In Remembrance: Memorial Day ceremony to be held at Anthem Veterans Memorial ANTHEM – The community is invited to honor fallen heroes at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 29, at the Anthem Veterans Memorial. ‘A Day of Remembrance’ honors the service and sacrifice of veterans who have fallen while serving our nation.

This year’s ceremony will mark a change of time for this annual event, with the ceremony taking place at 9 a.m., an hour earlier than in the past.

Arrest made in Vistancia armed robbery investigation PEORIA – On May 18, at approximately 1 p.m., Peoria Police responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Vistancia Mountain Vista Club, located at 29701 North Sunrise Point.

Officers learned that the victim had set up a meeting via an online marketplace to sell a cell phone. The suspect entered the victim’s vehicle and pointed a handgun at him before taking the cell phone and running away.

At that time, officers were unable to locate the suspect.Officers scoured the

area, followed numerous leads and were able to locate video surveillance.

According to Peoria PD, it was the combination of hard work by the officers and detectives along with numerous tips from the community that helped Peoria detectives in identifying the suspect.

On the afternoon of May 19, Peoria Police Detectives arrested the suspect, 24-year-old Shaquille Raglin. The gun used in the incident and the stolen cell phone were recovered.

Raglin is expected to face

charges for armed robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and driving on a suspended license. This case is still under investigation and charges may be added or amended.

Peoria PD is not seeking any additional suspects at this time.

The department thanks everyone who assisted with getting Raglin into custody.

Teachers speak out about working conditions, and they’re not happy KENDRA PENNINGROTH CRONKITE NEWS

PHOENIX – For the past decade, the vast majority of Arizona counties have faced a teacher shortage at the beginning of the school year, and as school districts head into the summer, many teachers expect more of the same.

And they’re not surprised.

A Public Insight Network query asking the state’s schoolteachers why they think Arizona cannot attract or keep teachers brought an outpouring of responses and one thing quickly became very clear: The Arizona teachers who responded to the query are not happy.

In more than 160 responses to the seven-question, short-answer query for Cronkite News, teachers complained about being overworked, over-evaluated and undercompensated. They felt underappreciated by parents and legislators and run roughshod over by administrators who they feel are underqualified and ill-equipped. Joe Thomas, the president of Arizona Education Association, said the responses look a lot like responses AEA has collected from members in surveys it has done in the past.

“It’s an accurate understanding of the current reality of public school teachers,” Thomas said of the PIN responses.

The query was published on Cronkite News’ website and then shared on the Arizona Education Association’s Facebook page.

Some responses featured expletives, others were written in all capital letters and littered with exclamation points.

Several respondents wrote pages’ worth of statistical explanations for their discontent, and others outlined very personal issues they had with their districts, schools, colleagues or students.

Cronkite News reached out to at least half of the educators who completed the query, but many were unwilling to talk to a reporter on the record. Others who were contacted had used a fake name on the questionnaire. Almost all said that they feared losing their jobs if they said anything negative about their school or district.

A significant number of teachers did think there was disconnect between administrators and teaching staff – and respondents said it was negatively impacting their work environments and students.

Some longtime educators said that while student behavior is growing increasingly worse, parents’ and administrators’

willingness to support school policies is simultaneously decreasing.

Some wrote that as state standards have become stricter, they have lost control of their teaching style. Others said they feel like teachers spend too much time following administrative protocol that takes away from their classroom preparation, and often has them working out-of-contract hours.

“They are running schools like a business and not a place of learning,” said Kirk Hinsey, an educator of 31 years, in his PIN response.

They feel that their workload and classroom sizes continue to grow – but their compensation does not. According to the Arizona Department of Education, the average teacher salary in January 2016 was less than $40,000.

Salaries vary from district to district, but many teachers reported salary freezes and no sense that they will advance on the career ladder, or pay scale, regardless of their experience.

The most resounding sentiment was that teachers are doing too much to be paid as little as they make.

A spokesman for Superintendent Diane Douglas said that is a concern for the Arizona Department of Education, which is working to make teaching a more reasonable profession.

“Right now the best way to get more teachers in the classroom is to pay them … if you pay them, they will teach,” Stefan Swiat said.

