BLACK CANYON CITY – The VFW Post 1796 in Black Canyon City is nearly 40 years old, and in the next few months, the building will be getting renovated and updated. The VFW in Black Canyon City received its charter in 1968, and the building was constructed about a decade later. The building hasn’t been renovated since it was constructed. Improvements will include new windows and doors, a speaker system, a renovated ceiling, a new tile floor, and updated

ANTHEM – Two Anthem businesses were robbed last week. Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office detectives are investigating the cases; it’s not yet known if the robberies are connected. Take-and-bake pizza restaurant Papa Murphy’s, located in the Anthem Marketplace plaza, was robbed by a suspect described as a white male teen on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 9 p.m., according to MCSO. “We believe an 18-year-old male wearing a blue bandana

came in and took some cash from the safe and left in what’s described as a sports car in the direction of the freeway,” said MCSO Detective Doug Matteson. Matteson said the robber was armed with a black handgun; the suspect gained entry into the building through an unlocked door just after closing. The robber took about $200 in cash. On Sept. 1, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in the Anthem Crossroads plaza, was robbed at 10:30 p.m.

Carefree, Cave Creek elect Local teen serving community mayors and Councilmembers through Governor’s Youth Commission TARA ALATORRE STAFF

NORTH VALLEY – Ernie Bunch clinched the Cave Creek mayoral seat, which has been occupied since 1999 by the town’s first citizens-elected and current, Mayor Vincent Francia, receiving over 57 percent of vote in the primary elections last week, according the Maricopa County Recorder’s office. The towns of Carefree and Cave Creek each had six council member seats and the mayoral seats open in the primary elections last Tuesday, although the Carefree mayoral

seat was uncontested with the only candidate the incumbent, Mayor Les Peterson. There were also two voter referendum initiatives presented to Cave Creek voters: proposition 491, which would extends and alternative expenditure limit for the town, and proposition 492, which would approve the 2016 town general plan. Over 63 percent of Cave Creek voters rejected proposition 492, essentially vetoing the 2016 general plan that the town

ANTHEM – Anthem teen Nicole Sherwood is making a difference in the community and in the entire state as part of the Governor’s Youth Commission.
