A scourge of mosquitoes El i z a b eth M ed o r a
NORTH VALLEY – A group of mosquitoes is called a scourge – fitting for the discomfort and illness they can bring. The wet weather of the last month has left enough standing water for a bad mosquito season throughout Maricopa County. “We are experiencing a very busy mosquito season with all the standing water as a result of the recent storms/ rain,” said Johnny Diloné, Media & Community Relations Manager of Maricopa County Environmental Services. “In just two days (Sept. 15 and Sept. 16) our Vector Control Division received over 1,000 mosquito-related complaints. We expect the week of Sept. 14-21 to end up being the most busy or at least one of our most busy weeks ever.” The good news is the majority of the mosquitoes the county’s Vector Control are seeing are ‘floodwater mosquitoes,’ which Vector Control says are not known to carry any diseases. These mosquitoes reproduce rapidly in standing water. They also fly during the day.

ANTHEM – When staring at the top of the division standings, one would see the Boulder Creek Jaguars up there. They are off to a fast start (4-0), thanks in part to new coach Brandon Willard. Willard has the Jaguars playing hard and believing in themselves. Thanks to a big week three victory on the road at Desert Vista, Willard was awarded the Arizona Cardinals High School Football Coach of the Week Award. On Friday, Sept. 19, amongst Boulder Creek faculty, students, band members, cheerleaders, and his football team, Willard was given his award by Cardinals cheerleaders, mascot Big Red, and a team representative.

Local businesses note impact of uncertain weather conditions Alex Stevenson
NORTH VALLEY – As Arizona’s monsoon season draws to a close, its impact – whether little or large – on local North Valley businesses is apparent. Hurricane Norbert’s dissipated effects were certainly felt throughout the valley on Sept. 8, a day that, according to Weather.com, hosted the highest recorded rainfall ever further south at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with an astonishing 3.29 inches. Be it an extensive storm with flash flooding or a grisly, rainy day – potential customers certainly take the weather into account before they go out and patronize local shops. “While it wouldn’t necessarily deter me from keeping
plans, I’d definitely rather stay at home with a book on wet days,” said local Anthem resident Carly Stackhouse. Anna McGowan, a manager at Swankys Boutique off West Anthem Way, held a similar view. The storm on Sept. 8 definitely “slowed business down,” with only a few potentials stopping in. McGowan notices the same sort of pattern on other bad weather days, as most people “stay home when it’s really rainy outside.” Chris Burris, partowner of Desert Donuts located in Tramonto off of West Carefree Highway and U.S. Interstate 17, had mixed feelings about the rain, and its effects on his family’s business.