But some teachers noted more emotional reasons for the shortage and their own discontent. Matthew Lentz has been an educator for 23 years, and he said the state government is responsible for the teacher shortage.

“There is a shortage because there is a mentality of the state government to discredit, demoralize, and de-fund public education,” Lentz said in his response.

Many respondents said they consider new state education legislation, like Proposition 123 and voucher program expansion, to be a slap in the face. Prop 123, approved narrowly by voters last year, would dedicate $3.5 billion to education over 10 years, but it leaves it to local schools to decide how to spend the money, which critics say will still leave Arizona trailing most states.

Melissa Girmsheid said in her response that every time legislative decisions regarding education are made without teachers, “it chips away at the professionalism of the teacher profession in Arizona.”

Arizona continues to face a shortage of teachers, and a recent query of classroom teachers found that many Arizona teachers feel underappreciated and overworked.

The AEA’s Thomas said qualified teachers exist – they just have no interest in working in Arizona schools in their current state.

Thomas said that Arizona has more than 90,000 active teacher certifications, and just 50,000 to 55,000 teaching positions at any one time. While some of those certifications belong to administrators, or to people who earned online degrees while living in another state, there is not actually a “teacher shortage,” he said, but the disrespect, low pay and lack of support lead to vacancies in the classroom.

Misty Arthur, director of the Arizona Federation of Teachers, did not respond to the query but offered many of the same concerns in a telephone interview.

She said she does not anticipate the teacher shortage to improve this fall because administrators are underqualified and ill-equipped.

“Teachers are not feeling supported administratively in the classroom,” Arthur said. “They’re losing control, so they’re leaving the classroom.”

PEORIA – Firefighter of the Year, Meritorious Service Award, and the Medal of Honor were just a few of the awards presented during the annual Peoria Fire-Medical awards ceremony on May 19.

More than 100 firefighters and their families gathered for the annual presentation that honors outstanding service and performances during the past year. Though all firefighters put their lives on the line and perform honorably and bravely every day, the purpose of the awards is to recognize individuals and fire companies who go above and beyond the typical call of duty.

Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat, as well as members of the City Council, the City Manager, and Deputy City Managers were also in attendance at the ceremony held at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The department’s most prestigious award, the John Valentine Award, is for the individual that is a model for the rest of the department. This person lives the department’s core values of Team, Trust, Efficiency, and Professionalism.

This year’s recipient of the John Valentine Award was Captain and Paramedic Hunter Clare.

AZGF Commission approves proposed boating rules NORTH VALLEY – The Arizona Game and Fish Commission recently approved several boating and watercraft regulation changes aimed at increasing customer service and public safety on Arizona’s waterways.

The commission approved the changes in April, amending the state’s Article 5 rules, which outline boating and water sports regulations and fees. The proposed changes will now be considered by the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council on June 6 and, if approved, will become effective Aug. 5.

The proposed changes were recommended as part of a legally required five-year review of the department’s administrative rules. For more information or to view the complete list of proposed Article 5 changes, visit www.azgfd.com/agency and click on “Rulemaking.”

The proposed changes include requiring a signature be notarized/witnessed when the seller is not listed as the owner on the current registration or the signature of the buyer or seller is in question; allowing owners to obtain a duplicate watercraft registration/decal online; increasing the valid timeframe for a temporary certificate; requiring liveries to affix a placard on the watercraft

indicating the business name and phone number; requiring towing companies to notify the owner/lienholder that they have taken possession of a vessel within 15 days of obtaining the information from the department; and authorizing a third-party vendor to process new watercraft registrations, transfers, renewals and duplicate registrations.

New safety regulations include requiring a wake surfer to wear a personal floatation device and that an operator ensure an observer is watching if a person is being towed behind the watercraft and/or surfing a wake created by the watercraft, as well as prohibiting teak surfing, which is pulling a person from a vessel’s swim platform.

The following fee changes are also proposed: watercraft transfer fee to $13; duplicate decal and certificate number fee to $8; dealer certificate of number fee to $20; establish an abandoned/unreleased watercraft application fee of $100; and transfer of ownership of a towed watercraft application fee to $100.

