles associated with the group. A Forest Patrol deputy began coordinating a search effort and requested an aerial flyover from DPS Ranger. The Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team’s

and their dogs were safely removed from the canyon thanks to the great work by the Back Country team. Food and water were provided, and all refused medical attention before leaving.

On July 26, at approximately 2 p.m., a 62-year-old Fountain Hills resident called and stated his vehicle was stuck in a very remote area. He said he had taken a wrong turn while attempting to reach Crown King and could no longer move his SUV. The stranded man had no food or water. Using GPS from the

Back Country Unit was also called out and was staged by 11:30 a.m. The DPS Ranger crew had flown over the canyon several times but could not initially locate the missing hikers.

Their efforts continued throughout the afternoon and just after 2:30 p.m., DPS Ranger spotted the group about five miles from the Bull Pen Campground. The Ranger crew landed and determined the men and their dogs would need assistance getting safely out of the canyon due to some minor injuries. The Back Country team devised a plan to use a rope line to help the hikers and their dogs out of the canyon. Just after 7 p.m., all four hikers

911 call, deputies were able to map his approximate location. A Forest Patrol deputy assigned to the rescue knew this area well and noted the “road” is extremely rugged, even for quads, and presented a risk to rescuers. Due to the time it would take for a Quad team to reach the stranded man safely which would require rescuers to travel at dusk and eventually darkness, the Forest Patrol deputy requested YCSO’s Rescue 1 helicopter to assist. The Rescue 1 pilot was able to fly to the area and airlift the man to safety by 5 p.m. His vehicle will be removed at a later date. Rescue 1 has been proven as an extremely valuable tool and in this case, prevented the need to risk the safety of a volunteer search and rescue team.

Yavapai County led the State in rescues for fiscal year 15/16 and the tremendous work by Forest Patrol deputies, search and rescue teams, and the Rescue 1 pilots continues.

also starts at 9 a.m. but will take riders out of town.

“The Poker Trail Ride is a fun way to tour around Cave Creek on horseback, share camaraderie, and enjoy a delicious lunch afterwards,” she said, adding that it is open to riders of all ages.

Evelyn Johnson, CCMEA president and event chair, said volunteers are needed for a variety of roles.

“We need volunteers to be roving photographers, ambassadors to keep people informed of locations and events, guides at shuttle stops and more. This is the perfect opportunity to lend a hand and show off what Cave Creek is all about,” she said.

Arizona Registrar of Contractors launches new Web site PHOENIX – The Arizona Registrar of Contractors has launched a new Web site with mobile-friendly site features and upgrades that will help customers and contractors find the information they need.

In addition to reorganizing the content, the information provided has been updated and reflects the Agency’s current processes, forms, and requirements.

Features highlighted by the AZ ROC include simplifying menus and site structure so that menus and pages are now organized by Contractor Resources and Consumer Resources, rather than by agency department. Another feature is a licensed complaint process flowchart that will assist a complainant and respondent with the steps necessary to investigate a licensed complaint.

The contractor search option has been enhanced for ease of use. The Most Wanted Unlicensed Entity page has been updated with links to the Agency’s Tips Hotline, Local Law Enforcement, and the Unlicensed Violations List. The

AZ ROC has also updated the ‘Before You Hire’ page with suggested steps for consumers.

A checklist of steps on applying for a license has been added to the site.

In addition to the new Web site, AZ ROC is working to bring technology to the Agency that will enable it to accept online license applications, online complaint submissions, and other digital services previously not available to the public.

Foothills Food Bank seeking donors for murals CAVE CREEK – The Foothills Food Bank is building a one-of-a-kind wall mural with glass tiles.

Donors who would like to help the food bank finance its new addition can purchase a 2” X 5” glass tile. The tiles will be etched with the donor’s name and become part of a wall mural. The tiles will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. Each glass tile is $150, and 1,000 tiles are available to the public. community news Goodwill of Central Arizona partners with Career Connectors PHOENIX – Goodwill of Central Arizona and Valleybased non-profit Career Connectors have announced a partnership to help connect job seekers with employment.

