NORTH VALLEY – August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month. The Daisy Mountain Fire Department will hold six

drowning awareness events this month to reinforce how vital it is to always watch kids around water. The events will provide

information on water safety guidelines. In a release from DMFD regarding Drowning Impact Awareness Month, it was noted that, according to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, “child drownings are a leading cause of injury and death. Wildfire burning south of Mayer CLEATOR – A 380-acre wildfire sparked by lightning is burning approximately five miles southwest of Mayer and three miles northwest of Cleator. Smoke is visible on the I-17 outside the north valley, on the Highway 69, and throughout the surrounding communities in the Mayer area. The SA Hill Fire was detected on Aug. 2 and was then estimated at 50 acres. It has since grown to 380 acres and, as of Tuesday, was 0 percent contained. The Prescott National Forest News Service noted in a release that dry weather conditions are contributing to the fire activity and growth. The fire is fueled by brush, pinyon pine, juniper, and grass.

As of Tuesday, Prescott Nation Forest firefighters were working on securing a boundary line on the south and east sides of the fire and scouting the north and west sides for containment options. Current fire resources assigned include two engines, one Type-3 helicopter, two fuels crews, one air attack, and one dozer. According to the News Service release, the surrounding rugged, rocky terrain is limiting access to fight the SA Hill Fire. Residents can keep updated on the SA Hill Fire and other fires in the area throughout wildfire season through the Prescott National Forest Fire Information Hotline at (928) 777-5799 or the Prescott National Forest Web site, www.fs.fed.us/r3/prescott.

Merrill Gardens officially breaks ground; facility to open next year ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

ANTHEM – Over 100 people attended a July 29 groundbreaking ceremony for the new retirement facility Merrill Gardens. The audience sampled food from Merrill Gardens’ chefs and examined site plans and amenities information for the new facility. Several audience members also participated in the groundbreaking, digging with souvenir golden shovels that they took home if desired. The Merrill Gardens facility has a planned completion date of summer 2016. Reservations are scheduled to start being accepted in the next several months.

Bill Pettit, President R.D. Merrill Company (parent company of Merrill Gardens); Chad Lorentz, Principal, Urbal Architecture; Lew Rees, Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce; and Tim Fyke, Anthem Community Council President, all spoke at the groundbreaking. Rees noted that Merrill Gardens will be employing over 60 people, calling the new facility a “vital business engine.” Council president Fyke noted that having this facility here would help keep families together and that residents had been enthusiastic about the idea.