Butterfly Wonderland unveils new Rainforest Reptile exhibit SCOTTSDALE – Butterfly Wonderland will introduce their newest exhibit, Rainforest Reptiles, on Memorial Day weekend.

Guests can enter the new area following their journey through the Chrysalis Emergence Gallery, the Butterfly Conservatory, and the Spineless Giants area. I almost got arrested. Okay, or possibly taken into a windowless room with two frighteningly big, uniformed men who never smile. Yes, I am the person who tried to “break all the rules” while going through security at the Portland airport. And those TSA agents were not real friendly. My daughter, Tammy and I went to Portland for a few days so we could stand on a soggy beach in the cold drizzly rain to watch my grandson, Sean get married.

Deputy Chief Rustenburg related that she started in MCSO District 4 as a deputy, worked in other areas, then came back to District 4 as a lieutenant. After serving District 4 for several years, Rustenburg was recently transferred to Major Crimes and was soon thereafter promoted.

“I was there a week, and I was told I was being promoted to Deputy Chief,” Rustenburg said.

I couldn’t help but notice three TSA agents staring at my purse as it went through the X-ray conveyor belt and then it was pulled off to the side. Five minutes passed. I wait. Then a stern looking agent calls over to me and asks, “Do you have something in your purse that can harm me?” Stunned, I just said, “Of course not!” Then he has a discussion with another TSA agent and my purse is set inside a bin. For ten minutes.

Hey, I am about to miss my plane! My cell phone is in my purse. I cannot call my daughter (she is frantically waiting at the gate). A group of pilots were coming through the TSA checkpoint and I said, “Help, my purse is being held hostage.”

A very kind pilot tried to intercede, but the TSA agent pointed a finger at him and yelled, “This is my job. Stay out of it.”

Oh Lordy help me.

Finally, two big burly agents carried my purse over to a side table and told me to follow them. One said, “You have a weapon in your purse.” I blurted out, “No way!” He then said, “You have a knife in your

purse.” “I do not carry knives in my purse,” I said confidently.

With that, he took my big satchel of a purse and dumped all the contents out into a huge plastic tub. And there, to my horror, came tumbling out a white dinner napkin tightly rolled around a spoon, fork… and butter knife. Then the TSA agent picked up the knife and asked, “What is this?”

Yes, I am guilty as charged.

I tried to (weakly) explain that I was at a wedding dinner last night and my two-year-old grandbaby was running around (wild) and taking the napkins and must have dropped one into my purse. Glaring at me, he said, “Well you lied about a weapon and you also steal silverware.” Ouch.

I made my flight and saw the pilot who had tried to help. When I told him what happened, he shook his head and laughed, “Screwdrivers are fine to carry on…but not a dull knife.” Flying? Be safe, Dear Readers, and be sure to know what is in your bag.

Commander for District 4 was recently selected; Captain Steve Bailey will now be serving as District 4 Commander.

Rustenburg’s background experience is varied, and the diverse roles she has filled makes her well-suited for the responsibilities of being a Deputy Chief. She noted that, in addition to her work as District 4 Commander, she has worked in central investigation, the major crimes division, and the court implementation division, as well as managing detectives, working in internal affairs, and serving as a public information officer.

“I’ve been in a lot of different areas, which makes me wellrounded,” Rustenburg said.

District 4 is sad to see Rustenburg go, but she may be back as Deputy Chief in the future, if she switches the districts that she oversees. In the meantime, residents will still be

seeing her often, as she has lived in the north valley for many years and she loves the area and District 4 in general, where she says she “started out as a baby deputy.”

North valley residents may remember when Rustenburg learned of her new role as District Chief; Sheriff Paul Penzone surprised her with the announcement during a town hall meeting in Anthem on April 14. Rustenburg received a special request to stop by the meeting, which she did, and Penzone surprised her with the good news, as she was surrounded by north valley residents who knew her and respected her dedication to her work.

“It was the best delivery,” Rustenburg said of the surprise announcement. “It was there, with the people that I loved and worked with for so long, and for them to share that moment with me, it was really special.”

Rural Metro Fire Department crew saves orphaned ravens gently removed and handed one by one down to Firefighter Grimstad on the ladder below.