Goodwill has 19 no-cost career centers across the Valley, which are funded through donations and Goodwill retail stores. Career Connectors, established in 2008, has served more than 24,000 mid-level professionals with monthly networking events featuring face-to-face meeting time with hiring companies and free resources for job seekers. With the new partnership, Goodwill and Career Connectors will pool data and resources to provide a greater impact on the collective workforce initiatives in Arizona.

One of the goals for the partnership is to further detail the impact the Career Connectors events and resources have for the job seeker. Historically, Career Connectors has collected limited data via a registration process, but hasn’t had the infrastructure to implement a post-event follow up. With Goodwill on board, the two entities hope to build metrics and expedite job searches by providing jobseekers new skills and expanded resources.

D-backs accepting submissions for $100,000 school challenge PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation is now accepting applications for the $100,000 School Challenge, presented by University of Phoenix, to benefit schools across the state of Arizona. The program is open to all Arizona public, private, and nonprofit charter schools, Grades K-12, and teachers and administrators are encouraged to “make their best pitch” on why they deserve to receive this important funding by submitting an application online at dbacks.com/ schoolchallenge by Sept. 30.

The D-backs kicked off the program in the spring of 2012 with the $100,000 School Challenge and received an overwhelming response that inspired the team to continue the program annually. With more than 2,800 applications over the past four seasons, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has been able to help 133 schools for a grand total of $650,000 since the program began. The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and the University of Phoenix provide a combined $100,000 for the program. The grants, which range up to $5,000, have helped schools from across the state with innovative programs to satisfy an array of needs, from a STEM baseball robotics project to a desert garden and a new scoreboard to a special needs playground.

Phoenix Police Department shares back to school safety tips NORTH VALLEY – In preparation for the start of the 2016-2017 school year, the Phoenix Police Department Traffic Bureau will once again be conducting a Back to School Enforcement program throughout the City. To make this year’s Back to School safe and secure for both our children and motorists alike, the department is asking for everyone’s help.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 8, Traffic Bureau personnel will be deployed at school zones citywide to increase visibility and conduct enforcement at these locations. Motor officers will be deployed during both the morning drop-off and afternoon release times. Patrol officers will also increase their presence around schools.

Though some may not believe it, back to school is a very exciting time for our children, especially the younger kids! It is important that our children and parents understand the hazards

our children face during the school year.

Tips for Parents Prepare your child for travel to and from school, whether by school bus or walking, by ensuring if at all possible that they never travel alone. If they are riding the bus, make sure you watch your child as they walk to the bus stop and keep an eye on them until they are safely on the bus. An adult should also be waiting near the bus stop when the children return home.

If walking to school, remember there is safety in numbers.

Children should never walk to school alone! Speak with your neighbors and identify those children in your neighborhood who walk to school and form an alliance! One neighbor, again if at all possible and perhaps even in a rotation, should keep an eye on the youngsters as they walk to school or catch the bus.

telephones these days. The cell phone can be an extremely useful tool for our children if an emergency situation occurs.

Cell phones allow the kids to call for help when needed and to communicate with their parents.

Unfortunately, cell phones also create a distraction for our children. Texting, talking on the phone with friends, and even playing games keep our children from paying attention to their surroundings and this makes them vulnerable to strangers and traffic hazards alike. Parents should warn their children of these hazards and restrict casual cell phone use when traveling to and from school, even on the school bus.

Traffic Hazards: Neighborhood streets, crosswalks, and school crossings pose the most danger to our children when traveling to and from school. Children should be told to pay extra attention when traveling to and from school, even if there are crossing guards present. Crossing guards, those who volunteer their time to help keep our children safe, may have a difficult time attempting to control vehicle traffic and the children they are trying to protect at the same time.

Children should be told to obey the directives of the crossing guards at all times.

Parents need to use a “reasonableness test” by asking these questions: • Can your child, regardless of his or her age, act reasonably under the circumstances?

• Is your child mature enough to know what to do in an emergency?

• If there is a fire, is your child mature enough to get out of the house?

