ANTHEM – In 2000, Anthem and the surrounding communities celebrated the opening of Safeway, the first grocery store in the area. Get ready to re-welcome Safeway to the neighborhood, as the store is set to return to its former location at 3655 W. Anthem Way. The Albertsons Safeway Inc. corporation has officially confirmed that Safeway is reopening. Nancy Keane, Albertsons Safeway Inc. Public Affairs and Government Relations representative, emailed The Foothills Focus a statement

CAVE CREEK – The Cave Creek Town Council scheduled a special work session for Sept. 26 to continue discussing and working out the details necessary for delivering water to west-side residents, after hearing recommendations from the town’s attorney, town manager and members of the water advisory board during last week’s council meeting. The biggest problem the town council and engineers face is many areas of the town will see a significant increase in water pressure, which could cause damage to homes because pipes could burst under the added

The added water pressure is necessary so the town can pump the water to the west-side of town and into the Saddle Mountain, Desert Hills and Cahava Springs area, according to the Town Engineer, Dave Peterson. “If we had at pump station at the northeast corner of 24th and Joy Ranch, then everything could be normal pressure of 70 to 90 [psi] on high end, but that would cost money, probably $200,000 to $300,000,” Peterson said at Monday’s meeting. However, Town Manager Peter Jankowski objected to the

On the issues: Candidates share views during forum in Anthem ELIZABETH MEDORA STAFF

ANTHEM – Nineteen candidates running for a variety of Arizona offices answered questions and offered information on their backgrounds and views at a Sept. 14 candidate forum that was sponsored by the Anthem Community Council and the New River/Desert Hills Community Association. Each candidate made an opening statement, then participated in a Q&A session for the office they’re seeking. Congressional District 4 candidate Mikel Weisser spoke first and said in his opening

statement that the future needs to be “more culturally diverse” and “politically progressive”. Congressional District 4 encompasses the Black Canyon City area and stretches out to Tortilla Flat to the east and past Wickenburg to the west. Arizona Corporation Commission made opening statements next. This Corporation Commission race is considered one to watch this year, as the commission will be voting on some major cases, including for APS, in coming months. ‘Dark money’ donations have been at the forefront of discussion about this race, as the FBI has

Bob Burns, as a response after Burns filed subpoenas to order APS to turn over campaign contribution documentation. ACC candidate Tom Chabin recounted his school board, Board of Supervisors, and legislative experience for his candidacy, then brought up the dark money concerns. “This is a critical race,” he said, referencing “dark money” donors, which he said have campaigned to “elect the commission they want and they got it. They got it!” During Q&A, Chabin was