Rural Metro Public Information Officer Shawn Gilleland noted that Rural Metro routinely conducts animal rescues, such as pets that are trapped in fences or stuck inside walls. Crews have rescued a horse from a canal, as well.

CAVE CREEK – Rural Metro crews from Station 825 in Cave Creek teamed up with Wild at Heart Raptor Rescue last week for an unusual rescue: saving the lives of five orphaned young ravens.

Recently, crews also rescued a cat in a perilous situation; the cat climbed a tree during a house fire and was in danger when the tree caught fire.

Thanks to the help of Rural Metro and Wild at Heart, he baby ravens are safe and well. The ravens will have a new home at Wild at Heart Raptor Rescue.

were missing. The raven parents didn’t return, and the neighbors grew worried about the babies in the nest, as they could hear the frantic chirping of the young ravens as they grew more and more hungry. That was when they placed a call to local rescue Wild at Heart Raptor Rescue.

The ravens’ nest was located over 40 feet over the ground.

Due to the location of the nest, Wild at Heart requested Rural Metro’s assistance after being contacted by the homeowner, Rural Metro reported in a news release.

Using a 25-foot ladder, crew Captain Whelan climbed up into the tree below the nest. Once in the tree, he scaled the limb up to the nest. Peeking over the edge of the nest, he found five young ravens, with mouths open and outstretched necks, ready to eat and hungry enough to chew through his structure glove. MERRILL GARDENS continued from page 1

and staff helped 16 residents move in on the first day.

“We’re really happy to be here!” General Manager Krista Solomon said last week during a tour with Foothills Focus staff.

New residents are settling into their new space, putting out their welcome mats in front of their doors and decorating their apartments. The community’s amenities are being put to use, with the kitchen in full swing and activity rooms set up.

Move-in coordinator Jessica Iams described the enthusiasm of both staff and residents at the opening of the community, saying residents have been “excited to move in.”

Iams has worked in this field in the past, and she said she wanted to apply at Merrill Gardens as soon as she saw the building being constructed.

She’s been with Merrill

Gardens since January 2017, mapping out move-ins and helping manage the moving process for residents.

“It’s been exciting every step of the way, and especially as we were getting close [to moveins],” Iams said.

Merrill Gardens has a neighborhood atmosphere, with residents and staff greeting each other by name and stopping to chat. Small groups gather to lunch together, and activity groups are forming.

Marv Meyer and his wife recently moved into Merrill Gardens, and he says they “just love it.”

“Food is great, people are great! No complaints at all,” Meyer said, as he ate lunch in the bistro.

Meyer has been caring for his wife for the last five years. Now, at Merrill Gardens, she’s getting care in the memory care wing, and they still spend a lot of time together each day.

“We’re coming up on our 63rd anniversary,” Meyer related.

Meyer, who worked as a pilot in Chicago for over 40 years, moved to Surprise several years ago, and then moved to Anthem when Merrill Gardens opened. His son lives in Anthem, as well, and has been a frequent guest already.

Iams says she encourages potential residents to come over for an activity, like Friday night Happy Hour, with live music.

That way, those interested can get a feel for the community, meet residents and staff, and see how they like it.

CCUSD honors Inspire Excellence award winners SCOTTSDALE – The Cave Creek Unified School District held their ‘Inspire Excellence’ awards ceremony on May 18, at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. The Inspire Excellence Awards are the highest honor given to employees, community members, and volunteers of CCUSD. The Breath of the Wind SHEA STANFIELD ARTS COLUMNIST

It’s been said the horse is made from the breath of the wind, the beauty of the earth, and the soul of an angel. No one knows this as well as local veterinarian and artist Joerg Auer. Born in Chur, Switzerland, Joerg’s love of horses started at an early age with dreams of growing up to be a jockey, but as time passed it became very apparent he was going to literally “outgrow” his dream with a stature that would be too tall for the profession.

Yet, this did not deter Joerg from his love of drawing horses using a variety of media, pencil, pastel, pen and ink, and woodcarvings. While in college at the University of Zurich, his art teacher introduced him to etching in an effort to extend and enhance his study of drawing mediums. Eventually, sports and studies in veterinary medicine at the University of Zurich consumed most of Joerg’s time and art fell into the background.

