APS to construct new substation near 43rd Avenue ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

ANTHEM – A new APS substation will soon be constructed on the west side of Anthem, east of 43rd Ave. The Daisy Mountain Substation is scheduled to be finished by spring of next year, in order to be ready for the high demand during the summer season. Kendra Lee, APS Franchises & Technical Services representative, noted that this new substation will help enhance reliability in the area and support future growth as needed. Right now, APS is working on the architectural elements for the wall, according to Lee.

Foothills Food Bank holding ribbon cutting, Sept. 24 CAVE CREEK – The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is holding a ribbon cutting/ open house on Saturday, Sept. 24, starting at 10 a.m. This event will celebrate the expansion of the food bank. “Foothills Food Bank extended the front of the building south to allow for more warehousing in the main building,” said food bank director Pam DiPietro in a September media release. “Our reception and packing area moved to the new addition allowing more space for foodstuff storage for our clients.”

No injuries sustained to pets or people from Claws N’ Paws fire NEW RIVER – Pet grooming business Claws N’ Paws was damaged by a fire on Labor Day. Daisy Mountain Fire Department responded to an emergency call on Sept. 5 from another tenant in the Riverside Plaza on the frontage road. According to DMFD’s social media release, no animals were in the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported from the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office detectives. According to MCSO Public Information Officer Courtney

ANTHEM – Eleven-yearold Jordan “Jojo” Calderon is a caring, kindhearted girl who is working on collecting toys to donate to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She knows how much the PCH kids go through and how much they need support because she’s been there many times herself. Jordan is undergoing treatment for brain cancer. She and her mother travel to Los Angeles monthly so that Jordan can receive specialized care. On Sept. 19-21, Jordan will