• Is he or she mature enough to get other children out of the house?

Key points for parents to share with kids who are staying home alone: Keep the doors locked.

• Do not open the door for or talk to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, and the visit has been preapproved by the parents or guardians.

• Never tell anyone who calls that you’re home by yourself.

Before leaving your child home alone, ensure there is a trusted neighbor or friend who knows the child is home alone and that the child can call if they just feel afraid or uncomfortable.

And, of course, ensure your child knows how to reach you and how to make an emergency call if necessary!

These simple rules and tips should assist us in keeping our children safe not only during the school year, but at all times!

While visiting San Diego I thought I would spend my time wisely – in pursuit of the “perfect wave.” That’s right, I’m looking for that surreal phenomenon that has caused many a surfer to “drop out” of the real world, searching the globe for that one breathless wall of water, like none other, that takes you on the ride of your life. After coming back to the same beach year after year and wondering what the “real deal” is about surfing, I think I have finally discovered something here – it’s not the wave, it’s all about the ride.

Who would have guessed that a bunch of surfers with sun-bleached hair, donning wetsuits have figured out the true meaning of life? Surfing might be a metaphor for how we live our lives. It’s not how high, far, or fast you go – it’s that one-heck-of-a-journey that matters. It’s about an ordinary person being able to capture an extraordinary moment while

flying with a wave.

The “perfect wave,” is a combination of adrenalin, huge tides, timing, and luck. The largest wave may not carry you far, unless you are positioned just right. You have to paddle out in front of the wave, get picked up so you can glide over the top and “run with it” until you are flying on water. It also helps to be able to stay on your board. You could be out in the water every day for a week and maybe get one great ride.

While at the beach, I am acutely aware that the younger you are, the faster you can learn how to surf. My grandsons have easily mastered the art of boogie boarding and have graduated to the long boards. I keep struggling to stand up on the board without immediately falling off, but a grandboy offers this encouragement. “You’re a Grandma – don’t worry, it just takes longer.” Yes, it does.

I have bumped into (literally) quite a few Arizonans while practicing my surfing skills. In fact, the entire Pacific Ocean is filled with “Zonies” (as the locals lovingly call us). However, if you look out further from the shore and see a group of surfers congregating in their wet suits, carefully selecting which wave to “take on,” chances are these are not casual visitors. They paddle out too far, too close to the pier,

too bold to care whether the lifeguards are out and too early in the morning and too late at night to qualify as recreational surfers. They are a serious lot, whose quest for the perfect wave is never ending.

Maybe that’s what’s wrong with all of us living in the desert.

We don’t have an ocean close by! We’re missing out on one of life’s great adventures – finding that special wave. When so much in our world is imperfect, stressful, complicated, busy and hectic, the simplicity of running into the ocean with a board under your arm has got to be good for the soul. Imagine swimming out to a distant spot, then waiting for that iridescent blue wall of water, concentrating on getting out in front of it and being lifted to new heights as you ride into shore. No worries or harsh reality can reach you when you’ve caught the “perfect wave.” It’s just you and the roar of the ride.

I am back in Arizona now. No beach in sight. But when I’m particularly hot and tired, I will fix my gaze to the west. I know there’s a huge ocean waiting for me. In the meantime, Dear Readers, let’s make waves and “sea” life’s beauty.

But the two converge at a critical connection: protection. The safety gear worn by football players has the same purpose as a seat belt – help the wearer survive a violent collision.

So, it’s no surprise that the Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Cardinals left tackle and Captain Jared Veldheer have partnered to promote the importance of wearing a seat belt with the Seat belts. For life. campaign. On Arizona roadways in 2015, there were 258 unrestrained occupant fatalities, which accounts for 29 percent of the people killed in traffic crashes that year. Lack of seat belt use is annually one of the leading factors in traffic deaths.

“I wouldn’t play football without wearing a helmet and shoulder pads, and I won’t drive my truck without wearing a seat belt,” Veldheer said. “Being safe is being smart.”

Who’s afraid of the dark?