During his time at the University, Joerg lived with a friend that imported the first American Quarter Horses into Switzerland. This provided hands-on experience for Joerg for learning how to properly care for horses and he was introduced to the Western style of riding. He loved it! During this time, the show “American Rodeo Far West” toured Europe. The group disbanded in Italy, where the livestock

was distributed throughout Europe. At this point, Joerg’s friend was able to acquire few of the better American Quarter Horses. In 1972, Joerg and his friend traveled to Italy to meet world-renowned sculptor Harry Jackson, who kept his studio and foundry in Camaiore, Italy.

He too had acquired one of the quarter horses and kept it at his studio. This vital connection and experience would fuel a lifelong interest in bronze sculpture for Joerg, depicting horses and western themes.

Once Joerg completed his degree in Veterinary school, he traveled to Scottsdale, AZ to spend time enjoying the American West and further his skills in the Western riding style.

He also assisted Dr. Wesley Lickfeldt at his Quartz Animal Veterinary Hospital. During this time, Dr. Lickfeldt and Joerg traveled to North Scottsdale, Carefree, and Cave Creek, tending to privately owned horses. Dr. Lickfeldt proved to be an important mentor and guide in the “tricks of the trade.”

During this time in Scottsdale, Joerg fell in love with the vast and diverse Sonoran Desert and the equestrian lifestyle. Following his time with Dr. Lickfeldt, Joerg went on to further his training as a research fellow in Columbia, MO for a year. He then moved on to Kennett Square, PA for two years as a surgery resident, followed by a faculty position in College Station, TX for 11 years. In 1982, while in Texas,

he passed his surgery board exams. Finally, in 1989, Joerg moved back to Zurich, Switzerland, reconnecting with his alma mater.

Joerg went on to build the Equine Department at the University of Zurich into a world-renowned specialty clinic and referral center for equine fracture treatments.

He returned to his drawing and illustrating, now equipped with a vast knowledge of equine anatomy. Joerg created illustrations for his publications and professional presentations.

In 2002, while combining a speaking engagement in San Diego with a holiday trip, Joerg, his wife Anita, and their son Renato visited friends in Cave Creek and purchased a house in Terravita. When Joerg retired in January of 2011, he and his wife Anita began to split their time 50/50 between their home in Lenzburg, Switzerland and Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2012, Joerg asked a friend, Swiss sculptor Andre Schwab, to help him create a bronze sculpture.

The result was a beautiful Gambel’s Quail. The following spring, in 2013, Joerg took a workshop from artist Curt Mattson entitled “Composition and the Horse” at the Scottsdale Artists School. For the first time, he began to look beyond his technical knowledge of horse anatomy into the beauty and grace of its elegant form.

Returning to Switzerland, Joerg was dedicated to

continuing his work in art.

He found a studio, about 15 minutes from his home, fully equipped for a wide variety of printmaking, etching, aquatint, lithography, etc. This was his opportunity to return to the craft of etching and aquatint he had started so many years before in college. Today, Joerg Auer’s art has been accepted into the juried exhibit “The Best and Brightest” at the Scottsdale Artists School 2014, 2015, and 2016. He was also accepted in the Mountain Oysters Art Show in Tucson, Arizona in 2017. He is a member of the Terravita Art League and the Sonoran Arts League where he exhibited, for the first time, in the annual Hidden In The Hills Studio Tour in November 2016.

Presently, Joerg has four bronzes on exhibit at the Sonoran Arts League El Pedregal Art Studio, seven pieces at the Terravita Desert Pavilion, and four at the Red Dot Gallery in Cave Creek.

Joerg also enjoys the challenge of sculpture consignments, two of his best known are “Lantinus”, the former first place world champion jumping horse and the second a sculpture “Were Dun Johnny” of a successful half-Arabian reining horse, depicted in a full stop with the exact saddle blanket of the owner and show saddle, minus the rider. Joerg Auer’s work both in bronze sculpture and etching displays a keen eye for detail and stunning knowledge of his subject matter.

Non-profits invited to take part in Shopping Extravaganza fundraiser ANTHEM – Outlets at Anthem invites local nonprofits to apply now to participate in the 2017 Shopping Extravaganza, a retail philanthropy event.

Nonprofit organizations looking to raise money are invited to apply now through June 1 to participate.

Nonprofits that participate in Shopping Extravaganza sell event tickets to their friends, families, stakeholders, and community partners. They are asked to sell at least 100 $25 event tickets before the event on Sept. 23. For every ticket sold, the nonprofit keeps $15.

Ticket holders are then invited to use their tickets for the oneday event, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., to receive exclusive discounts and offers, and a free lunch, as well as wine and chocolate tastings.

They are also eligible to win more than $30,000 in gift card prizes through various on-site prize drawings.

The Daisy Mountain Firefighters Charities has participated in this event for the past eight years. Last year, they raised almost $2,500 for their cause. The organization strives to help families in the community who are dealing with illness or tragedy.

“Being a part of this charitable event is an easy decision for our organization,” said Todd Micetich, board of Directors trustee, Daisy Mountain Firefighters Charities. “Year after year our stakeholders buy tickets from us because they know they are helping a good cause, they want to be part of a fun event and they want to support the businesses at the Outlets. It’s a win-win-win!”

The Outlets at Anthem provides all promotional materials and expertise to help organizations sell tickets and raise awareness about their own philanthropic cause. In 2016, the event helped raise more than $50,000. In the last 12 years, the event has raised $400,000 in charitable funds.

at Anthem, introduced the Shopping Extravaganza event in 2004 to give back to the community and support local charities. Since its inception, it has become a go-to charity shopping tradition for people throughout the Valley. It’s also a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season.

Our retail stores do a tremendous job of making sure there are worthwhile discounts and prizes for ticket holders, which is a big selling feature for charities offering tickets,” said Carrie Fortezzo, marketing and special events manager, Outlets at Anthem.

“The charities work hard to sell their tickets and we’re all so thankful to the community for the support they offer.”

Outlets at Anthem is currently accepting applications from 501(c)(3) designated groups who are interested in participating in this unique event. Qualifying organizations can submit applications to Carrie Fortezzo at cfortezzo@outletsanthem. com. There is no fee to become a charity partner. The deadline to submit is June 1.

movie review MONTE YAZZIE MOVIE COLUMNIST

It’s one of the most iconic surprises and images in genre film history, a gory scene of violence when an alien came bursting out of a human’s body in director Ridley Scott’s space horror film “Alien”. If you are brave enough to watch that scene again, I know genre fans will be, watch the reactions of the cast standing in the room as actor John Hurt begins to writhe in pain. The moment the alien appears you’ll notice that all the actors in the room have looks of utter terror on their faces. That’s because Scott didn’t tell the crew what was going to happen or how intense it was going to be.

“Alien: Covenant” takes the theme of terror found in the original film and works to recreate the experience, building a film that works to erase the mythology and world building of Scott’s last outing with this material in “Prometheus”. Unfortunately, in the effort to create a film that seems to be aimed for pure fan service, the interesting bits that “Prometheus” introduced are overlooked to compose a new film that takes a little bit of everything the “Alien” saga has crafted over its near 40 years of existence and mashes it together.

A crew of colonists are en route to a remote planet, an expedition that seems to encompass both an aspect of discovery and desperation.

While in deep hyper sleep, an accident occurs that forces the crew to awaken earlier than expected, an accident that takes the life of their captain. A choice is proposed to the team, continue on the path to the original planet or venture into unknown territory to explore another planet that shows positive signs of habitation.

Of course, things don’t go as expected and the Covenant crew comes face to face with an alien force of nature.

“Alien: Covenant” honors the brand that has brought the franchise this far. Instead of moving in the direction of “Prometheus”, which was to explain the origins of the aliens and discover the “architects”

critique the lapses in logic and gaps in cohesiveness seen in “Covenant” mostly because it’s clear that this film is operating as merely a loose link to connect “Prometheus” to something that can connect to the 1979 “Alien” film. Who cares that the Covenant crew has a military team that doesn’t operate with any kind of military mindset? Who cares that you land on a new planet and just start stomping around without any care of danger or risk?