It’s a fear that still motivates a genre of writers and filmmakers to create all manner of ghost, monster, stalker, demon that are living under the bed, inside the closet, or outside the front door.

It motivated director David F. Sandberg to make one of the best short films in some time, a film that functions on the simple premise of lights on and lights off. “Lights Out” was the name of the short film and remains the name of the feature length studio film hitting theaters this weekend. And it’s sure to make a whole group of people think twice before they turn the lights out.

Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is a young boy living with his mother Sophie (Maria Bello), but everything isn’t all right.

Whenever Martin turns off the lights, a shadowy creature appears; when he turns the lights on, it disappears. Every time he does this, the creature gets closer and closer. This leads to Martin keeping the lights on and not sleeping while his mother continues to grow more distant and more consumed by her depression.

After Martin falls asleep in class, and his mother does not respond to calls to pick him up, his older sister Rebecca (Theresa Palmer) gets involved.

Rebecca does not have a good relationship with her mother and wants to keep Martin away from her. Unfortunately, this does not work out and Martin returns home with his mother and the closing grasp of the shadowy creature that lives in the dark.

If you are a horror movie fan, there isn’t much here that you haven’t already seen, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is the kind of horror film that many people will love because it incorporates much of the same material that makes horror fun for general audiences, especially those that love a summer scare. “Lights Out” is a mix of effective jump scares; it offers a story that doesn’t hide the twists and turns that are coming up,

and it provides an atmosphere that continuously plays with the expectations of the viewer. Still, while these techniques work very well within this specific film (the 80 minute running time helps immensely), they are also the reasons why the film quickly becomes a monotonous caricature of other films.

Again, this technique is nothing new in horror. Influence is important in keeping the genre fresh and finding new creative ways to make familiar material unique. The strongest influence for “Lights Out” is the simple scary movie premise of the fear of the dark, and director David F. Sandberg – kudos to the production company for letting the creator of the short film direct the feature film – shows some accomplished skill in setting up a scare. A scene with a police officer shooting a gun at the creature is especially amusing, and there are more scenes that are equally fun to watch.

Unfortunately, the script is filled with head-shaking character clichés and unoriginal setups that grow increasingly dull as the film progresses. As the origin unravels, the film progresses into a third act that loses the entire earned atmosphere and effective

frights that it incorporated early in the film. While there is nothing wrong with offering an explanation in a horror film, sometimes it’s better to keep the monster in the dark, to let the monster retain some of the power that it holds over the story. “Lights Out” doesn’t do this and all the time spent crafting such a good monster is lost, taking with it all the scary strength. It’s unfortunate because there is a tremendous amount of quality material that could have been utilized to deepen the fear imposed by the creature. Aspects associated with maternal qualities, the connection to mental illness, and the maturing child in peril are all places the script could have emphasized to provide the film with good structure without having to explain the monster.

“Lights Out” is the kind of horror film that many genre fans love to watch, and it’s also the kind of horror film that many genre fans will be indifferent about, if not outright dislike.

Still, there is a place for wellhoned scares that serve no other purpose than to make someone jump out of their seat. And there is something to be said about a horror film that makes you, even for a small moment, question turning off the lights.

Deputy Winfrey’s supervisors commented that he is a valuable and productive member of the Partner Against Narcotics Trafficking (PANT) task force and YCSO K-9 Team. His prior narcotics detective experience, coupled with his work ethic and motivation, has made him a highly valued and productive

This contact resulted in the seizure of several pounds of Heroin and Cocaine as well as 14 pounds of pure powdered fentanyl. This seizure was confirmed as one of the largest fentanyl seizure in the United States for the year 2015.

Deputy Winfrey’s hard work and effort have helped to make Yavapai County and Arizona a safer place. Deputy Winfrey also acknowledged the hard work and dependability of his trusted canine partner, ‘Gemma’, a German Shepherd.

Yes, maybe Steinbeck is right, there are many of us who are absolutely “nuts” about our dogs. Local artist Alisann Smookler embraces our passion for our “best friends” and elevates it to new heights with her brilliantly rendered canine portraits. Each work electrifies the generous spirit of those

“beings of light” that share our lives.