Who cares when you’ve got aliens, right?

If you can get past the glaring flaws in character motivation and storytelling, there is a really good performance from Michael Fassbender who keeps every scene that he is in completely intriguing. There is genuinely a good story brewing with his character, one that touches on the interesting mythology, focuses on the critical flaws of humanity that have shaped the world in this film, and maybe

even a little commentary about imperialism. It’s all given to Fassbender through the use of two robot characters, one we’ve seen before named David and an upgraded model named Walter. His performance and character will repeatedly keep your interest in the film.

Scott is a confident and skillful filmmaker who crafts beautiful worlds. Look no further than “Blade Runner” or “Gladiator” for examples. His undeniable touch is seen throughout “Covenant”; the long corridors of the ship harken back to the horror atmosphere found in “Alien” and the action set pieces move with anticipation and intensity. In small pieces throughout the film, there are some really good things. While these elements offer a few moments of fun while you are watching the film, you’ll soon remember that many of things you like about this film have already been done, sometimes better, in other “Alien” films.

ALIEN: COVENANT Dir: Ridley Scott that played a predominant background role throughout much of the “Alien” mythos, this film simply provides the alien design fans are familiar with and adds a bigger dose of mayhem.

Scott has crafted more of a horror film this time around, with aliens stalking victims who consistently make the worst decisions film characters in slasher horror films can make. It seems unnecessary to

County Board of Supervisors approves tentative FY 2018 budget As the population increases, so does the need for well-staffed law enforcement agencies and faster systems of administering justice. More than 53 percent of the FY 2018 budget is allocated for public safety and criminal justice.

“Maricopa is the fastestgrowing county in the U.S. for a reason,” said Supervisor Steve Chucri, District 2. “This budget makes smart investments in infrastructure and public safety to ensure that our growth continues to be advantageous for families and industry.”

“One of the core functions of government is protecting the public,” said Supervisor Clint Hickman, District 4.

“With this budget, we are creating a long-term path to success for law enforcement in Maricopa County.”

NORTH VALLEY – The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a tentative budget to ensure Maricopa County’s status as the fastest-growing county in the nation is sustainable. The $2.49 billion budget makes significant investments in future growth while adhering to the goal of lean, customer-service oriented government. Final approval is scheduled for June.

“Today we passed a budget that makes sense for the residents of Maricopa County,” said Denny Barney, District 1, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said in a May 22 news release. “It keeps us on a path of fiscal responsibility, while at the same time, investing in much-needed capital projects like a new jail and intake facility that will make our criminal justice system much more efficient.”

Capital project spending for FY 2018 includes: • $82.29 million for design and construction of a new jail intake facility (ITR).

Using money already set aside, the county will build a 1,280 bed jail on the Durango campus with a separate, 512-bed holding facility for stays of 72 hours or less.

• $31.97 million for a public safety radio system. When completed, the system will reduce or eliminate drops in radio frequency coverage for law enforcement across all 9,200 square miles of the county, increasing public safety and allowing the county to comply with federal law.

• $37 million to convert an unused facility at 225 Madison into working space for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

This adaptive reuse project is more cost effective than building a new facility from scratch. It allows attorneys to stay downtown, close to the courts, while also freeing up office space for other departments which are currently outside the downtown core.

• $26 million in courtordered costs related to the Melendres case. MCSO has budgeted $19.7 million for compliance with the court order. The cost of the court monitor is budgeted at $5.02 million for FY 2018, while the court-ordered investigator & disciplinarian is expected to cost $1.44 million.

“These costs are not within our control,” said Supervisor Steve Gallardo, District 5, speaking about the federal court judgments.

“We have thrown millions of dollars at court ordered law enforcement changes because we are committed to reaching compliance. Every district has needs and we hope by tackling these required expenses we will free up money for future projects.”

“We worked for months with other elected officials, the judicial branch and department managers to craft this budget,” Chairman Barney said.

“Many changed processes and reallocated existing funds which helped us get to a budget that meets our needs and long-term goals.”

The public will be able to comment on the tentative budget between now and the final vote, which is scheduled for June 19.