Alisann’s artistic talents were acknowledged early in her life.

She won her first art contest, with a charcoal rendering of a vase and cup, at the age of 10.

Her 6th grade teacher recognized Alisann’s unique artistic talent and encouraged her to think seriously about studying art.

Taking this encouragement to heart, Alisann enrolled in art classes during high school and continued study at the El Paso Museum of Art. During her time attending museum classes, the instructors were many of the prominent painting artists of the time, providing a unique perspective on the world of professional painting techniques.

Inevitably, Alisann went on to major in Art Education at the University of Texas-El Paso.

Life has a way of taking hold of our destiny. Alisann found

she needed to set her art studies aside, for many years, to raise her children as a single mom and work outside the home. In 2013, after being diagnosed with CNS Lymphoma, Brain Cancer, Alisann once again turned to her creative center for emotional support and relaxation.

Instinctively, she knew painting would be one way to enhance her healing during the posteffects of the brain surgery and whole brain radiation. Alisann shares, “When I became ill, the first thing I went to was my art, it was an escape to find myself again. Initially, I painted dog portraits, a subject I had always wanted to paint. I quickly realized I needed to learn new techniques for painting my canine subjects. This presented me with a new opportunity and supported the continued recovery process.”

In May 2015, Alisann saw a television program about “Coloring Books for Adults.”

She was excited about the healing prospects of coloring, so she went on the hunt for a dog-themed coloring book. It didn’t take long before Alisann realized there weren’t any!

Being a creative and imaginative individual, Alisann took up the task of creating her own coloring images. In the space of a year, she had hand-drawn and published 11 coloring books for adults with dog themes, such as Who Framed My Dog, done in the style of well-known artists; Love Puppies, with the theme

Alisann understands and embraces the healing effects of coloring and engaging in creative expression as part of the healing process. Today, Alisann happily recounts, “I am three years in remission and love creating my art every day. Abee, our Catahoula rescue pup, is always at my side, inspiring me through her love to continue creating dog art!” Alisann is dedicated to sharing her passion for “art healing” with others.

Sonoran Arts League to host Pet Adoption Days at the Gallery at el Pedregal its own. Rescue Pals received its 501c3 tax-exempt status in 2013 and became a non-profit organization. In 2013, about 100 rescue dogs that had been boarded at Pal’s Inn Pet Resort found a new home.

The gallery is a unique collaboration between the nonprofit Sonoran Arts League and The Boulders Resort, which provides the large space in support of art education and awareness. The art exhibited changes every four months, and all work is juried.

In addition to featured work that is on exhibit and for sale, the Gallery at el Pedregal includes a youth art exhibit, a veteran exhibit, and a gift shop.

The gallery is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is free.

SCOTTSDALE – Sonoran Arts League is partnering with animal rescue groups Paws & Claws and Rescue Pals for Pet Adoption Days at the Gallery at el Pedregal on Saturday, Aug.13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The adoption event will take place at the gallery, located on the second floor of el Pedregal, 34505 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale.

The public is invited to peruse the art at the Gallery, provided by Sonoran Arts League members, while meeting and interacting with a variety of dogs and cats who will be up for adoption.

Patrons will receive a free sketch of any animal they adopt during Pet Adoption Days. Additional pet adoption days are planned for Sept. 17 and Oct. 8, with other animal rescue groups set to participate.

Paws & Claws was founded

in 2006 and rescues all breeds of dogs and cats. Animals are found and rescued from the streets, taken from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, or surrendered by their owners. The pets are then placed in caring foster homes while they wait to be adopted.

Rescue Pals began when three women were training to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer 2010 walk together. In order to train, they approached Pal’s Inn Pet Resort in Fountain Hills and asked if they could walk the rescue dogs that were boarded there.

Through fundraising efforts, they have been able to assist with some of the medical costs of their pals and have helped with boarding costs so that Pal’s Inn Pet Resort or Rescue Pals could take in rescues of
